Woodstock 50th Year Festival Revival to coincide with our NY Rally in August

I read an article in our local newspaper today about this anticipated festival in Watkins Glen, NY, just a short ride from our Rally site. According to the newspaper account, all of the necessary permits are not yet approved, but the original founder of the festival, Howard Lang said the process is ongoing. A location and ticket prices are not yet announced but will be released soon.

For some of us this may be our chance to re-create those "hazy" days of music, love and weed!

They tried several years back to "recreate" a Woodstock for the modern generation at I think it was Grissom AFB that had been closed. From what I remember it went pretty bad, fights, drugs and general disorder. Phhis the modern generation.

A buddy and I started out to go to woodstock, never made it there but instead ended up at the Erie Canal Soda pop festival (AKA Bull Island festival on the Wabash river. Had a great time there even though many bands didn't make it due to all the roads being clogged for 20 miles.

I'm not sorry I missed the first Woodstock and probably will miss this one also. If I remember correctly the Vietnam War had me previously committed.:scorched:
Me too, brother, me too!! 101st Airborne Jul 69 to Jun 70.

I'm too old to set in the mud and smoke pot any more...

If I had a choice to (or not to) step through a time portal and hit the original Woodstock, I absolutely would, it's an experience I would take. Just for the music alone it would have been amazing IMHO. Not sayin' I would be just listening to the music!

Music and society have changed enough that I'm going to stick with the realization that it is an era gone by. I'm not actually sure what my choices would have been had I been of age in 69, but the only choice I could not make an argument for would the the choices taken by some of our would be POTUS that were of age at the time.

I was stationed in South Korea at an Army missile site when the first Woodstock happened. I was working when the second one happened but my son went. The first one was a financial disaster but the second soaked everybody. You coudn't take any food or drink with you and they gouged you when you bought inside. I think that is why some of the attendees broke into the trailers and stole food and then burned the trailers. Now that I am retired this is my chance but have no interest any more. I'm sure pot won't be the only happy drug available. Hey, we would overdose on viagra anyway if we went this time.

My Dad was a Cop back during the original Woodstock day and age. He had a REALLY close friend named Jason Kraii who owned and operated the Grand Haven Roller Rink in Grand Haven Mi from the late 50's up into the 80's. From the early 60's into the early 70's Jason hosted a Friday Night venue at the rink called "The Grand Haven Beach Bash" which was pretty much our area's (west Michigans Lake Shore) miniature version of Woodstock. My Dad was the head of security/main bouncer at the Rinks weekend end events during those amazing years and rubbed shoulders with the likes of The Beach Boys, The Doors, The Monkeys, Alice Cooper, The Byrds, Bob Seager, The Archies, Tommy James and the Shondells, Sha Nah Nah, Bob Dylan among many many other all time greats when they came to town and LOTS of the one hit wonders of that time that we lop eared hippy varmints who grew up during that time remember so well.

Jason also welcomed many local Michigan artist like Dell Shannon (anyone remember "Runaway"?). I was 1 of 7 kids and the "Black Sheep" of the family so Dad had a lot of responsibility on his shoulders in keeping things together/funding the family so he was always VERY grateful to Jason and his wife for the extra weekly income.

Mr. Kraii LOVED our family/us kids dearly and us older offspring pretty much grew up on roller skates going round and round at his rink (FREE ACCESS TO SKATE ANYTIME THE RINK WAS OPEN SKATE). The Kraii's had a pet Chimpanzee that he would often bring to the rink to let us kids play with. He (the chimp) never did figure out how to make himself move on the rink BUT he LOVED to stand in his skates and be pulled around the rink by us LOL.. Roller Derby was a real thing too and I always DREAMED of getting involved in it BUT, this was before the day and age when just saying you were a girl would get you an open door onto the girls team and it was the girls Roller Derby I was most interested in so I didnt bother to attempt a verbal switch to the opposite sex LOL.

More about the chimp, I will never forget sitting on the stool in front of the skate rental room and listening to Mr. Kraii tell my Dad about what had happened the week before when he left the little ape skater home and went to the rink without him.. Seems the little lop eared varmint found a way to get his pen open and proceeded to DESTROY the interior of their gorgeous home - that rascal definitely defaulted to the LITERAL meaning of not monkeying around!!

What an amazing time to be a teenager that was!! It was CRAZY fun that I would not trade for anything!!

Just a SHORT RIDE from the rally site......... What are you smoking ? Its a 2 hr. ride one way. That would be an all day ride if you want to spend any time there . The committee has been told over and over that members come to the rally to spend time with other members that they haven't seen all year. Some ride many hours and some days to get here, they don't want to go on all day rides. You only have an 1 1/2 hr. ride to the rally, for you its not a biggie.. lol

A two hour ride for me IS a short ride. Your idea of a short ride is different than mine, obviously. I didn't say that anyone has to go there. I was just putting it out there to inform the members that it was an event that was happening in the area and may be something that someone may have an interest in attending for an afternoon, for nostalgia reasons. It's not an event that is available each year, and I doubt that the original attendees will be around for the 100th anniversary event for Woodstock. Maybe you should add it to the "list of things to see and do in the area", if someone doesn't want to take the daily structured rides.

this isn't going to be anything like the original WS. this one will be held a the Glen race track not a open farm field where anyone can just walk in for free. The security is going to be very high and the tickets pre sold. I don't believe you will be able to purchase tickets at the gate. The ticket price will probable be somewhere north of $200.00 for a one day pass and that will probably be the cheep seats in the bleachers where you get to watch the whole thing on the jumbotrons. Stage front will probably be $500 to a $1000. Its all about $$$ these days.

Hey, I've got an idea!!! We can always show the original Woodstock movie and burn or smoke some tea bags!! Burning tea smells just like pot!

I still have my hippy costume from a few years ago!

By august pot may just be legal in NY.:hihi:

You hit that right on the head Robert..............I can buy alcohol and not give up my right....Sneaky politicians...

Have I got a solution for you guys.

I had to give back my gun when I retired, so it won’t affect me.

Can I, a tourist buy the supplies and bring them to the WNY Rally.

That is if it is legal by then and a store to buy the weed, oil or gummie bears at.

Dave:

If New York legalizes pot, it is still illegal on a Federal level. When you arrive at the border and you declare the pot (or not) it is a Federal border and they may take a dim view of your package.

Jim

Thank you Jim, this should be emphasized. Prohibition is beyond absurd, but it is still federally prohibited in the states. Obviously plenty of individuals and businesses are in direct violation, as they should be. Still our gov persists in knowing whats best for us and protecting us from ourselves on our own dime.

NO borders, for any reason. Once one gets stateside it's available. Collaborate with local friends or make some new ones. It's around, just gotta shake the right hands. I suspect (hypothetically of course) anyone traveling into NY will have no real trouble procuring party favors, even if prohibition still exists in NY at the time. Discretion is ones friend in the states. If one were to get hassled by a cop that does drink the Kool-Aid of prohibition, one is still gonna have some splainin' to do.

Here is a brief description of our state laws, which are continually being updated as more states/folks favor liberty over prohibition. https://norml.org/laws
