  1. Awhile back I posted a request for info on a 1986 Cavalcade http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60982 Well my friend ended up buying it and today I saw and rode it. This Bike was the Cavacade LS and man was it loaded with chrome and toys. It had options that had to have been brought down by aliens. On top ofthat the bike looked like it just came out of the box, apparently there were only 700 sold in Canada. I took the bike for a ride and it was very nice riding bike. However having said that I still prefer riding the venture. It felt to me like throttle response on the venture was much quicker and Handling was much nicer at least while in motion. Believe it or not the wheel base is a little longer, but the bike is lighter by some 200 LBS. Putting it on the center stand is a breeze. Along with the bike being lighter the center stand has a much longer step down bar on the side of the stand which swivals forward forward out of the way with the aid of a return spring type setup. The seat back was attached to the top luggage rack which could be slide back and forth depending on how much passinger room one needed. the seat and back rest were inflatable and it had automatic air ride suspension which you set at the touch of a button while sitting on the bike with both stands pulled up off the ground
  2. Hey, Just wanted to give a call out to any of our family here who find themselves in the midst of the flooding in the NE. I grew up in Binghamton myself and have seen some of the pictures and I know its not a pretty sight. Having served in the fire service for over the past 26 years I have seen my share of trouble however find that flooding and the aftermath that goes with it still is fairly close to the top of things I hate the most. Our prayers are with any and all who find themselves in a low spot at the moment. Keep us in the loop and let us know if there are any needs we can address. All the best, Norm
  3. anyone seen a trunk top rack like the one in this pic? this was my gf's old bike she had to leave with the x and she wants same rack for our 83 . Ive been looking all over ebay craigss anywhere no luck. now im thinking this particular one might not even associated with yama but i dont know.
  4. Well I'm making this seem much worst that it is, but the problem is starting to get worse. I finished putting my bike all back together after a whole host of maintenance tasks, like the valve clearance adjustment and unbolting the rad to give a little wiggle room to replace the regulator/rectifier. So a few days ago when I parked my bike after an hour long ride I noticed one drop of green coolant sitting on top of the lower cowling by the air filter. I thought, boy that's strange, how did that get there. I had a sick sense that something was going wrong. During the next ride I looked forward and noticed that there was coolant spray on the back of the front-right fork. I knew that something was wrong for sure now. When I parked I looked all over the rad and noticed that there was some coolant around the top of the rad fins and on the very top of the rad. It appeared that the coolant was coming from above the rad. So I stripped the bike down a fair bit to inspect further. I didn't notice any coolant leaking while the bike was off, so I knew this was a leak being caused while the water pump is on, putting pressure to the whole system. I also noticed that the 5" long heater hose that fed the top of the radiator had a decent size kink/bend in it. So I replaced it with new heater hose and better clamps. I should have done a hot idle test, but I decided to put the bike back together hedging my bets that I fixed the problem. Well, on today's ride to work the problem quickly developed and got much worst. The front fork was getting spray (though I could never see any stream of coolant while riding), the coolant was also streaming up my handle bars, on my right mirror, all over my tank, and some on my pants. This made a nice stain on my brown work pants which I am not happy about! So I'd appreciate any thoughts, suggestions, past experiences shared. No leaking when the bike is off, but it appears to be leaking above the rad when the bike is on. Though I haven't had the bike stripped down and running, the rad cap and hoses above do not look like they are wet, they still have some dust on them. Thoughts?
  5. OK.. with the Hannigan conversion you loose the helmet locks that were mounted under the top trunk. What's everyone doing with their helmets when your fully loaded down? I had to replace my helmet from the accident last year and the new version is slightly higher on the top and will no longer fit in the top trunk either. I looked at a couple of other lock mounting systems but curious what everyone has found to work for them. pa_don
  6. Went to drop something of on the bike, it started just fine in the (AC-ed) garage, drove about 15 miles and when i got done with my errand, it acted as though the battery was dying, forgot to raise the kick stand and she would barely turn over. Had to roll it of to start and the voltmeter just barely touched the top of the "12" at 3500-4000RPM. Temp was at the top of the green too, but at 95 degrees on new blacktop I kinda doubt that is an issue. so before i start tearing into anything i thought I'd ask for opinions. I have the new RR from the last group buy mounted on top of the airbox. I have the stator wired straight into the harness. I do have a new stator if need be. All running lights and brake/tail are LED. Headlight is modified to the two bulb system. No blown fuses I can find. Battery shows 12.87 off and running at 3K 13.8 +/- (at the battery terminals) It would seem there is no problem, but I don't want to get stuck and lose my new job.
  7. Not bike related, but neat to see. There building 90 wind turbine generators a few miles west of here.Took my grandson Jayden over there a week ago in the evening and showed him the makeshift railroad terminal where they unload everything for the top of the towers. The tower section come through our little town on semis everyday. Yesterday, we went during the day, and got to see them unloading some of the 143 foot long blades from the railcars. There's lots of towers started, but I finally found the one they're currently working on the top of. I'm going to take a drive over there this morning and see if I can catch them putting up another blade on it. Can't see this kind of stuff everyday. Later, Scooter Bob
  8. Yep,rear shock is history. So here I sit waiting to drop $12000.00 our new to us trike, which will be delivered Wednesday, and what do I see when I went into the garage to remove the Voyager trike kit for the last time from the Silver beast. You got it, oil on the floor. I planed on riding it to work tomarrow. Now on top of paying for the new trike, I have to come up with $500.00 plus for a shock! Anyone out there have a good used shock cheap, that will keep me going for a while?
  9. I got my Cavalcade running today and wow - what a ride! I'm impressed in the short distance I've gone. I sent the carbs in to have them rebuilt and then had a horrible time getting the airbox back on. A guy in my church who is rated one of the top mechanics in the nation came to my rescue! Now it is time to put her up for sale. I bought it to make a few bucks!
  10. Looking for a set of Pillow Top Seats Send PM. Thanx for looking
  11. Yes Beartooth pass officially opened all the way across last Monday. My wife, her sister & brother in law from Rome, Georgia and I rode across. Beautiful and cold. 33 degrees at the top with probably a 20mph wind. here are a couple of pictures. Norm
  12. I have looked at everything more times than I care to admit, but my faux tank cover simply will not lock into place with the TCI mounted on top of the air cleaner box. The a/c box is properly and fully seated, the carbs are full seated into their boots, and with the TCI on top of the a/c, there is just not enough room for the cover to be mounted. So, I am going to return both the TCI and the boost sensor to the stock location. What a waste of time. But learn something new everyday. Atleast I found my b/s wasn't working at all.
  13. Just got done relocating the TCI to the top of the airbox and while I was at it found the boost sensor to be bad and replaced it. Thanks to a popular member here, I was able to do so fairly quickly. Anyhow, now that the TCI is on top of the airbox, I am concerned with it getting hot due to the lack of cooling airflow around it. In its original location, while moving forward at any speed, air flow I think flowed around the TCI providing a cooling effect. Even though that air had passed through the radiator, I am pretty sure it was a lot cooler than the air that will now surround it being on top of the airbox. If this is correct, what would be the effect? Could that hotter air lessen the longevity of the TCI? Or am just one of those Mr. Fulla Schitt that I was reading about a few minutes ago?
  14. I've been fighting with the cover on the thermostat housing leaking on my '89. When I bought it 2 1/2 years ago, it had a small leak. I took the thermostat housing off and changed all 4 O rings. Everything was fine---for a little while. A month or two later it started leaking intermittantly. Usually when left outisde in the cold, but not always. Last winter I pulled it off again and replaced the O rings again, and also the housing cover because it was mentioned here that they do warp from the exhaust pipe heat. BTW, I put it together with O-rings I purchased at my dealer. It was OK all last year, but this winter it started leaking again. The coldest my garage gets during the winter is about 32 degrees F. When I took it apart, I found that the O-ring was damaged (it looked like it'd been nicked). I remember that it was real hard to get the top on the housing last year and the OE O-ring is 2mm dia., so I installed a 1/16" O-ring. Now it seeps a little bit when it starts to warm up, but when it's hot it's fine. BTW, 1/16"=.0625" 2mm=.079" I will pick up a Yamaha O-ring tomorrow, but I think that something else is wrong because it's happening so frequently. I cleaned up the main housing surface that mates wtih the O-ring so there shouldn't be anything keeping the O-ring from seating. With the 1/16 O-ring, the top felt snug. When I use a 2mm O-ring, it is TIGHT. I'm pretty certain that on my 83' I used a 3/32" (.094") O-ring, but there is no way I could get that to fit this bike. I used a coating of Vaseline to keep from damaging the O-rings when things were assembled. Any ideas?? I'm thinking of heating up the aluminum portion of the housing (in hot water) to get it to expand so that the top will go on easier and not damage the 2mm O ring. Frank D.
  15. I need some "forks for dummies" info. Never taken a fork off a big bike like this in my life [and it has been a long one]. Looks like a big job if they come out the top when taken apart. Do they come apart from the bottom? I need to rebuild the left side which developed some major squeaks.
  16. As most of you know by now I finished our trike (3.5 years). My problem is I keep pushing gear lube out of the vent that I installed. I installed the vent in the top left rear of the flipped over center section (no axle tubes). Now looking back on old photos, I can't see a vent in the the old gear case cover. I couldn't use it in the build so I threw it away. Does anyone out there have or know of someone that has a 1989/1994 Cougar or Thunderbird V6 with the 7.5" IRS. Could I please get you to look under the rear and see if there is a vent of any kind on the top rear of the aluminum cover? Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. PS Everything is closed up for Memorial Day so I can't get into any wrecking yards.
  17. I want to get a shorter tinted windshield but not sure about size. Is the windshield measured from the base of the screen itself or from the top of the chrome strip it sticks out of? Mine measures 17" from the strip.
  18. I finally got around to doing the mods to my seat that I had planned for a while. The nice warm temps we have been having here lately reminded me that riding season will be starting soon. I've done this mod on two other bikes in the past and it's very easy to do. Took me 2 hours yesterday while sitting at my living room table and that includes cleanup Anyhow, I created a webpage showing the mod for anyone that might be interested in doing this yourself. I'll update it with my impressions after I get my bike out of hibernation and get a long ride or two in. Pillow Top Seat Mod
  19. I have the Diamond R hidden Hitch and find it a pain hooking up the safety chains. Am I missing some thing or is there another option other than the 2 holes on top of the hitch inside the fender? How do you guys hook your chains on the hitch? I have been thinking about something like the picture below.....is this advisable? Keith
  20. Does anyone make one? Have been looking but to no avail. Seems to me it wouldn't be that hard to do: An aluminum channel same shape and thickness as the bottom of our stock windshield about 3 inches wide with receiver lugs in a channel on top side. top piece would sandwich bottom of stock windshield on top side and fit into reciever on bottom side with a quick release. Could also make a interlocking finger pattern between the two with one set screw. Hardest part would be getting the perfect bend. Love my windshield on the cooler days and interstate riding, but when it gets to 90 deg... At slower speeds it sure would be nice to take it off ... and possibly put it in fabricated shell that attaches to your luggage rack to protect it... Help I need more Wind! er... let me rephrase that... Help I need more AIR... LOL
  21. Anyone have a 1300, 1200 may also work, block that is split in half, I need some help on the location of the two oil nozzles in the care halves. When I sent block to machine shop, top & bottom, because they cleaned them, I took everything out. Including the two small oil nozzles & tossed them in a baggie. Well when cleaning stuff I realized they were different and I can't tell which one goes in which hole. 1st picture is attached of two nozzles. Left one is brass color with phillips slot, other is silver with straight slot. 2nd picture is of case top, and 3rd is of case bottom, locations for these. The 88 parts fiche indicates they both go into the bottom case. The service manual doesn't mention them that I can find. And, the VMax is different. The motor DVD mentions them but doesn't show them. The 83 1200 fiche shows them going into the case where I am 99.9% sure they go, but doesn't show the difference. Gary
  22. Is winter about over yet? I am getting tired of this crap. We have had over 40 inches of snow so far, and odds are we are gonna get quite a bit more. Had 6 inches yesterday, and wind is gonna pick up later today. To top it off temperature is supposed to dip to a balmy -33 below tonight, with windchills reaching -50 (insert expletive here)! I really like winter, but enough is enough......
  23. I have had my 08 Venture since May last year. It is the first bike I have had with a heel shift. The only advantage I see to the heel shift is that it saves wear and tear to the top of your left boot. I do not need to move my foot from its rest position to shift up if I use my toe, whereas I must move my leg back and lift it to get the heel on top of the shifter. So, my question(s): How many use the heel shifter? What advantages do you see to using it? Is it worth the effort to retrain myself to use this feature? Thanks for any thoughts.
  24. I have a 1985 VR with the large top box. I bought a black backrest on ebay, but, it is for the smaller top box. Anyone need a very nice black backrest?
  25. Thought you guys might lke to see this . . . I needed some cargo space that would accommodate my lap top & case (just a bit too big to fit into either of my hard bags) as well as a few other work items. So, I did some surfing and purchased an after market case and then fabicated a bracket to mount it over my rear fender. Check out the attached photos. - Norm. NOTE: I ride solo as my wife has her own ride.
