  1. My rear tire lost a chunk approx 8 to 10" long today! My wife and I were on the interstate at approx 70ish when I felt her go! I pulled over right away and once my wife told me what was wrong, she rode home with a fellow rider and since it lost no air, I puttsed it home max 25mph for approx 10 miles. Now I don't know What to do. We plan on converting to a Trike this winter, so I don't want to buy a new tire, but I also don't want to stop riding for the year! I'd really like to get a used tire for next to nothing, just to ride the rest of the season. I know that an Angel was looking over us and kept the tire from blowing completely! We could've very easily have gone down. I plan to take a pic and email it to Dunlop, for wat it is worth. They are 2 years old with Im guessing 10K on them, so I'm sure Dunlop won't care, but I am going to send the Pic anyway. This should never happen. Craigr
  2. After 31,000 miles it is time to replace my Kumho tire. I have been well satisfied with her travelling to Texas, to Utah, crossing the pass near Breckenridge, Colorado at about 11,500 feet, riding the Highway to the Sun, in Glacier NP, Montana, and visiting Ohio for our MD at Don's. All those miles and the tire preformed flawlessly! Time to see for myself, now that I have personnel experience with a car tire, what difference going back to a motorcycle tire will do for my bike. I read an excellent article recently in one of the Bike magazines regarding why one should not turn to the darkside. I bow my head to their wisdom and knowledge. My decision to leave the darkside is not based on this article though. My experience, with the car tire, just does not track with what they are saying. Leaving the darkside, at least for the life of one motorcycle tire, is my way of figuring out what is best for my bike. I ordered an Avon Venom this morning.
  3. I am reviewing the list of what items are necessary to bring with the bike (1st gen Venture) and for the bike when I go on road trips, that are not already included like fuses. My list includes: Tire repair kit, plugs and patches Tire inflator pump/compressor Tire guage Universal fit tire tube, for when tire can't be plug repaired Tool Kit Extra Spark Plug 1 Qt motor oil Shop towel (rags) Spare turn and stop bulbs Extra TCI unit Rain gear, poncho Seat towel Winshield cleaning solution Water bottle Emergency food rations Flashlight Multi-purpose Leatherman tool Cell phone w/ charger Credit Card Any other suggestions? -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83, 88 Venture
  4. went to my uncles house last week end and he has an insanely steep driveway with a 90 degree turn half way up that is recessed in the middle, don't know what inspired me to stop there but i did and with front and rear tire propped up on the hills i put my foot down and nothing was there. smash onto the crash bars with my aunt and uncle sitting on the front porch wondering who the idiot fallen into the bushes is
  5. So I have noticed a High pitched hum from I believe the rear wheel. It starts at about 60 and gets louder the faster I go. However it only shows up when I am riding Solo. If I toss the 80lbs kid on the back it is not there. I had my tire changed this spring and just noticed it last week. but then I rarely ride at highway speeds when I am alone. I am wondering what I should check? is it possible something was not done correctly when they changed the tire. I have also picked up a vibration this year that was not there last year. A friend told me this could be due to the front tire. The tread still looks ok but you can feel some small bumps when I run my hand over it.
  6. Was in a rush to get a back tire put on today and called one of the stealers that I had used when I had my V-Star. Called and got the price of $150 for the Metzler tire and $55 to put it on. After I got there, the $55 turned into roughly $180 with one excuse after another. I'll be pulling the wheel off tonight and take it somewhere else. While I'm that far down, i might as well add in a few grease zerks.
  7. Hi, I am looking to buy a new rear tire for my 04 RSV. Looking at the Dunlop Elite 3's and the Michelin Commander 11. Any comments on either one good or bad. Also a good place to buy them. Thanks Kelly
  8. OK, I'm ordering a new E3 for the Rear on the 08 RSTD.( MV85B-15 ) As to installing a Narrower, front tire to replace the OEM Bridgestone ?? ( The 150/80 - 16H OEM now installed ) Dunlop is showing Front size, 150/80-16, and MT90B16H sizes for E3 type. OK question, is for installing a Narrower Tire on the front, what is the preferred Brand, and Size to order. ( Not the cheap tires !! ) Is the MT90B16H the one to order ??? Or do I have to get a Michelen, or Avon for the front, in order to have the narrower tire up front for Improved Handleing ???
  9. Had a flat on the trailer about 3 weeks ago. I think I can plug it though.
  10. My buddy who has a Triumph Tiger 1050 and I went on a three day, 1450 mile run last week through Western Colorado and Southern Utah. The second day rained much of the day, but still a nice scenic ride. Pulled into the Motel about 5 PM. While walking back from dinner, my buddy noticed a small (1/8") rock embedded in the middle of his rear tire. While trying to remove the rock, he noticed that it had put a small hole in the tire. This tire was near the end, about 1/32" above the wear bar. We couldn't believe our good luck, finding this in the Motel lot instead of on the side of the road. It had even quit raining. My buddy's string type repair kit's glue had dried out. I said not to worry, I have a "Stop and Go" kit http://www.stopngo.com/ and a Slime air compressor. I have had this kit for a couple of years, but never used it and all of the plugs were still sealed in the original plastic bag. The plug went right in and the tire aired up with no leaks. The next morning we checked the tire and it had not loss an ounce of pressure so off we went. We made it about 20 miles (two lane highway) when it went flat. The plug was gone. No choice but to install another plug. Plug once again went right in and held good. Off we went again. This time we made it about 5 miles before the tire went flat. At this point, we were about 25 miles from the nearest town. I rode to town to get a string type repair kit. My buddy installed a new plug. This time he made it about 2 miles before it went flat. Same thing, plug gone. When I returned, we installed the old fashion string and glue repair kit. This plug held the full 400+ miles home. I don't know what went wrong, but I am presuming that a steel cord cut the mushroom head off of the plug when the tire was in motion. Don't know if reaming the hole out better would have made a difference, but the bottom line is that the old style string and glue kit held. My buddy was suppose to ask the tire tech what he found in the old tire, but I have not heard.
  11. I just checked my rear tire and have 3/32's left in the very center groove. Don't think I would want to take a long trip on it but it should last awhile longer. Approx. 12,000 miles on it now with no cracking. How much do you think is left in the life of the tire.
  12. went out to the jp cycles museum the other day and saw a first gen with a first gen "run flat" tire on it and thought i would share with everyone!
  13. Has anyone tried a 170/80-15 tire on the back of the 2 gen Venture?
  14. Seen a used Backpacker trailer for sale on the way home from the International. Looks new and hardley used, has spare tire. Anyone know what they are worth?
  15. Well... No matter what, it never ends! I just finished getting a pair of Like New OEM mufflers from Hulk They are just like new & I had them installed in less than 30 minutes. My bike is sooooo quiet now. While I was laying on my back tightening the bolts I saw my Avon Venom rear tire. Not only was it terribly cracking on the side walls... it had a bald spot down to the belts with just 11,000 miles. Argh! So now I have to: change rear tire - going back to the Darkside with a Nanking change the rear drive oil change the motor oil clean up everything on the bike ...just so I can go on a short 1500 mile ride in 2 weeks. ...and of course, I'll enjoy every minute of the work - JUST LIKE ALL OF US DO
  16. I left for work this morning at 05:30 and made it 3 miles from work when the rear tire blew out at 50 mph the scoot got real squirelly.I managed to stay on the bike and get it to a stop before I figured out that I was alright.I got it off the road and called for a ride when one of the guys from work stopped to pick me up.I looked at the rear tire that only had around 6 thousand miles on it there was no side wall. If I hadnt reinstalled the hack last night I might be in the hospital right now. The bike is in a friends garage and I got a ride over to the Beer Cave to get the 92 so I can get around. I will be removeing the rear wheel after work tomorrow and installing the hack on the 92 so I dont take up the guys garage all weekend and will be installing the 3rd new rear tire Monday after work.:bang head::bang head::mo money: I will try to get pics when the tire is off so you can see what it looks like. Jeff
  17. I changed out my rear tire this week after 11,200 miles, and it was the poorest performance on a rear tire I've had in 4 years. I'm a big fan of the ME880, and I've always gotten 15K+ miles from them, and significantly more on the front tire (my current front tire has 22K on it, and still has very good tread). I'm wondering if the combination of more long distance trips over the last 9 months, greater weight on the back (between riding two up and/or carrying heavier luggage for longer distances), and especially the more excessive heat conditions we've had this year on our trips are all playing into this poorer-than-average mileage I got this time around on the rear tire. Or maybe I just got a sub-standard tire back there to start with last time around. The date stamp on it was 5110, so it wasn't a very old tire when installed in September of 2011. I always keep 40 - 42 psi in the rear, along with 25 to 30 psi in the shock, so those variables are pretty consistent. Is there any intel on overall motorcycle tire performance with heat as a variable? I've Googled the subject, and there's not much out there.
  18. Could someone please tell me if this tire is a good deal and a good tire for my RSTD 2008? Thanks Joe Flea bay item rear tire 310409542369 and 280912660357 front tire
  19. I have a conundrum concerning the installation of a new front tire on my 86. Part of the problem is probably of my own making and the remainder remains a mystery to me. I installed a new Dunlap E3 and put in 2 oz. of the Dyna Beads. Since this was my first motorcycle tire self-replacement I took my time and read the posts and even watched a video on tire changing. Removed the old tire, polished the rim, removed all the old weights etc. Installed the new tire (MR90-18 71H) and put in the beads, aired it up and everything looked fine. Took the bike out for a ride and did maybe 100 miles. The front tire exhibited a noticeable hopping at low speeds and more so on starts from a standing stop. The the "hopping" disappeared when the speed was increased to above 10 mph or so. The problem: took the bike out for another run and pushed it up into the 80+ mph range (fast for the curvy roads around here). No problems noted until some more vibrations of a much higher frequency developed at higher speeds. When I returned home and was about to turn into my drive the front started a violent head shake. I was rolling right along at the time and was on the front and rear brakes to slow down and turn. The "hopping" was very noticeable and then the head shaking began. Could not turn into the drive and coasted to the neighbors drive and found that the front tire was completely flat and had come off the safety bead on one side. Naturally the Dyna Beads were all over the neighbors drive. Walked home, picked up the air tank and returned to the bike and pumped up the tire, as if nothing had happened. It is still holding 40 psi this morning. My part of the problem is that I put the 'light spot" opposite the valve stem, in reverse of the accepted method. Now what the heck is the remainder of the cause of the tire loosing all the air in a few seconds with no apparent reasons? This experience is certainly not a confidence builder. Any help would be greatly appreciated. PS: As this bike is normally ridden with a side car attached the rake of the triple tree has been increased by about 7 degrees. I was not riding with the car attached when this occurred.
  20. Kind of interesting read. if anybody cares http://www.ridermagazine.com/browse-by-type/tires/2012-touring-sport-touring-tire-buyers-guide.htm
  21. Hi all, great forum as always. I'm in the process of changing tires again. I have an 86' that my wife and I ride heavy and hard pulling a trailer. We'll do 6-10k/year. I've been through most brands of tires and would like to find a rear that would last more than 6-7k. Is there any car tire that will fit? What's the longest lasting non-car tire I can put on? Seems I've spent a fortune in tires in the 50k or so we've put on riding this bike. Too back breaking to be changing so often. Thanks! J
  22. Hello: I recently purchased a wireless Tire Pressure / Temperature Monitoring System for my '07 RSV which allows me to set alarms for low and high tire pressures and high internal temperature on each tire. I can set the pressure limits easily enough, but I don't know what the normal internal operating temperatures are for the front and rear tires. Does anyone have any information in this regard? I've searched the Internet but nothing of value pops up. Thanks in advance for any assistance provided. Eric S. "alta55rsv"
  23. Pulled the rear wheel to change the tire and considered pulling the gear mounted on the wheel. Got the dust seal off and just about pulled the snap ring....re-read the tech article and realized it was about noisy rear...which mine isn't...so ended up not pulling and greasing it. Anyhow....new E3 mounted and on, pipes on...just finishing my last electrical connection in the fairing and the bike is ready for the weekend....but, See the dust seal still sitting on my tool box How important is it for pavement riding (no gravel)? Can I get by the weekend? a month? Take the damn tire off in this 200 degree garage and put it back on? Thanks for any input
  24. Had a Avon 130 on the front. Changed to a Michelin 2 on the front size 130 also. Put dyna beads in, took weights OFF rim. Now the handlebar shake from side to side and not up and down. Had put the livening links in and had to take them too and it helped. Running 45 psi rear shock, and 5 lbs in the forks, and 40 psi in the front tire. Bead is even all the way away around the tire and is turning in the right direction. What could be causing the tire to shake side to side? also adjusted steering head barring. tew47
  25. While surfing the E-Bay this evening I ran across this tire changer similar to what Harbor Freight used to sell. http://www.ebay.com/itm/pppp-Tire-Changer-for-Motorcycle-GoCart-Trailer-Bike-ATV-Truck-size-4-to-16-5-/310408758673?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4845cdc591 May be just what someone wants & can get without breaking the bank.
