  1. Hello all, I was just wondering if there is anyone close to Akron Ohio that might be able to help change out my tires? I'm willing to take them off and all, but I don't have the tools to break them down and spin balance them. If someone's got their on little garage that is willing to help, I'd be more than willing to through a few bones their way for the effort. Please feel free to PM me. Like I said, I'll take the old tires off and on, I just need help getting the new tires on the wheel hub and balance them. Thanks
  2. Most of you know my Dunlop D404 is shot after 4.5-5K on the back of the 84. Last year before our trip to the beach and vogel I installed new Kenda Kruz tires on the 89. after 3000 miles I can say the tires still look like new. Handling and ride is good with no problems. The 89 only gets rode two up while the 84 is my solo machine. I bought the kenda's because the price is right and the rear tire is a 6 ply rating instead of 4 with a load capacity of over 900 lbs. I just ordered a new set for the 84. $145 shipped to the front door. The tread depth on the rear is a very deep design. http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/tire-tyre-guide/Kenda-K673KruzF.jpg Kenda K673 Kruz Front http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/tire-tyre-guide/Kenda-K673Kruz.jpg
  3. Hi all, great forum as always. I'm in the process of changing tires again. I have an 86' that my wife and I ride heavy and hard pulling a trailer. We'll do 6-10k/year. I've been through most brands of tires and would like to find a rear that would last more than 6-7k. Is there any car tire that will fit? What's the longest lasting non-car tire I can put on? Seems I've spent a fortune in tires in the 50k or so we've put on riding this bike. Too back breaking to be changing so often. Thanks! J
  4. Anyone warranty their avons? Tires bought last year, Venom X tires, premature cracking on both tires. Rear has one crack at the tread that looks deep and appears to be leaking air slowly.
  5. Having reviewed all the previous questions on this forum regarding tire sizes, and having a lot of knowledge about tires...I am willing to ask if anyone has tried a lower profile rear tire on their RSTD or Venture yet ? I currently have the newer Dunlop E 3 bias belt tires on, and they are relatively new...but...given my propensity to eating up tires, I am always looking for my next set of tires. In 2003 I went through 10 (ten) sets of tires (front and rear) in ONE year, on a 2003 GL1800. Yes, I rode that many miles in one year. I currently have my own Snap On electronic computerized wheel balancer, and a Snap On fully power tire changing machine. That means if anyone is in my area and need emergency tire work, come on down. What I want to put on the rear of my '06 RSMTD is either a set of bStones...with the rear size being a 180/70-15 (G-702), and the front being a 150/80-16 (G-703). If someone tells me that they have tried those, and they will not fit in between the swingarm and driveshaft, then I would try the Avon Venom AM42 on the rear, with a size 170/80-15, and a AM41 front, with the size being a 150/80-16. What I want to do...is put Radials on this bike. What say ye, all you experienced tire mod people??? Thanks, Miles Million Mile Rider:bighug:
  6. Got new tires for the krusing the Kootenays. Removed the wheels last night and took it all to shop to swap over. All was good, they took the tires right away $55 for both to mount and balance:cool10:. Picked them up just before closing and ran some errands, alls good. At 9:00 I've cleaned and greased the splines, mount the rear tire and start tighting everything up. Huh? Castle nut won't torque? Shoot! Lost the collar going between hub and brake caliper bracket! Searched all over garage floor, nope. Now I'm a little crazy, shops closed on Sundays I can call them Monday but if they don't have it I'll have to order one. Going to bea little antsy till then, and hopefully can get one by Thursday. . Next time I remember to check for lose parts before moving to far. Thanks just needed to rant. Markus (calgaryrider)
  7. I've owned this 84 Venture Std for almost a year now, and this spring she got a new set of tires. I searched this site for recommendations on tires and found as many opinions as members. I finally decided on Dunlop D404s because they are common to similarly sized bikes and priced right. One of the tires must have had a slow leak...which started this learning exercise. A week or so after installation, the bike began to have a really pronounce wobble from the rearend at any speed over 50, and worse as you speed up. I checked and found the rear tire to be quite hot and the pressure to be ~20 psig . Pressurized up to 50 psig and rode home. I'm guessing that the hot tire and elevated pressure finally seated the tire properly, because the leak has now disappeared. That's what I was hoping for. Lesson 1: The low pressure led to a weak sidewall, which allowed the tire to wobble around...increasing the pressure stiffened the sidewall and returned the ride to normal. Not too long after that, I got comfortable with the new tires and began to push the bike a bit. I then noticed a slight wobble from the rear, while in a sweeping turn at any speed over 75 mph . I played around with the rear tire pressure and found that 50 psig was a bit more stable than my usual 40 psig in those sweepers. That sent me on a search for an explanation of tire ratings. Lesson 2: The rear D404 is rated for 761 lb @ 41 psig, while the bike weighs ~1000 lb with me on it. I should have checked the load rating prior to purchase. My opinion now is that the load rating of the D404 is too low for a bike of this size. Based on my experience and riding style, I will not be putting another set of D404s on my 1st Gen. If you ride slow and take it easy, these tires will be fine...but I like to push it a little bit more. My next set of tires will have a stiffer sidewall and higher load rating. Just thought this might help someone out there that's trying to decide on new tires for a 1st Gen.
  8. Two quick questions for those who trailer often. I have an '86 VR and Piggybacker trailer. 1 - What air pressure to you run in the trailer tires? 2 - Getting some sway when I hit 75, below that is good. Any adjustments I can make? Dave
  9. My local shop wants 65 labor to change the tires each for me---is that a fair price? Thanks everyone chris
  10. can bigger wheels and tires be put on this w/o a lot of trouble?
  11. What do you recommend to Balance and Seal Tires? I'm looking for 1 product that will do both. Thanks.
  12. It has been a while since I anounced my intention to replace my Venture's tires with the New Bridgestone Exedra Max tires. So here is the latest on that. I finally got the Exedra Max tires mounted today. I think they are a good looking tire. At least as good as a black-wall tire can be. Their profile seems a bit rounder than the old Exedra. That should improve cornering quite a bit. The tread on the rear is really deep. Tire pressure is 41 and 42. Since it was cool I put them at 40. I will see where that takes them when they warm up. Also Bridgestone rates them highly for rain and the tire groves look like they can move some water. Being in Seattle it won't take long to discover the truth in that. On to the road test. For break in, other than rocking back and forth on the straight aways, I didn't do anything special. The first thing I noticed was the loud noise from my old tires was gone. For now at least these tires are very quiet. Yea. At freeway speed handling seemed normal, good. Lane changing and maneuvering is exactly where I like it to be. Long sweeping turns were quite enjoyable. I didn't pick up on any unpleasant traits. Another yea. Now for the acid test. Off to the parking lot. Lock over u-turns and sharp cornering was exceptional. A much better feel than either the old Bridgestones or the Dunlop 404s. That's three yeas. Summary It is difficult when comparing new tires to old ones. And I would have preferred white walls. But for the initial ride these tires seemed to meet all of my expectations. Only time will tell if these early perceptions will hold up. Or if the multi compound rubber provides the additional tire life I am hoping for. But for now I think the Max is a winner. And it comes in the right sizes. Mike
  13. Over on the Ride On thread a couple of guys said they got 24-30k out of a set of tires. That is WAAAAY more than I get. I only get 11-12k per set. It got me wondering what kind of mileage your getting and how your set up. My set up is.... 2010 RSV 2 up most of the time. Combined weight 400+lbs I pull a trailer about 1/4 of the time. E-3s with 40f-40r Lots of mtn. roads.

    Michelin tires

I have found a great deal on 2 Michelin Commander 2 tires..I have never ran these tires so are they good tire yes or no... I would like to hear from someone that has ran them...Road noise, cupping Etc. Thanks
  16. It's nearly time to swap tires again. So far I haven't seen anything I can get real excited about. Bridgestone Exedra poor handling and short life, Dunlop light on construction and short life, Metzler 880 throws chunks, Commander II doesn't have our size, Avons have cracks and so on. So I have figured out there are no good tires only less bad. Bridgestone came out with the new Exedra Max last year. It has dual compound rubber and a high load rating. Has anyone tried these tires yet? They make both a 'b' size and a plain size (150/80-16 and a 150/80b-16). I assume the b is for belted. Can anyone suggest which would be better for the Venture and why? I am considering these even though they only come in black wall and I prefer white walls. Mike
  17. I need a rear tire in Asheville NC ASAP Any one know a good dealer?
  18. I have been using the Continental TK16 and TK17 ContiTour tires on our 1986 for years. Handle great, wear fantastic, and have a good price. So, to reward me for being a loyal customer since 1982 (1981 GoldWing), they discontinued the tire. HOW DARE THEY!!! Don't they know how many classic touring bikes have used these for years? Next, Dunlop will discontinue the raised white letter Elite II. Crap, they heard me! I guess I will try a set of Elite 3 tires on the old girl. Can you tell I hate change? JB
  19. Here we go....... Looking at tires for my 07 Venture. Currently have the original tires with 14,255 miles on them. Rear is ready to be replaced. Going to replace the front only because it's 5 years old. Here's my questions..... I have read about someone with a Michelin Commander || on the rear. What would be suggestions for the front? Michelin does not make a front tire for the Venture. I haven't had any problems with the Dunlop 404's which are what's on the bike now. Also, the member that has the Michelin Commander ||, has it on a first gen. As far as the riding I do? Mostly highway and around town. Don't have many twisties around Joliet but would like a set of tires that would be good for that when I get the opportunity. The Venoms were discontinued and I know I have read a lot about people using those. Just not sure if I should stick with what I have, or go to something different. I'm kind of one of those that figures if it's not broke, don't fix it. Anybody's thought or suggestions are welcome and appreciated. Thanks for putting up with me babbling. Kevin
  20. i received an e-mail this morning from Shadetreepowersports in n.ohio about a $40 mail in rebate on avon venom tires, they listy our front tires at $140,99 and the rear at $149.99 i've order many thing from them in the past they always were good to deal with, oh and says the tires are in stock,, steve,,
  21. Do the 1983 tires take tubes? In other words do I need to order tubes along with my new tires? Thanks
  22. I just love the way a bike feels on new tires. Just say'n.....
  23. I bought this beauty last night, only 8K miles and lots of nice extras, including a Corbin seat and backrest. I ordered some new Avon venoms also, as the stock tires were squared off and past their best, oh and also ordered a short wide Yamaha windshield. Now do I keep my Road Star...........?
  24. Question..........I put new Bridgestone bias tires on my bike. They don't grip as well as my former bike with radials. What is the harm of switching to radial tires for my 2001 Royal Star Venture? I generally haul a passenger, and I'm an overweight, tall guy. I'm not sold on any brand tire, just wanted a tire which is safe, grips well and doesn't follow all the grooves on the road. Suggestions? (on brand) - Comments on radials? Thanks. Dave
  25. Well here goes. I've read all the posts about Shinko 777 vs Dunlop 404's. Most of the post or threads were for Gen 1. I am going to put WWW on my 2000 RSV MM and trying to decide on which of the only two brands that handle MT90-16 for the front & 150/90-15 for the rear, Shinko & Dunlop. Anybody with experience with these tires or any suggestions where to find more brands of WWW tires in these sizes. Sorry to start this thing about tires again, but I haven't found any really definitive answers about these tires for a 2nd Gen.
