  1. I was having problems with my audio system, 2008 venture, responding to the commands that I would punch in on the control located on the handle bars. It got progressively worst until one day it went totally out. The bike is under warranty so I took it to the Yamaha dealer where I purchased it. It should be noted that I found that people working on the audio system are really not educated on how it works and how to troubleshoot the system. Its change black boxes so to speak. So they tried the new control and that did not work. So they were on the phone with Yamaha techs for hours talking about what to do next. They took the front fairing off and found that the wires going to fuel tank for the intercom (rider) were all cut up. The wires had been routed wrong and got into the steering area and slowly were being smashed and cut to pieces by steering the bike. They ordered a new harness for the headset and installed same. The problem was still NOT repaired. Again on the phone with Yamaha techs and yamaha sent in a new amp that is located under the front fairing. That took care of the problem. The system now works great and responds immediately to the commands. This whole event took about two months to get worked out driving back and forth. In short everyone should remove their front fairing and take tie ties and really look at how their wiring is being run to prevent this from happening. I did write a letter to Yamaha about the routing of the wiring under the fairing and what had happen. I believe that the wires being cut on the headset cord shorted out the AMP blowing same. It only took two months and about 400 miles of riding back and forth waiting for parts and etc. I would also like to note that there are TWO fuses in the audio system. One fuse is in the battery compartment and the other is behind the RIGHT UNDER COVER. So if your having audio problems be sure to check both fuses. I hope that this will help someone. Please check all the wires running under the front fairing. It could prevent you from having the same problem. Yamaha techs also advised that the connections on the amp, which are many work loose so be sure to check them as well. Good Luck, DanC
  2. The sight glass on my front brake master cylinder sprung a leak from cracking, so I replaced it with an ebay m/c. When I took off the old master cylinder, the it had just two wires coming out of it and they were tucked in the fairing - not hooked up. Brake light did not work with front brake, now I know why. However, the replacement m/c has two sets of wires coming out of it. The two with the bullet type ends that connect somewhere, but there is another set of wires coming out that have a plastic connector on the end that looks like it should plug into something - anyone know where this goes? Thanks, Don
  3. So, both my dash speakers and headset speakers play a different tune. It is same whether on the radio or throught the cassette adaptor. Left dash speaker and left headset speaker = engine noise Right dash speaker and right headset speaker = music I have put space between the spark plug wires and any wires. The wires are the NGK set off of ebay. What is wrong?
  4. Well I've always been a person that likes the clean look on my bikes and I like to keep it simple. So I removed a tail light bar and back off module that the PO put on. There were a lot of wires and relays to remove. Now once I was finished I found two wires that I'm not sure where that go. They are at the tail light area and come out of the OEM harness. One is blue and the other yellow and both have male leads. Now every thing back there work. Tail light, brake light, turns, and hazards. I'm stumped.
  5. I have an 83 Venture that will not start using the starter. The engine turns over then backfires. the fuel pump does come on. I can bump start and it runs great once started. I have checked the battery, it has a good 12 volts. I have replaced the battery cables with 4 gage wires. I also have replace the old fuse box with a new blade type box. I get an initial spark to all the plugs but after a revolution or two no spark except for the left rear it always seems to have a good spark. I have pulled the spark plug wires clipped have inch off each end and re-attached with no change. I have read something about the ignition switch causing the back two cylinders to not fire. What do I need to look for with that? I have the faring off to be able to get to the coils and the TCI. I will be testing the coils resistance today. I have service manual. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
  6. Ok here goes. Sorry this took so long but things have been totally crazy around here. First thing you need to buy is a 12v garage door opener. Here is the one I used. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j256/Shinufu/0909101242.jpg Next you will need some electrical wire, solder gun and solder. Open the garage door opener so it looks like this. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j256/Shinufu/0909101243.jpg Take out the battery. Now the rest is quite simple. You need to solder a POS and NEG wire on the battery posts. Simple enough. Now in the next picture you will notice the SW1 on the left side. There are two tiny posts the run up thru the plastic. They need to be soldered together. That is for the constant connection. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j256/Shinufu/0909101244.jpg Once everything is soldered into place you can file out two small grooves for the wires to go thru and put it all back together. Test it buy using the 12v battery that came with the remote. If all works your install ready. I split the fairing and pulled the headlight assembly out to get a good look at the wires. There are three on the plug for the headlight. One is for low beam, one is for high beam and one is a ground. You want the HIGH BEAM and GROUND. I used wire clips to attach the remote to the wires. Use plenty of electrical tape to secure the wires and put it all back together. WALAH!!!!!!!! You should now be able to open your garage door with your highbeams. I hope this helps!!!!
  7. OK now I have the trailer hitch on and the trailer ready to go is there a plug and play trailer connector for the 84 VR like the goldwing or do I have to splice the wires ? I have been searching the tech library but could not find anything. Tom
  8. I am installing OEM passing lamps on a 2006 RSV. Everything had been going great. I am at the point where I mount the lamps to the bike and begin connecting the wires from the blinkers to the connections inside the faring. To my delight after I hooked up the left blinker - Black, Chocolate, and blue - then the right blinker, Black, Dark Green, and blue, to the wires inside the faring both blinkers worked, and the head light, high and low beam worked. I did not like the way I had brought a few of the wires into the faring so I disconnected the black wire, from the right blinker, and moved it around the mount bracket, and plugged it back in. I turned my bike on and now my head light will not come on and the lights on my dash board will not come on either but my blinkers work. Here is what I have checked; 1) Every fuse on the bike - none blown 2) Pulled the head lamp bulb out - still good 3) Disonnected all wires coming from the blinkers to the wires in the faring and made sure all connections were good. - still no head light I am at a loss. Any help would be much appreciated!
  9. I want to hook up a dwell-tach meter that I have from the old days when you could work on a car to my 2nd gen to set the idle speed. There's two wires on it and I think one went to ground and the other to the coil. Anyone know where to hook up to get a reading for tach?
  10. Anyone have the driver intercom cable harness they can part with. Tried soldering a new plug on the end where it sits on the tank but just can't get a good solder on those little wires. If someone has one to part out please let me know and how much. Oh it's for an 86.
  11. Two years ago I put a set of stebal air horns on. I just got it back from the shop to replace the shock and the horn on the right I did not like the way they had it mounted, they had to remove it to get to the shock. So I was going to move it to where I wanted it and the bolt holding the horn came loose. So I had to unplug the wires to remount it and one of the wires drooped on the exhaust pipe and sparked and now neither air horn works. I replaced the relay nothing, the stock front horn works but not the rear horn. I did run separate fuses for each air horn, both look good. what do I need to check to get them to work? Have the horns attached to passenger floorboards. tew47

I want to relocate it to top of air box but the wires dont look long enough.am I not seeing all the wire. thanks for all the help Darrell
  13. After all the time that the venture has been on the road why hasn,t any one come up with a harness for trailer plug in before now.... I looked behind the seat and there isn,t much room to hook up new wires and the tail light has wires all over..there got to be something out there Whistler:bang head:
  14. Today I removed the old R/R and replaced it with the newer Shindengen Mosfet R/R (www.roadstercycle.com) . The only modification I made is to put it on the left upper side of the fairing, rather than the original location below the left footrest. I removed the old tuner and cassette tape from the left fairing, and will form a lockable storage box from ABS black textured plastic in its place and use the original lockable Yamaha lid and form a piece of ABS plastic to cover the old holes. (Thanks to SaltyDog in AR for the detailed help and description on his modification.) I have attached a couple of photos showing the old/new Regulator Rectifier, and also a picture of the location of the new R/R. The original connector plugs to the stator were pretty nasty, so I cut it off, soldered the wires from the new R/R (yellow wires in photo) to the white stator wires, then put heat shrink tubing on them for good measure. Couple that with an Odyssey PC680MJ gel battery, along with an Argus "Battery Bug" and I am livin' life in "high cotton."
  15. Does anyone has the Speaker Wiring Diagram from the 2e gen Venture ... I replaced my speakers a few weeks a go for the Polk Speakers.and I'm not happy of sound quality from the Bass. Now I'm wondering, do I have the right color wires in the right place. What color wires goes where?

I just picked up a Bad Boy Horn. Is it nessesary to use the relay they include or can I just plug in my stock wires?
  17. Well, my key was pretty hot today when I turned off my bike. Although my thermometer did say it was 97 out (in the shade), and I was riding for ~4-5 hours or so... In the sun. So, while I don't think I am having premature switch issues, I just figured it was time that I come up with a quick and easy bypass. I know that there is a write up for doing this and cutting the wires on the bike to wire up the bypass for when it fails (and I will probably do this if absolutely necessary), but what I would like to do is get a plug and play setup going, so all I have to do is unplug my faulty ignition switch and plug in my bypass (using the existing wiring). I have also considered dismantling my current ignition switch for inspection and cleaning - as an attempt at a preventative measure. Question: Does anyone have an old ignition switch (failed or not, I don't care) that you wouldn't mind sending me? Either the whole switch or snip the wires as close to the switch as possible (so I have a decent length going to the plug-in connectors left over). I'll pay shipping (obviously). Thanks in advance!! : ) - Rick
  18. Hello everyone. Got home from hospital late Saturday afternoon. Very strange not to have this heavy weight on the end of my leg! Have some stitches in my knee, where they did some corrective surgery on a bone spur, and plenty of holes where the wires went through my leg. All going well so far. I'm off to see orthotics on Tuesday about a brace for my leg. Good to be home.
  19. I have a question about the low fuel light on my 96 RSTD. When I bought the bike the Low Fuel light was on all the time. After removing the tank I found that the wires to the sending unit were not routed right and had been pinched. I cut back the covering and spliced new wires in and rerouted them under the rear tank mount (where they were suposed to be) and the light went out. Now my question is, "When should the low fuel warning light come on?" I have run the bike down into reserve a couple of times and never saw the light come on. When I hit reserve I have around 1 gal of gas left based on the pump and gas milage. I would like to know when I should see the light without tempting fate while in reserve.
  20. I know I've seen a post before where some one changed their reflectors by the front wheel and the rear crash bar to LED's.The front would be no problem, but I have the saddle bag rails and cannot figure out how to hide the wires with out them being seen. Does any one that has done this give me detailed instructions? Pictures would be even better,if that is possible.
  21. I understand "E" bay lists a vendor for plug wires for the venture royal. Any info. available will be appreciated. Thanks one and all. papaw Len.
  22. Attached are some pictures of the modification I made to the starter on my 83 1st gen. The purpose of this is to give a better path to ground for the brush plate. Stock version allows a path to ground through the tabs around the plate. Snaggletooth had posted about this mod several weeks ago, but I do not know of any pictures that are available to show it. Gary This shows the location of the drilled & tapped hole. I used a 4mm screw to attach wire with. Hole is at 2 o'clock position. This shows location of hole from outside of cover. The hole in the brush plate is shown at the 7 o'clock position. Picture of grounding wires. I used two 14 gauge wires. The terminals for 12 gauge and up had too large of a mounting lug for mounting screw size I wanted to use. Wires attached to end cover. Wires attached to brush plate. View of starter mounted on engine. I have since added an 8 gauge wire that runs from the bottom mounting bolt for the starter to the right side of the engine block. I attached wire to the block at the same point the main ground wire from the battery attaches.
  23. First of all I would like to say thank you to everyone who helped last time. I now have brakes all the way around and i found a broken wire on the kickstand switch. I have now came across more problems. First of all does anyone have a CHEAP set of front rotors? Mine are both bent. I have a 1988 venture. Second problem as i put this bike back together after getting it in pieces. I have found 3 wiring plugs that I cant find a home for. The first is right behind the headlight it is a flat 3 wire plug that has a white end on it. The 3 wires are red and blue, red and either yellow or light brown and then black. The second plug is green in color two plugs one sits sideways on top of the other. The wires are light brown and black. The third plug is sticking out where the harness turns down from top to go to kickstand. About front of seat. It is a 2 plug black on end and has protective cover over the two wires. One wire is red the other is black. I know they have wiring diagrams on this sire however they show everything. The radio, CB, and everything else. My bike only has cruse nothing else. Since i didn't take it radio apart i don't know if there was even anything there. If anyone could help I would really be grateful. I dont know if it is part of it but on my dash the battery light is showing. I am guessing it is not charging.
  24. Not sure how or why, but the audio controller housing is cracked and the bottom edge has fallen off. It still works but I think only the wires are holding it on. Does anybody have a "dud" controller with a good housing???
  25. Bought a new-to-me 97 Royal Star Classic. Since I am not sure of the maintenance history I was going to change (among other things) the spark plugs and wires. Any recommendations on what brand of wires, or where to purchase from? Thanks.
