  1. Just doing some tinkering on my 83 XV. I started it up because I was gonna maybe tinker with my new carb synch gauges. After a couple minutes of warm up time I notice a wisp of smoke coming up thru the frame. Shut it down to have a look see, and what I found was a connector from the rectifier doing a meltdown. Real hot. Three white wires from one side and three black ones going towards the stator? Anyone have any ideas? Didn't seem to effect how it runs but definitely something is wrong. Me not so happy.
  2. I took the faring off today do some wiring and to my surprise a nest of insulation. Nobody was home so I cleaned it up and surprise again wires to speakers chewed up. I repaired the speaker wires and my intended repair. Before I put it back together I was going to put some dryer sheets in there. I am also looking for any other methods to keep the little creatures out. I would also say if you get a chance you may want to check yours. I am also going to check under all my covers and air intake.
  3. Toward the end of the season my 86 wasn't too appreciative of wet weather....it would kick up quite a fuss for about 10 -20 kms (as I believe the engine would warm up and dry the moisture of the plug wires)...then all would be just fine. I actually sprayed the wires which was helpful but didn't quite elieviate the problem. A collegue gave me a set of wires that he wasn't using to replace mine. Question lead in......if you look at a cross section of the current wire it is braided core with a black sheath surrounding it......the wires he gave me are braided core, white inner sheath then the outer black sheath........Is there a big difference???...can I use the wires he gave me?? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  4. Just wondering if the cool snap has caused an ice jam in the wires to the Chat Room? Tried IE8 and Firefox, both timed out...
  5. Today I removed the trunk, etc from my RSV. Yamahamer was a big help getting me headed down the right path. I like the looks and REALLY like the way it handles now. Only electronics I lost was the CB which I don't use anyway. All in all I'm happy with the way it turned out. Now to figure how to get rid of the wires and brackets under the seat so I can make it a solo bike like I had my RSTD. Thanks Mark for guidance, you saved me a lot of headache.
  6. I bought an intercom from Sierra Electronics and I love it, but even though it mounts under the seat out of the way there are wire connectors hanging out from under the seat and it looks awful. I'm wondering if any of you guys who are more creative than me have come up with a way to make it look like those wires belong there instead of looking junky. The wires I'm speaking of are the ones your headset plug into, and that the Ipod plugs into. Thanks for any and all suggestions. JT
  7. I'm starting the slow process of reassembly (still waiting to finish paint before installing outer cowlings). The inner cowlings are attached and am slowing going through electrical (radio works, CB has issues)... Anyways, I'm curious about a little green connector on the left forward/upper side of the bike. It has two wires with the connectors that are 90 degrees from each other to form a "T" within the connector. What does this connector connect to? Thanks, WHCC
  8. Me and my better half decided this summer that it was time for her to learn how to ride. I kept an eye out for something small and not in the best of shape in case she was to drop it. So... I just brought home an 81 Suzuki GS550L yesterday. It's actually in pretty good shape considering it has been sitting outside at my Dad's for the last few years. It belonged to my cousin who has been waiting for my brother to fix it. Neither ever had much success keeping it running. There were no keys to be found anywhere so I went to the locksmith with the ignition today to have a set of keys made using the code on the housing. I hooked a battery up to it, turned the key and everything lit up like it should. When I hit the start switch and nothing happened. When I pulled off the cover on the right side to try and track down why it wouldn't turn over, I noticed some wires that had been cut. As far as I can tell, someone swiped the rectifier. They didn't even bother unplugging it. They just snipped all the wires in one clean cut. For some reason, my brother comes to mind. First question, would cutting those wires make it not turn over when the start button is pressed? I've had other bikes and they would still at least turn over without a rectifier. Second question, what other years and models used the same rectifier? I'd be able to increase my odds of getting one if I knew. Third question, anybody here have an extra one laying around? Fourth and last question, would any of you know if there is a manual somewhere online that I can download? Thanks, Bill
  9. My question is the two wires going to the old horn. Should they both show 12 volts at all times? I checked them with a light and both has 12 volts with the key on. And is this the two wires that goes to number 85 and 86 on the relay? Aslo I'm curious of where everyone placed their relays at....
  10. First, I want to thank you all for your help. It looks like the solenoid is on the outside of the battery box on the left side. I tried to get it out but the wires are too short. I can not see it from the left side as there is steel in front of it. All I have on the left side is a fuse box with a top on it and more wires. I am at a loss.:225:The bike is a 2000
  11. I have a 2 piece cable for a J&M headset. It is the 5 pin style...the ends where the cables join together is shaped like a D. Works, but not a new cable by any means. No bare wires showing, etc. If you need it, send me a pm, first one to speak up gets it. It's yours for a $5 donation to VR.O.
  12. Quickstep is installing my thumb brake (replacing back brake) and needs a question answered please Which two wires does he tap in to- to get brake light?? (rear):confused24:
  13. Is it possible to run a wire to the front under the gas tank without takiing it off? I will need to run four wires two - and two +. One set for the gps and the other for a radio caddy.
  14. Hey all I got my Dynamics Clusters from Custom Dynamics today but need some help in the hook up. There are no where I can pass the wires that need to connect to the Brake/running light wires in the tail light. I know I have to drill holes (I guess) but not sure whre the best place would be to do it. Anyone with pictures of theirs? Thanks
  15. OK, I'm looking to figure out what exactly I would need in order to take advantage of the intercom on the 89 Venture. The bike does not come with helmets, headsets or any wires or cables so I have to start from ground zero. Where do I begin? Thanks
  16. The one on the bars not the slave cylinder. I had a extra in my parts and took it out to put on my 85. It only had 2 wires in the wiring harness. When I started to pull the one from the 85 it had 4 wires. So back to plan one. I replaced the plunger and bushing but it still does not return out all the way when you release it after pulling into bar. I did bleed it out. Do I need to take the plunger out and clean in there or what? The master itself is working good just not returning as far as it should. It lacks quite a bit coming out as far as it should. A inchor little better. After you release it you can pull it out that much further.
  17. Auxiliary plug under the seat has a cap that removes and it's only purpose I can see is to waterproof the plug. Where can you get the other end to put the two (hot and neutral) wires from my GPS? The plug is already switched to "On or Acc" which is what I want. Thanks!
  18. here we go with another problem... man you folks are patient. Anyhow I've got a lot of static in my headsets. Enough that we don't want to use them. It is engine noise because it changes with the rpm of the engine. I have an 84 which did not come with a C/B and have fitted one from a 90. What I'm hearing is the Mark II's have a noise filter. I have one that I picked up but cannot find anywhere that it plugs in. So the question is.. Where does it plug in. Maybe my bike is missing that plug in the harness. Is there a diagram that I could follow to wire this up somehow. I'm running out of ideas. I pulled all the wires out of the bike and ran them across the top to eliminate the proximity to high tension wires. No help. I pulled the stator wires out and got them away from the frame. Didn't help. I'm really hoping a filter will help. OK guys and gals... I'm hoping someone out there can help me get this figured out. Wayne
  19. I am getting ready to relocate my TCI box. I almost have it released from the current convenient location and I would like to put it on top of the airbox. It sounds like some of you have routed the 2 connector cables up the left (?) side if the airbox. Once disconnected from the TCI is there enough slack in the 2 cables that they can be slid up the side without removing that darn box? How did you secure the TCI to the airbox lid? Also, my connector cables were puked on from the old battery right where the wires enter the white plastic connector. Is there a "best way" to clean that stuff off without damaging the wires? Thanks Kevin
  20. bike still up for grabs its a 83 venture xvz12 i have repainted it except the saddle bags had the seat redone, new used tci box, starter, clutch master cylinder, cleaned the carbs, fixed the water pump leak, new plugs and wires, cleaned out all brake lines, and cleaned it up. the bike runs and pulls itself, im sellin it for $1,000 obo thanks kenny
  21. I have tried twice to install rear brake Hyder lights . When I connect the 2 wires to the brake wires (one to ground the other to the brake wire). When I use the brakes the rear driving light goes out ????? Help..... Cb
  22. Just finished a small project to add 5-light amber LED pods to the front fork reflectors as side marker lights. My biggest concern was to hide the wires running up along the brake lines. For $11, I think I solved it: I started with two Radiantz Top FX LED pods (amber, with black housing). For $8.99 each, with a 3' shrink-wrapped wire pigtail they were perfect. So not to crack the reflector, I drilled progressively larger holes until I ended up with one just big enough to feed the wires through (photo 1). The LED pods come with 3M mounting tape that I stuck right to the reflector. Bought some 5/8" black vinyl tubing from Home Depot for $11- the down side was that it is only sold in a 20ft roll (photo 2). This is the stuff commonly used in ponds and fountains, so you might have some luck finding it somewhere where you can buy the 2.5ft that you need. Oh well, so I have extra now. Cut two pieces of tubing, each the length of each brake line, then slit it down the back with an exacto knife. This allowed me to slide it over the brake line and my newly run wiring (photo 3). Once I had the tubing over the entire length of the brake line -- it was a little tight getting it through the guide brackets, but it fit -- I used a small black zip-tie at the top and bottom on each side to hold it snug (photo 4). This left me with a clean looking finished product (photo 5). I took the wires up under the fairing and soldered the hot (yellow) wires into the positive terminal at the back of the conector plug for the accessory outlet. I then soldered the ground (black) wires into the ground terminal at the same plug (photo 6). Now the LEDs come on in the "Accessory" key position. The finished product throws a decent amount of light and looks unobtrusive -- at least to me (photo 7).
  23. How easy is it to remove the seat on a 2003 venture...i want to run my wires for my led's under there?
  24. I read the tech advisory from Freebird (thanks buddy) on how to install the Yamaha spoiler with brake light......but am confused about the wiring. Freebird show directions on where to connect THREE wires....mine only has two: red and black. Does this mean a) mine isn't genuine Yamaha (does someone else make one?) ...or b) I lost a wire somewhere? If I am resigned to having/using only two wires, can anyone advise which "jacks" they should be plugged into to provide either "on when running" or "on when braking" or both? Thanks, guys! Mike Smart riding saves lives......loud pipes cause deafness and piss of your neighbours.
  25. Ordered 2 horns. Question, I am going to mount them on the rear bolt holding the passenger floorboards. Can I splice the wires from one relay to both horns? The relay is 30 amps. I was thinking of wireing one horn and spliceing the wires from that horn to the other horn. Hope you can understand what I mean. tew47
