  1. Woody

    Near hit

I may need to get my seat fixed, while riding two up with my daughter on a narrow country road we meet a white pick up truck coming in our direction driving very slow as if looking for an address or something and then from behind the truck a red truck came around a curve way to fast and could not stop for the white truck it took to the ditch on the right side of the white truck and passed it in the ditch came back in the road in front of the truck with it’s front wheels off the ground coming straight at us I took the ditch on my right avoiding the red truck a mail box and then the white truck. After my daughter was able to talk she said at one point she could have touched the red truck and the mail box at the same time. If we had been in four wheels we could not have got out of the way. Good thing is no one was hurt, bike got a couple of scraps.
  2. I just did everything possible that I can think of to bring winter back. I got the bike cleaned up and running. I put all of the snow shovels away. I took the snow brush and ice scraper out of the truck. Started taking down the storm windows and putting up the screens. I don't know what else I can do to bring back winter???
  3. I seen a pole on the age of technicians and was amazed that most of us 68% have been at it for 30 Plus years and less then 15 % have been doing it 20 years or less. Where is the pool of technicians for the future going to come from. How many of you make your living working on Car, Truck, Bus, Motorcycle, and Boat? How many are ASE certified? How many work at a dealership? How many work at independent shop? How many work for the government? And how long? I would just like to know. Me I am a School bus technicians ASE Master Auto, Truck, Bus, L1, L2 10 years Cadillac 8 years custom car building 12 years fleet on large trucks and buses
  4. Well last night I decided I wanted an electric fireplace. I don't have a heating system anymore here and it's been getting rough with the little electric ones I have at night. So I bought it and I'd have to pick it up in Suffolk at the Lowes. That was the closest one that still had any. So I leave after chatting with the muffinman and head up. Get the thing in the truck (took 3 guys to pick it up and put it in). Now I'm thinking wow I'm alone how am I gonna get this thing out of the truck. Being constructive I figured I get to that when I got home. So I get home pull the truck up to the porch and shove the box out of the bed onto the porch. So far so good. Now how do I get it in the house? Well I tried a few things and realized I wasn't getting the box in the house. I had even thought of hooking the dog up to it. Only problem would be getting it up off the porch into the door. Also the box was looking a bit wide to go through the door. So I decided go ahead and open the thing outside and get the parts in. Have you ever seen those industrial staples they use on these boxes. There's a line two each all the way across. Finally I get it open sort of then I got all this tape to get through. Once it's open it's way easier to get the parts out. There a bit heavy but way lighter then together in that box. Oh yeah the weight was about 104 I weigh just a little more then that. So now I got all these parts in the house to put together. I'll let you know how that goes. I'm thinking it's gotta be easier then getting it in the house was. Oh the fireplace is pretty big too. It's 42" high, 48.3" wide, and 14.5" deep. Now I gotta figure out where to put this thing. Guess I'll worry about that after I get it together. Margaret
  5. A deer with the company van. The roads are snow covered and I could not miss it.Thats 2 since New Years. Tonight I'm driving my truck to get Ramona. I'm going to try my best to hit one. Maybe I will miss it. Trying to avoid them doesn't work.
  6. I want to share a very close call I had as a reminder of the importance of getting past these transport trucks and not riding beside them. I always lag behind a truck for a bit then gun it to get past them very quickly so as not to be in there blind spot for long. Well, as I was passing this transport I was doing as I always do when a tire blew out from the truck. For what ever reason I had already moved further over to the left then I normally do. The tire literally exploaded forward, sideways and to the rear of the truck. I was fortunate enough to see the debris and swerve back towards the truck to fit inbetween the debris as I acceleated even faster to fit through the open air that I saw. Rubber went infront of my bike and just behind it. I was very lucky that I didn't slow down or I would have been knocked off my bike. I was lucky who knows what is best to do, slow down or speed up, it all depends on the circumstance. In any case I just wanted to air this to remind everyone to pay special attention and get as far away from the trucks when you are passing them. I'm going back on the highway this afternoon and riding to Niagara on the Lake for the night and I have to say I may not be passing too many trucks.
  7. I hit a deer tonight on my way to pick Ramona up from work. The good news is since my brakes are out I hit it with Ramona's truck. The bad news is I hit it with Ramona's truck. I just can't win.
  8. On 12/22/09 my friend Garry Brown died in a motorcycle accident. Somehow he went into the opposing lane on a curve and hit a cement truck head on. We don't know why, it was just a tragic accident. The bike and truck burst into flames. The truck driver is ok. Garry was 61 and a prospect member of the Alamo City Gypsy MC. Below is a picture of Garry as Santa just a few days before on the Elf Louise toy run. JB
  9. Sure would be nice if someone could build a wedge to fit between the top and bottom of the truck to give an extra 1 1/2 to 2" of clearence. Make it semi-permanent ,put a light or reflecter on it . Of course you would have to extend the truck latch. Whatcha think? I got a big helmet for my big head and I like to keep it locked up.It fits but not so good. Why can't the antennas be incorporated into some metal acessories that look good like bag gaurds or a truck rack? When I stay awake to long things sometimes make sense until I sleep on them. Feel free to shot em down . Idea men don't spell so good either , but I see we got alot of those here so I feel right at home and let em fly. We don't need no stinkin spellcheck.
  10. I am thinking about heading down towards West Virginia to try to make some extra cash before Christmas and seeing how we do not have enough snow in the Detroit area I am willing to go south. Anyone have too much and need it moved. :snow::snow:
  11. We had this guy that worked with us that was just crazy, he'd go out and drink and just do crazy stuff. Almost every weekend he would come in on Monday with another crazy story. He actually was at a party once and driving his truck and sitting in the window and trying to steer while another friend operated the gas, he actually ran him self over. He fell out of the truck and it went over him. He was pretty boogered up for awhile but eventually was right back at the parties and doing similer stuff. This spring he got himself an old harley, I dont know what it was even tho he came to work a week ago and I talked to him about bikes and work for a half hour or so. I worried about him having a bike but said he was drinking less and knew they were dangerous. I got a call tonight from a mutual friend that told me he was at a party last night and died on his way home. He leaves behind a young wife and 2 small children, So sad and so hard to get these young people to understand how short life is and how fast we can make a mistake and end it.
  12. The one that belonged to a buddy of mine, had sat in his garage for 9 years with only 1700 miles? I sold it to a young man in Cincinnati and have kept up with him since the sale. I'm sure most of you are similar in that something you worked on and spent a lot of time to make it as perfect as possible,, well it becomes part of your life, part of your sack full of life experiences. I received an email from him last night, and I knew from the title that it was not going to be good at the end of the story. The RSTD was ran over by a motorist, Ned( the owner) was standing beside bike. Any way here is the story he sent me; So last Saturday while I was at work my little brother showed up and told me that my Dad and him were trying to get ahold of me but I wasn't answering my phone. He told me that my Dad's bike had broken down and that he was stranded on the side of River Road about 10 mins. from where we were currently at. I decided to try and get a truck with ramps so we could at least get his bike off of the road. In the process of setting this up he called at stated that my Aunt was going to bring her truck with a ramp and my grandpa to help get it loaded up. I figured this was no big deal and just told my brother to go back and help, and to call me if they needed anything else. About fifteen mins later I received a call from my Dad asking me where my brother was, I told him that he had left me about fifteen mins ago and that he should have been back to him by now. We were both a little worried and decided to give him five more mins to show up or else I would drive back down River Road to make sure he wasn't broken down too. Needless to say, he did not show up to my dad so I left to check and see if I could find him. I made it about seven miles on my motorcycle when I noticed my gas light was on and decided to fill up now jusr in case i had to make another trip back to look for my brother. I then caled my Dad back and he stated that he had just got off the phone with my bother and he was at home because he didn't see dad and figured my aunt had already picked him up. He couldn't call to check because he was on his motorcycle and his phone was dead on top of that, so he just went home. I then decided to go ahead and meet up with my Dad to help him load his bike into the back of the truck. I went the remaining mile down the road and saw my Aunt's truck with the hazzard lights flashing and I pulled over to help. We pulled the ramp out of the bed of the truck and we quickly realized that the ramp was way to steep and narrow to push the bike up. We decided to go and get a small trailer instead, and her and my dad started to close the tailgate of the truck. At this time I turned around to go get my cell phone out of my saddle bag and I saw headlights coming down the emergency lane. I figured it was another family member or even a cop stopping to help us out however, I noticed that the car was coming way to fast. Next thing I know the car smashed into my motorcycle which was about 50 or 60 ft away from the truck at what I could guess to be about 50 MPH. My bike was thrown towards me and i jumped out of the way and into the road just in time to miss being hit by the car, i screamed for my family to look out as all of this was happening. All I heard was crushing metal and glass breaking and a loud bang which I assume was the car hitting my Dad's bike, then another bang as I turned my head. I got turned around just in time to see the car smash into the back of my Aunt's truck. I figured that with everything happening in such a violent and fast manner that the worst thing had just hapened and that I was going to find my family crushed between the truck and car. I ran towards the truck and car screaming for a response from somebody and was hearing nothing, as I got around the car i saw my Dad getting himself off the ground and limping really bad. I then heard my Aunt yell and saw my Grandpa coming over the gaurd rail. A passerby stopped as we were dialing 911 and ststed that they saw the whole thing and were on with emergency services as well. The next few mins are kinda of jumbled up with nothing much more than yelling, and screaming about what the hell just happened and making sure everyone was ok, the cops and EMT's started showing up. While talking to my Dad he stated that he had heard me yell and that he immediately knew what was going on withou exlanation, and turned around just in time to see mine and his bike hit him in the thigh knocking him under the truck. The truck was then hit and he was no longer under the truck as it went forward about 15ft after impact. He receved about a 1.5 in gash on his shin that needed - stitches and a bruised up thigh. My Aunt was struck in the same fashion by the motorcycles but more in the knee and received minor cuts and bruises on her feet and legs from all of the glass. My Grandpa and I were unharmed, just extremely shook up as well. But wait, there is more! The old man who just smashed into us had broken out of a hospital he was commited to for dimentia, and stole the car that he just smashed us with. How could I make that up? The guy never even hit the breaks. Today we went to look at the damage and realized that my dad and aunt missed being crushed by the bikes and the car by a space that is about 2 ft wide. Call it divine intervention or whatever you want but somehow the car was defelcted to the drivers side of the truck's rear bumper and the bikes hit the extreme passanger side of the rear bumper. Leaving a small gap of safe area for my dad and aunt to be in to avoid almost certain death. Needless to say, both bikes are totaled, and my Aunt has 5000 worth of damages to her truck. I cannot accurately describe how fast this happened other than in the blink of an eye,or the shear confusion that took place in the few mins after. But, I can tell you that it is nothing short of a MIRACLE that everyone walked away with their lives. Everything happened in just the right way to save everyones lives and for that you can do nothing else but THANK GOD! http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/Neda.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/Nedb.jpghttp://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i301/Bob_Myers/Nedd.jpg
  13. I've got a question for the firefighters. What type of fire do you use a 105 ft ladder truck on? Our local volunteer fire department spent over $750,000 on a truck similar to the one pictured here and the chief has stated that it is too big to go down many of the county roads in the district and on others it shouldn't be driven more than 30 mph. It seems to me that this type of apparatus is better suited for urban areas with high-rise buildings. Not rural developments where the houses or buildings are more than 100' from the road. Does this make sense or am I missing something? DT
  14. After careful consideration and waiting for the 2010 venture I have bought a new to me toy. 2007 wing with EFI. It sure dose have a lot of buttons though! On the way home while trying to find the auto wave button I may have accidently launched the space shuttle. I still intend to hang out here cause I still have the 84 and I think it will still make a good service truck. ( That would be a shift cover from a 5 ton truck this spring ). Besides you guys make me laugh, and after looking at my bank balance, I need a good laugh!
  15. I was riding Saturday and came up behind a group of guys on bikes, mostly harleys, they were running a little slower than I was but not enough for me to pass the on a 2 lane. So I just rode along behind, and began to notice how they rode, sitting straight up, heads held up chin up, first thought was these guys ride with good posture. So I straighten up out my normal slouchy postion, but then as we went through intersections they looked straight ahead not really looking at the cars coming up to the intersections. At one crossroads a pickup appeared that he was not going to stop, he actually had to slam on brakes and slide to a stop, not one of the 7 bikes in frount of me made any adjustment or preperations to avoid the truck. last bike on the right missed the frount bumper of the truck on a few inches, I had allready moved left and slowed to be ready if he came out. But the others rode on as if they never saw him. This is way many bikers get hurt, they ride like they own the road, yes we had the right-of-way, but he was in a 3/4 ton four wheel drive. I thought of RANDYA's signs off, Ride as if you are invisible not invincible words to stay alive by. thanks RandyA and mine now, You might have the right-of-way, but ride like you don't. Gregg

  18. So there has been some discussion on and off and I have a question that I would like to ask the truck drivers out there (since I know we've got a few in here). If you have EVER driven a semi or are currently driving it does not matter to me either way. I have a few over the road drivers in my family and we have had discussions about this particular topic from time to time. Only one of them does not want anything to do with motorcycles and his opinion is the same as the others. My question is: When you are on the highway in your truck how do you prefer to be passed by a motorcycle? (lane position, speed, etc.) Thanks in advance for the input!
  19. http://blogs.carpoint.ca/2009/08/texting-tow-truck-twit-splashes-down-in-pool.html Typically, a tow truck is called in to cart off the vehicular casualties of an accident. Alas, such was not the case recently when a Lockport, N.Y. area tow truck driver needed to get his rig towed – out of a private swimming pool. Worse, it was the tow truck’s mindless behaviour that caused the accident. Authorities identified the driver of the tow truck as Nicolas Sparks, an employee of Adams Towing. According to reports, the tow truck was traveling down Tonawanda Creek Road when it struck a car at an intersection in Lockport near a residential area. Sparks rear-ended the back of a car, causing the vehicle to swerve out of control. The car slid into a nearby trench prior to crashing through a resident’s backyard fence. Meanwhile, the car and motorcycle that Sparks was towing on the back of his truck flew off, obliterating a residential air conditioning unit and the gas lines of a house. But Sparks wasn’t quite done yet. After damaging the structural integrity of a house and smashing through a backyard fence, the tow truck finally came to a soggy stop after it plunged into a backyard swimming pool. Luckily, nobody was taking a dip at the time. Hey, accidents happen. But in addition to dangerously tailgating the vehicle in front of him, police confirm that just prior to the mishap Sparks had been talking on his cell phone and text-messaging simultaneously. (The phone has been confiscated by police to investigate the call history.) It would all make for a comedy of errors except for the fact that the woman driving the car had to be transported to Erie County Medical Center via trauma helicopter for serious injuries. Her passenger, an eight-year-old girl, was taken to Women and Children’s Hospital for her injuries. The car was a write-off. As for Mr. Sparks – the newest poster boy for distracted driving insanity – he’s been charged with reckless endangerment and tailgating.
  20. All eyes on our Allies 07/22/2009 FERGUS, Ont. -- When the pedal-to-the-metal crowd meets the pedal-steel-guitar crowd in this central Ontario town for the annual Fergus Truck show this week, they’ll get a chance to see a platoon of some of the prettiest iron on the continent. The Show ‘n’ Shine event is always a big draw. But this year, one truck in particular is guaranteed to bring tears to even the most jaded of eyes. It’s a 2010 Volvo VN 670 with a 485-hp D 13 Volvo engine, I-shift automatic transmission, fully tricked out sleeper berth, aluminum wheels, full fairings and everything else an owner-operator might want in a truck. (Just thinking about it makes you kinda emotional, don’t it?) http://todaystrucking.com/images/usr_220709124206_Ally02.jpg But here’s the thing: Every year, Volvo employees in the New River Valley Plant in Virginia trick out one rig for use in the Memorial and D-Day parades Stateside, and this year, they borrowed this 670 from Sheehan’s Truck Centre in Burlington, Ont., for the honor. The truck’s a virtual history lesson. Most recently, the truck that will be on display in Fergus was escorted through Washington D.C., by a few hundred motorcyclists, as part of the Memorial Day Weekend. http://www.todaystrucking.com/images/usr_220709124206_Ally01.jpg And the good folks in Virginia didn’t overlook the Canadians who fought so valiantly in WW-II. Explains Volvo spokesman Jim McNamara: “If you look closely at the image on the fuel tank fairings, you’ll see Canadian flags in front of gravestones and a bagpiper playing, in remembrance of the role Canadian soldiers played on D-Day.” The Fergus show opens Thursday and runs until Sunday.
  21. Well, My SUV has been slowly crapping out and I knew with what was coming it was going to really cost me. Yesterday, I decided to go looking for something New to trade for, before I sunk even more $ into a lost cause. BAD NEWS - Robbed My Motorcycle Trip fund -I found a 2009 Extended Cab F150 that I traded for, but to do so I had to rob my trip money for down payment. Good News - New 2009 F150 - Man is it nice to have a truck again. Actually the truck with the V8 is going to get as good or better than my SUV did and I'll have even more towing power for my enclosed trailer. Bad, Bad News - With all my trip $ gone, I will NOT be coming to the International Rally in August. Oh well, S--t happens, I'll just be riding a lot of day trips. Got to talk to LA about the HUB room I had reserved for us and see what he wants to do. You'all better take lots of pictures
  22. Just got the phone call--trike kit has cleared customs in Sydney, and now will have pre-delivery check and then onto a truck for the journey to Perth. It's gettin' closer to me riding again:banana::banana::banana::banana:

  25. I was driving pass the local ice joint ,no I didn't stop, anyway there was a Harley sitting out front with a strange paint job for a Harley. What I mean to say is it was not a Harley original BUT it had a first gen truck on it, painted to match of course. I must say it sure made that Harley look good. Gives a new meaning for "Harley look-a-like":big-grin-emoticon: BOO
