New Air Filter Gasket?

Ok. let me start by saying, I can't afford new air filters. Mine are good, (really old though) and the gasket has disintegrated.

What would you make a new gasket out of?

1. 1/4" foam

2. cardboard.

3. Your suggestion?

Something like this should work. You probably want it a bit thinner.
