  1. Got the bike last week. Running ok, horrible gas mileage. Just didn't feel right. Previous owner supposedly had the carbs rebuilt. Found that one of the carbs idle air screw was closed. Set all to 2 1/2 turns and gained substantial power, but sluggish at wot. Starts great idles fine, but something still seems off. Changed plugs and wires, no change. Where I was at yesterday; gas mileage is horrendous, wot is fluttering, #3 cylinder exhaust temp 450ish and the rest 150-190ish. Starts easy, idles easy and runs down the road fine. Feels like I can drive it anywhere. This morning I decided to pull the carbs. Boy it was a pita, throttle cables at the carb were a nightmare and reinstalling the cables and the vacuum line from engine to the air box was a royal pain. Well, looks like I got half a rebuild. Looks like new diaphragms (or nice old ones), new air jets etc... The wet side was pretty nasty, but got it all cleaned out. Put it back together and started it and it now idles at 3500+ without the choke. I can hold the throttle closed and will drop to 1500, let go back up. When I put my hand slamming the throttle it barely moves. Out side cable has slack, not sure about the inner cable. Before I put the carbs on I tried to get all butterflies near closed and the same as best as my old eyes could so whatever sync that was on it is long gone. Ideas on what I can do? I don't have a sync tool, but have a single vacuum gauge. I thinkmit might be an issue with the inner throttle cable. I tried single gauge sync yesterday before I decided to pull the carbs and I had real bad flutter in the gauge so I limited flow and saw only about 1mm of vacuum in all carbs. Hopefully that changes tomorrow. I'm real tight on money right now, so I won't have a sync tool for another couple of weeks.
  2. Have a 84 Royale that i don't think is running quite right. Would also like a member to take it for a spin before and after the sync. New owner and not too familiar with the bike. Tks Rob
  3. Got my new to me 2000 with 31k last fall and am needing to check valves and a carb sync (anyone in the area that may be able to help with the sync). Do you think these things could help with the little bit of popping I have on downshift. I also have been getting 32-35mpg no matter how i drive. I am one who likes speed but even when i have tried to drive easy 35mpg is all. Would there be more of a carb issue than the sync, etc. Thanks for your thoughts, Larry
  4. some advice needed, i used a home made manometer to sync my carbs. i set them all to the front carb. on the left side, is this a very dependable way of doing a sync, the manometer seems to be very sensative just touching the screws with a screwdiver affects it. bike seems to be running well revs up fast then right back to idle. what do you all think. Lee
  5. the verdict is in on carb sync rpm's... i usually set mine at fast rpm 2000-2500 and it always ran great and got good mpg's 39-43. so after reading some threads about doing it at 1000 rpm i tried that and well my mpg's kinda sucked, 35-38 was all i could get. so i went back to hi rpm sync and went back to 42mpg on the first tank. i figure 90% of my riding is hiway at 65 mph so why not set carbs to that.. i will admit the throttle response was a bit better at 1000 rpm but top end and fuel mileage suffered. anywho for what its worth those are my results. all thats on 89 octane.
  6. Any one near Raleigh have the carb sync tool and wouldn't mind helping/showing me how to sync the carbs on a 08 venture. Let me know Thanks, Melvin
  7. Would this be OK to sync the carbs? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300529194899&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT Where can I get the Yamaha engine tach, part #YU-08036-A, 90890-03113 Thanks, Melvin
  8. Carb sync question? Now before yesterday I haven't done it, and found it to be really easy with the carbtune First experience with that too, great product. Now for the question of the day. Not having a tach, but a 9/8's deaf ear,,, I set the idle with the idle set on the right side to what I thought was or felt like 1000R's +- of course. Preceded with the sync, which went well. During one of the rev-up blips I noticed that the tubes would rise to the top, and stop at about 3/4, then fall back to where they were. So just for the heck of it I held what I thought was between 2500 & 300 and looked at the carbtune. It was rock steady, and indicated that #3 & #4 were a bit higher than the left side ??? ( I was having a little trouble getting them together ) So I run the set up to about that level of RPM's. Then adjusted the right side, and resync'd the four to flat. Took about 1 min for that. Dropped it back down to 1000+- and did the Blip, several times, and they were flat and even. Any thought here on that. It ran well for the test ride, but it was seemingly running well before the sync, and after I got all 4 hitting again.
  9. Well with a little guidance from Art I managed to sync my carbs today. Here's my results. 1) No more popping at idle or at deceleration. 2) Less gas fumes at idle. 3) Much, Much smoother accelerating and at highway speed. Before it had a vibration through the bars and the seat. I can't say it's any quicker, maybe just alittle. All and all the carb gauges are right up there as one of the best tools I've ever brought and I was amazed how easy it was once I learned how to use the gauges.
  10. Well I'm in the process of checking the sync of my carbs. I have vacume dial type gauges. 1) First I got her warmed up good to the point the fans kicks on 2) next I removed the rubbers tips from the intake. 3) hooked up the hoses from the gauges to the intakes. Here's where I'm lost. The needle on the gauges will not settle they flop back and forth like a hummimg bird in flight. What should I do of look for!!
  11. I've got a set of vacume gauges ordered to sync the carbs on my RSV. All the help threats say to set the idle at 1000rpm. How is this done without a tach?
  12. hello everyone, I have a problem with my 2000 venture. I just got the bike a few weeks ago. It was running ok but not perfect. and so i pulled off the carburetors and cleaned all the jets which were clean. i ran seafoam through it for 2 tanks. i found 2 slider diaphrams with holes in them. so i replaced them and put the bike all back together and now it is backfiring out of right side exhaust pipe. i had a problem with the right front pipe cold at idle. so i pulled the carbs back off and checked them again and all looks to me ok. so i tried to sync the carbs and i can sync 3 of the four. i am using a carbtune sync tool and the right front carb has full vacuum all the time. i can adjust the left side and right rear cylinder. i am not sure why i have full vacuum all the time. i drove the bike today and it runs great full power (surprised me on how much power the bike has) but if you start the bike and crack the throttle alittle. it will pop and backfire out the right tail pipe. but im at a lose here and not real familiar with multi carb bikes. my other bike is fuel injected. any help would be appriciated. thanks mike
  13. I have had for 15+ years a mercury sync stick. Lately during sync's on my venture, I have noticed a 'clear' substance, of different amounts, rises in the tubes above the mercury, and got me wondering when I sync'd, lineing up the mercury line, if I was really in true sync-ie:is the clear substance changing the vacum level imposted on the mecury? So today I decided to check calibration, went to fish store an got 5 way hose adapter, and applied vacum with pump up mityvac. My mercury lines are off a little +-.5", but more interesting, I had to apply continous vacum, as vacum bleed off fast, and was unable to hole mercury at a constant level to be sure where mercury was really at. Considering opening mercury tank and removing the clear substance, and vacum test all the lines/tubes. Q. Is it normal for sync sticks to bleed vacum? Supposedly thru the liquid mercury pool
  14. Well here is a continuation of bringing my scoot up to my standards of performance. This weekend Skydoc and me performed the following: 1. Carb diaphragm replacement (21 years and 30K miles) 2. Needle Valve Shim (Interested to see how much this can help) 3. Carb sync 3. Clutch diaphragm spring upgrade (because I was getting some slippage) I can honestly say I was shocked how much the carb tune-up helped. No vibrations at idle and silky smooth cruising down the highway. Overall throttle response is much better (probaly because the carb were so far out of sync). I suspect my fuel mileage will increase too and I am anxious to see the results from a month of driving. I will report back. The clutch spring upgrade will have to wait for an honest assessment as I need to get my seat to Rick for modification and it is raining and will do so most of the week. I want to personally thank Skydoc for cruising down and helping me get a handle on some of my gremlins and for teaching me a thing or two about the black art of carbs. This forum is blessed with so many great folks and I am honored to be a part of it.
  15. I have an IPOD with a number of songs on it and the wife has the Shuffle with fewer songs on this. She would like to get a few songs off my IPOD to her Shuffle but I'm not sure if or how this can be done. Can I open my i tunes and unclick all of the songs then let her choose the ones she wants then hook hers to sync?
  16. Several months after receiving my Carbtune, I finally took the time to sync my carbs. MAN what a difference. No more backfiring when letting of the gas and runs so much smoother!!! Freebird, thanks for the detailed write up!!
  17. I know there is already another "cheap carb sync" thread but I had a little time at work today to make a .pdf and I'm sure there are some here that don't know that there is an option. The Carbtune is still an easier way but if you like to tinker and would rather spend the money you save on something else then this is the way to go. And I like this style better than the yardstick and tubing style because there is no chance of sucking any liquid into the engine. $10 dollar carb sync
  18. Is there anyone near Lancaster or Harrisburg PA that would be willing to help me with my first carb sync?
  19. We own a RSV and it's now time to start doing my own maintenance (no more local dealer). So I'm buying the tools to do a carb sync and I start thinking about my Suzuki M95/ MS. Do we need to sync the carbs on our V twin's? I've never seen a post about that.
  20. I ordered Morgan Carb Tune (Thanks to Sky Doc), I had my Yankee buddy sync my carbs back in October and they need it again. I didn't have the nerve to ask him to come to Zebulon, NC (he lives in Pa.) to sync the carbs again so I called him, found out what kind he had and ordered them. When they come in I'll read the instructions, sync the carbs and hang out my mechanics sign. I alredy have a jack and Carbon Ones adaptor for the jack; what else does someone need?
  21. I decided to sync my carbs today since I have noticed a little roughness and it's been about a year since my last sync. As I was hooking up I remembered a post from last year where someone asked a question about syncing at cruising rpm or a higher rpm than idle speed. (I haven't been able to find the thread.) Anyway I decided to sync at 2300 rpm, just because it felt about right. I've got to say, it seems smoother than it was the last time. Does anyone else do it this way or what do you think?
  22. I got a Carbtune from a member last winter (it was brand new). Paid less than $100. Used it once on my scoot and last night sync'd a buddies bike. Cost him a 6-pak of beer and a short trip to my place. Took me less than 15 minutes. I'd say I'm already ahead of the game by a 6-pak. Probably would have cost $100 at the stealer's. Those of you who've taken your scoot to a dealer for a sync ... what did it cost? (curious to know)
  23. Pappa Bear

    MD

Back home from MD Oberlin, Thanks again to the Nelsons for opening their home and pulling off another wonderful day. Every year I get to meet new friends, find new ideas for the scoot, and finally felt I had learned enough from everyone here to work on a couple bikes today! ( Note to self, next year bring portable shade and folding chairs for more sit and talk time! ) My friend also passes along thanks for the gentleman that sync the carbs on his VStar, he says it runs alot better now and he owes you a beer! Hope eveyone has a safe trip home.
  24. When #3 pulls so much vacuum that it pulls the fluid to the top, will A, B or C screw help get it to stop? Yanno, so I can start syncing them. I am trying to sync my carbs and I know they are way out of sync, I sure see why the dial gauges would be a better choice over fluid ones in this situation.
  25. I have 08 RSTD attempting to sync the carbs useing carbtune #1&2 (left side) the vacume on both are bouncing up and down like crazy and when I rev they peg to top? 3&4 (right side are steady? Am I missing something??
