  1. I have an 06 RSV that is still under warranty for a few months...The rear shock appears to be leaking now. Is this something that is covered under the warranty?
  2. Just out of curiosity, How often do you need to air up your shocks. Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Never. Mine seem to leak down in about 2 weeks or less, I was wondering if leaking is normal or should I have it checked. Bike is still under warranty.
  3. Ok first the good...built my bracket and harness for the stebel airhorn. Works great and since I had it and the aluminum stock laying around it cost zero dollars. Now the BAD. I attacked the job of splitting the fairing yesterday to find the previous owner had glued the chrome windshield mole on because one of the end tabs was broken. I see no choice but to buy it and it looks like 140 bucks or so! crappy design! Also I see that my windshield retaining strip like some others on here was assembled and the 2 center bolts left out. It's under warranty but with the broken chrome I am sure this will somehow be my fault. The whole thing makes me sick... anyone ever have to have stuff like that handled under warranty? It also looks like there may be some seeping around the rear diff mounting flange. On the plus side... we did go for a 120 mile ride today... I was staring at the tape holding the chrome on the whole time :-( Frank
  4. I know I am putting the cart before the horse but I want to be confident when I go to my dealer with the problem. Usually I do my own repairs but since the RSTD is still under warranty I may take it to them. For a few days now I have been smelling antifreeze from the bike after or during a ride. Not strong but enough to know there is a leak. Today after a 180 mile ride my son was riding the RSTD and shortly before getting home he said the Red Overheating Light came on. We could hear the coolant boiling in the reservoir so it was definitely hot. Initially I was thinking stuck thermostat...which I still think is the cause of the overheating but.... because I could smell the coolant but unable to find a leak I can't help but wonder if possible the water pump is heading south as well. So I am wondering if : 1. I should just go ahead and replace the thermostat my self or let the dealer do all the work. It doesn't look like that much to get to it. 2. Part of the repair would be to drain the coolant. I assume that the replacement coolant would be at the dealers expense under warranty as it would not need to be drained if the thermostat/water pump was not going bad. 3. Now here is a biggie: I would like to have my valves checked. I think the left front cylinder is off a bit as there is a very slight noise and the left side smokes a little bit. Compression on that cylinder is lower than the rest at about 190 lbs, vs about 210 lbs the other 3 cylinders. If they had to tear into the engine anyway how much more should I expect to be charged for them to look at the valves? I know ...lots of questions. Its hard when your brain looks like a cobweb. Thanks, Tom
  5. Can anyone tell me how to contact the Yamaha Warranty Service Rep. As some of you will remember my RSTD ran hot. With some assistance from my friends here we pretty much feel assured that it has a blown head gasket. The bike has been in the shop going on 4 weeks now with very little being done to get it repaired. The 1st week the service manager told me he had couple of big jobs in front of me so it would be the following Tuesday before they could get started. I'm not thrilled buy am okay with that as I know how these shops work. He also tells me until the last few weeks he has never had a RSTD in his shop for repairs which does make me feel better about the quality of the engine. Anyway... Three more weeks have passed and they have yet to diagnosis the problem. Their reasoning is they do not have the proper size fitting for the radiator pressure tester. This is a Yamaha dealer, they should have the proper tools. He says he has been trying to find one but to no avail. I just can't believe that in 3 additional weeks they can not lay hands on something they should have in their service bay. Then after he does diagnose he tells me it will be an additional 2or more weeks for them to get the warranty approval and then order parts and then do the repairs. I think I have been more than patience but that is quickly running out. So how do I light a fire under their backside. Who do I call? I have a call into the manager now but I want to go higher than that. Thanks.
  6. Hey Folks, This is a great sight and I am enjoying it tremendously. I might be one step closer to actually owning my very own venture. I have found a 08 with approx. 12,000 miles. Seems to be well taken care of. I think it still has a year left under warranty. I was wondering what would be a reasonable price for that bike? I don't want to insult the guy with an offer, but at the same time I don't want to spend any more than necessary. Thanks for the help, Melvin
  7. Since Rotella (Blue Bottle)is not specifically labeled for use in motorcycles will using it void the warranty?
  8. In 2007 I bought a new RSV until this time I had'nt any problem. Recently I had a problem whith the fuel pump, it doesn't work anymore ! Could you please confirm Yamaha will honour the 5 years warranty? I'll await your reply as soon as possible before ordering new part at my own cost. Thank you for your time. At the same time, where could I find the entire specifications of this 5 years warranty?
  9. My Battery Tender went on the fritz about a year ago and I only recently got around to sending it back to the manufacturer. The unit I had came with the '83 Venture when I bought it in September 2006, so I have no idea how old it was by then. Long story short: the unit was completely beyond warranty (it was the older version with a 5-year limit), so they called me and said “we'll just send you a new, improved one, with a 10-year warranty, for $45, including shipping”. (I am aware that there are good prices available for this unit online, but this deal still beat the lowest price I could find when you include the delivery expense.) I said OK, they sent it, and now I have it, all within about a week. A very good deal for me + a great product + excellent/considerate Customer Service + prompt turn-around time, which all adds up to an exceptional “Good Vendor” experience! Edited at 2:05 PM on 12/07/10: Sorry, folks, I incorrectly thought that by mentioning "manufacturer" you would realize I was referring to the makers of the Battery Tender products. Deltran Corporation 801 International Speedway Blvd., Deland, Florida 32724 Here's a link to their website: http://batterytender.com/ Habib the Re-Charged
  10. I have a 07 venture that i purchased new in 08, it has 40,000 miles on it and realy like this bike. Problem is that i have already had in the shop twice to fix water getting in the final drive and now the head gaskets are leaking. I know it is under warranty but this has me concerned for the future. Did i get a lemon or are there others with same problems?
  11. egads.. I had my rear shock replaced under warranty last summer and after this long run discovered the dang thing has crapped out.. Comparing it to a couple of other RSV, I stand on the right side of the bike and press down on the rear seat, mine will spring down and up smoothly while the other two have a heck of a lot more resistance to the downward push than mine does.. This is how the tech showed me my shock was dead when he suggested a warranty replacement (a quick test he says).. So though my shock holds air pressure, there is no resistance to it.. and I do not recall ever finding a puddle of oil under the bike nor can I notice any oil dirt on the bottom of the shock.. I ride a lot in the rain, so wonder if that washed a lot of it off? The bike handles the bumps well enough but I noticed lately that the bile wallows in bumpy long curving turns at high speeds.. I can anticipate it and not find it scary though someone not expecting this on their bike might well panic. Anyway, now that the bike is officially out of warranty as of last month (shyte timing huh?) I need to figure out what best to do.. I doubt I'll want to order another whimpy $900 Yamaha shock which will most likely go bunky in a year.. what choices do I have? I'm having my front forks serviced later this month and was contemplating on having a set of progressive springs installed. I have them in my VStar and love the stiffness and lack of nose dive when attack sharp corners or abrupt stopping. It has a nice spring rate.. Has anyone tried these on their RSV yet? Anyhoo... lemme know what you think.. Cheers
  12. I'm getting ready to make some leveling links and got to thinking about the reports of the shock going bad. Has anyone had the links on when it failed? Did Yamaha have any issues covering the shock under warranty? Maybe I should put the stock links back on before sending it to the shop if/when the shock fails?
  13. I keep having a problem with my battery going dead. I rode my bike last thursday and didn't get to ride it this weekend because of the weather. I went out this morning to ride it to work and the battery is dead. A couple of months ago my dealer kept it for 2 weeks and checked everything on the bike and determined the recifier was bad so he replaced it and my battery under warranty. Now it's dead again. Man this is frustrating. I guess I better get back to the dealer as my warranty expires 9/3.
  14. After reading the threads this winter I found mention of an exhaust leak at the Y. I got my bike out of storage yesterday and sure enough I have the same leak on both sides. I am taking my bike to the dealer next week and will ask them to replace the exhaust under warranty. I see a number of members have had the exhaust replaced under warranty. I was wondering if anyone has not been able to get this fixed under warranty? If I can't get this replaced under warranty, I will plug the leaks with JB Weld. I see a few members have gone this route. Does anyone know how the JB Weld fix has held up? Also, what are side effects of having the leak?
  15. When I bought my 2nd gen I rememeber having the warranty transferred but can not find that information now. Is there a web site or number where can find out when my warranty expires?
  16. Nope... this is not about Yamaha.. Many years ago I bought a set of tools from Canadian Tire. They have a line of tools called Mastercraft that come with a lifetime warranty similar to Sear's Craftsman. I particularly like this set because it came in a plastic case with places for all the pieces. (and I got it on sale at 1/2 price) So about 4 years ago I lost an adapter inside the fender of a car at a wreckers. I went to Canadian Tire and asked to purchase a replacement. They ordered it and a few days later called me to tell me it was in. When I went to get it they just handed it to me and said "have a nice day" --- no charge.. I was flabbergasted... This was NOT broken this was LOST.. no fault of theirs.. I was totally prepared to buy a new piece to fill the hole in the case. Anyhow I thought someone made a mistake but didn't argue. Fast forward to last week. At some point this case popped open in our old van (kids had borrowed the van) and 4 pieces went missing. Last week I was using the tools and was bugged by the empty places to wandered over to Canadian Tire to order those tools. Got a call on Friday that the parts were in. Went on Sunday to get them... They handed me a baggie with the four tools in it... "have a nice day" Now I expect them to replace a socket or ratchet that brakes.. After all it is a lifetime warranty. I DO NOT expect them to replace something I LOST.. but they did both times.. I'M IMPRESSED!!!
  17. Hi all, I have a 2005 RSV that started leaking oil from the right exhaust pipe today. It's been sluggish on occasion until the bike gets warmed up. Today it seemed extra sluggish and doggy starting from a stop sign. I parked it in the garage, went in the house for a half hour or so and came out to see a 4" by 2" puddle of oil on the floor underneath the right pipe. Any ideas on what it could be? I'm under warranty until 2/2011. I use Rotella synthetic and purolator pure one filter. Will these cause me any issues for warranty work if I bring it in? Thanks
  18. My trunk lid (where the passenger backrest attaches to the lid) has significant cracking around all of the mounting bolts. The cracks have now progressed to the point where they are visible from the outside of the trunk lid. The cracks are in excess of 2"...so I don't believe a "repair" is an option. Probably will have to replace the lid to maintain the integrity and safety of the backrest. Should this be covered under warranty? If it IS repaired under warranty, any ideas on how I can prevent this in the future?
  19. With all the great knowledge on this site, I am sure some one here can answer my question. The clutch pulley gave out on my truck's AC compressor. With 278,000 miles on the original compressor, I figure better to just replace the compressor rather than put a new clutch pulley on. Warranty info on all the comps. I have looked at say that the accumulator and/or drier has to be replaced also. Up until the pulley gave out, the system blew nice and cold. Aside from warranty issue on the remaned compressor, will the system be compromised and likely to fail if I do not replace the other part(s)?
  20. Just wanted to share a very positive experience I recently had with DOWCO, Inc. For over five years I've been using the Guardian EZ-Zip Motorcycle Cover to cover my RSV when we spend nights away from the garage. Well, a couple of weeks ago the zipper on the storage bag broke apart at the seam. I know that the cover has a lifetime warranty, but didn't think it would cover the bag. I went on their website to purchase a new storage bag, but did not see it for sale as a separate item. Using their contact form, I asked how I could purchase a replacement storage bag.... their reply: A free replacement is on it's way via US Mail. Three days later I had the new bag. The cover is high quality and has done a great job through years of service and looks none worse for the wear. The zippered rear really makes covering and uncovering the RSV an easy task. If I'm ever in the market for a new cover (unlikely, given the lifetime warranty) I would definitely check out DOWCO, Inc. They stand behind their quality products. http://www.dowcopowersports.com/products/motorcycle_covers/index.cfm I have no financial or other interest in this company... just sharing a story of good customer service.
  21. Lots of members have used, out of warranty Garmins, called their support and gotten free replacements. I took a chance based on this w/ a Streetpilot 2730 on e-bay in that the remote works (if you hold it less than an inch from it), but the touchscreen doesn't. I called their tech support and tried a couple things. Nothing worked. All they said was because it is a discontinued model and out of warranty I would have to pay $170 up front. I can ship it to them and if they can't fix it then they can choose to send me a refurb. Not what I was hoping to hear.
  22. Took my bike to Tallahassee Powersports for the 48,000 mile service. Before taking bike to dealer I read the post about cracked tabs in the fairing that hold the windshield on. I have two cracked tabs. I printed the post on here about the cracked tabs and took it with me to the dealer. Dealer just called and said yamaha is going to replace my fairing under warranty but don't know how long it will take to get fairing as it is on back order. Even though it is backordered I am happy. I just knew they were going to call and tell me yamaha wouldn't replace the fairing. I have read many times where dealers and yamaha wouldn't replace items under warranty but I have to say, yamaha has always been good to me. My warranty expires in september so I better get everything I need before then.
  23. :bawling: She ran fine on the way to work Wednesday, but when I left she was running like crap. Found the number 3 cylinder has no spark. Probably lost a coil. Took it to the shop in FDL tonight after work. They said they'll check it out right away and get parts ordered and should have it back sometime next week. While they're at it, I told them about the back shock not dampening much anymore. Hopefully we'll get that covered too. Not too bad though. 64,360 miles in 4 and a half years and this is the first warranty work she's needed. While she's in there, I'm going to pay them $250 to do the valve adjustment. Hopefully she'll be good to go for the rest of the summer. Later, Scooter Bob NOT
  24. While in the process of looking for a good deal on some new tires I discovered a warranty killer at least for Dunlop. It states in its warranty exclusions the following: Tires used on motorcycles fitted with trailers. Tires injected with dry/liquid balancers or sealants, or in which anything other than air has been used as the support medium. I am assuming this warranty exclusion is referring to the balancing beads and/or any leak preventing sealer? I looked on the Michelin website for similiar exclusion but did not find any. However, the Michelin tire care section is still under construction so it may be in the fine print too. You can see the entire list of Dunlop warranty exclusions at the link below. http://www.dunlopmotorcycle.com/infocenter_warranties.asp
  25. I know there were some earlier posts on this subject, but here is my story. I bought a 2007 RSV from Dreyer Honda in Indianapolis. I'm the 2nd owner, it was sold new in Illinois. For those of you who don't know, Dreyer has a Yamaha dealership right next door to the Honda store. I asked the service guys at Dreyer Yamaha to transfer the warranty and they said it was something they would take care of if/when it came in for service, otherwise it was not necessary. The handbook says it should be transferred. I'm thinking "what if I'm in Ohio or Kentucky or some foreign land (Canada?) and need warranty work?". I want to be recognized as the owner and warranty holder. So-o-o I went to Westfield Yamaha, they told me it HAS to be transferred by the original selling dealership. IN ILLINOIS! No ifs, ands, or buts. Just flat refused to have anything to do with it. I emailed the dealer in Illinois, they responded that they would be glad to help, but would have to physically inspect the bike. Well-l-l let me tell ya- I called Yamaha Motors in Katella, CA. The customer service rep. (Leona) there was GREAT! She called Indy Cycle & Ski while keeping me on the line. Before Leona and I finished talking I had a call come in from Indy Cycle & Ski from their business manager James White. I took a ride to their dealership and when I got there I was greeted by James. He provided me with a temporary warranty, told me I would be getting a warranty card from Yamaha, and then took me around and introduced me to the service mgr. and the parts mgr. and showed me around the dealership. Then I spent some time on the showroom floor just browsing. Bear in mind that this was my first ever visit to this dealer. When I need service, tires, parts, whatever, guess where I am going first? All this just to confirm what most of us already know. There are dealers out there that just don't give a damn, but if you are lucky you may find one that gives you old fashioned "we value you as a customer" service. Mel:Venture:
