SWOOP Posted December 8, 2019 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2019 I have a 2003 royal star midnight venture. What is the best oil for winter riding below 35 deg? I am unable to find the oil that the book recommneds. Any advise would be helpful! Thanks
Marcarl Posted December 10, 2019 Share #2 Posted December 10, 2019 Not a whole lot of replies I see so far. I would guess that a good diesel 10-30 would do just fine. Maybe it's because most of us would not ride at those temp, because it's either too cold to enjoy the ride, or too risky with the proper available traction on icy or snowy surfaces. BratmanXj Posted December 11, 2019 Share #4 Posted December 11, 2019 Shell Rotella T6 5w-40 full synth year round in the Venture. "Air Cooled" 20w-50 for summer and Shell T6 5w-40 for the winter in the Ural air cooled flat twin. Garden Tractor also gets Shell T6 5w-40 year round for summer mowing & winter plowing. N3FOL Posted December 12, 2019 Share #5 Posted December 12, 2019 I use Rotella 15W40 all year long and never had problems riding during the winter months.
frankd Posted December 15, 2019 Share #6 Posted December 15, 2019 I use Valvoline 10W-40 conventional motorcycle oil, but I see that Walmart has full synthetic for just a little more. I don't remember exactly what I paid for my last batch, but I think it was way less than Walmarts '$6.72/qt. I usually buy it at Blain's Farm and Fleet, but the last batch I picked up when we were up in St. Cloud MN visiting our grandson at Mill's Fleet Farm. I live in Oklahoma so it's not the same as when I was in Chicago but I've never had a problem. I just let it warm up a bit longer.
ragtop69gs Posted December 23, 2019 Share #8 Posted December 23, 2019 I run Rotella T6 year around, never a problem in the winter. When I know I'll be riding in below freezing temps I run a 60 watt lightbulb under the crankcase for easier startups in the morning.
