  1. well i had an oil leak in my new stratoliner, which i fixed for a second time before christmas. i had to replace a bad rocker box casting. while i had it in my new shop i did a little tweaking. i added a cobra powerpro autotune, and a patrick racing big air kit. my new d&d exaust arrived yesterday, so it may go on this weekend. this thing has got balls out power from idle on up. it is one cantankerous machine. lots of engine noise, and an archaic engine design. it handles like a wing, and really sits low. kind of a modernized piece of nostalgia. next project in line is a total service on my majesty scooter. whats every one else working on this winter?

  3. I have not been on here in quite a while. No particular reason. I am busy, but aren't we all? I recently went back to school (at 51!) for Web Development and Design. Time for a career change for me. Anyway, I was reading through some of the recent posts and you guys never cease to amaze me by how giving and generous you are. Shame on me for being away so long. I hope I can get together with many of you once I take Betty out of her winter house. Bless all of you! May all of you have a blessed Christmas!! Randy
  4. well i have my new strat in the shop for the winter. i have been plagued by an oil leak in the rear rocker box. the first fix did'nt work so i had to do it again. i had a bad casting with a flaw in it. this time i put a new casting on it and it should do the trick. i thought about warranty, but the dealer would have never found the cause, and i would,nt let them touch it any way. i thought about putting a patrick racing 120" kit in it over the winter, but i'm just getting to old to for the hot rod bikes. i did put one of the new cobra propower autotune fuel processors on it and have a patrick racing big air kit for it. i'm trying to not get carried away on decking this one out but you know how that goes. linda told me she would buy me an exaust system for christmas but i'm still researching that.

Actually they have been available fairly continuously, but I got a new batch in today. The bike is under going brake surgery this winter and needs your support.   7. I have an 83 Venture standard. Would like some ideas about adding some stuff to it. Something like maybe a radio or cb. I purchased this in Feb of this year and put on about 4000 miles on it. Runs great. Plan on changing oil before storing for the winter but have to do it outside as no place else to work on it. Did put a new rear tire on this year so will be ready for spring. Thnaks for any and all advice. Kirk
  8. Been flying RC Planes for sometime now, Had a break in it for the last 3 years. But as Winter is coming on I am back into it as so I do not go CRAZY for the next 4 or 5 months being stuck inside here in Iowa during the winter. bike is all put away and the modeling begins. My Question is ALL this talk about Sea Foam and I use it faithfully and it's wonderful stuff, why would it not work in my older nitro fuel that has been sitting for a couple years? maybe put an once or so in the gal jug? The older fuel has been indoors all this time. for that do not know our airplane fuel has nitro/methane and a percentage of oil in it. and are used in 2 stroke and Four Stroke model engines.   10. I'm about to put my new-2-me 2000 RSV away for the winter and wanted to know if there was anything in particular you guys do when winterizing your scooters? I plan on taking the battery into the house, and running the carbs dry, draining the bowls, Is there anything else I should be watching for? Do I need to remove the gas tank to get at the carb drain plugs? Oh yes, I put a good wallop of Fuel conditioner into the tank and ran it for a good 10 minutes so the fuel hit the carbs. Cheers, D.W.

Been dealing with herniated discs in my lower back for three weeks now....sure is putting a damper on my life and riding this fall....tired of restless nights and sleeping in chairs.....many trips to the chiropractor ....it has gotten a little better but, I'm afraid to do anything around the house because I don't want to make it worse....winter is around the corner and I have things that need to be done...I start a job and soon quit because of pain and in fear of doing more damage.....Gonna have to call in the grandkids for some free labor (yes they are cheap).....Not complaining, just hate not being 100%........now where is that ice bag.......?
  12. Is it really necessary? If so, then a couple more. I've read suggestions somewhere to plug the exhaust pipes if the bike is going to be parked for a while. If so, I'm thinking of a ball of aluminum foil. Any better ideas? Is there any reason to park it on its center stand, rather than the kick stand? Winter here mostly means grey days and rain, with a few riding days mixed in. So I want my bike ridable on short notice. I got it laced with seafoam, connected to my new solar battery maintainer, and covered. Any other tips? Thanks tom
  13. I've got a leaky seal on my front forks. Due to financial constraints, they will have to wait to get fixed this winter. As of now, they don't have much pressure of any kind to them and riding a low rider without much suspension is not my cup of tea.... Lol. The class system flashes E1 which I'm assuming from what I've read is due to the lack of pressure or ability to create pressure. Anywho? Any easy ways to refil these with fluid and/or air so I can have a few more good rides this season before she gets overhauled this winter? Thanks guys!
  14. Delivered the old 96 up to Blind River, ON Friday, was an awesome ride. Stopped at Tony's in Birch Run for breakfast, still eating bacon. It was very, very windy crossing the mighty Mack, had to take my time going across, a wee bit scary with some big gusts pushing me around. Going to miss the bike, but prepping the sailboat for the winter helped to ease tha pain. It's going to be a long winter..... No bites on the Venture yet, will have better luck in the spring I'm thinking. Been following Ponch's recovery....albeit slow but sure. Keep it up David, slay the Goliath that is taking you on, you can beat him! In the meantime, heading up to Elliot Lake, ON today to visit family, then it's off to do the circle route around Superior, down the east shore of Lake Michigan to home and back to work Monday. Just a quick update..... gunk:shock3:
  15. I just want to say that as a new Venture owner, (1st gen) this forum has been an immense help in helping get my project 83 road ready. Let's just say all the basics were covered, re-soldering the computer to solve the headlight problem, extensive help on bleeding the braking system, repairing plastic tabs and fuel pump alternatives just to name a few of the places I 've been here in the last couple of weeks. Needless to say, my bike is now road ready. This winter I will be doing the second gear repair with help from VentureRiders.org. Thanks to all who have contributed to this wealth of information. Twelve bucks? What a deal!
  16. Heya all, I haven't found any lists by state yet so I just thought I'd ask here...anybody from the Denver metro area? If you're out there please drop me a line, would like to ride w/ some members sometime this season. A couple of folks I ride with are headed up Sunday to shoot over Trail Ridge Rd. and prob. back down via Winter Park if anyone is interested. Love this forum... cool stuff here Oh yea... one other thing, can someone tell me how to get one of those U.S. maps on my posts? Those are pretty darn cool too! LOLOL Thanks
  17. I've been fighting with the cover on the thermostat housing leaking on my '89. When I bought it 2 1/2 years ago, it had a small leak. I took the thermostat housing off and changed all 4 O rings. Everything was fine---for a little while. A month or two later it started leaking intermittantly. Usually when left outisde in the cold, but not always. Last winter I pulled it off again and replaced the O rings again, and also the housing cover because it was mentioned here that they do warp from the exhaust pipe heat. BTW, I put it together with O-rings I purchased at my dealer. It was OK all last year, but this winter it started leaking again. The coldest my garage gets during the winter is about 32 degrees F. When I took it apart, I found that the O-ring was damaged (it looked like it'd been nicked). I remember that it was real hard to get the top on the housing last year and the OE O-ring is 2mm dia., so I installed a 1/16" O-ring. Now it seeps a little bit when it starts to warm up, but when it's hot it's fine. BTW, 1/16"=.0625" 2mm=.079" I will pick up a Yamaha O-ring tomorrow, but I think that something else is wrong because it's happening so frequently. I cleaned up the main housing surface that mates wtih the O-ring so there shouldn't be anything keeping the O-ring from seating. With the 1/16 O-ring, the top felt snug. When I use a 2mm O-ring, it is TIGHT. I'm pretty certain that on my 83' I used a 3/32" (.094") O-ring, but there is no way I could get that to fit this bike. I used a coating of Vaseline to keep from damaging the O-rings when things were assembled. Any ideas?? I'm thinking of heating up the aluminum portion of the housing (in hot water) to get it to expand so that the top will go on easier and not damage the 2mm O ring. Frank D.

  19. Today was the first day I ride my RS97 after winter, only for 2 or 3 miles. Oil change completed, but even when I check the coolant, I saw the red light dimming (Just started to get on) on temperature, as well as I was able to hear a little wistle. Next step will be to take off the whole coolant, and after clean the whole circuit then replace it. Also, a check on the fan circuit to be sure is working. Any other suggestion on this cases? (Purchase another bike is not admited!!!)
  20. Just when we thought winter was done for the year we are now getting/going to get 2-4" of that crap once again before noon tomorrow. I know some folks have had way more snow then us here in southern Michigan but really enough is enough I say. Larry
  21. Just when we hoped it was over... another 6-12" heavy wet snow forecast for the next 36 hours. This has been a brutal winter in the Northeast and I guess it's no April Fools Joke, just won't end! Got the RSV shined up, farkles installed, topped off with fresh gas -ready to ride. I'm envious of you guys that get to ride year round. Born and raised in upstate NY and love it although the weather, gun laws and taxes are making it tough to justify anymore. Awright, I'll stop whining now. Just a severe case of Cabin Fever. I feel better now.
  22. Folks, this has been weighing heavily for a few days now so I'm going to put it out here and hope that you all give it some thought. It has been a long winter for many of us and I think that we all need a long soul cleansing ride to wash those winter doldrums away. It is perfectly understandable and happens to some extent every winter. I'm talking about the tone of some of our responses to one another. There just seem to be way too many posts and responses lately that end up with one or more members going after each other much more aggressively than is necessary. Sometimes it is the result of a short, snippy and totally unnecessary response to a question or opinion and at other times it seems to be a problem with somebody being entirely too thin skinned and taking offense at something that was perhaps meant more in fun and not as a smart remark. One thing that has always set this forum apart from so many others on the Internet is our patience and willingness to help each other. Even if it's a question that may have been discussed multiple times before, we have recognized the fact that some folks are newer and may not have seen the previous discussion. We also recognize that some folks here are much better with computers than others may be and we realize that searching for and finding existing information is difficult for some of those people. That is why we often discuss things over and over again or at least help them by posting a link to an existing discussion without a smart remark to accompany the response. We have also been able to disagree about things without it turning into personal attacks against another members opinion. If don't don't like a certain product, whether it is a tool to sync carbs, a tire brand, whatever, it should be easy enough to state an opinion and explain why you feel the way you do without telling somebody else that they are stupid or don't know what they are talking about just because they happen to have had a different experience with that product than you have. The strength of VentureRider.org is that we have a fantastic group of folks that generally bend over backwards to help each other. I've said many times, our bond here is the love of the Venture, Royal Star and other motorcycles. We are here to enjoy that which brings us together, not to dwell on things that might tear us apart. None of us are perfect and we all have a bad day now and then. I have actually censored myself here by going back and deleting my own posts a few times because when I read it back later, I realized that it did not come across as I had intended or I had said something that I quickly realized was uncalled for. The best advise I have to offer to all of you and to myself is to NOT post if you are upset or angry about something. Walk away and think about it for a while. After you type a post when you are a bit miffed about something, take a few minutes and read through it again a couple of times before you hit that submit button. You are the greatest group of people that I have ever had the pleasure of being associated with. I am very proud of the family that we have built here and if we stay true to the the basic principals that this club was founded on, we will continue building those lifelong friendships that so many of us have found here.   24. This winter is dragging on. Had a few good weeks of nice weather. But today, it decided to be winter again. 4-12 inches forecast, with winds gusting to 35. At 1:00 p.m. today the snow was already over bumper deep on the highway going past my farm. Visibility in the country right now is about 200 feet tops. So I guess it is official, I am ready for spring........I feel a little better now!
