Oil, synthetic and wet clutches

I have used one specific synthetic motorcycle oil for the last 255,000 miles on 3 bikes. No clutch problems or any other kind of problems. When one switches to a good quality synthetic oil and developes a clutch problem it is because they already had a clutch problem, just didn't know it.

I've run synthetics, Mobil 1 for Motorccyles in my case, since 1999 and have never had an issue.

 

According to Google, Mobil 1 V-Twin is SAE grade 20W-50 viscocity. Mobil 1 4T-Racing is SAE 10W-40. Which one are you using?

 

Now, I am new to changing oil in RSVs, but my understanding was, if using a synthetic oil, the motorycyle oil must meet the MA2 spec in order to be used with a wet clutch. Does Mobil 1 meet MA2?

 

One more question, what is the best oil filter (opinions) to use in a 2008 RSV?

Question: come riding season in northern Wisconsin (first part of May), I want to switch to synthetic oil in my 2008 RSV. Will there be any problems with the synthetic oil mixing with the residue left in the engine and transmission from the previous oil - non-synthetic?

 

Possible dumb question, but I am riding again now after a 30 year drought and my motorcycle servicing skills are a little rusty.

I've always used the 4T-Racing. Great oil. As far as filters. I've used several different ones but sort of settled on the ... I think it's Champion...that has the hex nut welded on the end for easy removal. Swapping through synthetic will be no problem at all with the little bit of conventional oil left in it.

I use both the Mobil 1 oils mentioned. I also used and still use the Rotella T-6 full syn oil. The mobil 1 is a bit pricey, but if you catch it on sale it aint to bad. As for filters I used Purolator (before they changed the design) and Wix. Oriely filters are made by Wix so a few peso's cheaper cost. K&N filters are nice with that nut deal on the end, but it sure aint worth the extra 6 or more bucks over a regular filter cost to me.

Shalom, what type oil are r iders using I. 06 royal star 1300. Been reading and there appears to be se double talk about synthetic not to used for wet clutches and others say yes. What is proven? Thanks

Since the old Purolator Pure One filter has changed, I have gone to the new Fram 7317 series. It looks to be a superior filter and has no relationship to the old cheapy filter that everyone disparaged.

While I LOVE synthetic oils and LOVE the additional miles between oil changes they offer (its always amazing how clean and full bodied the Quaker 0/20 full syn comes out after 10,000 miles in our Ioniq) and the great lube they offer... For my bikes that have wet clutches in them though, I still prefer and have always ran Dino oil as I like to change my oils as the oil darkens from clutch fiber plate wear. Run em hard,, but keeping good "clean" oil in em I always say. Keep in mind though,, I am talking about any of my scoots (like my 1st Gen v-4's) whose primary design is that of clutch/tranny sharing oil with the engine.. Separate those components so the clutch is bathed in oil that is exclusive to the clutch and not being shared with other areas (HD been doing this for years now) - full syn throughout = no problembo.. Another "IMHO's",, even if your going full synthetic,, not a bad idea to make sure your using full synth designed for wet clutches = no different than steering clear of High Mileage/energy conserving Auto Oils in the Dino flavors...
