  1. Come and listen to my story about a man named Jed . . . no, wait, wrong story . . .sorry (and appologies to Flatt - or maybe Scruggs). This story is about how glad I am that I have a functioning AIS system on my RSV. My bike has been running perfectly, no popping or anything else odd, but when I had it all torn down last Saturday to check the valves, I thought it was a perfect time to go ahead and replace the plugs anyway. It was a little early for me with only about 15,000 miles on them, but I had the old ones out, so why not? Well, on the 200+ mile ride home from Tom's place, I was getting a lot of loud popping and bangs rolling through the small towns. Bummer! You can probably imagine how disappointed this made me - here I had just done major work on the bike and put in new plugs and all - I expected to be getting about 150 miles to the gallon and roll through town to cheering crowds! But alas, instead of basking in the adoration of pretty women and admiration from all the wannabe bikers, I found myself having to hide my face in shame. Now the odd thing is, I didn't notice anything else wrong with the bike - gas mileage might have been down just a tad, but considering the 105 degree heat and high speeds I was running, it wasn't really lower than normal. And I had zero problems hitting an indicated 100 MPH passing a couple of long strings of cars, so all four jugs had to be hitting OK, right? But there is no denying the evidence - popping from the exhaust on these bikes absolutely proves something is wrong with the way the fuel is burning. So today I finally drug my rear out to the garage to check things out. I fired the bike up and began checking how fast the header pipes were heating up with my fingertips, and it was obvious that the RF (#4) pipe was different. The other three were too hot to keep my finger on for more than a second or two within 15 seconds of starting the bike, but not #4. It was fairly warm, but not burning. Even tho these were brand new plugs, I pulled it and put an old one in - problem solved! And THAT's why I am so tickled my AIS is working - without the warning signs from the exhaust popping, I would have almost certainly ridden the bike with that bad plug in there for 20,000 miles or so before I accidentally fixed it during the next major service. The interesting thing is that this was the EXACT same symptom Ponch had with his bike up at Don's maintenance day - same cylinder, same symptoms, same fix. And his only real indication that something was wrong was the popping when he tried to reconect his AIS system! Goose
  2. I read this a little while ago and thought some folks might enjoy it. I thought it was really cute. Little patriotic squirrel. I clicked on the link to the original story because I had to just see if there was a pic and there was. http://www.thetimesherald.com/article/20090530/NEWS01/905300301&referrer=FRONTPAGECAROUSEL Margaret
  3. Here is a great reason to NOT totally rely on a GPS... especially if you are a moron! News story
  4. For those of you interested in music and/or riding, I thought you might enjoy this story written by Neil Peart, the drummer for Rush. He references a couple of visits to Deal's Gap, as well as his visit at Two Wheels Only in Suches GA, a place that we have visited a couple of times on our M&Es. Here's the link: http://www.neilpeart.net/news/index.html Be sure to also check out some of the previous stories about his motorcycle adventures... TERRY
  5. First of all, this is NOT a political thread. I have always kept up with the news, whether it is the evening news, 24 hour news, radio or reading the local paper. I have spent many hours eating lunch in my car parked somewhere listening to Paul Harvey. I am now getting to the point that I can not stand to be around the news. I will still listen to Paul Harvey(or his stand-in) because at least there will usually be some up lifting news, but everything else is just more and more depressing. It is stuff like this that rips me, headline; "Local Company Looses 2 Million Dollars!" When you read the story, it does tell that company actually made a fairly good profit, BUT, their profit was 2 million dollars less than what was predicted a year ago. It is like, how bad can we make the news look in the headlines, at every opportunity? Then you got the story like I heard this morning as I was getting ready to go to work; Woman spends $155,000 to get her dog cloned. Which reminds me, has anyone else heard what is the latest going on with the PETA bunch? RandyA
  6. First, I think everyone should read Dragonriders post in the inspirational section, titled "sack Lunches". Second, We had 10 members of an Army unit earn 10 Silver Stars in Afgan combat (a military record). The story is here: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,466404,00.html Knowing we have men the likes of these out there getting the job done.....I'm so proud of these young men..
  7. According to Wikipedia, a legend is a narrative of human actions that are perceived both by teller and listeners to take place during a motorcycle rally and to possess certain qualities that give the tale some sense of authenticity. These narratives are centered around pictures that are taken by attendees and explained in online posts to those who were not eye witnesses to the event but like to live their lives vicariously through those that did attend. Well, a legend has begun around a "life form" seen in a pond by only a few people who have attended at Maintenance Day celebrations in Oberlin, Ohio. How it started...many, many, many, many moons ago, one Canadian (our now dearly departed, Charlie) had a camera during one sighting (maybe the first), and posted what he tagged as the pond monster, or was it the Nelson Ness Monster...I forget...but given that he had a reputation for photoshopping his pictures, and was considered by many native Canadians not to be of a sound mind, his posts lacked some credibility, and consequently many ventureriders didn't believe what they saw in his posts...and that's how legends get started. Since some rumours have circulated that I have a special connection to the monster, (likely because I am one of only a hand full of people who have dared the depths of the pond), and since I am one who lives his whole life in the pursuit of educating the masses, I have taken it upon myself to investigate these ULFs (unidentified life forms) and set the record straight once and for all. I am currently in the process of writing the TRUE story, I am gathering evidence, I am waiting for pictures to arrive, I am purchasing software to detect photoshopping, I am checking with my sources (only credible eye witnesses) and I will submit the final product when it is done. If you don't post anything under this post my story WILL be posted directly under this one and it will be bumped for all to readwhen I have determined the truth ; however, if you can't wait for my story and you start your own dribblings below about what you heard (or saw) as is already happening in other threads, then my story will be buried in subsequent pages (which may be best anyways) and the true story of the pond monster may end up being lost forever...
  8. This is for anyone who was stationed or lived at Camp Lejeune between 1957-1987. Evidently there was some sort of chemical in the drinking water during this time. The Marines are sending out letters, but just in case you haven't heard yet thought I'd pass this on. I saw the story on our local news so I looked for info. I know we have some retired Marines on here. Just thought I'd pass it along. https://clnr.hqi.usmc.mil/clsurvey/ Margaret
  9. I want to cover the drive shaft, looked @ maybe using a chrome exhaust plate with clamps behind it but haven't committed to that yet ,thought about having it all chromed, but my latest experience with chromers hasn't been so good (whole other story) but I was wondering has anyone tried anything or saw something that might work that one spot has been bothering me for a while so I gotta chrome it
  10. Okay, here's the latest story in this never-ending saga of my bike: The parts that haven't been returned were in a van that was stolen. I guess he was just too embarrassed to tell the Yamaha dealer who had been trying to contact the painter 30 times a day since July. Now, the dealer tells me that he's waiting for the painter to give him some money so that he can order a new fairing and cowlings for me. I told the dealer to find out how long it is for delivery, to order the parts, and when they come in I will pay him the $2200 I owe for the original paint job. Any costs over that can be dealt with between him and his painter. I'm waiting for a reply from the dealer. If he declines that offer I will be forced to go get a lawyer -- something that I'm loathe to do, but may have to. Man, I'm tired of this mess. I just want to get the bike back together so that I can ride next year. Anyway, that's the latest news in my tale of woe. chuck
  11. Evidently the cops chased this guy and he tried to jump the draw bridge while it was opening. Not too bright. Here's the story. I thought it was pretty funny. I guess he watched too many movies where this worked. http://www.wavy.com/global/story.asp?s=8978726&srvc=leadstory Margaret

  19. Let me tell you a story about a man named Jed .. . oh, wait, wrong story... Let me tell you a story about suspension air pressure on an RSV... Many of you may remember that I crashed my 05 last summer when brand new tires slid out from under me in a curve. I picked up a barely used 07, but my cornering has never felt quite as good as it did on the 05 - nothing really wrong, but I didn't seem to hold a solid line in the big sweepers, and I sometimes found myself fighting the bars in the tight ones. I just assumed that was still some residual nervousness from my crash that I had to work through. Not so. I kept forgetting to to check the pressure in the forks, just assuming it was 0 (the way it comes from the factory. Even though I have my pump with me, I never think about it untill I am riding. Well, yesterday morning I finally remembered to check it before we went our riding - WHAT A DIFFERENCE! Some background - I'm a fairly big guy - 6'5", 230 lbs, and my passenger is 130 lbs. I have Leveling Links installed to raise the rear and stock size Avon Venom tires. I had the rear shock still set at 30 lbs (where I keep it when riding solo), so I pushed it up to 40. The front forks were at 8 and 8.5 lbs. Not only is that over the maximum, but not having them exactly equal is a BIG no-no. I dropped both of them to 6 lbs. These changes might not sound like much, but the difference in the handling is huge. The bike goes through sweepers like it is on rails now, and the twisties and ass-kisser turns are once again fun and comfortable. Just thought I'd pass on this experience for anyone who has not really checked thier suspension air pressures and found the right settings for their load and riding style - Goose
  20. OK, I know it was not anybody here, but I read this news story about biker gangs attacking motorists and had to share. Giving fellow bikers a bad name I wonder if there is anything else to this story that is not being reported?
  21. Wasn't sure if any of our members are in the areas that they have the wildfires at the moment. They have two in LA county. They've evacuated Pepperdine University. Didn't know if anyone had kids there either. Here's the link to the story: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071021/ap_on_re_us/california_wildfires Margaret
