  1. I used to have an awesome tire gauge purchased years ago from Roadgear.. http://roadgear.com//ready-digital-tire-gauge-p-39.html?osCsid=511f930054c43a7b8504bb4dc4a73edd Unfortunately, I lost mine on an earlier road trip this year and bought a replacement and one for my buddy.. Unfortunately, the new version has turned out to be nothing but crap crap and more crap.. The company has been good enough to issue out new replacements without charge.. But those were not working properly either.. bad electronics in them like the previous ones.. then they sent again NEW gauges but those too were crap.. They acknowledged they discovered a bad production batch, either bad integrated circuit boards or bad batteries or both festering their stock.. So they sent me new gauges again (4th time now) and though one of the pair works, one of them failed miserably.. The alert is about how the seemingly working gauges reads 10 PSI too high of what the pressure actually is.. Every dead gauge that worked for a while then failed would read 10 PSI too high. My worry is that there might be a lot of people using these gauges and running around with too high of pressures in their tires.. Since some of us run our tires at the maximum ratings as it is, I would have to think what would happen on a long highway trip with 50 or 55 PSI in your tires? So if you have one of these gauges, do yourself the favour and double check them against another gauge to make sure you're not inadvertently heading for a dangerous situation..
  2. I have finished going through all of the posts for the generation 2 Venture. I have a 2008 model. From my readings and to keep from reopening some threads that have been unused for a while, here are my questions: 1. Reference to tires. On my previous bike, 2008 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 classic LT, it came with Dunlop tires. The wear rate on them sucked. I was only getting about 8000 miles or so out of a set. Switched to metzlers ME 880 and was well into my second year of riding on the same tires before I traded it for my current bike. Having read the threads here, I see some have had issues with the Metzlers. I did not on previous bike and current bike has a set of metzler's ME 880's on it. My question. Is there any issues with the tires? I run them on 40 lbs air in the front....42 in the rear. 2. I know I have screwed up my stereo system. The head unit works, but I have no sound. All fuses are fine. My question. Has anyone dealt with Pinwall Cycle Parts? The have a used stereo I can get to replace my current unit. I am aware that my current system is under warranty. However, don't feel like waiting through a long process for them to get around to replacing the unit. My only concern is their no exchange policy. 3. Another audio question. What year's of the bike use the same audio system? From looking at Pinwall's selection, they all basically seem to be the same size, ect....is there any difference between say a 1999 model and 2008 model stereo? That's all for now. Thanks!
  3. I bought the habor freight 78inch tag along trailer, those that have one ever went from 8 inch to 12 inch tires? Do the 8 inch work well enough?
  4. I know there has been other threads on this but it almost time for me to get new tires and what I am seeing is Avon Venoms or Metzlers or stock .Any other brands that are any good out there...... Ron:cool10:
  5. I noticed on this site that alot of folks replace their own tires. My other bike, kaw/ 1500 needs new tires and want to replace front and rear in the next few weeks. I'm mechaniclly inclined ,wrenched on cars for over twenty years and have the tools to do so. My question is, being that these tires are tube type is there anything I need to do as far as installing new tubes, such as not getting them pinched ect. and was told to use babay power to help in the installation. I plan on removing the wheels myself and removing and installing the tubes and tires. I have done car tires in the past, but all were tubeless. I guess my main concern is can I do this myself, or just remove the wheels and take them to the dealer or a tire shop and have them do the tires? Also a concern is the safety factor, never done this before and with only two wheels under me I don't want any issues. I will be purchasing a m/c jack in the next few days to do this, and recommendatios? Sorry for so many questions, but any suggestions would help me decide, your thoughts? Thanks in advance...
  6. Just got home and saw that my new tires had arrived. I went with the Avons again. There was a recent comment the the problem with the sidewalls cracking has been resolved. That may be true but the dates on these tires are 0610 for the front and 4310 for the rear so any changes were likely made after these were produced. I was a little disappointed in that these were made last year. I'm replacing two Avons that still have a lot of tread the the sidewalls are all cracked. I'm going to mount these but if I have the cracking issue again, Avon and I are going to have a little chat.
  7. I am on my way to Highland MI to visit my brother and have my RSV on a trailer. Yesterday I noticed a dimple in the front tire. Its about dime size and 1/16th deep. The tires have about 14500 miles on them and I believe I could get another 3000 out of them, but do to the dimple I feel the front tires should be replaced. Does anyone know of a good shop in the Highland MI area that I can call. I know that nothing will be open until Tuesday. Any help will be great.
  8. Well here's a tale of caution for thems who ride.. We all know to inspect our tires and keep proper pressures for tire longevity and good handling. Mid May while on a road trip down to the US I95 I hit such a huge divot in the road that it literally threw my assets out of the seat (no easy feat considering my size) but I was able to control the bike and carry on. Didn't see it coming due to the thickness of traffic and concentrating on not getting nailed by kamikaze drivers.. The incident left me with a Works shock that required re-adjustment, but the bike still rode a little dodgy for a while and I ended up getting used to it but doing the Dragon's Tail and BRP didn't feel 100% like it used to.. Checked the neck and all was good, suspension was good.. etc.. Oh well I must be getting old.. The bike still rode fine on the highway, and parking lots but it was that 30-40 mph windy roads that felt dodgy.. Now it's time to replace the front tire, the wear bars are showing, I got me my new replacement E3 tire and lo and behold, an odd looking imperfection or damage to the front tire caught my attention.. I'd not seen it before when inspecting my wheels but there it was.. About thumb sized depression into the tread, slightly off the centre of the tire, and a couple more smaller ones near it.. VERY odd looking and oddly enough never noticed it before. But it was readily visible this time. Luckily I was getting that tire changed! My best guess is a broken belt or something from when I hit that huge divot in May.. and it's now almost July.. wow. Its not that I don't look at my tires or that the depression was 'slight', it simply never caught my eye before then.. (any ideas anyone what that is?) Now with the new tire on the bike, I haven't been able to tackle any corners that gave me problems before (need to scuff them up on dry roads.. and we gots nuttin but rains here).. but already I can tell the bike tracks a lot better and handles a lot better (not just from the new from old tire feel you get after changing tires out). I just wanted to share this with you to keep an eye on tires, feel them with your hands, by rubbing the dirt off the tire is how the depression showed up.. I wish I had taken a photo of it before getting it replaced though I don't know if it would have shown as well. Cheers
  9. • Takes the technology of both the K291T and the K491 Elite G/T a generation beyond • Both front and rear sizes feature a computer optimized tread pattern which provide dramatic improvements in wet-road performance • Three-ply polyester carcasses are reinforced with two fiberglass belts • Tires deliver 50% more rear tire mileage compared to the K291T • Tube/tubeless construction Does anyone have any experience with these tires they have them in my size for my 86.

    tires

I don't post much here, mainly just read other's posts but I'm on quite a bit. What concerns me is the last few days I see other riders having tire issues, Avon's with the sidewalls cracking and tire blow outs. I kind find it hard to believe that us riders are negligent on tire care such as inspecting them, and maintaining tire pressures ect. What is the consensus that perhaps like alot of things now that the quality of materials are lacking? I guess in the back of my mind I'm thinking that the costs of raw materials in today's society that manufactures are going the cheap route, and lack of proper quality controls to produce a good safe product. When I get back to Pa. my other bike will need tires and I'm concerned on what to get. I put the e3's on the venture two years ago and couldn't be happier with the bike. How old can tires actually be to actually be safe to use? I realize that tires have a manufacture date, and set on a shelf for a while, but how old before the safety factor comes into play? Any other's see a possible trend here? Thanks..
  11. In preparation for our big trip next week I just installed new tires on the Goldwing after 4300 miles. The OEM Dunlops were 50% worn and starting to cup already. Since I have 6200 miles to travel on this trip I wanted to start out on fresh tires (Bridgestone 704/709). Since the bike is so new and I plan to go through many tires while I own it I went ahead an bought a set of Centramatics to put on with the new tires. I read many reveiws how they make the bike super smooth and feel like it was on rails. I bought into the hype. In reality, I really don't see any improvement in balance over using Dynabeads. I have a friend that just put new tires and Dynabeads on his wing and it is just as smooth. For the $229 that the Centramatics I could easily have bought a lifetime supply of beads. Hopefullly, down the road I'll see the benefit of the Centramatics. Dennis
  12. How do you store mc tires? Do you store them on their side or on the tread? I got a heck of a deal on two Dunlop D-404WWW, so I bought them. They were made in early Dec. 2010 and I won't install them until next fall. They are covered with a tire plastic with elastic in the center to keep it fairly tight. I will not put them in the garage attic due to heat, but will leave them on ground level.
  13. I have always loved my avon tires on the 1st Gen and Love them with this 2nd Gen I have enough tread for my trip to Don's Maintenance Day I was planning to get my tires done there You members with the 2nd Gens have a variety of tires .What the max mileage you got from your front and rear tires and what make are they I know that when I had the avons on the rear average wa 12,000 miles on the rear A little past the wear bars
  14. YATT - Yet Another Tire Thread OK...really this one isn't about which is best. I'm getting ready for a trip to South Dakota and am shopping for new tires. I have a small cut in my front tire (very small) and was going to replace it anyway, but yesterday I got a flat on the back of my Dunlop Elite 3 tire. So this next go around I have decided I am going to buy some of the Avon Venom tires. But the problem lies in shopping at the various vendors...NO ONE has the same catalog numbers and even searching the manufacturers number will not find the tires. I have a 2009 RSV-s. I want to replace both the front and back on the bike. I have checked the following sites: Dennis Kirk - Found some Venoms once...then nothing now. Jake Wilson - manufacturer catalog number does not work. Southwest Moto - Not sure if these are the right ones. Dang CONFUSING is what it is.... OK...at SWmoto tires is this the correct rear tire? http://www.swmototires.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=568&category_id=94&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53 And this the front tire: http://www.swmototires.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=555&category_id=94&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=53 These are cheaper at Jake Wilson and Dennis Kirk...but GEESH. If anyone could provide the exact catalog numbers (or links) to both the FRONT and REAR tires for the AVON VENOMS from Dennis Kirk and Jake Wilson...I would appreciate it. Also...should I also get new valve stems?
  15. So, I'm planning on putting new tires on the scoot before we leave for Cody. I got a price "on-line" which is out of the US on E3's bias ply. I then requested a quote from a local supplier and darned near fell off my chair. Front was $51 more and rear was $62 more and that's after a 20% discount. I am waiting for a response as to if they quoted on Radials. So, my Q is, do you guys buy bias or radial E3's ???
  16. I'm looking at replaceing my front tire with an E'3. I'm running an Avon on the back now, will this cause any problems? Also, where do you guys buy your tires? Thanks for help.
  17. Ok, I'm having a problem here. I ordered new tires from them on May, 17th 2011 and they comfirmed the order by the next morning. I used PayPal and my bank account showed the proper debit by the end of May 18th, 2011. Since then..........nothing! I have tried to contact them by e-mail twice with no response and tried to call their number (1-520-628-2947) and it is disconneted. The listed fax number (1-520-784-0564) is disconnected as well. ' I know they no longer will take orders over the phone but they seem to be unavailable at all. Any one know what is going on with them or have a working phone number? Mike
  18. TRUCKER'S BREAKFAST A trucker came into a Truck Stop Cafe' and placed his order. He said I want three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards.' The brand new blonde waitress, not wanting to appear stupid, went to the kitchen and said to the cook, 'This guy out there just ordered three flat tires, a pair of headlights and a pair of running boards.... What does he think this place is, an auto parts store?' 'No,' the cook said. 'Three flat tires ... mean three pancakes; a pair of headlights.. is two eggs sunny side up; and a pair of running boards... Are 2 slices of crisp bacon ! 'Oh... OK!' said the blonde. She thought about it for a moment and then spooned up a bowl of beans and gave it to the customer. The trucker asked, 'What are the beans for, Blondie?' I LOVE THIS ONE......... 'She replied, 'I thought while you were waiting for the flat tires, headlights and running boards, you might as well gas up! FOR ONCE THE BLONDE GETS EVEN!!!!!
  19. After much deliberation, I had Avon Venom tires mounted on my RSV '08. The stock tires lasted a year (15,000 km). The point of my post is the warnings from the dealer: "Ride carefully for 100 - 400 km, as the tires are slippy. Be specially careful if it's wet." And I was asked to sign a waiver which confirmed I had heard their warning. I understand that tires have a compund sprayed on them to preserve them while sitting on a shelf. Surely there is something you could rinse the tires once they are being mounted to minimise that new slipperiness? It's showering this week-end in Vancouver, BC... kinda like April weather! So it may be a while before I can properly test the tires to see if Avons on a Venture are as good as they were on my previous two bikes.
  20. Howdy. I'll be replacing my stock Bridgestone tires in the next month and am in the middle of doing a little research. I've read a whole bunch on here about different tire brands and what people like and dislike and I believe I've decided to move forward and purchase the Avon Venoms for my 06 RSTD. My questions is about the tire rating. There are a lot of posts that talk about tire rating but I haven't found any that actually answer my specific questions. Hopefully someone can. Here goes: If I have a front tire rated 71 (520 lbs) and a rear tire rated 80 (992 lbs), does that mean the total capacity for the bike is 1512 lbs? Put another way, if the above is true with regards to ratings and the bike weighs in at 844 lbs, does that mean I can have roughly 650 more pounds of me, the wife, cargo, accessories, etc? The reason I'm asking this question is that I've always wondered how much I'm stressing the tires when both my wife and I are riding. I'm not a small guy (I go about 325) and with my wife (I'm not dumb and won't give out her weight) we weigh in right around 475 lbs (you do the math ). That's quite a bit and when you add in clothes, helmets, jackets and so on, we may get close to that 500 lb mark. I just want to make sure I'm riding safe and I noticed the Avon Venoms have a high rating. What will that mean for me? I appreciate everyones thoughts.
  21. Ok so let start this by saying. "Thanks to everyone that has commented on Avon tires that cracked":happy34: I've had Avons since 2005 (except for the emergency replacement). I would like to hear from members that have gotten Avon tires with-in the past year and had good tires. I love my Avons but am a little concerned about the recent cracking problems that a few riders have commented on. I almost ordered some E-3's but then decided to start this thread and wait till Monday to do the ordering.
  22. JakeWilson.com had a price increase on all tires. Today, I ordered Avon Venoms and paid $12 per tire more than when I looked earlier. Saving Grace, Avon has a $25 per tire rebate to 15 May 2011. Attached is the Rebate Form. MIKE aka Uturn
  23. Over the last two days, I decided to jump in to the "project" before the pretty weather arrived so a few thoughts to share..... Dunlop Elite 3 tires from SportTour in Cincinnati for $117 and $119 seems to be a pretty decent price. They also have a nice website with lots of good things at rather decent prices. No real problems changing then at all and the rear needed no weight to balance at all. While I was in to it, and since I had the Super Brace and some new Progressive for springs, it was only logical to do that at the same time, so I jumped in. The archives on this website were absolutely critical in being able to complete this task with little to no difficulties. To all those who have shared their experiences, I offer a humble and heartfelt "Thank You" Here are a couple of things I learned while doing this project....... - a 5/16 hitch pin clip works just fine in the rear axle nut( had one in the parts drawer) - AutoZone has a set of hex bits in 12, 14, and 17 mm for $9.95 that will be a great addition to anyones tool box. They are 1/2 inch drive and the 17 is perfect for the forks. Anti seize on the threads helps them go back in very nicely. - on the recommendation of a racer friend, I used Mobll 1 full synthetic in the forks. We'll have to see how that works out. - a 3/8 inch impact works nicely for helping remove all kinds of bolts and nuts that have never been touched. The hammering action helps break up corrosion on threads without the fear of breaking things. It doesn't take a high setting at all to move things. After I got everything back together, I just had to go out for a bit to scrub then new tires in a bit. Even with being quite cautious to no get too excited with the new tires, I was astounded with the difference in the feel of the bike. The little voice in the back of my head kept saying "where are those guys on the Ninjas?" but I did my level best to ignore him. Weather or not, I am riding this fabulous machine a bunch this year, starting tomorrow.....
  24. As most Know, I decided to sell the 86 VR to buy a bike that had a lower seat height. I found a 00 Royal Star in good shape in Austin and went to pick it up yesterday. (missed the Maint Day in Houston). It has plenty of power and is in excellent shape. BUT. I can feel every ridge and bump in the freeway. Maybe I was spoiled with the CLAS on the VR, But I can seen why this guy said he had back problems. It has Avon tires on it, so that may be part of it. I noticed very little rear suspension travel and felt like it may have bottomed out a time or two. Now the prior owner was 6' 3" and about 250, but I am only 190, so what's up>
  25. A lot of discussion on MC tyres gets entered on the site. Not intended to open more debate on which is best. Just wanted to post this for those interested in getting more information on MC tires. http://www.conti-online.com/generator/www/de/en/continental/motorcycle/themes/download/technical_manual_uv.pdf
