  1. 2007 Second Gen with 100000km on it. I have purchased new front and rear wheel bearings/seals and new swing arm bearings/seals. Plan on replacing all of them this winter. Does anyone have any experience or tips on how to remove them. Thanks in advance. Jim
  2. Just wanted to extend a big public thanks to Playboy for his excellent tech article on repacking the swing arm bearings on the Royal Star Venture. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=709132#post709132
  3. Thanks to Vincent, AKA: Playboy, for this EXCELLENT tech article. Packing Swing Arm Bearings 1. Remove the rear wheel as you normally do and your halfway there. 2. Drain the final drive and remove the speed sensor wire and four acorn nuts and simply pull out final drive and drive shaft. This is a great time to catch up on a lot of those little maintenance items. . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga1.jpg 3. Un clip the speed sensor wire from the swing arm and remove the clamps from the brake line. So you don’t have to hunt for them later re insert the clamp bolts back into the swing arm finger tight. Just allow the caliper to hang over out of the way. Be sure and check pads for even wear. 4. Now its time to remove the shock and the dog bones or leveling links. Before removing top bolt from shock remove seat and right side cover. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga2.jpg 5. Un clip the shocks vent line located beside battery on right side. Then remove round black plastic cover where you add air to rear shock ( it just pops out ) http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga3.jpg 6. Remove the nut from the valve stem. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga4.jpg 7. Now just work the vent line and air line down from top and pull out top bolt from shock. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga5.jpg 8. To remove Y pipes you will need to remove left side cover also. Under the lower section of the Y pipe loosen clamp closest to the rear. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga6.jpg For the section attached to rear cylinders you can loosen that clamp as well or remove the two nuts on the flange going into head . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga7.jpg Remove the bolt where the mufflers slide on . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga8.jpg 9. Now you can just work the Y pipe out and to the rear. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga9.jpg 10. Next pop off the chrome covers on both sides. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga10.jpg you will notice a bolt head on the left side. 30mm I think remove this bolt from the left side . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga11.jpg This bolt requires 72 ft/lbs on re installation. 11. On the right side you will notice a Allen head bolt with locknut loosen or remove nut then remove bolt . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga12.jpg This bolt only needs 5.1 FT/lbs of torque. Locknut requires the 72 ft/lbs. Don’t worry about the swing arm falling out when you remove the bolts. Now you can work the swing arm out from under the bike with just a wiggle. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga13.jpg The rubber boot protecting U joint should come out with it . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga14.jpg 12. Place the swing arm in a vice with drive shaft side down. Pull of the rubber boot so you can see the back side of the right side bearing. Insert the left side bolt from the inside. http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga15.jpg Using a wooden dowel rod tap out the bearing and seal. This will allow minimum distortion to seal so you can re use it . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga16.jpg 13. I used a seal puller on the right side seal because I had one but working carefully with a screw driver or very small pry-bar you can get that seal out with out much distortion. 14. Inspect bearings and races for pitting or wear marks I doubt you will find any unless this has been neglected for a very long time. My bike was @ 30k and had some grease still on bearings Probably just what the factory put on them. 15. Re-pack your bearings with a good quality grease. Insert the right bearing and reinstall seal flip over the swing arm and repeat for left side. 16. Reattach the rubber boot and work the swing arm back up into the bike. Don’t worry about the trying to get the boot back on just yet. Just get it in there where the swing arm bolts will be close to lining up. Lift the swing arm up and slide something under it to support it. . http://www.venturerider.org/Swing%20Arm/swinga17.jpg 17. Reinstall both bolts just enough to get the threads started good and then work the rubber boot back over the U joint. Long handle needle nose pliers and a monkey hook are real handy here. 18. Tighten both swing arm bolts. The left bolt must be tightened first. Remember right side is only 5.1 ft/lbs and locknut is 72 ft/lbs. 19. Everything else goes back in reverse order. Don’t forget to lube those pivot points on the shock while your there. Something that works well for me when it comes to reinstalling final drive and drive shaft is that I pull the driveshaft off the final drive, put the bike in gear, I then insert a large Allen wrench into the hole of the driveshaft where the spring fits for a handle and install the driveshaft into the U joint. You can turn the gear on the end of shaft to determine that your in the U joint and not beside it. Hope this helps because it is not the dreaded job I thought it would be. Could have done it in a afternoon but it was a 100 degree day and trying to take pics on all the steps took some time. Vincent aka PLAYBOY
  4. I have a 2009 royal star touring deluxe and noticed that the swing are when on my lift has about a .003-.005 side play on the swing arm. The factory manual says there is not supposed to be any. Has anyone had this issue and if so what is the proceedure to take the side play out.
  5. So I am pulling the rear wheel for a tire change and once the wheel is off I am checking the swing arm, shock etc. WHen I pick up on the swing arm, there is up and down slop where the bolt goes through the top shock mount. Bolt is tight, its like the mount hole in the shock is too large. I would figure this to be a near zero tolerance fit where the bolt passes through. Sufficient slop that you can make impact noise with it if you push up and down slightly on the swing arm. Amounts to about 1/8 inch movement up and down at the axle just from the slop in the bolt. Anyone else seen this before? OEM shock 22,000 miles. There is also oil on the bottom of the bellows. Still holds air and no excessive bouncing I can tell, but likely not long for this world. Thanks, RSTDdog
  6. Finally went on my 1st Patriot Guard mission today. Got rained on too, but it was worth it. It felt great to honor a Brother, and his family. Glad we could be there for them. Been a member for over a year and a half, but between working swing shifts, and all the short notices, I haven't made one until today.
  7. Does anyone use this, or do you think it will work on my 2001 RSV? http://www.harborfreight.com/motorcycle-swingarm-rear-stand-65620.html
  8. I might be able to get a 1985 venture with 60,000 miles on it for about $800. Was curious to know if this year bike has that problem with the weld breaking by the swing arm that I have read in a couple of posts and if the bike is actually worth buying or should I look for a later model?
  9. I'm trying to figure out how to check my steering head for adjustment on a 2nd gen. Right now it seems to not stay anywhere I put it and will swing from side to side bouncing off the stops.
  10. Just curious...mostly from people that have had this done at the dealer (stealer). They also changed out a back tire at the same time... So what is a customary charge at a DEALER for this service? I'm only interested in what was charged for the swing arm bearing lube. Thanks.
  11. Should I even worry about this for now, or just squirt some kinda spray lube on these spots (Swing Arm) ? I have 12,300 mile on my bike. I have removed the rear wheel and I am going to grease the main gears on the shaft and wheel and the fingers in the wheel (third time doing this, but finally with the Honda Molly 30 this time. Hard time finding it here). Are there supposed to be factory grease fittings on my 07 Tour Deluxe at the swing arm ? Anything else I should do while the rear wheel is off and bike is up ? I will clean and wax the hidden areas also while everything is off. Going back to garage to start cleaning the wheel and begin to grease. I am also changing oil and rear diff grease again. I have changed the rear diff grease twice already in the last 12,000 miles and three yrs and the oil & filter every 4000 miles. Be back in a little bit to see what you all think...... Update; did not see any grease fittings there in the swing arm. So maybe next yr at Freebirds Maintenance Day ??? Mmmmmmmm . Maybe just maybe the grease fitting mod would be doable. Now that would be great. Back to the garage.. *update 8:12 pm - had some company to come, got the diff oil changed and now draining the engine oil. Surprised no one has any info. The rear splines are all cleaned and greased with the Honda molly. Be back later, off to the garage again. Man I love that Bike lift. I got a steal of a buy on a new Harbor Frieght, one of the big red jacks that jack up the whole bike, sweeeeeet. Using along with the stand that I purchased from some one here a while back. Thanks in advance...... Fuzzy
  12. On the Gen II is the swing arm adjustable left to right? I have installed a Tri Wing trike kit and when the drive shaft is lined up, the diff is offset about 1-1/8".
  13. Does the rear fender need to come off to svc the swing arm? I've never done this part of the maintenance.
  14. When ya trike a Venture do you use the swing arm? I was thinking of trying to find a way to install grease zerks in the swing arm so it doesn't have to be disassembled to grease the bearings. Does anyone have a 2nd gen rear swing arm that they would like to donate to the project. I would write an article and document the steps taken with pictures for our technical library. Any takers? Steve
  15. :confused24:OK,I just finished servicing the final drive on my 99 RSV.I used instructions I down loaded from this site, everything worked out just fine until I noticed that my brakes are not mounted the same way as the brakes in the pictures in the instructions.my rear calipers are mounted below the swing arm.Ever picture and diagram i have seen shows the caliper mounted above the swing arm.my mounting bracket is totally different.everthing hangs below the swing arm.Can anyone explain this????
  16. OK the pimping of the Hannigan is in full swing. Here's what got done this weekend...
  17. I read on here about greasing the four bolts in the rear shock swing arm bushings. If I pull these bolts out one at a time and grease, does everything stay in alignment for reassembling? This would be doing it while on side stand.
  18. For those of you that have replaced/repacked the Swing Arm bearings, did you replace the bearings seals or were you able to somehow got them out without destroying the seals? If you somehow got out, how?
  19. Tore the swing arm apart on my 84 VR tonight and found out I need the middle bushings...the ones near the shock attachment... do they still make those anymore? checkede a couple places online and they said backordered.. Hoping to find some fast. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. Clay
  20. I need some help on the MKI to MKII brake upgrade. My rear swingarm is different on my 83 compared to my 88 donor bike The pin that the caliper bracket slides onto is a different dia. between the two models. The 83 has a smaller dia. pin on swing arm that matches the original caliper bracket. The 88 has a larger pin that is welded to the swing arm, and it matches the 88 caliper bracket. The 88 bracket, when put on the 83 swing arm flops around. What am I missing here. Bracket at top of picture is 88, bottom is 83. Hole is also slightly elongated in 88 bracket, by about .080". But there is no obvious signs of wear or fatigue. Hole is longer front to back than top to bottom. The holes are the same center line distance, picture is distorting this . Gary
  21. Hi to all, Just had my rear tire replaced and something does not look right. I remember seeing a nut and lock ring on the right swing arm, can't be sure but not feeling safe riding. Any help would be appreciated. Screaming red

  23. How does one tell if the swing arm is damaged? I also cant get grease to go into one fitting. Took it off cleaned it out but still grease wont go into fitting.
  24. any one going through st. louis on the way to pork in the pines. if so, i would like to ride along if i can swing going. i hate to ride that far alone. bill
  25. The bushings that connect the upper swing arm to the lower are loose on the swing arm. When I look up the parts on line it looks like they are 2 pieces, an outer and an inner bushing. How do I get the outer one (collar) out of the swing arm? They are worn so much that the bushing wobbles inside.
