  1. Took off from Don's before 4 this morning. Got about a hr away and car started to shimmey a little. Figured I had thrown a weight. Continued and it just got worse til it popped and got so bad I had to pull over. Looked at right front wheel and a Lug Nut was backed off about half way. That would not have been a major problem but it was the ONLY ONE ON THE WHEEL!!! 4 were gone!! and they are only 5!!! Not only that but three studs were gone. Seared off. The two studs that were left were on the same side of the bolt pattern but I jacked it up stole a lug nut from rear wheel and tightened it up and made it home with 2 lug nuts! And several stops to check them. I don't have a clue as to where or why or when they left. But I made it home and got to see some friends!!! It was worth it.
  2. ...and ate me a Mustang. I knew it would be easy, lol. We both started off kinda normal from the stop sign and I heard his motor wind up so I had to do the same thing, it was over as soon as it started. I was prolly 4 or 5 bike lengths ahead when I hit second. The kid started to make a u-turn and so did I. I started off up on the back wheel and rolled past him. He followed a bit but would not even up for another run, hahahaha. Wonder if he will do that again with an old bagger.
  3. My 87 Venture's speedometer just stopped working. I have checked the connections and when I checked the cable on the front wheel I spun the cable manually and it changed the odometer so it is apparently connected at the top. I was on the highway today and when I tried to engage the cruise the power light came on but I could not "set" a speed. Does the cruise control work off the speedo cable? Could something at the front wheel connection be loose or broken? I have the rotor covers so it is somewhat of a problem getting at the connection. Thanks for any help.
  4. When I removed my front wheel all I needed to do was loosen the main axle bolt and remove the calipers. I mounted the new tire and put the wheel back on then torqued the bolt to 58lbs. I read on a forum about an axle clamp bolt - is there a bolt I need to tighten to secure the main axle bolt?
  5. I removed my front wheel to take it in for a new tire. When I put it back together do I need to put any grease on the axle?
  6. I have a HF ATV jack (el-cheapo) and a carbone-one lift adapter. I'm "planning" on taking off the rear wheel this weekend to clean/lube the splines, etc. Couple of questions: 1) Will the HF jack lift the bike high-enough to allow me to remove the rear wheel? 2) Will the removal of the rear-wheel affect the counter-balance of the bike on the carbone-one lift adapter? 3) How "unstable" will the bike be on the lift-adapter with the rear wheel removed? I'm attempting to eliminate any CATASTROPHIC surprises during this maintenace event! Thanks!
  7. My "84 VR has the dreaded 2nd gear issue that's slowly getting worse. It's to the point that just keeping up with traffic leaving a light will cause it to jump out. It's a sidecar rig and 2nd is really handy to get the tugboat rolling. I just lucked into a trans gearset out of a '89 VR. It's my understanding that it the same as the '84 except it has some updated parts including the thrust washer. I didn't get the driven middle gear and I realize they should be kept as a matched set. No forks or shift drum either. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4028/4511886358_c30c1708fa_b.jpg I'm debating how to proceed. Do it just put this split thrust washer on in my 84 and call it done? Do I swap in this entire gearset? If I do that do I have to swap the middle gear to keep a matched set? I'm assuming that I would have to re-shim everything them too. Doesn't the worn split washer affect middle gear backlash? If so it would seem that it's pretty forgiving. Should I swap this 2nd gear wheel and 5th gear wheel onto the 84 shaft? I assume you should swap over the the 5th gear pinion too since it meshes with the 5th gear wheel, but I've changed many automotive trans gears w/o replace the mating one without issue. Is undercutting the dogs necessary or is it just a bit of insurance? The answers to some of these questions may become self evident when I get it apart. Any other magic I need to know? I know that's a lot of questions but I'm trying to gather as much input as possible before I open her up.
  8. Checking Craig's list as I do every day I came across this 2006 with the "RARE" chrome wheel option. http://toledo.craigslist.org/mcy/1730466812.html

    Thanks and surprise

I want to thank everyone for all the spline reading and tech on greasing them, also on removing therear wheel it was a breeze after reading how, also the carbon one stand with legs is neater than slice bread too, so thanks for all the contributed to the tech section.. Now I'm kinda tick and not surprise when I took the rear wheel off there was not enough grease on the grear splines nor the pins in the hub to cover a eraser, I mean zip none, this bike has less than 8k miles and to be as dry and they are was joke, I'm such thankful I read about it here.. Get the E3's on tomorrow and back together tomorrow night then I get to look at my new tires and wonder how they would ride, 80% chance of rain Sat. and Sunday..
  10. I have a couple more questions. 1988 venture First my speedometer is off about 15 to 20 miles an hour anyone have any idea about why or how to fix. I also have a wine which I think is the speedometer. I heard a really loud squeal when i get up to a certain speed, goes away when i slow down. I have seen in this site how to grease the speedometer but I don't know if it is in the head or down at the wheel. Second is there anyway to adjust the clutch on these bikes? When i let out on the clutch it goes almost all the way out before it starts to engage. Third any ideals on why i have a hesitation when I first give it gas. It will do it at almost any speed. Is this what happens when the carbs are out of sync or is this maybe from the diaphragms leaking.
  11. I have a 1st generation. It is in pretty good shape. My question is when you are going between 103 and 116 kph, there is a high pich noise coming from the front of the motor.I have done the wheel bearings and replaced the front tire. Can anyone tell me what this could be.Thanks
  12. What is proper assembly of rear wheel on 83 xvz12? From right 1. axle bolt 2. washer 3. brake caliper bracket 4. ??missing spacer?? 5. RH oilseal and bearing 6. etc... I seem to have too much gap on right side, and brake caliper bracket is clear to move too far?? toward wheel, bumping brake rotor bolt heads
  13. Taking a right hand corner with plenty of lean my spring loaded right floor board drags. Taking a left corner with plenty of lean the boot loop on the kick stand (it is fully up) drags and recently caused the back wheel to hop right a few inches. That was a little unsettling. Didn't pay much attention for location of wear and tear until that wheel hop thing. After examining the kickstand loop. it appears that the bottom side is now about half worn through. Am I way too aggressive in the corners? lol Is my experience normal or is there something wrong with the kick stand or something else? Jack
  14. I have been considering a pull behind trailer and wsa wondering if any of you have looked into or know about the in-line brand of trailer? It seems like a very good idea to have the wheel of the trailer track the same as the bike. Any ideas and/or information will be appreciated

    Speed wobble?

New tires, balanced: front 36psi rear 42 psi wheel bearings felt solid when i tested them (front wheel on the ground and slid the wheel side to side) air set to 10 in the front, 15 in the rear.. i'm getting a slow wobble at speed (75mph) and also when going into turns at lower speed (60-65mph) i'm sure i should check the tripple tree bolts and the steering head bearing, but what else would you guys suggest to check?
  16. The white stuff is gone, the salt on the road is nowhere to be seen and it's about 80F. I took the Venture out for a 2 hour ride, saw lots of bikes and the highway traffic was minimal. It was so nice, the Harley riders were even waving! I was traveling on my way back home along a dirt road, when a woman quickly backed straight out of her driveway without looking. Since I was on gravel and driving slower than normal, I managed to stop about 2' from her side door. The look on her face was both of shock and horror. She said she was sorry and pulled back into her drive way again. Why don't people think when they get behind the wheel of a car? If I was driving a full size truck she would be dead and her 3 passengers hurt. I'm just glad it was a dirt road, didn't hit her and I didn't drop it. Here we go again... looking out for those people who aren't looking.
  17. Riderduke came down for a little "wheel" work with us this weekend! :cool10:Just a few pics of Sleeperhawk "teaching" Riderduke how to ungrease and grease! Humm, I think the guys got more on them than on the bike! Thankfully, I did not have my camera when the garage monster (cousin to the pond monster) showed up ! Bear30, you would have been proud of Riderduke!:whistling: Took the bike out for a short ride to check things out and everything was AOKAY! Good job guys! Fun time!!!
  18. I know that new bearings on big machinery can get a bit hot, sometimes to the point of boiling the grease, until they wear in. Just wondered about smaller ones, like say car or m/c wheel bearings? My guess is they do to some extent & I bet some of you guys will know for sure. Tony.
  19. Surfing Uhaul for a trailer to haul a golf cart (thanks tax credit!), I came across this. Uhaul rents a small 2 wheel trailer that to me, looks bike-towable. Anyway, just thought I'd share the information. http://www.uhaul.com/trailers/?src=body
  20. ok, question for you folks, i have some ideas, but i also have alot of homework and want to get the opinions of the more educated masses here before i am able to do any testing. i have a rear wheel wobble/clicking it's verticle, as in, it moves up and down rather than side to side the problem occures: in neutral, or gear, regardless of gear. it is not RPM dependant it IS speed dependant (that is to say, it speeds up as i do, and slows down as I do) The rear brake quiets it (that is to say when i hit the brake, it gets softer, or at low speeds quits all together) things i have done recently: replaced the final drive oil with brand new 80w 90 replaced and balanced the rear tire repacked the rear splines (using 60% moly paste) i suspect that when i changed the tires, i warped the rotor a little, and that is why it is speed dependant and not rpm dependant. i would assume the easiest way to test that would be to remove the rear wheel, and run the bike through the gears on a stand with no wheel, no click, must be the wheel. any other suspicious things i should check? any known problems that sound similar? I really appreciate any feedback, guys, thanks!
  21. Hello all, I'm new here - thanks for letting a visitor in to ask a few questions. Lovely first day of spring here in NYC - I began it my picking my 84 Venture up off the ground - it was knocked over in its parking space during the night. http://venturedown.yolasite.com/ (pardon the over exposed photos - cheap camera phone - bright morning light) This wouldn't sting as bad is it does - but there's a brand spanking new battery in there as well as a very fresh oil change. The bike was happy, we were about to go on a nice long ride. Anyways - here's the state of things: Bike in neutral, two wheels on the ground, shift to first - feels like a clutch dump even though the clutch is in. (I bled the clutch right after this just to make sure there was no air in the line.) Bike on centerstand - rear wheel in the air - from neutral it will shift into first with or without the clutch. In first gear (or second) the rear wheel spins. It doesn't stop spinning when the clutch is pulled in. There's also an audible clanging coming from somewhere in the lower rear of the engine while in gear and the wheel is spinning. I'm feeling like the clutch rod has been thrown or broken but I don't know. I've never been in the guts of this bike so I turn to you folks for opinions. I've done rebuilds on various bikes before so am not new with cracking cases and putting humpty back together again. However, at the moment I'm without a garage and tools. A major operation is a near impossibility. I really try to be a motorcycle shop free zone. I lack the money and the trust to deal with the mechanics in my area. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, D. Barn NYC 84 Yamaha Venture (bought in Long Beach, CA - we likes to ride)
  22. My '86 Venture has felt kinda unhappy on the road lately.... as most of you know that is not normal for a Venture. I got home from my ride today and put it up on the center stand and with my wife as a helper I gave the wheels a good shaking. It seems that the rear wheel has play in, I assume, the bearings. My question then is..... is there supposed to be some play? How much? The front wheel seems to have none.... should there be? Are wheel bearings still available from Yamaha ? I will have to also assume that at least the right hand bag and I suppose both mufflers will need to be taken off to remove the rear wheel.... is there a tech link on a "how to ...." for the rear wheel some place here I can refer to? I know from reading others calls for help I will get lots so thank you up front. Kevin
  23. I'd like to know exactly where the centre of gravity is on the 86-93 Venture Royale. Obviously it's slightly forward of the centre stand but I'd like to know exactly. I can do the calculation if someone can just give me the weight on each wheel...no rider, nothing in the bags, full tank of gas. Does anyone have the numbers? (no smart comments, just the numbers, please)
  24. I'm attaching a pic from one of my current shocks on the sidecar, I need to replace/upgrade these puppies so the wheel will not wear a hole in the sidecar floor (this is a leaner with the wheel centered under the rider's rear). As you can see on the attached pic this shock is 13" O.C. +/-. The shock is also agled about 60 degrees so dampening is diminished. I know that getting a longer shock will give me more clearance. So, unless anyone here has a good set they want to part with that would fit my needs, I will be shopping on E-Bay, what can you tell me I should look for so I don't wind up wasting my money on something way too light for my needs? Or would i be better of to just get a new set?
  25. So far I'm really enjoying having the lift adapter; however, I found that even with it, I had to jack the bike up higher in order to remove the rear wheel. Is this the "norm" or am I missing something? If it's the norm, perhaps Carbon One should make the legs longer...???
