  1. I recently purchased an 83 Venture, and yesterday was my first real opportunity to put some miles on it. When I test rode the bike, it was not plated so I had very little room to drive... just around a small parking lot. Having been forewarned of the 2nd gear issue, I checked as best I could. During my short bursts of 15 seconds each, second was always there. So, I rolled my eyes a bit yesterday when I pulled away from the very first stoplight on my morning commute and then jerk/jerk/quick-reaction-to-shift-into-3rd/back to velvet smooth. My question is this : I found the rebuild thread and I am confident I could pull it off... but conceivably how long could I run this bike just skipping second all together ? In just one day of riding, it became second nature. Is there any further damage that can happen ? BTW, I LOVE this bike. I had my doubts, but WOW. It's sat for a while and still isn't fully tuned but I was astonished at how smooth and powerful it was.
  2. Here's a link to the website where I picked up the mesh jackets for Phil and I. Yesterday was the first time we worn them for any distance, and they were great. I am very happy that we got them. http://store.valueaccessories.net/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1644&MMP=1014317010
  3. There was a 07 Venture parked behind my 07 at the Wings n Wheels show yesterday. Was it someone here?
  4. Lonestarmedic ( JB ) ??? havn`t seen him around lately and myself and Don where just talking about him yesterday, (all good ) of coarse.. JB, if your out there, give us a shout, just want to see whats new.. Kreg
  5. Met Eyehook yesterday when he and his wife came by the house. Turns out my wife knew him for about a year at work as they always talked about our dogs on break. The world dont get any smaller than that. He just purchased a 1986 Royale, Black and Uschi. Looks to be in excellent shape with 47k on the clock. Im sure he will post some pics soon. That was a hint, Larry.....
  6. Well, Eileen and I were on and off about going anywhere this week. We finally decided yesterday that we would go. I spend Saturday cleaning the bike, cleaning and re-oiling the air filters, etc. Made reservations last night near Seneca Rocks, WV and thought that would be a nice place to spend a week. Woke up this morning and wasn't feeling well at all. I tried to push through it. Got the trailer hooked up, got everything all packed, took care of some last minute things around here and then try as I might, I just couldn't deny the fact that I was not feeling well enough to go. I did something to my left foot yesterday while working in the yard. Can barely walk today. Also have some type of virus or something and spending a LOT of time visiting the toilet. Finally admitted to Eileen that I was sick and then canceled the hotel reservations in WV. So, I slept for about 7 hours today and I THINK I'm feeling a bit better. Foot still hurts but I think I can balance the bike OK with it when I stop. We are going to try again tomorrow to at least get aways somewhere....probably somewhere closer but just get away.
  7. I happen to know 2 , (No actually 3) Forum members that live in my neck of the world that need to be inducted, encouraged, pursued or harrassed into this Social (..... Or Anti-Social Group...........Hmmm, ............. Only time will tell) club. All of whom I happen to have been fortunant enough to have spent time with yesterday. One of which being BLACKJACK Terry. I spent time with BLACKJACK yesterday because as a dedicated forum member, he is the one that has taken it upon his shoulders, and to his credit, organized and Host the Monthly North Georgia M & E which occurs on the second Saturday of each month. But not only that is(as I found out yesterday) is a musician playing the drums :smash2:and guitar. :guitarist 2:He also happens to be a friend and the Design/build general contractor to the owner of Galaxy Music. :whistling:He recently completed a project of building the new Galaxy Music store on GA 400 near Dahlonega, GA whice we rode by yesterday :7_6_3[1]:and where his son happens to be the new Store Manager.:cool10::whistling: Also at yesterday's N Ga M&E was a relatively new Forum member, 1st time M&E participants, avid Guitar collector :mo money:and aspiring Guitar musician:guitarist 2:. COLUMBO. He and his significant other, whose name (to my discredit) :doh:I didn't catch or retain, seem to be super people and ride a beautifull 2nd Gen Midnight Venture. Also another relatively new forum member, MATTCHARVA, and are also reunited Old friends, and..... who I happen to be rebuilding an 84 XVZ12 VR for. Matt is a talented musician that I have actually jammed with, plays a killer Piano, and Guitar:guitarist 2: and does great lead vocals. :Im not listening toMatt and his wife Charlotte were over for dinner last night and are also super people :cool10:that will fit right with the VentureRider and Biker/musician group. So :icon_smile_questionwho's in charge of the new membership committee for this Social?? Group. Oh yea, and..:icon_smile_question........will there patches for this club? .................:banana:or maybe a secret membership decoder ring.
  8. I would appreciate your thoughts on this as I have a few questions, once again. Apologize for my ignorance upfront. - I can get warranty work at any Yamaha dealer I choose, correct, and not just the one I purchased the bike from? - When I got the bike home, first off it was really dirty, when I washed it yesterday and got it good and clean, I noticed a large scratch running all the way across my windshield….how should I go about getting that replaced, or can it be replaced since I already took delivery of the bike? If I can get it replaced would that be a warranty item? - I notice when I am decelerating the exhaust sputters some, not backfiring, just kind of like it is coughing (if that makes sense). I also noticed it does this when I rev’d in the garage yesterday. - How do I know if they even prepped the bike before I took delivery? My thoughts are all they did was roll it from the show room out to front of the building and wait on me to pick it up. Sorry for the questions, but this is a new bike and I want to make sure I get it off to a good start, and I simply do not trust these motorcycle dealers…at least not the ones around here. Thanks again for your help. jkt
  9. yesterday. I have a Suzuki Boulevard cruiser, so the Venture is taking a little get use to, as to be expected. I have seen a few posts on here about Avon tires, do tires really make that big a difference in handling? Slow speed manuvering? By the way, love the bike. Can't wait to get home and wash it. The dealer did a lousy job cleaning it yesterday. Also, is there anything I should watch out for or be aware of related to the Venture?
  10. Just got back from Lake Taho, today. Two day ride, return trip, 830 miles. Rode from Sacremento, North, to Redding Calif yesterday on I-5. Temperature in the Calif. Central Valley, was 112 Deg. F. About 180 miles at that temp. I intend to avoid doing that again !! Forcast on TV at 6pm on Cable TV in Weed, Calif. yesterday evening. They said, 114 deg for the next 5 days. Anybody planning on riding in that area this week, or weekend, Be Advised !!!! ie. Interstate 5, I managed, 45 min. rideing, and had to find some air conditioned place to cool off at, then go another 45 min. Phweeeeeee. It was HOT However the bike, ran like a Swiss Watch, seemed to like the Heat!!! Had a great time rideing all the roads around Lake Taho, with my Sister, and Hubby. Saw the Fireworks display on Lake Taho, pretty spectacular. I would estimate there was about 20,000 people there. Must have been at least 2000 Harley's !!!! Lots of great roads to ride, around Lake Taho,
  11. Passed a Midnight RSV on my way home from work yesterday. He had a female (wife/girlfriend/daughter) riding on the back. He had the only good bike beings what he was riding with two other people on gold wings, one pulling a trailer and the other with some kind of a trike setup . It was on I-24 West about a mile from the Paducah, KY exit. Just wonderin if he reads this web site. If so, give me a shout. Glenn
  12. This has been a very enjoyable week with Niagara135 stopping by Wed evening for a short visit, and Dragerman spending the day yesterday. We're expecting Mother and of course OH Sherry! tonight with friends tonight/tomorrow morning. These visits mean a lot to me! Yesterday Dragerman and myself met a brand spanking new member to the boards, just joined a couple of days ago, that also lives around the corner from me. Forgot his screen name but hopefully he will post here. Black Cherry 2nd gen just like Dragerman's... Hope to see more of you guys in the near future. Gets real boring for me being limited on my activities. I promise I won't put any of you to work unless you really really want to do something. We will be caging it up to Kitchener Wednesday afternoon for the final dinner. We will be hanging around the park with Scott and Sherry and anyone else that is around in the afternoon. Hope to meet a bunch of new friends as well as seeing many if not all of our old ones!

  14. Yesterday morning around 7 AM I tried to call Bob to see how he was doing. At that time there was no answer. After I got to work I telephoned my wife and asked her to call Becky (Bob's wife) to see if everything was ok. A relative answered the phone and informed my wife that Bob went to the hospital early yesterday morning around 4 AM at which time he was to have some toes on his foot amputated as the infection in his foot that he has been battling took a turn for the worse. Evidently the doctor never told Bob not to eat breakfast before he came in...he did...and so the surgery got postponed to later yesterday afternoon. My wife and I were planning on going down to his house after work today but when I got into work they changed my schedule from 8 to 4 pm to noon to 10 pm. Bob is at ECMC which stands for the Erie County Medical Center. I am sure he would love some cards and well wishes. If I can find his home address I will paste it here so you can send a card. In the meantime...I'm sure posting here would be great as well. Ok...here is Bob and Becky's home address...lets flood them both with our prayers...some posts here...and get some cards in the mail so that when he returns he has something to cheer him up. Robert & Rebecca Scharf 52 Aristo Terrace Arcade, NY 14009-9205 Just got off the phone with Becky...Bob had his surgery yesterday afternoon at 5 pm...surgery was done at 6 pm...doctor had to remove one toe (initially they thought maybe two)...he should be discharged and coming home this Monday if all continues to go well. My wife and I are going down to his house after church Sunday to put in their air conditioners so that will be one less thing they have to worry about. He currently is in room 703 and there is no telephone in his room. I told Becky to make up a to do list of other things that need to be done around the house and I would try to solicit some help from here to come to their home next Saturday June 14th to help in getting things done. She said there is not much to do...but come on guys...many hands will make for light work...so please consider this request. We can get the job done then maybe chip in for some pizza and wings and hang out with Bob and Becky to keep him in good spirits. I figure we could get there between 9 am and 10 am...and have all the work done by noon, 1 at the latest...and then have the rest of the day to hang out and enjoy one another. Please post here if you can come...Becky says there wll not be a lot to do...but lets get it done and have a party for and with Bob and Becky.
  15. Yesterday my Red Knights chapter held our annual Bike Blessing. During the week I was contacted by a New member who had purchased a 06 Black Cherry and during the course of our emails and talks I invited him to come to the run. Ricardo was a great guy as was his wife and whole crew. He brought a few other guys from the local Star Touring chapter. I fear I cost him quite a bit of money as when he was looking at my steed I could see the ideas flowing. MRS. Ricardo got a few nice pics of the Ricardo, Myself and the bikes together and Im sure he will post them up later but it was a pleasure and I look forward to a few more rides with a new Venturerider brother. Ricardo also suggested that he may try to make it to Freebirds for maintainance day so Vinny if you are reading this you and Sam may have a nice couple to ride with there and back.
  16. Lots of scoots out in Ontario yesterday. I talked to a nurse at the local hospital last night. She said there seemed to be a constant flow of motorcycle accidents yesterday. One common denominator was sliding on sand left on the streets and intersections from winter. It's warm, but it's not normal riding conditions yet. Rip
  17. i picked up my new ride yesterday . here are some photos of her http://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/e/e/c/eec35ade3327f0f1846ba7bcaf7b3a2b0_medium.jpghttp://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/9/d/7/9d7ac60da4fbff071f76f2393cda4a0f0_medium.jpg http://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/2/b/2/2b28a762e4e6308d042592badb7895420_medium.jpghttp://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/a/c/5/ac5547a9ab25f13a12c3a6604c79bb141_medium.jpghttp://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/f/1/e/f1e2a7549e7aef47b0021b30d4a56b030_medium.jpghttp://image1.frappr.com/pix1/i/20080417/6/9/a/69a548bdc0fe43df55c0fbf88be5cc510_medium.jpg
  18. GUMBY:rotfl: Got all my upper teeth removed yesterday
  19. Getting ready to go to Panama City this sunday, this will be my longest ride so far. Went to Montgomery last monday, lot of fun! Took my bike in for the 600 mile service yesterday and noticed a noise coming from the rear, sounds like the tire rubbing on something. The dealers mechanic thinks it may be a brake caliper but Im not sure. The sound doesnt change when you apply the brake. Hope its not serious, I am supposed to pick it up saturday am. Also got my gps mounted yesterday, the folks at adventure gps in Decatur were great to deal with and had all parts in stock. Anyone know of a good ride around Panama City? My wife and I are taking 7 18 year old girls down for spring break so I know I will need to ride some to get rid of some stress!!!! They are all riding with the wife in her suv.
  20. Hey all, After the snow storm that hit us last week, we were all begining to think that spring would never get here. Well had to work yesterday, got to the freighter at 0700, still a little dark and cold out, got on board, up to the bowthruster room and down into the engine room. Put on the classic rock and got to it, by 1300 had run out of things to do, so decided to pack it in. Got up on deck and WOW ! What a beautiful day, +7 C/ 42 F, sunny and next to no wind. Raced home, chizzled the ice from in front of the garage, wheeled out the scoot, a quick charge to the battery while I showered, and fired her up. Got the gear on, and headed out for a ride, drove down to Milton, around town, then the clouds moved in, and headed home. Was laughing and smiling the whole time, got a number of looks like I'd lost my mind from the cagers, but like the song says, " if you don't ride, you don't know ". Can't wait for the real thing to finally get here. Oz
  21. Or at least SPRING. I'm really tired of winter now. I know that some of you are getting some really bitter cold right now. Bad enough here, 9 F right now but also 27 MPH winds gusting up to 40 MPH. Makes it pretty nasty. Got just a covering of snow last night and the wind drives it right through you. Picked up a used hot tub a couple of weeks ago and spent all day yesterday building a base to sit it on. Digging 3 ft. deep holes in this ground was not all that much fun. Got it done though and got the hot tub on it. Filled and warming right now and plan to sit out in the 4 degree or so temps this evening and ENJOY it. Just need to run to the store and pick up some Baily's for my coffee.
  22. I'm looking out the window at the snow falling and am happy as heck that I got out on my bike yesterday. Weather was clear and in the high 40's. Here in the Mid-West, the weather can and will change overnight so when these opportunities come up I take full advantage of it.
  23. Well it was a sunny day yesterday with freezing rain in the forecast for today. So at 34 degrees I suited up and took a 150 mile ride with a quick stop at my Mom's to clean some gutters. Felt really good to be out and about. The only thing that was cold was my hands. I just can see to find gloves that will keep my hands warm. I currently use leather, insulated, with a long cuff. Yesterday I even put those handwarmers down in my gloves which helped a little. Anyone have a suggestion for keeping my hands warmer? I suppose it doesn't help that they have been frostbit before. Thanks for any suggestions. J
  24. Anyone here ever go to Americade? We're thinking about going this coming year. Ride the BRP and Skyline drive, up to Americade, visit a friend in Vermont and then back in NY to visit family there. Got the Americade times in the mail yesterday and now I'm psyched up and starting to make plans. Any recomendations on where to stay?-Jack
  25. We welcomed our fourth grandchild yesterday! Cutest little girl ever. Aurora (we suggested Borealis as a middle name but that was shot down) was born about 10:00 yesterday morning. She is 8 lbs 6 oz, 20 inches long and has a head full of hair. Both mom and daughter are doing great. She is our only granddaughter thus far. Does this mean we get to spoil her double??
