  1. Another long post!! OH FUN!! As some of you know, I'm buying TopCat's '96 RSTC. I'm flying out of Austin on Sunday to Chicago's O'Hare and then on what will be the "wild" part of the trip, flying down to my Mum's in Decatur, Ill. on a VERY small airline that flies CESSNA Caravans!! I've never been in a small plane before so it could be quite an experience! I'm hoping that Chicago doesn't throw a monkey wrench into things like they did the last time I flew up there by grounding all small planes coming in and out of the airport. The last time I flew home, while on the trip back, the flight I was on got grounded at Champaign, about 50 miles from Decatur as they were not going to be allowed to land at O'Hare. I was lucky in that I still had an aunt living there at the time and I spent the night at her place. Well the trip to the Mum's is a direct flight but O'Hare lives up to Chicago's "Windy City" nickname, sometimes with a vengeance! The hubby flew up to Minneapolis this past week. His flight path took him thru O'Hare and he had to stay at the St Louis airport for several hours for that reason. Now the part of the trip that I may need help with is the "going home" part as I'm riding the bike back. The "new" Not So Wee Beastie hasn't been ridden much since TopCat bought it 2 years ago. I'm making a not so small detour on my way home to make the MD at KBran's place in Louisiana so that the bike can get a fairly thorough going over before I head for Brenham from there. Plans are to stop at Blytheville, Ark. on the 30th and make it the rest of the way to Covington, La. on July 1st for the gathering at Kenny's in Bogalusa the next day. The route is Decatur - Springfield, Ill. - St. Louis - stop at Blytheville, Ar. - cross the Big Muddy at Memphis - then straight down I 55 to I 12 and Covington. I've made a point of basically splitting the trip to Covington in half so in case of trouble or bad weather, I'd have the time to pull over and wait it out. One reason why I did not decide on the direct route due south from Decatur is that it goes right thru the middle of Cairo, Ill where all the flooding has been. I'd appreciate knowing about anyone along the route who can lend a hand if I have problems with the bike. I'd also be more than interested in semi-scheduling breakfast, lunch, or dinner with any VRO members along the route depending on what time I pass thru their neck of the woods. I'm hoping Mother Nature decides not to dump on me while I'm on the road [just do it at home PLEASE!!] but that hasn't stopped me from packing both sets of rain gear! I will post how my travels are doing and let everyone know just how the "new" Beastie is working out. C YA!!
  2. Planning a trip to California. Flying into LAX, renting a car and starting from there. (Motorcycle trip planned for the next month) Going for approx 10 days and would like to head up the Pacific Coast Hwy as far as Eureka possibly or suggestions. What other suggestions do you have as far as must see and routes in this area. Keep in mind I have seen LA south to San Diego.
  3. This Thursday starts our 17 to 18 day cross country run on the RSTD (Tybee Island Lighthouse near Savannah, GA to Fishermans Wharf in San Francisco and back). Thanks so much to everyone who chimed in on my prep thread, I feel good about the state of the bike (and her riders). We have been talking about this trip for so long that it feels very strange that we launch this week. Eating better and working out I have lost 35 pounds prepping for the ride and my wife has lost almost 30, we have been riding in the heat and living without A/C because we know TX, AZ, NM have the potential to be brutal. (my daughter who is not going, cannot wait until we go out the door to crank down the temps). We have done back to back long days and worked on our navigation I picked up a SPOT messenger and will post a link once I set up the trip map in case anyone wants to follow along. We may see you along the road, we may see you at the DQ Either way we will wave and smile.
  4. My nephew Colin in Seattle is filming a documentary beginning later this month that looks really interesting. Here's the link to the project: http://coffeeracerproject.com/ He will be departing Seattle on or about June 18th, and will be riding through WA, OR, CA, NV, AZ, NM, CO, UT, WY, ID, and then back through to Seattle. I along with many other supporters will be monitoring his trip on-line as he rides through these states and meets and talks to hundreds of regular Americans about "exploring the notion of choosing between pursuing our dreams and being present in our realities. Do we have to? Can we keep the magic of adventure and discovery alive while simultaneously being productive and responsible? What is it to grow up?" I love the fact that he is pursuing his dream of making this film, and that he is doing it on a bike. OK, so it's a Kawi KLR650 and not an RSV. But it's still a bike! Anyway, he asked me if I could recommend any really unique highways and byways through these states that he should consider including on the 3 week trip route. So if you know of any, please let me know and I'll pass it on to him. (And if you want to be a part of this unique adventure and help him reach his goal so he can be fully funded, visit the above web site and feel free to help him out.) Thanks!

    Solace

http://www.theusatrailerstore.com/motorcycle-trailer-and-hitch/solace-a-pull-behind-motorcycle-camper-trailer/ Very similar to the time out but about a grand cheaper. Anyone looked at them? Their warehouse is only about 101 miles away. I may make a road trip and check them out. I sent them a message to make sure they have a showroom. I'm sure they do.
  6. Have been feeling a little powerless to say the least for the last couple of weeks and I finally was so weak that I had our secretary fly me home from Norway a.s.a.p so I could be checked out by my doctor. I was situated very remote in Norway and getting to a hospital with all the right equipment was a complicated thing. To put a long story short he immediately made arrangements for a coronary catheterization and the operation was performed yesterday. There was a blockage at the end of one of the artery branches that caused my lack of power and my doctor inserted a stent in the artery to keep it open. WOW,,,I have color in my face again Feel like a champ and was lucky that this came up before my trip to the USA but I am coming in 10 days. Have the doctors permission to go - he just told me to take shorter riding days if I felt tired. So I thank God for watching over me and healing me before my trip. Just wanted to share this with you all Friendly regards from Iceland, Jonas / StarFan
  7. It's another. First I have the mini-stroke and wind up with 6 months off work (that part i'm not complaining about) but now they have screwed up my pay somehow. I've spent 2 days trying to get that straightened out. So that puts me in the hole and knocks me out of the M/D trip. I was soooo looking forward to that. So maybe next year again. You all have fun and enjoy the sunshine and cold drinks.
  8. I know that to many of you a 450 mile trip is just like a quick trip around the block. But for me this will the most monumental motorcycle trip I have ever conceived of. My one day record for riding was the 2009 WI MD where it was a 90 mile trip from my house to the site, then we went for about an 80 mile ride, then the 90 miles back home. OK so I'll never make an Iron butt, but I am in the running for a marshmallow butt award. The projects that must be completed before I can undertake this epic (to me) journey are; (in no particular order) 1. Repair HI-LO headlight switch. Done, it had a lot of crud/corrosion on the contacts. 2. Install trailer hitch on bike. FINALLY done with this one 3. Wire bike for trailer. Done 4. Build a trailer. Done. 5. Find and repair coolant leak. Done 6. Find and repair leak in rear tire. Hmmmm..... The leak seems to have gone away by itself. 7. Find a way to mount and wire my GPS. Got the electrical Done and just have to fab up some kind of mount. 8. All of the normal Spring maintenance that must be done before the first ride. Done and took a 80 mi shake down ride. 9. Repair storm damage to tent from the last time I used it, 4 years ago. Done, tent is good to go. 10. Grease rear wheel pins and install new HH rear pads. Got the brake pads changed, will save greasing for MD Wish list items; 11. Build and install receiver hitch for bike. The Receiver hitch is finally done, painted, and mounted for the last time. 12. Finish making my first run of valve shim tools. Finally the first new tool is finished. Making up the rest will be easy if this one actually works. 13. Would like to get a new full face helmet for the trip. Thanks to Mr BIG TOM I will have a new Helmet for the trip. 14. Buy and install driving/fog lights. I got the KC HiLites installed but they will have to stay with the stock halogen bulbs till I get more time after MD. So much to do and so little time left. Working on the bike is the hard part, it is kept in a tiny 8x10 storage shed that it has to share with all of the yard tools. I can not even put it up on the center stand in the shed and still be able to close the door, and I do have to be able to close and lock the door every night or the shed will be empty by morning. OK, I'll stop whining now.
  9. Does anyone know of any product that can be put on the windshield to help it shed rain? I checked Rain-X and on the bottle it says to not use it on plastics. During our upcoming trip, if we run into a lot of wet weather, would be nice if I could see out of the windshiels...and my helmet visor. Thanks.
  10. we had a small problem arise today. therefore I will not be able to make M/D this year. wishing you all a great time and safe trip Dray
  11. This year Grump & I are heading off on a long trip by 83 & 86 VR bikes. So far, there are a few planned stops, with about a month in the CFB Borden area & a side trip to South Carolina. This trip is part of his bucket list, seeing that he is now 70, it can't really wait. I want to, hit the International rally in Cody as well. A few members that I am in periodic contact with, told me that we must stop by during the trip, or I am in deep doo doo. So this is a general warning to all, that we will be meeting more of you this year.
  12. Greetings fellow Venturers. As some of you might know me and Greta my wife are coming to USA the 11th. of June and had planned to use our USA based bike for the trip. My friend Lynn "pegscraper" has been working on some motor modifications on the bike but at the last minutes before getting the bike ready we had some unexpected technical issues that still remain to be resolved, but am sure that Lynn will figure out soon. But time is running out so I had a very difficult time figuring out what to do. So,,,,Did what we do here on the site when we have trouble = Screamed for help. Now Big Tom, The Great Old Canary (Freebird) and Cecdoo have been running around helping me buy a new bike and making all kind of plans to make this happen. Today the Old Canar,,,ehhh,, Freebird went to look at a bike for me that was for sale in Cleveland and to put the story short the bike has been bought and will be awaiting mine and Greta´s arrival at Craigs (cecdoos) home in East PA at our arrival. Freebird is going to pick up the bike and take it to his home in Oberlin. Big Tom has arranged pioneer Motorsports to bring new White Wall tires for the bike for Maintenance Day along with some other parts, fluid change etc, etc,,,, Craig and Kim are going to attend in a cage so Craig will be able to drive the bike back to East PA after Maintenance day to have it ready when we arrive. Quite frankly this group makes the Red Cross look like Cosa Nostra. I can never thank these guys enough for their unlimited helpfulness and kindness and their support throughout all this mess. Without them our trip would most likely have been canceled with a loss of thousands of dollars (flight tickets, prepaid hotels and so forth). Would like to add that Craig and Kim told me not to worry if I did not have a bike - I could always loan their second car for the trip - And the old can,,,sorry,,,Freebird said,,,Heck Jonas - You just take my bike,,,I will not need it that period you and Greta are staying,,,,,,,,, And I live in Iceland and I am not here in the US to help you guys out when you need help. So, with a humble heart and tears in my eyes I just want to say to all of you: Thank you from the bottom of my heart - I simply have no other words to express my feelings. Warmest regards to you all, Jonas and Greta

    im sad

I found out that social security made a mistake on my monthly payments. and im going to lose a few $$$ i wont be able to make it to freebirds for MD this year. last year it cost me just a little over $300. to spend 2 days there and that was not bad this included one night at the oberlin INN and i spent one night sleeping at freebirds in my car. so with the wedding trip to MN this 18th to 24th of may i will be tapped out for the month of june after rent and basic needs i will be dead broke till july. i will miss seeing all of you. have fun and enjoy.
  15. Hi All, Great website and forum. I need your advice on a trip that I am about to take in 3 weeks. I just purchased a 2006 tour deluxe in LA and am driving the bike back to Vancouver, Cananda. I have 8 days set aside for the ride. I was hoping you could provide some suggestions as to great routes that will make this trip memorable. I was thinking the PCH was a must but I also wouldn't mind turning east and heading into the desert (Sedona, Vegas or Grand Canyon). Any advice would be appreciated.
  16. We just got back from a sucessful 1,239 mile trip from Friday to Monday with the new ride. Most have seen my "tearing into the bike" thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=56020 over the winter, working on the bike getting it ready for our riding season. Well I am happy to say that all of the work paid off for us. My wife and I had a great ride, no mechanical problems other than loosing a rear brake caliper cover, went back and found it. We got 35 MPG riding 2 up fully loaded. We left Grand Rapids Friday morning, and ended up in Alpena MI for Firday night. Saturday morning we rode the Mackinaw City, then to the UP out to White Fish Bay along Lake Superior, and back down to St. Ignace for the night. Sunday we rode the Lake Michigan lakeshore down to Traverse City, hit the Peninsula's and spent the night there. Monday we went down the lakeshore back to Grand Rapids, about 6PM. Only spent 30 miles on the highway, the rest was all back roads. Here are some pics: Lori and I in Travers City. http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/48269/2803200730101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Checking in at Alpena: http://inlinethumb46.webshots.com/48173/2675728800101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Our Rides: http://inlinethumb09.webshots.com/46728/2250786870101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Bro in law Bruce and wife Carrie: http://inlinethumb27.webshots.com/47194/2385049610101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Bro in law Mike and wife Viki http://inlinethumb30.webshots.com/48157/2932904840101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Lori and I http://inlinethumb04.webshots.com/46723/2168497760101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Killing some Bugs in the UP: http://inlinethumb45.webshots.com/45612/2246708790101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Bruce and Carrie on their Honda VTX 1300 http://inlinethumb39.webshots.com/47846/2616623040101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Mike and Viki on thier Goldwing http://inlinethumb55.webshots.com/48630/2868776040101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Crossing the Mackinaw Bridge http://inlinethumb14.webshots.com/48333/2828726390101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Sunrise out of our Motel Room in St Ignace http://inlinethumb34.webshots.com/45473/2382333160101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Store before entering into the Tunnel of Trees: http://inlinethumb10.webshots.com/48457/2125772260101950171S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb39.webshots.com/44966/2851284180101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Bald Eagle flying with us for 1/2 mile http://inlinethumb64.webshots.com/48703/2091793220101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Misson Point Lighthouse http://inlinethumb03.webshots.com/46210/2746093380101950171S600x600Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb50.webshots.com/45873/2613403180101950171S600x600Q85.jpg Heading south out of Traverse City: http://inlinethumb52.webshots.com/499/2904345580101950171S600x600Q85.jpg The weather was cold at times but had no rain and sunshine for most of the trip. Our seats were very comfortable but we were a little sore on the last 60 miles headed home so overall we are giving the Corbins a Thumbs Up! If you want to see the rest of the pics you can go to my webshots here http://rides.webshots.com/album/580175385SLgHDM There is some video that was taken from Mikes Goldwing Cam, I am waiting to see that and if it is any good Ill pass it along. Thanks for lookin!
  17. As some of you may remember, the wife and I took a trip to Niagara Falls last memorial day weekend for our anniversary. Had a great time and met some really nice people. This year is our tenth and I promised her a long time ago that I'd take her to Las Vegas. My treat in this trip is that we're renting a bike instead of a car to go and see the local sights. I just booked a Victory Vision. I rode one a while back for just a few minutes and am looking forward to putting some real miles on one. We want to ride out to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon. Any suggestions on the area are greatly appreciated.
  18. Breakfast - Me, the 16 yr old son, the 9 yr old son and the 9 yr old daughter. 19 yr old son is far too cool to get up for breakfast. 16 yr old looks out the window at the bright sunny morning and asks "Can you give me a ride to school on the bike this morning?" That started a chorus of 9 yr old "Me too!" Ok. 16 yr old first. 12 km round trip. Then the daughter. 8 km round trip. Then the other son. Another 8 km. Wake the 19 yr old so he'll get himself off to work on time, stow the kiddie helmet in the rack. Grab my tank bag (laptop and stuff for work) and off to the office. 18 km 1 way. Total 46 km. I'm 22 minutes late for work, but for some reason I can't stop smiling...
  19. Got back from Tail of the Dragon at Deal's Gap, NC. Spent 3 days down there riding in the mountain twisties with my Kumho on the rear and Perelli MT 66 on the front. It was a 5.5 hr ride to get there and rode all day to get back. I can honestly say I had no problem with the CT at all on the trip. I don't know how it would have handled with a MC tire on the rear, but I do know I had no problems with the CT. The mountains were absolutely beautiful. I plan on making this a yearly trip. Glenn
  20. Planning a trip from Vancouver along coastline to California border and back thru middle of Oregan, can anybody give some must see points of interest??Thanx:fingers-crossed-emo
  21. GETTING READY TO HEAD OUT TO BEAUFORT, SC TO SEE THE BLUE ANGELS THIS WEEKEND. THEY PUT ON AN AWESOME SHOW AND IT'S GOOD TO SEE OUR BOYS SHOWCASE THEIR TALENT. THE WEATHER IS BEAUTIFUL AND IT'S TIME TO RIDE. WILL POST SOME PICTURES AFTER THE TRIP.
  22. Okay, so the wife and I are leaving out on our first long road trip in June. I've been working on the trailer and plan to stay at campground along the way but am looking for someone willing to let us bunk up with them for a day or two along the way so we can shower and refresh ourselves. We will be going from Colorado Springs to Chicago, then following Route 66 down. We will be at the Eureka Springs Meet and Eat for that long weekend. Here's the map of our route: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=217067729114273134767.000498d3e23585862bb97&ll=41.376809,-96.37207&spn=22.416404,35.551758&t=h&z=5 And here's our trip book of some of the stops along the way. I had to remove the pictures to make it small enough to upload.... Nothing in it is set in stone but I wanted to at least have some ideas of things to see along the way. Although we would appreciate recommendations or VR Assistance at any of our stops along the way, if there is anyone in the Chicago area, we will be there on the 19th and 20th of Jun and need a place to sleep. Any recommendations of "must see" things anywhere along the route would be great as well! Thansk! Mike
  23. Will be heading out for a 6K+ mile cross country trip at the end of may on the 2005 RSTD (10K miles on her now). I will have new tires on her and an oil change, coolant check before we go. Any thing else I should make sure gets done? Final drive oil? Anything special I need to make room for on the trip? Thanks,
  24. This summer (July 16th - 26th), we're taking a trip from Utah to Madison, WI for STAR Days. After the event, we're planning on a 3-4 day ride back, and we're looking for some ideas on any can't miss spots along the way. From Wisconsin, we're thinking about heading back on 90 through Minnesota and South Dakota. Then to Wyoming and Idaho, and then back to Utah. Once we get past about the middle of South Dakota, we know were we want to go from there. I just can't figure out what there is to see between Madison, Wisconsin and South Dakota. Anyone have any recommendations for things which we want to be sure to check-out along the way? I appreciate the advice as always! Thanks & Be Safe! Pete.
  25. Just wondering if anyone would be interested in going on a little trip either Good Friday or the Saturday before Easter. This would be either April 22 or April 23. The trip is called Natchez Trace Wine Trail. It consists of 118 miles (approximately 2 hr and 15 mins) and visiting 4 different wineries in Middle Tennessee. They are Belle Meade Plantation Winery in Nashville; Keg Springs Winery in Hampshire; Amber Falls Winery and Cellars in Hampshire; and ending at Grinder's Switch Winery in Centerville. Pat and I would like to do this little "road trip" on either of these dates and wondered if anyone else would be interested. We could meet at Belle Meade and proceed from there. Let me know if anyone is interested and which date would be best for you. Don
