  1. I really feel fortunate to be living here in NorCal and the Pacific West with it's balmy 36deg weather. For the rest of the US, except for SoFla, it's brutal out there. Ouch!!! http://vortex.plymouth.edu/uschill.gif
  2. The shuttle is packed and the trailer is loaded. Now to get out of here before the next weather system arrives. Florida, here we come.
  3. Iowa- January 2011 http://f1618.mail.yahoo.com/ya/download?mid=1%5f83581%5fAHbSi2IAAFCjTTc9eAcuKyG2AnU&pid=2&fid=Inbox&inline=1 It's winter in Iowa And the gentle breezes blow, 70 miles per hour at 52 below! Oh, how I love Iowa When the snow's up to your butt; You take a breath of winter air And your nose is frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful, You may think I'm a fool. I could never leave Iowa , Cause I'm frozen to the stool. (hehehe...made you look didn't I?)
  4. With all the foul weather, the old girl is taking a cold weather nap. Started her today and noticed that oil is coming from the shifter stem. I assume there is a bushing of some type???? I have never had a drip from there before. How do I stop the drip??? joe:starz:
  5. Here is my cold weather contribution... Don't know why it showed up so blurry here. http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/13thAFMonterey/NewFromYamaha1.gif Took me a while to make it. Too much time on my hands. I need to get out and ride!!
  6. Was getting cabin fever already here in IL, and with the sun shining, and a toasty 36 degrees out, I got the bike out and rode for about an hour. Heated gloves, toe warmers in my boots, extra layer of leather on and my Shark Evoline in full face mode, I was pretty toasty, although I forgot the face/neck wrap that would have kept away a little of a draft. Still was nice to get out, never saw another bike. Any other cold weather riders out there?
  7. My son is turning 16 this weekend, so he is inheriting the 1999 Jeep Wrangler that I use for bad weather transportation. I am getting my wifes 2004 GMC Sierra for my bad weather vehicle and the wife got... Its a 2011 Camaro SS/RS SS2, manual 6 speed with sunroof and factory Hurst shifter. Not a bad little commuter.
  8. From North of Atlanta to south of Kissimmee and back again. 1009 miles (489 today). Turns out that a big old tour deluxe is the "right tool" for this kind of ride. Great roads, great weather. My new $40 highway pegs were the bomb on the long return ride on 75 today. Pics to follow.
  9. You know the look of New York, all grey and overcased, for the Macy's day Parade. well I guess South Florida is practising for that day. the weather stinks down here. all gloomy and cold. Deffently a soup day:draming:
  10. Brrrr- vrroom! 38 Degrees when I left the house this morning for work. Light overpants, sweatshirt, balaclava, jacket, mittens... Nothing like cold weather riding. It provides all the fun of snowmobiling without the distracting snow-bunnies, hot tubs, cocoa etc.
  11. I wanted to see how effective the electric windshield and the pop out side louvers do in -10C weather Took the scoot for a 50 km ride, I was impressed with the wind protection but 50kms would it max.I was wearing Felt jeans and a Joe Rocket jacket with the inner lining. Most of the wind I noticed was blowing on the pelvic area. I should have wore my ski-doo suit The hands got cold even with my Ski-doo gloves .Im going to get the Suzuki Storm Hand Guards that attach to the handle bars. Now I have to get a Block Heater and Studs onto the tires and Training Wheels
  12. Iowawegian

    UGH!

I just went outside and saw my first snowflake..... 4 days ago the hubby and I were pouring cement in 80 degree weather and now it's snowing. I know I'm whining, but man, it's gonna be a long winter.
  13. Does anyone ever hear of problems starting their Royal Star in cooler weather? I've had this problem for three years now, and it's now starting again. I've put a new battery on, changed the plugs, air filter, brought it to the stealership, nothing helps. It is fine all summer, but as soon as it gets cold at night, I can't start it in the morning. I was thinking maybe something with the choke, but when it finally does fire up it is revving really high, like the choke is working fine. I hooked a lamp onto the engine all night and that seemed to help, but I'd rather solve the problem. This is my favorite time of year to ride and I hate getting stranded at night, fighting the starter. Any ideas?
  14. Planning on riding the bike to Illinois next week (14 - 22). Hoping the weather will hold...being a Texan, not really use to cold weather (yeah, I know...pantywaste). Going through Oklahoma and Missiouri on the way up...Arkansas on the way back. If you see a blue and black...flash your lights!
  15. So here's I am waiting for Brian 'golf&venture' from Seattle to show up and go over his new2him bike before he heads back to the barn. He's been chomping at the bit to get it back home ever since he bougth it 2 months ago. He bought it from a party up in L.Tahoe, and it's been sitting at his daughters in Vacaville between here and SanFrancisco. So what's Mama Weather thinking about doing? Raining. The one weekend that looks like we'll get the first rain of the season. It's gonna be interesting changing out the plugs and syncing the carbs. Hope this stuff misses us..... http://www.cast-aways.com/images/unlucky.jpg
  16. So we've been planning this biking/camping trip since last spring. Bought a trailer, bought all the camping gear we'd need, made our plans and a few reservations, checked the weather forecast, loaded up and headed out Sep 4th early AM. First stop Osoyoos, BC for 3 nights/2 days of camping in one of BC's "hot spots". Booked a spot right next to the lake. Planned to soak up the sun, swimming, rent a sea-doo, go trail riding... blah blah.... and it all went downhill from here. The wind was so bad we could barely pitch our tent. Sand was blowing into everything. We slept overnight and in the morning the wind was still blowing and picking up so down came the tent and we headed out. Rode into Trail and stayed a night in a motel, visited some relatives and headed out the next morning. Weather wasn't too bad up to this point but that would be the last we'd see of the sun and any warmth for the next several days. We were bundled up pretty good to keep warm and dry and rode the Nelson, Balfour ferry, Creston route in cloudy, cool, and some rain ending up in Cranbrook, BC. Original plan was to camp over here for a couple nights but, no such luck as it was still cloudy, a bit of rain, and quite cool so, another night in a motel. Left Cranbrook the next morning and headed north to Radium, thru the park to Banff and on to Calgary. Again, the weather just wasn't with us so into a motel we go and stayed over a couple nights to visit friends. Poured rain the first night and all the next day so we decided to rent a car to get around .... just our crappy luck all they had was a Mustang convertible...oh well lol. Original plan was to ride to Biggar Sask to visit Nina's mom, stopping over at Drumheller but considering the weather forecast, we elected to leave the bike and trailer in Calgary and take the rented car. Due to this added cost, we also shortened our trip there and went straight to biggar, only stopping there for 2 nights, then back to Calgary. For most of that leg of the trip it was cloudy, rainy and quite cool although we did hit a bit of sun on the way back to Calgary and enjoyed riding with the top down on the car (for about an hour). Back in Calgary we stayed another night in the motel and lit out the next morning, heading south to Fort MacLeod and then west towards Cranbrook, ending up in Creston for the night. This had to be the worst part of the trip and probably the worst riding I've ever experienced. From Ft MacLeod onwards thru to Pincher Creek and Coleman, the wind was so bad I could barely keep the bike in my own lane of the highway. At one point we dropped down into a gully and across a bridge and as we were going down the hill, the sign said "Caution - Extreme Wind gusts". Now, I've ridden this route many times and have never hit wind like this and when we crossed that bridge, a gust of wind nearly knocked us right off the road. It was about all I could do to maintain some level of control over the bike.... totally scared the crap out of both of us. Left Creston the next morning and headed for Osoyoos once again, the plan being that if we didn't have some nice weather, we'd just continue on home. If we did, we'd look for a place to camp. Luck was with us as most of that ride was in nice weather. We were finally able to shed some of our several layers of clothing and get back to just jeans and riding jacket. The weather in Osoyoos was great! Mostly sunny and fairly warm so we started looking for a suitable camping spot, finally finding a great little government camp ground (8 camping spots) along side of a lake (Vaseau Lake sp? for those who know the area) and just one spot was left...and it had our name on it. So finally we got to utilize all our camping gear and the weather held out for us for a few days and we got to kick back and relax. We decided to head for home on Thursday (yesterday) as according to the forecast, it would be the last relatively nice day and we didn't want to be riding home in crappy weather. The ride home was great until about an hour away ... then we hit rain and by the time we got to our doorstep, it was coming down pretty good. Since we were so close, we didn't even bother to put our raingear on... just decided to keep on going even if we did get wet. Surprisingly, we barely got wet at all...just a little dampness on our knees and shins. All-in-all it was quite the memorable trip and Nina & I are still married! LOL here's some pics for ya'll to view...(they appear to be in either reverse or random order) http://s393.photobucket.com/albums/pp16/SilvrT/Holidays%202010/
  17. I know you didn't miss me but I'm finally back. I rejoined several months ago but apparently did something wrong. I was so busy at work and travelling that I failed to follow up. I've been in Florida working August and until the end of Sept. Seems I'm missing some real nice riding weather back in Va. Is this true Ben? Are you back yet Ben? Did I miss anything major? BTW. You Florida people can keep this weather. I'm not on my bike and I miss it terribly. Even the dogs I'm training are starting to revolt due to the heat and these dogs will be going to Afghanistan soon.
  18. Has Owen made it back from PIP? Some really crappy weather he has had to endure. Hope he posts something soon.
  19. It's the end of August and usually we're sweating our a$$es off with a 100+ summer heat wave. Woke up this morning to temps in the 50's and rain clouds overhead. Weather man sez it's a cold front out of Alaska and it's going to rain... It's all that damn volcano's fault....
  20. Just rented a house in Snowshoe WV for 5 days with a group of people from all over the North East. We get together every year for a trip. There was 14 of us and the weather was great as was the whole trip. http://s280.photobucket.com/albums/kk180/neiar/NEIAR%20VI%20WV%202010/?albumview=slideshow
  21. Ran 20-50 dino oil in their older motor (79,000 plus) on a first gen. If you have what were the results? The weather is freakin hot down here, I don't think the 10-40 syn is cutting it.
  22. We just returned from a trip from Omaha to the Grotto of the Redemption in IA then up to Okoboji and back. Just shy of a 500 mile trip. Perfect weather!! we spotted two Ventures riding together in Okoboji. Were they anyone on here?
  23. We will be heading out to Ozarks the 1st of July, staying at Mountain View for 3-4 days and then on to Eureka Springs for 3-4 days, then down towards Hot Springs, I will be on the Venture and the wife will be on her VTX 1300, hopefully the weather will be nice, if you see a 05 silver Venture pulling a trailer with a ALF doll on the trunk it will be us.
  24. Guys, I just got back from a 150 mile ride where I tried out a new (to me) cooling product. I bought a Silver Eagle cooling vest. (saw it advertised in Cycle World) Basically you soak it in water and then, when the temps get too high while riding, you put this on UNDER your jacket and it will help keep you cool. Well today after about 50 miles the thermometer on my bike was showing 102F and I was getting pretty warm. Stopped and took the vest out of the trunk, put it on and replaced my jacket. I was immediately a whole lot cooler than I'd been before, and the cooling lasted 'till I was back home. It REALLY made a difference and was well worth the money IMHO. Makes hot weather riding a lot more pleasant, especially when wearing full gear. I'd never tried this type of thing before, but it REALLY helped me, and it is hot and humid here in Kentucky. If you ride ATGATT in hot weather it's worth a shot....
  25. Once we rode 1 hour north of Toronto. The Cold weather settle in And Myself and Four _Paws had to put on our weather jackets Oh Swifty.... Thank you very much for following the speed limit (The Canadian Way)
