RustyRecycledToy Posted September 19, 2007 Share #1 Posted September 19, 2007 Still chasing ghosts here. While I sit and wait on new bearings, I can't help but wonder about other things. It's become an obsession that is driving me bonkers. On the first gens, specifically the '87, what is the frequency of failure of the middle drive gear and/or its components? While I'm hoping that replacing the bearings and greasing eveything up real good will solve my issues, I keep overthinking any other possible causes of my noise. I know it's in the drivetrain, just not sure where. If the failure rate of the middle gear is very low, I'll quit worrying about it so much and possibly sleep tonight. Squidley Posted September 19, 2007 Share #2 Posted September 19, 2007 Ed, They do not frequently break, so I wouldn't loose sleep over it It is a 20 + something year old bike, so unfortunately these things are to be expected...you'll be fine

buddy Posted September 19, 2007 Share #4 Posted September 19, 2007 Only time I ever heard of the middle gear going out is when younger guys tring to burn the tires like racing bikes or running high rpm on the engine then popping the clutch.other than that these engine will run forever if taken care of,myself i would not worry about it. buddy
