1. Came around a curve on the way to work this morning, doing about 45, and saw some turkeys right on edge of road just ahead. A hen flew up and took a low trajectory right across in front of me, there was zero chance of missing it. Caught me right on the throttle side hand grip. Jerked the bar back hard & bike went into a tank slapper for about 10 occilations. Got it to settle down and kept bike upright. Bird did not survive, fingers are a little sore. I have turkey crap across the black tank cover, but no damage I could see to bike. Tweety 1, Turkey 0, we advance to the medal round... Gary
2. Well folks I've been a busy boy these last few weeks building some projects just for the Hannigan trikers here. Those being : 1. A lift adapter so the trike can be used with a conventional ATV motorcycle jack. It's designed & used the same as my Standard & Freestanding lift adapter I sell for the 2 wheelers. The only difference is it's longer and has a 4 point lift support location on the adapter to pick these trikes up. My Sears red jack worked just fine for picking up Ragtop69gs / Jay & Jeanies trike. 2. An auxiliary gas tank system. It will be a complete bolt on system complete with everything needed in a kit form. The kit will consist of a 5.25 gallon tank, electric fuel pump w/ in-line filter, a fuel shut off solenoid, 30amp relay, in-line fuse holder & fuse, a custom made stainless steel switch mount and waterproof rocker switch, wiring harnesses with soldered connections & shrink tube terminals, hoses & clamps as required, a polished stainless steel flip top gas cap with stainless screws, and a full set of instructions with pictures for the install. The tank is made of 16 gauge steel & will be pressure tested as well as sealed using Caswell gas tank sealer. 3. A hitch assembly using heavy wall 1 1/4" tubing. Pics and more info to follow, Larry
3. Ok, been a lot of conversation lately about fuel pumps and now I'm chasing a problem with mine.... me thinks. First of all the bike is in good shape and most possible issues have been addressed in the past. Fuel tank lined with expoxy. Fuel filter and petcock shows clean and free. (Opened the tank to inspect) Fuel lines have all been replaced Tank vent clear and free of obstuctions. Carbs in good working condition and fuel bowl levels at spec. Good fuel flow through system. Air filter clean. Sync done recently. Electrical connections recently checked and found to be clean and sealed. Cooling system clean and working properly. Bike is not over heating. Charging system and electrical working properly and in good condition. Different fuel bought over a week from different stations. The problem only happens when the temps are in the top end of the 90's or over 100. Everything works fine in cooler temps and no problems of any kind. What happens is the bike, at highway speeds (60 - 75 mph) after being ridden for a distance in hot temps just stalls and sputters out. It will cranks right away but needs to sit for a bit before starting again. The first time it happened I wrote it off as a possible vapor lock. The bike had been sitting out in the sun since early morning and I didn't leave work until 2:00 PM when it was 101 degrees out. I only had a gallon and a half in the tank so I figured with the heat maybe I was vaporing. After 15 minutes the bike fired up and I rode home with no furture problems. I did check the vent line at that point. I filled the tank the next morning and ran about 100 miles that day in 80 degree temps and no problems. The next day it did the same thing again with a over half a tank in temps close to 100 again. Same thing. Let it cool down for bit and ran on home. It's done the same things twice more since then in the high temps but I made note that the digital voltmeter was showing a nasty fast drop from the usual 14.2 volts to 13.5 -13.8 right as the bike started to sputter. Not normal. And again today on the Interstate when it was 97 degrees. So knowing everthing I've checked is working as it should, almost, with the sudden drop on the voltmeter just as the bike stalls out I'm starting to question the fuel pump itself. NOTE: I can't say I've seen the volt meter dropping prior to the stalling, only note it as the bike is stalling. Is it possible the pump itself is stalling out do to a heat related failure causing the drop in the volts? It functions properly when cooled off. I can not get the bike to stall while on the stand and letting it run hot. It only stalls hot and under load. Kind of got me scratching my head... Mike
4. hello i will getting my carbs from pinwall tomorrow what all do i need to do before i put them on the bike i will of corse be putting sea foam in the tank first time and i hope that this will fix my proble with the rt rear cycl bumble bee 1999 rsv
5. I am looking for a tank bib for the RSV. Does anyone have one they want to sell? I'd prefer one with the detachable pouch but all others will be considered.
6. I have just completed the test ride after the installation of my aux. fuel tank. All went perfect. Not a problem in sight...or hidden. Of course, I have done this a time or two before, as I have installed aux. fuel tanks on 11 previous bikes, so I kind of have experience doing this. However...this was my first time on a RSTD, so there is always something new...or things to learn. We all know about the stock tank...nothing new there. And if the bike is ridden at a steady and quick pace, it can consume fuel a little faster than I want to have to stop. Therefore...add aux. fuel. The tank I bought is the 5 gallon tank from Tour Tanks. Here is the link to their site: http://www.tourtank.com/TourTanks.html I am 100 % happy with the product, and the additional hardware kit that needs to be bought along with the tank. Everyhting is top notch, no junk here. As you can see by the pictures, I ride a solo bike. In place of the rear seat is a leather rear fender bib, and on top of that is the Yamaha rear fender rack (in place of the rear seat. On top of that rack...I mount a 10" x 18" aluminum rack I got from Aerostich. Then I mounted the Saddlemen bag onto that aluminum rack. All of the leather(fake leather) bag and aluminum rack are through bolted to the yamaha rear fender rack, with 3/8" u-bolts (4 of them) so it is very solid. Then the Tour Tank slides down into the Saddlemen bag...with an extremely snug/tight fit. There is no way that fuel tank is coming out of that Saddlemen bag unless three of us tug with all of our might. The vent hose up next to the filler cap is routed up over the top and far edge of the tank, then down to one of the side pockets of the Saddlemen bag, where I have hidden a catch tank, with secondary vent to the outside of the catch tank. The red petcock on the left side of the solo seat, attached to the yamaha chrome seat rail, works perfectly. I routed the fuel hose to a brass T-fitting that is spliced into the OEM fuel line about 4 inches above where the fuel filter is. The tank I chose from Tour Tank is tank design # 2, meaning it has two exit bungs at the bottom of the tank, one at either end of the bottom of the tank, so that all fuel is drained from the tank, despite cornering. I filled the tank with 2 gallons, filled my regular fuel tank up all the way, then went for a ride. I started out using only the aux. fuel tank, with the main tank turned off at the OEM petcock. The fuel from the aux. tank flowed perfectly, and after 82.7 miles I had used up the two gallongs I put in the aux. fuel tank, and had to switch fuel petcocks on the fly. Simply turned off the aux. fuel tank, and turned on the main fuel petcock, and after a moments hesitation, fuel was flowing again, and zoom... This additional 5 gallon fuel tank "could" give me a total capacity of 10.3 gallons, however I will not fill the aux. fuel tank up all the way, so the max I will put in it is 4 gallons...just to be safe. Even with that additional 4 gallons, I now have a very useable 8.5 gallons, without any concerns for running low. With that capacity, I can run...at speed...for 350 to 400 miles. That is what I am used to, and this will now satisfy my need to go as far as I want to. Take a look at the pictures. If you have any questions, let me know. And to answer the one burning question...my wife rides her own bikes...all set up as solo seat bikes, so I don't need to carry a passenger. Want to give your wife or girlfriend the greatest gift you can...give them the gift of empowerment, by having them ride their own bikes.
7. I just purchased a Venture tank for my RSTD to get the extra fuel capacity for trips. Is there anything special I need to know to swap it? In the pics, it looks like a direct swap. What do I use for a sealer for the petcock? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. R.
8. I added some SF to a full tank yesterday morning, about 5 oz., and later in the afternoon, my buddy riding behind me said he noticed a puff of white smoke or "steam" coming from my left exhaust on a few occasions, particularly on accelerations. I didn't notice any engine misfires or loss of power at all yesterday, and in fact, the bike seems to be running fine. I routinely add 3 to 5 oz. of SF to every 3rd or 4th full tank of gas just for general maintenance purposes. I'm also getting 40 - 43 mpg's on my last several fill up's. Can SF cause this to happen, or should I be checking for something else?
9. So here's the deal; my '06 RSV seems to enjoy leaving me on the side of the road once or twice a year, seemingly without a warning of more than a few seconds. There's been no consistency as to when it happens. I'd had it gone through shortly after purchase last year as it wasn't running well. A new ignition coil along with cleaning the carbs seemed to turn everything around. A month later I was leaving work, almost cold engine, and before even leaving the lot it sputtered and died. Only way I could get anything out of it was to use full choke and it would seem like it wanted to run but would die within 30 seconds or so. After about 10 minutes of trying, it started cleanly and ran great. A month later I was in traffic on a somewhat warm day and it started sputtering at a light and stalled when I tried to take off. The tank had about 4 gallons in it at the time but wouldn't restart no matter what I did. Had it flatbedded to my local Yamaha dealer and darn if it didn't start immediately They had no idea what had happened, especially since they had so recently serviced it. 14,000 miles and zero problems later it did it to me again 2 weeks ago! This time it was about 80 degrees and I had just come off an expressway running at 60 mph and it died seconds after waiting at the exit light. Again, it started after many tries with choke on full as if it was getting very little gas and the choke was "keeping a balance" on the A/F ratio, and has run great the almost 1000 miles since. I've run Seafoam through it, checked the plugs and they look great. Any ideas? I never have old gas in the tank as I ride so much. Even in winter the tank is kept full with ethanol formula stabilizer in it.
10. Just picked up my project for next winter. A true barn find. 1975 Moto Guzzi 850T with 17k miles. Motor turns freely, inside of tank is in OK condition, no dents in tank, forks are straight, frame is solid and rust free, and seat is in good shape. PO put on a Windjammer which is going to have to go. Bought if from a guy that had it stored in his shed for over 10 years. It was his father's who passed in 2001. He was going to get it running but didn't have any time (or ability). It was last started in 2002 or 2003. Will need: Master brake cylinder rebuild Airbox replacement (has pods now) centerstand repair saddle bags either removed or repaired Windjammer removed and headlight moved back to forks With the removal of the fairing, will need turn signals All rubber (grips, peg covers, tires) Repaint and stripe (leaking MC got brake fluid on tank) Replace throttle cables and likely clutch cable Clutch handle NOS exhaust (current is home fabbed) Wish me luck. RR
11. I was riding back from the "big smoke" yesterday and smelled gasoline... started wondering, and then the bike sputtered when I accelerated. I pulled into the first parking lot I could find and as my wife jumped off, she exclaimed, "it's pouring out the bottom!" The fuel was running out as if the tank has a 1/4" hole tapped into it. As I shut her down, (bike, not wife) she stopped dripping. I traced the leak to the carb "overflow" tubes. After pulling off the air cleaner assembly, so I could see what's happening there, I started the bike again. The front right and rear left carbs were leaking out of the little hole on the rim, and then out the tubes. I figured there must have been some dirt in the tank and it has plugged stuff in there. So, I finger plugged the leaking hole in the rim and blew back into the leaking hose... I did this for all four carbs and she fired up and ran nice while sitting there. I did not assemble the air box because it was dark and I was using a limited number of tools (and didn't want to dis-assemble the bike in the mall parking lot) so I tried to run it without the air box... she did not run well - I'm assuming she was getting too much air. My son came down with the trailer and dragged us home - we got home at 2AM... but got here safely. Thank God. So, where do I go from here? Is it time to pull the carbs off and clean/rebuild? If I clean the tank, clean the carbs, and re-assemble will I be ok? She was running real good up until last night... HELP
12. My seat cover is in perfect condition EXCEPT for a split just forward of the seam where it meets the battery cover/false tank. Has anyone found a product to repair these?
13. I stoped and tryed to get some gas at a local station and it was pumping slow I got about 3/4 of a tank and went in to pay and said must be something wrong with your pump and she says oh I will tell the owner when he gets here. I get about 12 miles on the tank of fule and I am wondering if I will even get home. So to work I go on the cycle clean conections all that I can find move the TCI as long as I am at it. Still doent run very well take it for a ride it starts to run better but not like it did. Telling a friend of mine and he says sound like fule filter I just put a new one in a couple of days before I got the gas. So yesterday after checking plugs wires and everything else I could think of I decided to check the fule filter and here it is full of crud brown nasty stuff. And guess where it came from, found out that they let their tanks run empty and thats why it was puming so slow. So another new filter and its runing better but not the same as it was so I am sure that the screen on the petcock is coverd with this stuff and I hope that the tank wont have to be flushed out. Still waiting to talk with the owner I guess that he has been avoiding some other upset people.
14. Hey everybody. I'm just curious if I'm getting good gas mileage on my 83. I'm averaging about 150 miles on a full tank of gas. Is that about average? Or can I do better?
15. Hi, i am interested in a Royal star 96, is not in optimal condition but is cheap. I like challenges but would like to know what are the know problems i can find out so i can look for them. Ive seen that the 99 and up are a little higher (better ground clearence) than the older one, is it possible to rise the older version? i am a little concern about clearance. I live in a high mountain country. Is possible to adapt the air suspension form the newer models... i like that too. Can someone tell me what is the normal MPG that this bike does? how long will a tank last. I usually do large trips and with harleys and they have a 200 miles tank... I appreciate any help given to make my mind about this bike. I also have the chance for a Road Star, but like this one better (less vibration). Thanks!!
16. I've been using Caswells Epoxy Sealer on several fuel tanks since I did my '84 tank a few years ago. I'm happy with the results and the epoxy does an excellent job of bonding to the interior of the tank rusted or not. It's tough stuff. http://www.caswellplating.com/restoration-aids/epoxy-gas-tank-sealer.html I just got an updates from Caswells on a new product, another epoxy sealer, but with a new feature. They have added a red color to the product so you can see the coverage on the inside of the tank, (for what you can see without an inspection camera). It's the same quality product from the original kit so I wouldn't be afraid to use it for any major repair. http://www.caswellplating.com/restoration-aids/epoxy-gas-tank-sealer/dragons-blood-gas-tank-sealer.html?utm_source=MailingList&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=May2012 So it's worth a look if you're in the market for a tank sealer. Mike
17. Sunday after getting the brakes blead, exhaust leak/backfire problem fixed and the rest of the body parts back on it was time to take her out on the road to see how she would do with the new Programmable TCI. So I called and arranged a hook up with RandyR in Dahlonga for the Bear On the Square Festival. (about a 75 mile one way trip) She deffinately had a lot more acceration in all ranges but it was not a smooth acceration. It felt as if the bike was surging or lunging forward as it was cruising and accerating with a jerky reaction. When I would gun it, it the would increase RPM but it felt like the clutch was slipping a little and would have to catch up with the the engine to take off. The gas consumption was rapid. Since the bike had been sitting for about a year with an empty tank and the new gas in that first tank and was mixed about 3 gal of gas to 1/2 can of seafoam I'm not discounting the possibility of some moisture in the tank and fuel system. I'm thinking I need to run a few tank full of gas to see if it improves. While in Dahlonga we did hook up Randy's carb tune and the carb sync was pretty close to where it should be. The second tank of gas without sea foam got 94 miles to 3.699 gallons of gas. Monday ride to work and back (20 miles each way was a little better but not 100%. Now on the third tank. My next steps are to replace in lin fuel filter and fresh fluid and blead on the clutch line. Any other ideas.
18. I believe I want to remove the tank badges and whiskers from the fairing. I have already removed the sticker from the tank and the 'Yamaha' from the trunk. For those I used WD-40 to get the glue off, then used wax to clean up the mess that the WD-40 just smeared around. First off, are the tank badges just double sided taped on? Or, am I going to have to fill holes like in the old days? Secondly, is there something out there better for getting the glue off than WD-40, that won't hurt the paint? WD-40 and wax does do it, but it takes alot of elbow grease too. And lastly, is there and easy was of getting these chrome items off without damaging them? - Just in case I want to put them back on at a later date. craigr
19. Could someone post a picture of their MKII Tank Rack. I'd like to see what it looks like to see if I might want one someday. Also any undesirable opinions of it would be helpful.
20. Pulling the tank tomorrow to replace the air filter and possibly attach new horns. I've chucked the plastic clamshells they came in but they are I believe Wolo Blasters(?) Hi and Lo note. I don't like the area the old one came from. To "hey notice the blk plastic chunk" for me. While I've got the tank off I'm going to check out behind the plastic cover. Can anyone give me a heads up what is under there and if there would be space for two of these horns? I'm thinking of hitting Radio Shack and getting some black metal outdoor speaker mesh and cutting rectangular holes so I can aim them outward. One on each side. Something along the lines of this....(I will accept compliments on my ninja MS Paint skills, but don't feel like you HAVE to. )
21. So I installed 1.5" riser on the handle bars today. All the lines look like there is plenty of play in them. I was not able to re install the rubber mounts for the fairing. Have to think about that for a while before I modify them. Any suggestions are appreciated. The one other problem I found is the mounts now hit the plastic cover on the gas tank by the key. They don't touch the ignition but do move the plastic. I am looking for another one that I can modify. Preferably in Black but any color will do. if anyone has an extra they are willing to part with please let me know. Thanks much
22. Not complaining, just wondering. Does a good dose of seafoam affect mileage? I suppose I had 1/3 to a 1/2 more than the recommended mix. I measured 40 mpg on a 2 tank ride yesterday out to the Oregon coast and back around to home. Great day! http://db.tt/H451XZov
23. Been out riding all day and at one stop I made a guy pulls in on a Valkyrie with a very nice tank cover with two hard closeable "pockets". He did not know where the tank cover came from because it was on the bike when he bought it. I took pictures of the tank bag and label but the label didn't come out to good. Just thought it was a good idea with the "pockets" on the tank bag.
24. Anyone here ever hear of a gas tank building so much pressure in it that it actually spread apart causing the front of the tank to spread out and pop off the front mounts?I parked my Venture and my son's Venture outside the shop yesterday temp outside was 90 degrees and my son's tank had swelled up and spread apart. There is about a two inch gap between the tank mount and where it bolts to the frame. The guy he bought it from told him if he is riding and it starts to run like crap to just push down on the gas cap and it will quit running bad and that worked he said he kept getting a strong gas smell and so he thought a relief valve was installed wrong so he took it off and turned it the other way.I am guessing that was a vent and him turning it around caused the pressure to not vent out.Does anyone know where that vent valve may be located and where a guy may find a good used tank? Thanks
25. OK, Where do you think the gas went?? I went out to the shed today to start getting the bike ready enough to ride to go and get the new tires mounted. After a winter of sitting in the dark and the cold in the shed all alone, it did not want to start. It turned over just fine. But no so much as a fart. Hmmmmmm Then looking at the dash I notice that there are no bars showing on the gas gauge. Now when I parked it for the winter I filled the tank to the top with fresh gas with some stabil and some seafoam in it. I even got the gas from way up nort so that it would not have alky in it. So I opened the tank filler and sure enough, completely empty. There is no sign of gas having been on the floor, and the oil level is normal. So I added a gallon of fresh gas and it started right up. Benn watching it and still no drips on the floor. I don't think it could have been the neighbors, the shed is locked, the tank is locked, and a jug of gas next to the bike is still full. Where do you suppose 5 gallons of gas could have run off to????
