  1. Hi new to your site and am looking for some information from the experts here. I am going to look at a 1987 Venture Royal on Sunday and hoped that someone would be kind enough to tell me what some of the known issues or problems are related to that model. Any help is appreciated........
  2. I guess that it is called a fender badge also, I would like to get one. Anyone have one for sale or know of a place that still sells them. Orlin
  3. I was looking for a replacement left side fairing mirror for an 85 venture. 50 or 60 bucks on ebay sounds like a lot of $$$. I see some of the goldwing aftermarket mirrors on bikebandit ($10) look awfully close. Has anyone ever tried mating one to the Venture?
  4. Came across an '87 Venture, and I'm toying with the idea of buying it. I would fix it up and then do a cross country trip. My last such trip was in '04 on an '02 Concours. - Is this an OK year for the Venture? - I'm OK with cleaning carbs, etc, but what else should I look out for? - Is 2nd gear a hazard on the 87 model? - Whats an OK price for an average '87 that's been sitting for a few years? - Are tires, parts, and so on reasonably available? Thanks!
  5. I am a first time venture owner. I just bought an 87 venture royale. I absolutely love it so far. I thought this site was very cool when I found it. Its great to be a part of this. Now, down to business, I hope you guys can help me. My bike needs some work before I can get it out for a few rides before snow flies. The air compressor has a bad solenoid. The rear shock won't fill up. Is this repairable? The temp gauge on the dash is not working, it stays at cold. Any common problems? Where is the sensor? What I believe is the low brake fluid in the front master cylinder warning light is on. The front is full. Common problems, where's the sensor? No glass in the rear. How full do I fill the rear? And not so pressing, I'm going to remove the cassette player, I will be putting in a mp3 jack, but I'm looking for more ideas of what to do with that space. Any information would be great, thank you
  6. will a 155/80/15 work trying to find 165/80/15 is just about impossible to find and am trying to find it local as in 250 mi local for the 99 RSTD the 84 venture will never see a ct dont want to order online if i dont have too is why im asking
  7. For those who know, why does the '88 have less advertised power than the '83? The '88 has a bigger bore, and slightly bigger carb, and a little more torque, but the rest seems the same, yet the '88 is advertised with 11PS less power? What would account for this difference? Just askin'.... -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Venture
  8. In a previous post, I mentioned getting a free one day rental from Appleton HD. The ride was taken last weekend and greatly enjoyed. I am starting this as a new thread since the topic has changed from 'what should I do with a free day of riding an HD' to 'What I did with a free day of riding an HD'. Also, want to provide my review of the HD as compared to the Venture. To begin with, let's review the dealer (Appleton HD). They are great. The sales folks on the floor were very knowledgeable of their product. There were a couple of esoteric questions they didn't know (fusing on the cig lighter - in case I needed to use my road compressor), but mostly, they knew their stuff. Their recommendation on a bike to take was also right on. Very impressive dealer. After looking at the selections (all the big bikes were available) and listening to their expertise, I chose a Road Glide Ultra. This is the same as the Ultra Classic but with a frame mounted fairing instead of a fork mounted fairing. The RG fairing was also about 8" further forward providing a much larger, less cramped feeling, riding compartment. Very nice. The RGU had all the bells and whistles. Radio, CB, Ipod interface - What?? No cassette??? ABS front and rear, 6 speed tranny, 103 ci of bone rattling power. The bike provided was totally stock. Rode the Venture up to pick up the bike Saturday at 11:00ish. They advised to just bring it back when I was done - even if it was after hours Sunday. Just drop the key thru the slot. Cool. Interestingly, parked next to a '90 blue Venture when I pulled in. Anyhoo, after the appropriate paperwork, they took me out to the bike and gave me an introduction - how everything works. I packed a change of clothing and various stuff in the cavernous saddle bags, threw on my helmet, plugged in my headset (yes, the plug is the same as the Venture), and took off. The Venture was resting comfortably under their overhang under the watchful eyes of a security camera. Really a nice setup. Wanted to get my money's worth out of this free rental, so I took off for BBQ. Original destination was Kansas City, MO. Unfortunately, a series of items prevented me from making it that far in time to beat closing at Arthur Bryant's BBQ. First - It wasn't an hour before I started squirming on the stock seat. Was also getting the little pain between the shoulder blades that is indicative of handle bars that don't pull back far enough. Couldn't ride more than about 100-125 miles before needing to stop and stretch. Frustrating. Added the Airhawk to the seat and that helped some. Also added the sheepskin and the seat/butt issue was mostly resolved. Nothing I could do about the back pain. Also, there were no highway pegs so not much room to move around the legs. Second - My 6 year old Zumo 550 battery quickly ran out of juice. It is never run without a hard wired power source, so I'm sure the battery is pretty much toast. So, I plugged in the charger to the cig lighter (had a cig lighter to USB converter). Unfortunately, you can't operate the Zumo and change it in this way at the same time. Oh well, I know where I am going - at least up to hitting KC. So I thought. Missed the split to HWY 151 from Hwy 61 south of Dubuque, IA. Therefore, added about 60 miles by detouring thru Davenport. That combined with having to stop too often meant KC wasn't going to happen. However, all was not lost. I found an amazing BBQ joint in Des Moines, IA. SmokeyD's BBQ (http://www.smokeydsbbq.com). They have won an impressive number of contests both locally and nationally. And it tasted like it. Had a combo of pulled pork and brisket and they were both amazing - especially the brisket. I WILL go there again. Found a cheap hotel just outside of Des Moines since I was not in any hurry to get back. Was on the road at about 7:15 Sunday morning under a clear sunny sky and about 45 degrees. Beautiful weather. Took the missed 151 back to Dubuque, crossed into Wisconsin, and then proceeded to head up the Great River Road. I figured there was enough experience on the slab, need to see how it works in some curves. Stopped at Dewey Nelson State Park just north of Cassville and took some pictures. Road along the WI River on Hwy 60 all the way to Columbus. Stopped in Fox Lake to show the bike to Scooter Bob, stopped by the house to show the bike to my boys, and then headed back to Appleton. Had to run past about 15 miles to get the mileage over 1000. All in all, a great weekend was had. The next installments will have pictures and an evaluation/comparison. RR
  9. Attached are PDF scans of a 1986 Venture Service Guide for Technical Training. I got a copy of this on Ebay. A lot of info on the Anti Dives, CB radio, Cruise Control There are quite a few interesting tidbits in the information contained in this material. I broke the scans up by sections so I could get them uploaded. Same format as the 1987 Venture Service Handbook for Technical Training I loaded a few months ago. Link to that thread next. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/sh...ad.php?t=71406 Gary
  10. We are going to Janesville WI, to pick a 1992 Blue Venture today, sure hope that this ends up being a better one than the one I got three weeks ago, that was doctored up with stop leak. Looks from the pics to be in very nice shape everything is there still has the cargo bags . All of the plastic is is good shape. The PO said its been a very good cycle and that he doesnt ride much anymore and wanted to get his daughter a nice scooter to cruze around town on. I will get some pics on here when I get it home and all cleaned up. Orlin
  11. Hi All, I have bought a 2004 Venture. I previously had Royal Start Boulevard. Here is some finding which I need to fix. Engine is knocking after replacing original oil and oil filter. Wobbles at pot holes or humps. I did correct the tire pressure too. Any Help will be appreciated. Will check for more and keep you all posted.
  12. It's killing me to think about doing another engine swap into my 83/86 Venture Frankenbike. And I'm very ticked off to not be riding the rest of the season. I still may try to get another 86-93ish engine, or another 86-93ish Venture, ride it for a couple more months, and do an engine and plastic swap. But it's stressing the crap out of me. I've read a LOT of adventure rider riding reports the past 2.5 years, and it really intrigues me to be able to go odd pavement on a lighter bike. I've looked at a new Honda NC700 and a Suzuki 650 Vstrom and I'm approved for either one. My wife isn't on the wagon. I'm more interested in the Vstrom. I may try to look at used Vstroms depending on if I can get financing. I'm very interested in the high gas mileage (65mpg); that would pay for over 50% of the payment (new one), increasing my monthly $ commitments about $100/month, and I wouldn't have to touch it mechanically for a lot of years other than normal maintenance. Tomorrow I'm going to go to the credit union and see what Kind of financing I can get for different options. If I do go the adventure rider bike route I will just part out all of my Venture stuff. Sucks that I barely spent almost $200 for a new rear tire. I'm just getting VERY sick of life's curve balls. Doug
  13. Just a thought but with so many sightings of ventures lately an idea came to me this morning. Would it be possible to design/produce decal(s) for our Organization that could be placed in designated locations on the front fairing and rear trunk that would both advertize to others and identify a current Venture rider? maybe include our CB channel? Under this one could always place their Username? Or has someone already thought of this?
  14. Got my 1990 Venture home today. It will need some tlc, tires, battery, the normal stuff. It also has a leak at the thermostat housing. Why would this leak? One of the worst things is the handling. It has a Dunlop CruiseMax on the front, and an Elite on the rear. When coming to a stop, the whole front end shudders like it has an octagonal shaped tire or something. Whole bike feels just generally wobbly and mushy. A cursory inspection reveals a few loose bolts. So I think I'm gonna strip off the bodywork and tighten EVERYTHING. And maybe some solid or urethane motor mounts. Combing through the forums looking for a plan of attack. Otherwise, I think the Venture and I are going to make lots of memories.
  15. Same thing, different color. http://www.starmotorcycles.com/star/products/modelhome/586/0/home.aspx
  16. the vac pump for cruise control on the 1300 venture royal will it work on the 1200 venture i found it on ebay no year given
  17. SO what would you pay for a new venture with FI, ABS, Aluminum frame, Full fairing, bags trunk, radio, intercom, bluetooth, etc. This assumes most peoples desire for the Venture to remain a full on luxo tourer similar to HD, WING and BWW. While you can choose more than one option, try and keep your selections consistent. For instance if you are not going to buy till your current bike dies or you are waiting to buy used, don't select what you pay for a new one, since technically you wouldn't buy a new one. If you are providing info in a post like I would pay the samee as brand X model, provide what that bike costs so we don't all have to guess and look it up. Thanks RSTDdog
  18. Does anyone know of a manufacturer or vendor that makes chrome neck covers to fit a 2006 Royal Star Venture?
  19. Looking for the PO of the 87 Blond Venture traded at Don and Roys Motor Sports Brookfield Wi. Has anyone else did buisness with this place are they honest, I would like to find out the history on this cycle they told me it was a one owner. Thanks Orlin
  20. Will the stator from a 99 or 03 Royale Star Venture fit a 90 Venture Royale? What years and models are interchangeable with the 90?
  21. I know its been done before...but I'm having issues! I should be getting all kinds of hits with this search.... I do get 3500 or so if I look at all types....but if I look at "auction" it drops to 20! There must be several thousand ads out there! Can someone correct what is wrong with this search? It should be looking for any ads with the quoted words, minus all the others. ???????????????????????? "Yamaha Venture", "Venture Royale", "Venture Royal" -gt -700 -1993 -1994 -1995 -1996 -1997 -1998 -1999 -2000 -2001 -2002 -2003 -2004 -2005 -2006 -2007 -2008 -2009 -2010 -2011 -2012 -rsv -600 -snow -star -enticer -blaster -600cc -480cc -wave -viper -vector -xenon -phazer -mountain -exciter -snow* -srx -venom -vt600 -vt480 -vt700 -sxr -carbide -Montana -Aprilla -Chevrolet -Pontiac -Chevy -Aprilia I want to see what stuff is going for before I part out the 84 parts bike. Taking offers now!
  22. Is anyone here using the IMC helmetless headsets? I really like wearing a half helmet the majority of the time, and this headset looks like what I've been wanting. I had the JM/Yamaha sets with the '04 Venture, but sold them a little over a month ago before I knew I was going to get another Venture. In fact, the guy I sold them to is how I found out about the '99. I've been scouring the 'net tonite looking at them on several sites and most reviews lean towards using a mic mute, which the previous owner had installed. I'd be willing to give up a little of the audio quality to have the helmet flexibility. The wife and I have been talking, and she kinda wants to go back with what she had since she only wears an open-face. Any experience/info, good or bad, is appreciated. Also, does anyone have a '99-'00 style cb antenna? The chrome threaded "cup" that unscrews and lets them fold over was seized up on both. I got the radio antenna freed up, but the little hinge connector inside the cb twisted and broke. I'll probably never use the cb, but I would like to be able to fold both antennas down to cover it up.
  23. Won't be long until we find out what happens with the venture. Usually around September 8.
  24. Anybody ever drop one of these bad boys? I've dropped mine twice and was unable to pick it up myself either time. No damage done, fell over on the bars, but still a bit embarassing. Once on a gravel driveway(turned into newly resurfaced drive) and once in my driveway. I have a 1988 Venture Royale, not sure if it makes a difference. Anybody out there have any tricks or the secret to getting this thing back up when you're alone? Thanks Ed
