Default Back for more with another 250$ Venture

    Hey guyz and gals!

I don't know if you remember me, I am the guy who bought a 1983 Venture with no 2nd gear for 250$ and rode it from Canada to Cancun in 2016.

Since then I met a gal and have traveled with her two-up full time for a full year including 9 months in South America on a Suzuki Vstrom.

I am now back home and have since then bought a 1985 Venture for 350$ and a 1988 Venture for 250$.

I plan to ride the 1988 two-up to a yet to be chosen location and fly home. Hey it worked out last time, why not try again.

Anyway I am back on here to get some advice again on getting this venture in riding condition to make the trip.

The 250$ Venture starts but only runs on 3 cylinders at idle. I highly suspect a clogged pilot jet on that one carb as it has spark and gets hot when I rev the motor but stays cold idling.

Being a lazy and poor bastard(a bad combination) I am trying to see if I can unplug this puppy without pulling the carbs. (seafoam, carb cleaner, straping a vibrator to the carb body)

Anyway I will get this sorted and then I plan to ride this baby to a location, sell or dispose of the bike and fly home.

Stay tuned and hope to see you guyz on the road.

Heck yes we remember your story, Great fun reading and looking forward to next chapter. So PLEASE, do it again

Nothing wrong with starting with Seafoam in it. Their website says it's ok to run an engine straight on it, so don't be shy to dump a can into a tank, heck even 1/2 tank. Good luck, I'd check the plugs and connections as well, even unscrew the cap, cut 1/4" off spark plug wire, reassemble. Get a new solid connection, at coil end as well.

Another great reason for me to sign up for another year and follow your progress and travels. Your last adventure was like reading a good novel. Welcome back and good luck. Doug

Why don't you do a compression check of the cylinders first to see if you're beating a dead horse. And adjust the valves.

I "thumb checked" the comporession and it seems good. Havent had the chance to do compression test and I dont even know if my tool will fit in there.

This bike had been sitting for 4-5 years so I really think the issue is the carbs.

I already drained the tank and refilled it with fresh gas. On top of that, all of my tests are done with a funnel to the fuel line while I am sorting this out.

Well being new to the group this year I saw this title and had to look. I went back and read the entire thread and what an awesome ride. Looking forward to your next. Now to convince my wife we need to get to Alaska and back. She's just not into riding much now that she's older. Maybe I'll ride, fly her there and meet her. ;-)
