1. I am not a man who harbors a lot of unrealistic expectations; keeping it real just makes real contentment so much more likely. I am often pragmatic to a fault and will go with the flow when others might have made waves. Two weeks ago I found myself at a dealership looking at a 5 year old motorcycle that was really not the one I wanted; the one I was lusting after, but one that fit my needs AND my budget in a way that the one I really wanted won’t until after both my daughters are out of college. Beautiful, and powerful, and with only 5000 miles on the odometer obviously not much used. A small shallow scratch near the lock on the right saddle bag and a smallish dimple in her tank where someone dropped a cell phone were the only things that kept her from looking show-room new. And then there was the label. Right there on the tank where it had been carefully placed all those years ago before the first gas found her carbs. Honestly, I am not at all certain why it bothered me, but at a stop light on my test ride I found myself picking at the corners of it; which is probably not the best thing to be doing before one signs the papers. “Why would someone leave that label there?” I wondered “and how the heck am I going to get it off after all this time?” “Penny”, I named her right there in the show room because she shined like a new one; and for two weeks and over 1000 miles, some touring and some my normal commute, we have gotten to know each other. She is achingly pretty and oh so nice but not the one I thought I wanted and I fear that like two shy people completing a marriage arranged for them as children, we got off an awkward start. And then there was the label… staring at me every mile, reminding me to wear my helmet, picking at the corner of my vision. “Unclaimed”, I decided, the label makes her look unclaimed, as though the first guy who took her home from the dealer did not care enough about her to take the time to carefully peel it off and let her shiny black paint see the sun. For two weeks now, I have absentmindedly picked at it ,of course, and so it was worse than ever, dog eared and sticky. Until today, when after a couple of very nice rides together in the autumn sunshine I finally did battle with that label. After 5 or 6 years it was really not in any hurry to let go, it clung to her paint, just above her cute little dimple, for all that is was worth but I am a very patient man and so 4 fresh terry towels, a hair dryer, WD-40 and elbow grease eventually prevailed. As I took a fresh, clean, towel and removed the last vestiges of that label, it occurred to me that I have claimed her as my own and like that young “arranged” husband looking across the table at his new bride, I have realized that sometimes love does not come the way that we expect it to and that this thing, this shiny new thing devoid of that label, is just the thing I should have wanted all along.
2. Have 2009 RSV with paint problems on the gas tank and fender. It is two toned red & black. It looks like you have rock chips in the paint, but paint was popping off from underneath on red only. Called Yahama to see if they were having a paint problem on the 09s of course they said no. They said to take it to the dealer that you bought it from. So I did. They said they would order me a new gas tank to replace the old one. Last Monday I got the new tank. Took them a day to get the new gas tank on. Now they have ordered the front fender. Don't know when it will get here. They didn't put the badges on the tank. I kind of like it without them. If you have any paint looking problems don't be surprised because it is popping off from underneath the paint. Especially on the newer bikes. Looked like it had the measels. LOL It looks good now. Hal
3. Do anyone had the two clips that attach to the tank that holds the intercom lead that they can part with?
4. I have been given some info on a 2005 Yamaha that they believe is a XV17AS Road Star Midnight. It has 2000 Kms on it (1250 miles), has been sitting for some time as the owner has been ill. The bike is all black with soft bags and a tank cover to match. Can anyone that knows a lot more about the second gen bikes than I tell me if $9,000 cdn is a good price for this. its only :mo money:
5. Last weekend I had to pull my gas tank off, the first time I had done that. In the process I lost the two gray tabs that hold the rear fender in place not knowing they were there. Well, I found the tabs and am in the process of putting them back in but I'm not sure exactly where they are placed since I didn't remove them myself, they just fell out. I thought they would go in the little metal tabs welded on the back of the gas tank, but then they are too wide to go through the slots in the fender, so now I'm not sure how they go ?
6. for those of you who use it you know those who don't shame on you . had a 81 honda cb 650 given to me had not been started in 3 yrs and was buried this year under the 24 inchs of snow we had and then all the snow from the st pieled on top of it .after cking all the wiring and for spark ( everything worked) cleaned gas tank carb floates where frozen fuel running every where . I filled fuel line going to carbs with the magic elixer let it sit over night and the next day filled tank with fuel and tried it . Started first try no float sticking . bike runs fine. now just clen up left. Seafoam does it again. Bill
7. i have my 2007 venture black tank for anyone who wants it.....rt side has good size dent...tank has about 15,000 miles on it.....i need about $25 for shipping.....check ,cash...not setup for credit card or paypal.........first come.... (tried to place ad....never works)
8. And that is an understatement............Was leaving to go to church on my V Star 1300, I cleaned it up a little bit before I left, got ready for church, backed the bike out of the garage, closed and locked the garage door, got back onthe bike pulled in clutch, dropped into first, a faint pop the bike lurched and dies. Clutch cable broke at the adjustment fitting under the tank. This is the second cable that has broken, the first one broke in the same place at 12,000 miles and Yamaha warrantied it.........no 10,000 miles later it does it again. Okay no biggey, I get the Venture out and put the Star away. Venture needs gas, so I stop at a gas station I use very rarely on my way to church. Pump the gas while sitting on the bike holding it upright so I get a full tank..............got distracted for a moment and all of a sudden I feel wettnes and hear liquiid spilling on the ground.........the auto shout off didnt work as it should now I have gas all over the tank cover the engine but worst of all, I am soaked in gas and it feels like someone lit a fire to big Jim and the twins......:crying:.......OUCH Wipe all the gas off the bike and soak up the little inside the filler area, and it feels like a volcano has gone off in my nether reigons.................Its a five mile ride back to the house and I dont know if I can make it without stopping at the first pond I see and jump in..........Call the fire department....................PLEASE. Get home and cant get the clothes off fast enuff, jump into a cold shower and cool my guys off....................WHEW......AAHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! Luckily no permanet damage done to the area, but it sure felt like I was going to be out of commisson for a while.............Didnt really want to go to the hospital and be treated for burns down there.................. Made it to church 45 minutes late, went on our lunch ride and had a really nice day that I thought was going to be shot for me............. So. How was your day................??
9. I have an '09 Venture. Bought it 4 weeks ago with only 2500km on it and now have almost 4400km on it. I've been keeping track of mileage and it has been consistent. Question I have is how far can I go on a tank of gas ? What I'm finding is that : 1) low fuel light comes on about 255km (158.45 miles) - mix of city/highway driving (and I do like to take advantage of the revs on the engine !) 2) with fuel cock still "ON" I can go another 21km (12.8 miles) before the engine starts to sputter and stall 3) if I pull into a gas station immediately after switching to "RES" it only takes 16.433L (3.615 Imp gal, 4.341 US gal) to fill it up (fill so it just touches the bottom of the neck) From the specs on the bike, fuel tank capacity is 22.5L (4.95 Imp gal, 5.94 US gal) with a 3.5L (0.77 Imp gal, 0.92 US gal) reserve (I take it the fuel capacity includes the reserve). So... if the spec says 22.5L and I put 16.433L in to fill it up when I finally switch to reserve, does that mean that there really is a little over 6L of fuel still left ? I was on level ground and on the highway when the engine started sputtering and riding in a straight line. If the "Reserve" is 3.5L does that mean that 2.5L (15 % !!) in the main tank isn't available without sloshing the bike around to get it picked up? If that is the case, is 3.5L really available in the Reserve or is some not picked up as well? Working out the mileage.... I'm getting an average of 47.448 miles/Imp gal or 39.505 miles/US gal - 5.954L/100km Based on a 22.5L fuel capacity does that mean I can expect to go 378km (235 miles) if I run it totally dry ? I like the sounds of that on a touring bike ! (sorry for all the conversions but this is to a mixed measurement forum ! )
10. Ok, before I decided to fix my original tank, I took RandyR up on his offer to sell a gas tank to me. only caveat is that it is a black tank. I just set it on the frame and took some pics, I kind of like it. opinions anyone?? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ solution B is that Jus Monkeying Around member was a big factor in fixing my original tank and that I should have it painted. He offered to pick up supplies and help me do the repair. Well at the Houston Maint Day, we did just that. We fixed the hole and another Hal is going to paint it. I will post that later as it comes along.
11. the pics are not so good, but i hope you get the general idea. ok, so i go to the shop to prep my scooter to make texas maint day coming saturday. I pull off the cover and find a chip coming off the tank and a big stain on the paint. I check for leaking brake fluid, it's clean and dry - so ruled that out. I checked my cover and nothing there. I rub my finger over it and it smears a bit and smells like gas what the heck????? I think to myself. then it dawns on me - i knew from the purchase that the bike was a salvage title. the seller, of course, makes it sound like a fall over, then totaled by INS company. the leak has to be coming from the inside. oh, good grief charlie brown. what next. I drain the tank into a gas can, then i start by pulling away the chip to find body filler. the body filler is, of course, soft and easy to cut off. I find the hole that was ground, repaired, ground and then filled, smoothed and painted. now i have this mess to contend with because who ever did the repair, did not do it for longevity sake. that is my opinion cause it is now my mess. I don't do body work much less gas tank repair. I assume a repair is gonna b much cheaper than a replacement tank. Does anyone here do gas tank repair. Maybe I can get lucky and someone within driving distance ( 8 hours or so) does and wants to take my job after giving me a quote - so what do ya'll think
12. I swapped out the stock shield for the clearview..not sure if this caused this adverse condition or if it was always there. Anyway, I got tired of air blowing up beside the tank hitting me in the chest and helmet (alot of buffeting). I got the knee protectors from Buddy Rich and with the help of a heat gun and some 3m tape, I came up with these. After six months, I love them. They don't block all the air but they do block bout 75% of it, creating a much smoother ride, but still enough air to stay comfortable. They don't block any air to the engine compartment. To give you an example of what I'm talking bout, at 60 mph hold your hands palm down along side of fuel tank in front of your knees....RSV's may not experience this.
13. Jeff; So not to take away from your headlight thread I started this one for the Aux Gas Tank. NO NO the rear end; as in Frame work doesn't have to come off just the tour pac and body & running boards if you have them. The rear end ( pumpkin ) it self may have to be lowered ( basically removed, and sit down with axles still attached like putting in the drive shaft ) to do the welding there, but maybe not too. That could be done with asbestos blankets laid across the rear end. As simple as it looks it was done in a sort of complicated way. Meaning for an installer, it has to come off before the kit can be installed, and they supper locktited the mounts to the tank side, and you have to bend the rubber stand offs to the point of breaking loose to get the tank out of the frame to put the kit on the bike, and then go through it again to install the tank. I was able to break loose the stand offs, and eliminate 90% of that part. I think that there has been a retro fit of a couple from this board if I remember right, but haven't heard too much about it. This board is a little slow with activity compared to other boards, but the Quality of the threads makes up for that.
14. any one have this happen? went out for a short ride as im still healing. was ridding down main street in a little town after a 40 mile ride. Dianne was with me i hit the throtle and poof bike stoped? ok coast over to the wendys parking lot. shut key off turned it back on tank showed one bar? while on side stand. i took it off the side stand it showed 2 bars on the fuel gage. would not start? ok i carry a one gallon gas can in top trunk. gas staion right next to wendys thank god as its hot out today. i got one gallon of gas and the bars didnt move on the fuel gage? hit the starter and vroom it fired right up. went over and filled the tank. bars are at the top. took 4.5 gallons total to fill it thats with the one gallon gas can i allready put in. the petcock is stuck so i dont dare try and move it. from the looks of the petcock it looks like its on RES?. never had this happen before and allways got around 40mpg. when the bike ran good. looks like im now pulling 34 mpg?
15. OK, this could be something that I did but I'll put as much information in here as possible. I have a coolant leak, usually after riding the bike and it gets hot, looks like it is coming from the right side (looking forward of the radiator). I'm having some trouble tracking the leak down. The radiator itself always stays completly full. In fact if the bike is cold and I remove the cap fluid will come out. The temp when riding always stays right in the middle of the green after it warms up. The overflow tank is empty, and I just filled it to the proper level a few weeks ago after I changed the radiator fluid. There was a slow leak from the drain plug but I replaced the gasket under that and it isn't coming from there. The puddle is a little forward and left of where that puddle was! Both ends of the overflow tank hose are connected (assuming it connects right under the cap of the radiator), so it isn't disconnected. Here are the items I think may be an issue, I was wondering if I could get some help on where to start looking. - Overflow tank hose has a crack. - Overflow tank itself has a crack. - When I changed the coolant I wasn't exactly sure if the knob you turn (I believe they called it a drain diverter or something) got put back in the correct spot. I couldn't find the writing they talked about. Not sure if this would cause a leak. Thanks for any help you can give. Let me know if you need some pictures I can go snap some. I'm trying to get everything buttoned up as best I can before our first trip on the bike this weekend.
16. There is a Hopnel tank bib for the RSV on ebay. Its "sold" by big bike parts. I need this item but it wouldnt arrive in time before we leave for Potato Creek. Actually there are several available through various sites once I googled them. Is anyone willing to buy the thing for me, take it to Potato Creek and I would pick it up there and hand over the cash. Its around 55 bucks. Thanks
17. I'm not a beginner at mechanics exactly just new to working on RSV. I haven't done my own maintenance for a long time but there isn't any place close to take the bike any more so...here I go again. OK, now the question. Do you need to remove the tank to check the spark plugs? I was looking to see if you can get to them with the tank on and I didn't see how. I check the service manual and it didn't say to remove the tank. Did I miss something?
18. I have been gone for quite awhile...work, injuries, weather... But now I have the bike, 83 VR, out for the first time since winter. Where to start??? Problems, problems, problems. Didn't have the time or energy so I had a local shop do a much needed valve adjustment. Bike ran pretty good on the way home. Kreem'd the tank when I got home...last years highway shutdown will not happen again. New fuel filter installed, of course. After installing the tank and firing it up I now can not get the bike to run right. Bike idles but wants to stall when given throttle. Feather it quickly and build rpms to 3000+ and it takes off like a rocket. If on a hill it seems to have more trouble wanting to take off from a stand still, no torque. I have previously done the 5bikes washer treatment to the carbs. Diaphrams are crinkled but hole free. I just ran a full seafoam treatment and this did not make a difference... yet. I adjusted the pilot screws from one and a half turns out to three and a half turns to get the bike to be somewhat rideable. I have noticed some cracks in my intake manifolds...done nothing with that yet. Carbs have been sync'd as good as possible. Bike has always had a slight hesitation at throttle but nothing that really bothered me till now. At speed now it seems to be a little rough. Let me just say I know enough about mechanics to cause myself some expensive repairs later. I truely do not know what to look at next. Can anybody point me in the right, logical direction on what to check next.
19. I have an'02 midnight venture can someone out there tell me what the surge tank actually does?
20. So, there I was today riding over to one of my favorite BBQ joints on one of the Texas Farm-to-Market roads doing 70, when I get a face-full of my '83 VR false tank cover. Managed to grab it before it went sailing, and apparently the small ABS "tab" under the gas tank filler cap had failed. It had vibrated forward until it became un-clipped from the front attach point. Good thing I had a roll of duct tape in the saddlebag. Does anyone happen to have a good "permanent" fix for that little sucker??
21. I just purchaased a 1989 Yamaha Venture Royale. My questions are...1. Is there a reserve tank? 2. If there is, how do you activate it? Thanks JC in MN
22. After my 'deer hunting' incident, where the deer's head had wrapped around my forks and put a baseball size dent (about 2" deep) in the right side of the tank, I talked to a couple of body shops and 'paintless' dent repair places. None seemed to want to do the job, so frustrated went on-line and found a couple of ideas. The first item http://www.ehow.com/how_6462615_use-dent-motorcycle-gas-tank.html was using heat and liquid CO2 to pop the dent. Went to Staples and got a 4-pak of dust-off and borrowed the old-lady's hair dryer. After about 3 cans of air the dent had come out at least half way. Then I attacked it with my Dent King kit which I already had. http://www.ehow.com/how_2098332_repair-dent-motorcycle-tank.html Working from the 12 O'clock position and going around a few times (12, 3, 6, etc.) the rest of the dent came out . Saved big $$$'s and got the satisfaction of doing myself .
23. Last Friday (5/28) I rode up to Door Cty, WI for family's annual Memorial Day cookout for my wife's B-Day. Just so happend that Curt (fjr rider) and the Venturer's were camping up there in Bailey's Harbor, so I stopped by to say hi. Around 6:30PM the wife called for me to get home for dinner, so bid the group bye and took off. Was running Rte. 57 across peninsula to Sister Bay and decided to avoid traffic, so jumped on Old Stage road. Had just hit 4th gear @ 60MPH when..WHAM, a couple hundred lb. doe hits me from the left. Held the bars straight, listening to the sound of Crunching metal, then the deer fell away and I brought Matilda to a stop. Got my wits about me and walked back about 1/4 mi. to where the first pieces were on the road. Found the doe about 700 ft. from the point of impact, Very dead and too heavy for me to put on the back saddle (damn, wanted to cook that sucker). Back at the bike, loaded the parts in saddle bag and rode 3mi. to the house (don't they say most accidents happen Saturday morning uncovered her and got the tools out. Pried the front fender tip off the tire, cut turn signal wires, and bent left wind-wing support out a bit. A couple of low speed test runs on our road, all seemed fine so headed to Fish Creek to find the group. Stopped at a winery and was showing the damage, when Steve said, "what about your tank?". The head or front hooves had put a softball sized dent at the tank badges. No wonder my right calf was still hurting!! I'm just amazed how well built these bikes are - no fork problems even after wrapping a deer around them. So...anybody got a good used tank .
24. Has anyone had any experience of moving the drivers intercom plug from the tank? Does it have enough cable to go under the tank near the seat and how do you savely get the plug seating unglued from the tank? Thanks for any help.
25. Anyone have any ideas where to get a tank panel/tuxedo/tie (call it what you will) with a pocket that'll fit a '97 Royal Star Tour Classic?
