    New Rider Question.......

Hi folks, I have only been riding about 2 years. Last week the wife and I decided to get a 2008 RSV. Prior to that we rode a Honda VTX 1300S. I realized that there would be a weight difference (The RSV is about 150 lbs heaver), and a much bigger bike overall, so I am prepared to get adjusted to the new rride, and I know it will take some time. I have about 13K on my other bike, so as I said still a new rider. After riding the RSV 2 weekends I seem to be fairly unstable at slow speeds especially riding 2-up with the wife on the back. We are both average size and I am about 6'-1". Don't seem to have any issues flat foot on the ground. I have developed slow speed issues particulary in parking lots trying to turn into parking spaces. Do I just need to give a little more time and be patient? Will the stability come back after I get used to the RSV? We absolutely love our new RSV and can't wait to take a couple of trips together this summer, But I don't want my wife to start getting nerveous (as she has never rode her own bike), and stop wanting to go on rides every weekend with me. Sorry about the rookie question, but you folks seem like a great group and I know that early in your riding days you may have experienced this your selves. Thank you Reggie - Tampa K4DNA:bighug:
  2. Why am I sad at Christmas? It's one of the few times we stop our busy day to day and take a look around the neighborhood. A aging couple the man continues to work. He draws social security now but made some mistakes in life and has no pension or retirement fund. With house payments and other bills he must work to help out. His wife just retired at 60 and has a small retirement check. Social security is 2 years away. She has pressing needs at home a elderly mother to care for and a 9 year old grand daughter to raise. Her first retirement check after they deduct her monthly health insurance premiums leaves only $37.00 for the month. These are some of the lucky ones there doing better then many. My wife comes home and tells the story of a young working mother who says. I'm not putting up a christmas tree this year. I have no spare money to buy my little girl anything and if I don't put up a tree maybe she won't notice it's christmas. She doesn't know it but her little girl will have christmas gifts this year. As I drive up the road to work I notice many run down mobile homes. No underpinning, exposed water lines, and a big vent pipe sticking out a hole in the side with an old wood burner fired up.It happens every year with winter coming on. Some cold night they will bank the fire to heavy or plug in some electric heaters to help and the next morning there is nothing left but ashes. Yes several will stop take a look around there community and give to some needy families this christmas.I often think that christmas is the only time of year many children get anything at all. Giving this time of year is all good and well but the fact remains. Give a needy family a dollar this month and next month they will stilll have a need. Teach them some skills and maybe they can improve there quality of life. After christmas it's back to our day to day and the world turns.

  4. Tommy thanks for the use of the battery and the shop to try and fix the blonde when the stator died.I know it was not a long way to get me but I have to say Thanks to you and your wife. I hope what we did to your scoot lets you enjoy Bertha over the next few days while it is warm. Jeff
  5. I did a search and this was posted 5 times last year and I think it's worth posting again. I don't know the author. A Christmas Poem: The embers glowed softly, and in their dim light, I gazed round the room and I cherished the sight. My wife was asleep, her head on my chest, My daughter beside me, angelic in rest. Outside the snow fell, a blanket of white, Transforming the yard to a winter delight. The sparkling lights in the tree I believe, Completed the magic that was Christmas Eve. My eyelids were heavy, my breathing was deep, Secure and surrounded by love I would sleep. In perfect contentment, or so it would seem, So I slumbered, perhaps I started to dream. The sound wasn't loud, and it wasn't too near, But I opened my eyes when it tickled my ear. Perhaps just a cough, I didn't quite know, Then the sure sound of footsteps outside in the snow. My soul gave a tremble, I struggled to hear, And I crept to the door just to see who was near. Standing out in the cold and the dark of the night, A lone figure stood, his face weary and tight. A soldier, I puzzled, some twenty years old, Perhaps a Marine, huddled here in the cold. Alone in the dark, he looked up and smiled, Standing watch over me, and my wife and my child. "What are you doing?" I asked without fear, "Come in this moment, it's freezing out here! Put down your pack, brush the snow from your sleeve, You should be at home on a cold Christmas Eve!" For barely a moment I saw his eyes shift, Away from the cold and the snow blown in drifts.. To the window that danced with a warm fire's light Then he sighed and he said "Its really all right, "I'm out here by choice. I'm here every night." "It's my duty to stand at the front of the line, That separates you from the darkest of times. No one had to ask or beg or implore me, I'm proud to stand here like my fathers before me. My Gramps died at ' Pearl on a day in December," Then he sighed, "That's a Christmas 'Gram always remembers." My dad stood his watch in the jungles of ' Nam ', And now it is my turn and so, here I am. I've not seen my own son in more than a while, But my wife sends me pictures, he's sure got her smile. Then he bent and he carefully pulled from his bag, The red, white, and blue.. an American flag. I can live through the cold and the being alone, Away from my family, my house and my home. I can stand at my post through the rain and the sleet, I can sleep in a foxhole with little to eat. I can carry the weight of killing another, Or lay down my life with my sister and brother.. Who stand at the front against any and all, To ensure for all time that this flag will not fall." "So go back inside," he said, "harbor no fright, Your family is waiting and I'll be all right." "But isn't there something I can do, at the least, Give you money," I asked, "or prepare you a feast? It seems all too little for all that you've done, For being away from your wife and your son." Then his eye welled a tear that held no regret, "Just tell us you love us, and never forget. To fight for our rights back at home while we're gone. To stand your own watch, no matter how long. For when we come home, either standing or dead, To know you remember we fought and we bled. Is payment enough, and with that we will trust, That we mattered to you as you mattered to us."
  6. A SWEET MACHINE!! :thumbsup2:The local dealer has the Raider S had one on the show room floor Saturday. It is really a nice machine. I love the paint and the way it sits, low and mean. Lucky the wife was with me and made me leave or you never know what might have happened.
  7. This will take a little explaining, but please bear with me; it's been a long time coming and if I don't tell someone who will appreciate it, I'll bust! I got my '98 RSTD back in May, after about a 25 year dry spell of being without. As luck would have it, I didn't even get to ride in the spring because of hernia surgery, followed shortly by a minor heart attack and stent surgery. When I finally got the OK to do things again, I wanted to get W/W tires and pipes put on and I had to get it lowered before I was going to attempt going anywhere. I also wanted to get the 8k service done way early so I'd have a good warm & fuzzy. Finally got all that done and started getting some time on the bike to get my "sea legs" back so to speak and have spent the last couple of months regaining my proficiency (to MY level of expectation). My wife of almost 40 years never rode with me more a couple of miles (and only one time at that) on either my Bonneville ('69) or Suzuki ('82) back in the day. Well, it seems she has a yen to ride now. She got herself a neat little leather jacket and the cutest little bitty engineer boots I've ever seen. A friend was getting rid of his Harley and his wife gave mine her helmet (used maybe 2 times), and we were pretty well set to go. She got a cold and was off the radar for about a month, then I had a less severe bout and a lingering sore throat, that finally went away. Which brings us to today. After she went for some last minute groceries for Thanksgiving, we donned our duds and took a perfect 75 degree ride through the country near here, for about an hour and a half. I almost cried. I love riding, especially out in the country. It is SO much more fulfilling and fun to have her ride with me after all these years. I can't imagine a better day (in this world) than today! She enjoyed the ride and the bike; I was ecstatic. So, when I give thanks tomorrow (today, now) it will be for a lot of things...life, love, God's blessings and yes..my motorcycle and the day before Thanksgiving, 2007, when me and my wife went motorcycle riding 2-up. M-m-m-m-m...Man life is good! Steve.R (aka autopilot)
  8. NH residents. The wife and I are seriously considering moving to NH in a year or two when I retire. I've been to Portsmouth two times now and really liked the place but housing seems pretty high there. I'd like to be some great riding roads and the wife wants to either be on or near water and hopefully we can buy a boat. I've been advised to stay near the coast and in southern NH to avoid most of the mountain snows. I'd like to be within a hour of a decent size airport (Boston or Manchester?) to take trips to see the kids and grandkids. I'll also need to start my 2nd career so I'd need to be close enough to towns/cities where jobs are available. Any advice would be appreciated. Good, bad or indifferent.

    Update on Gary N.

I hope I'm not out of line here, but I thought that this story from The Windsor Star would be appreciated. Mike http://www.canada.com/windsorstar/news/story.html?id=fbfd3e0d-8a60-4430-845b-6d0314178e8c Man whose wife died in crash still in ICU Trevor Wilhelm, Windsor Star Published: Monday, November 12, 2007 Nearly a month after the motorcycle crash that killed his wife during a retirement trip, Woodslee's Gary Nantais remains in serious condition in the surgical intensive care unit of an Ohio hospital. The retirement dreams of Leslie Nantais, 54, and her husband Gary, 55, were cut short Oct. 17, when, according to police, a teenager failed to yield at a stop sign and slammed into their motorcycle. The 16-year-old girl who hit them was treated and released from hospital following the accident. Gary, a General Motors employee, and Leslie, a teacher at Essex District high school, had both retired and were living out their dreams riding the open road. The couple, who celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary in September, had stopped in Ohio while on a road trip to Virginia. They were heading east on U.S. Route 62 in Holmes County when a Sunfire ran a stop sign at the intersection of State Road 557 and hit them. The Nantais' sons, Matt and Jeff, have created a website. At memoryofleslie.blogspot.com people can post their thoughts and memories about Leslie. "We felt like we should have a place where everyone can speak about our mom Leslie," the brothers wrote on the website. "She touched many people's lives." The messages come from the Nantais' friends, Leslie's former students and people the couple met only briefly in their travels. "My wife Sam and I met Gary and Leslie only once," wrote Vin Tirelli. "They are truly wonderful people and had a way about them that made everyone who spoke with them walk away with a smile. "To say we are heartbroken about this tragedy would be an understatement." © The Windsor Star 2007

WIFE WAS A LITTLE SHAKEE WITH CAM. check out this LiveDigital media.
  11. Well just got back from rescuing an HD as they were on vacation out of Tennessee and down here on vacation . I was coming up from behind approaching an HD riding 2 up . Noticed that they were noticing something strange until they pulled over . I pulled in behind them to notice that there rear tire going flat . Well I told the rider I would do 2 up with his wife and follow him to a garage where we could get the tire fied . Only a short mile down the road it was . The rider's wife asked as we were on our way if I had any experience riding and riding 2 up ? I understood her concern as she was placing herself life in jeoperdy with me driving . I told her that I just got this scoot yesterday , But I am learning and haven't tipped it over yet !:rotf: The look on her face was undescribable . Well we got down to the garage and my freind already had 2 cages on the rack and no tire and the flat one has a chunk of glass in it and non-repairable . So I fetched my truck and trailer and returned to load up the scoot and head down to the HD House . So this time the HD warranted a trailer ride . They were a nice couple and told them about our family . They are eager to look upon the site after they return home . Hopefully by now , their scoot's tire is replaced and the wind is to their back . Hope they have a safe trip home . I just thought I had to post , to share to you the look on her face when I made my experience reply . It was priceless ! BEER30
  12. Well it started Friday with 1 -an accident with my trailer(old sno-mobile one that I knew tilted but not swiveled) that sidswiped a truck turning in other lane going other way 2 -Brother passing away on Sunday morning Thanks to all for condolences 3 -Wife hitting car driving thro a stop light infront of her from out of nowhere(must have been talking and didn't see it as everyone else was stopped). Think our 2005 car is tottaled but will have to wait and see what adjuster says. one person taken to hospital to check for seatbelt injury. Wife was shaken up a scene but seemed fine for about 1 1/2 hours then shock wore off and broke down.(first accident for her) What a week!!!!!!!!!!
  13. Did I mention how much I love my wife? I really, really love my wife! My dad use to race three wheelers, and I have wanted one of my own for a very long time. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Ggerg1186/DSCF2154.jpg
  14. Hello all, I'm a new member here, but the wife and I have been lurking here for a while. I've Been owning and driving motorcycles since 1966, and the wife since 1992. The last one we owned that would be comparable to the Star Venture was our 1998 FLTRI Road Glide HD. I'm riding a 650 Suzuki thumper now. Never owned a Gold Wing or BMW full boat offering. The wife drives a Kawasaki 750 Vulcan. We were quoted $16,000 out the door price for a 2008 Venture at Okeechobee, Fl. with no trade in. BMW and/or HD can't come close to that price for a total package tour bike. Should we buy? We're looking for comfort for two-up, prime concern. We haven't driven one yet, but the room for two seems better than the other's offerings. Heft off the side stand was substantial... Thanks ahead of time for the responses.
  15. I saw a white 2nd Gen at the Helendorf Inn in Helen Georgia this weekend. Was it one of our members? I was there with the wife and without my scoot. Sorry I didn't get to meet you. Mark
  16. Last night while my black lab was taking my wife & I for a walk, a former boss and current friend of my wife's stopped to give us uninvited advise that anyone over 50 should not be riding a motorcycle. I didn't respond to him cause really, whats the point. I would like to show my wife some of the stats that I have seen here in months past on accidents/fatalities broken down by age &/or experience. I could see that he'd bothered her with his comments. Anybody have that stuff book marked? Tim Lantz Iowa Guy
  17. I picked this little bike up last week from a garage sale for $50.00, It has not ran for over 13 years. I changed the Oil, Plug and cleaned the tank out a bit. Got a new battery and cleaned the carb. and what do you know. she fired right up. My Question is when a bike sits that long is it normal for it to smoke for a while out of the muffler? (think i got a bad ring?) Valves?) My wife and I love going on the back roads here in Iowa but haven't since we bought the RSV.. I just don't like being on gravel roads with the much wight under me. Thanks, Jeff
  18. I know this question has probably come up thousands of times, but I'm on the verge of trading my 05 RSTD in for a Midnight Venture I found. Is there anyone who has went from a RSTD to a Venture and found pros & cons that can help me make a better decision? I love my RSTD but recently rode a friends HD Ultra Glide and my wife loved the added comfort and I really liked being able to listen to a radio. I also like the idea of the back trunk for helmets and stuff. I took my wife to a Yamaha dealer and she really felt good on the back of the Venture.
  19. Well tomorrow the wife and I are headed to PA. to visit our daughter for a few days. She lives in Northampton which is right around the corner from Catasauqua, PA (home of SportMax). I've been communicating with John (the owner) the past few weeks on changing out my Venture to the VMax final drive next time we came down to visit our daughter...I've never liked the top end gearing in the Venture, so hopefully this will move 5th gear more to my satisfaction. Hopefully, the wife and I can make a couple of day trips Thursday and Friday before we come home Saturday. I'll try to give a report once I return on the difference. Later...
  20. Hey all you motorcycle campers out there - looking for personal recommendations on camping trailers to pull with my Venture. I just got back from the Wing Ding in Billings, MT and there were several vendors there with pretty nice camping trailers for motorcycles - but I know there are a lot more makes and models then the 3 or 4 that were in Billings. Anybody got any feedback, positive or negative, on any makes/models? We would only be sleeping 2 as it is just my wife and I. Thanks. (and no, I wasn't looking to go over to the Wing nation - my wife rides a Gold Wing and she wanted to go to the Wing Ding - good excuse to ride my Venture through the Rockies)
  21. Kerker 4-1 Any way to quiet this baby down. Kerker makes a silencer would that replace my existing muffler or is that what I have now. Maybe the baffling needs repacked or my ears are more sensitive with age. 75mph not bad but 40-55 is to noisy. Wife was in bed and she could here me going through the gears 1/2 mile down the road. Must be the early morning fog. Stage 5 jet kit with individual K&N's still get 30 mpg.
  22. I'm looking for a better seat for my 1st gen venture. The stock one is fine for a few hours But after that my wife and i both start getting alittle uncomfortable. Does anyone know of a good replacement??

    Mesh Gear

I picked up a Mosse mesh/leather riding jacket this year. I don't know how I survived previous summers wearing my HOT leathers. My wife picked up the Mesh tek2 jacket from First Gear this year also. This mesh stuff is great.
  24. I used to ride without them, then regular leather driving gloves. This year I picked up a pair of fingerless gloves with hard Kevlar knuckles. When you think about it this doesn't make much sense. I just picked up a new pair of gloves from JC Whitney. Gladiate-R Kevlar leather gloves. ($49.99) They are full fingered and offer great protection. They may be too warm for hot summer days, but this fall they will be great. Heck even today it's a bit cooler out (mid 70's) and they were just fine. A couple that we ride with locally was in a severe bike/semi accident. Both were wearing full head to toe protective gear. The husband died from blunt force trauma, but his wife survived. Neither had any road rash. My wife and I are spending the money now to get full protective gear. What happened to them convinced us it's worth the money.
