  1. On Friday night i got a knock on my door about 1030 pm and its my neighbour asking me if I knew that my bike was tipped over against another neighbours truck. Of course the answer is NO, so I go have a look and I see my scoot tipped over the right side and the windshield is against the truck, the bike is flat on the ground with both wheels totally off the ground. I cant even get close to it to lift her up as the bike is right tight against the truck. I got get my neighbour and ask him to move his truck and we try not to damage anything any farther. I think I got lucky and the clearview windshield caught his tire first slowing the bike falling and the bike didnt actually contact any paint on the truck. I lifted the bike when the truck was moved and stood her up and have a look for damage, i have a couple of spots on the crash bars the size of quarters , a bit of rubbing on the fairing and the hiway peg, a broken but still useable brake lever, and a lot of scratches on the windshield from the truck wheel and tire. And yes, the backside of the crashbar did make a mark in the water pump pipe but it seems to be ok also. On Sat morning I buffed the windshield using Plexus and a soft cloth and kept at it for about 20 minutes, and the scatches almost have vanished, i was sure i was going to have to replace that shield because it was bent so far and scratched so badly. I am impressed with how durable that Clearview windshield is and how clear i got it with just a bit of buffing by hand. I am also real impressed with how well the G1's are built as I really dont have much in the way of real damage!! I would love to catch the guys that thought the city-fied version of cow tipping would be fun, to give the new boots I just bought a work out on their butts! Brian
  2. Hey fellow riders, I just had my second windshield replaced because of cracking from the bottom. The first, about a year and a half ago, was cracked between the left two bolt holes. It was replaced by the dealer under warranty, no problems. This time it cracked out of the far left bolt hole. I printed off the info from this site about the rear fairing bosses breaking and the support bar being a little out of shape. When the dealer took the windshield off, that was the case. They replaced the rear fairing and the support bar along with the windshield, all under warranty. Hope this solves the issue for future cracking as I only have one year left under warranty. Great dealer to work with, Yamaha Jack's in Ellensburg, Wa. I can tell the rear fairing is a lot more evenly spaced from the handlebar mounts so I'm assuming the support bar was a lot of the problem. Don.
  3. When I talked myself into buying the RSTD last April one of the key points I sold myself on in trading my V-Star 950 cruiser was that any time I wanted I could pop off the quick release windshield and backrest and I'd have the style and open air feel of a cruiser. 5 months later I've got the windshield and backrest off so I can get into the details of my baby's weekly bath and wax. I'm about to put them back on when the thought occurs that I've never (NEVER) taken her out without the clip-ons attached. Hmmm. Helmet on and off we go. The difference in feel is amazing. It's like having a completely different bike hidden inside the shell of the RSTD. The open air feel, the perception of freedom, the (probably imagined) nimbleness of response, all brought back the feeling that I loved on my 950. I love the big screen on the highway, and my wife loves the backrest and armrests, but I think the plexi and the backrest may be spending more time on the shelf than they've been used to when I'm going 1-up in town... It feels like the very first time....
  4. I talked to the owner, John, at F4 about getting a new windshield on my RSV. I told him I wanted a vent and he said the standard answer is no, but since he's the owner maybe. Well, he checked out the shield and said he could get the Goldwing vent installed. I know there was discussion on this before, the lack of a vent was a deciding point for many. I'ts the same height as stock but 2 in. wider per side. The Lexan sounds like a superior product and for $30 more than comparable Clearview shield, I think I'll go for it.
  5. Well I ordered a new F4 windshield yesterday and suppose to have it by 530 PM tomorrow the 11th..It is a F4 +2 with vent..I will let you all know how I like it soon.(I ran out of chrome to order so working on other stuff now) Next on the agenda is going to be an Ultimate seat with Black full Inlay Ostrich..Gonna wait a few weeks on that as I need Debby to sit on one and make sure She likes it.
  6. Well, I had read about using Lemon Pledge on bikes at some other sites. I tried it today on the 06 RSV and behold, it worked great! I have been using Honda Spray Polish and hear that they are discontinuing it. (It worked great for me too.) I used the Pledge all over the bike including the windshield and it shines like it did when I saw it on the show room floor. Hey $3.00 a can beats $5.50 in my book any day! And it sure makes the bike smell good! I don't know if it will clean the bugs off like Honda Polish but, we will see. I also use Go-Jo hand cleaner (Creamy Type) on my other bikes windshield and it covers up or seems to remove all the little scratch marks and swirls in it that you see when riding into the sun. Just rub it on the windshield with my fingers and wipe it with a terry-cloth towel. Dog
  7. OK, I've got the fairing almost all put back together, but...that chrome molding I was warned about isn't behaving...I think. When I get it in, the ends and bottom are flush against the fairing, but the top is about an eighth of an inch away from the windshield. Well actually the center is about a sixteenth but the part between the center and the ends is about an eighth away. I've checked as I have installed it and I can see the tabs going into their slots, but the molding still doesn't sit flush against the windshield. Anyone know what I may doing wrong? According to the write up in another thread there should be no gap between the molding and the windshield. If the tabs are going where they should, what is messing up? Anyone? Andy
  8. I wonder if there is a slightly lower windshield than stock for my 07 venture, oem or otherwise. I think I would like it to be a couple of inches lower. Have considered cutting it down but it is quite scratched up anyway. Any advice??
  9. My Ventures windshield has a coating that is coming off.I used 2000 grit sand paper to clean it up.It took the coating off but the windshield is quite foggy to look through. Is there any way I can salvage it?I hate to have to buy another one.I was thinking of cutting it down and painting it black.Unless I can clear it up.
  10. Yesterday while riding on the Highway I noticed my windshield was getting closer to my helmet, then I saw the plastic chrome piece lifting up and my windshield was lifting up. I eased up on the throtle and put my left hand up to hold the winshield in place when it broke free from my fairing. I was lucky and had a grip of it and pulled over without a miss hap. The one screw holding it solid to the fairing was off and inside my fairing. One screw was lost and the others where still screwed in but the windshield just pulled out since they are open ended slots. I was lucky, and I have never understood why Yamaha only made one connection for the windshield.
  11. Hey Folks, Just wanted to post up and see if anyone has a decent used windshield for a 1st gen. Perhaps one that was taken off when it was upgraded to a clearview or such. It has to be in good shape, I dont want something all scratched up or cut down, I'm pretty picky on looking through a shield f anyone has a good one laying around that they want to get rid of I'd like to chat with you...Thanks.
  12. Today I cut down my stock windshield to 12". I was very happy with the height on my test ride, I looked through it but could still sit up higher and look over it for the rain. I then decided to try and buff the scratches out of it and it seems there is a film on it that I ruined. Now the shield is useless. Has anyone had any luck looking through the show chrome shield, is it clear enough. Kinda frustraited now, but I have no choice but to find a new shield.
  13. Has anyone tried cutting the bottom of an RSV windshield and then slotting and drilling new mounting holes? I like this Idea since I think I would have problems getting such a smooth curve cutting the top portion and it would bother me every time I looked at it. Seems possible - potential issues. Limits fine tuning of height after the first cut so I had better get the height I want first time. I'm thinking 3" shorter for me but will check sight line over top with some scotch tape and inch marks. Bottom area of windshield will be slightly wider but seems there is enough clearance in the slot it fits into to accept the wider width. Anything else?
  14. Broke fairing open and ended up snapping one of the mount tabs on the chrome windshield trim - but it is the tab on the end with the screw hole in it. Saw the post for fixing the tabs on the inside part of the trim...Will that also work for the end tabs, or do I have to buy a new one? Appreciate any help I can get. MnM

    Irony

Some days you are the windshield, some days you are the bug!!! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/07/03/motorcyclist-dies-helmet-protest_n_889427.html?&ncid=edlinkusaolp00000009
  16. I recently pulled the chrome trim off the fairing and found that the plastic around 4 of the 6 windshield mounting holes was cracked completely through. I emailed my dealer photos and he said to bring it in and they'll replace the fairing and anything else related to the problem. Off to the dealer tomorrow. Anyone else had this problem? Dennis
  17. I've got a great "BOSS" 3 pocket windshield bag on my RSTD, love it. But I would like to know, what 3 pocket bag members are using on their RSVs? Web links would be good for pics and price. I have a wide F4 windshield without a vent. But I would say anything that fits stock will fit the same. Thanks, Mike G in SC
  18. Does anyone know of any product that can be put on the windshield to help it shed rain? I checked Rain-X and on the bottle it says to not use it on plastics. During our upcoming trip, if we run into a lot of wet weather, would be nice if I could see out of the windshiels...and my helmet visor. Thanks.
  19. I want to get a shorter tinted windshield but not sure about size. Is the windshield measured from the base of the screen itself or from the top of the chrome strip it sticks out of? Mine measures 17" from the strip.
  20. My brother bought my '88 VR and before he had a chance to ride it after he got it home his area was hit with the tornadoes on April 27th. He was fortunate in that he had only minor damage to his home. His bike was in his shed but was blown over and the windshield and right side mirror were both broken. I had a spare windshield luckily and have already set him up with that. He still needs a right side mirror. If anyone has a spare please let me know what you would need for it and I'll be happy to pay a reasonable price for it. We have tried ebay but have been outbid. We'll keep trying, but I thought someone here may have a spare lying around... Thanks! Don yamadawg
  21. I have been thinking about cutting a windshield down to 3-4 inches for a summer windshield on my 2000 RSV. Anybody try anything like this? Would like some more wind to keep me cool for summer riding. Bob
  22. Well, I had today off and thought I'd work more on the bike. It was a good day for me. I've got pics of my "firsts"... 1. Installed an extra power port in trunk. Plan to install another below passenger left leg but had to order the plug to get a water proof one. 2. Installed the round vents in my windshield. This was a bit nerve racking for me because I didn't want to ruin the windshield. It was actually pretty easy though and turned out nice. I have them a little more toward the center than some I've seen but some reviews I read said you don't get much air when they are more outside...took it for a spin and get a little bit of air...nothing too spectacular but enough help on 110 degree days. 3. Pulled the trailer. Finally got the trailer tagged and road ready. I've never pulled a trailer before with the RSV, so I took it out on the road for a little bit then came back and put the wife on to see how it rides 2up. All in all it did well. We road it around town for about 25 miles and took it on the highway. Pulled straight and no big issues. 4. Tested out our new Scala Rider Q2 Multiset bluetooth headsets on this ride. They worked pretty well. We sometimes had a hard time connecting via intercom but I think that's more our learning curve than the device. We also connected our phones to them and received phone calls while riding. Wife said she couldn't even tell I was on a motorcycle even though I was going about 55 at the time. All in all a great day. We are just about ready for our 2700 mile trip in June. Next step, load up the trailer and pull it around to ensure I'm comfortable with the extra weight.:cool10:
  23. Looking for some help. I have an 05 RSTD with the quick disconnect windshield. I want to purchase the wide open plactics audio fairing and they say it uses the factory windshield mounts. After looking at the pictures on the web page they show an 05 RSTD with the fairing but the windshiled brackets are not the quick disconnect style. Does anyone know if the windshiled brackets for a 2001 RSTD will fit on the 2005 model? Any help would be great. The web page for the fairing is www.wideopencustom.com
  24. Hey Guys, I'm going to be installing vent(s) in my stock windshield and am just wondering if anyone has installed two Goldwing vents? Or do you think one is enough? I get very hot in the summer and need the airflow.
  25. Has anyone got any idea as to how I can get all the hardcoating off of my windshield? I cut it down a few months back and did so by tapeing it up with masking tape. When I got ready to peel the tape off, the hardcoating came with the tape(mostly) but there is still some stuck on that I've tried to retape and and pull off but it just will not turn loose. Any suggestions???
