99RSV Compression Test

Recommended Posts

Warm up the engine, doesn't want to be hot, just warmed is good.

Take out all plugs.

Screw in the tester.

Open throttle and spin engine for a full reading.

Do this again and then move onto the next cylinder.

Mark down your readings, 1st and second.

Compare readings.

If there is a low cylinder, check it again, and if it's still low insert a squirt of oil and check again. If it comes up on the reading you have a ring issue, if it stays the same the rings checked out good.

If you have to do a wet compression test, roll it over some after you do it so most of the oil will be pushed out or around and not foul plugs. If reading is with in limits, no need for a wet test.

We have a thread called " A case for fogging" some tips in there.

Listen I would unplug the fuel pump and let the carbs run dry before testing.

If the bike hasn't run much then its possible to have some poor reading.

All 4 plugs removed and make sure to keep the throttle pin open.

I have a 99 that had been sitting for a while when I bought it. I did the fogging that Steven G. is talking about and my compression increased substantially. I would highly recommend it.
