  1. I received my Carbon One adapter w/legs ysterday. Today I installed the upper unit (fit perfectly), lifted the bike on my Sears ATV/MC lift and performed the Freebird recipe for tightening up the steering bearings. I now have tighter steering and all is well with the world.
  2. Hi guys, after some nice help from the lads here about tightening the steering neck bearings as a temp fix to some steering wobbles, it seems that now I'm going to have to get them either repacked or replaced.. The techs who did the tightening stated that they did not feel any flat spots so the bearings should be good as is.. just needs repacking and proper tightening.. fun.. I was perusing various cycle sites and came across this one.. listing bearings.. what's the thought on these? (if I needed to replace mine after all) http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/14/138/21652/405/PITEM/All-Balls-Steering-Stem-Bearing-Kit-2006-Yamaha-Royal-Star-1300-Venture-Parts.aspx
  3. Happy Fourth of July everyone. I am spending mine lowering my bike and installing the new seats modified by Rick Butler. Quick question. Thom and I separated the front fairings on my 2000 Venture. In order to continue lowering the front, does anyone know the steering nut size? That is the large nut in the center of the triple tree assembly. Thanks for in advance for the your input. Mike Corpus Christi, Texas
  4. Does anyone have a beverage/cup holder that doesn't hit the tank with steering at full turn? Where did you get it? Thanks!!!
  5. hey guys, while the bike was up on the sky hook tonight, I removed the cover over the key to allow the bars to swing to and fro without touching that plastic shroud.. The articles say that a properly tightened steering head should fall to one of the stops and bounce off once and nicely settle down .. However, when I do mine it's like a frikken yo yo.. a push on the bars and it hits maybe 3 or 4 times.. no wonder the bike sometimes feels like it wants to wander in some turns.. Articles say to loosen the big nut and use a common screw driver to bang against the nuts under the top tree but I can't seem to budge that big nut.. I have risers on my bars and maybe those are making it harder to access the nut? Does anyone know what size that big nut is? Is there a torque value for that nut and if so, how do you apply it?
  6. Does anyone have the definitive word on whether the fairing has to come off to do the steering head bearings? http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?p=136845
  7. What size wrench does the large nut on top of the steering head of the RSV take? I know it is larger than any metric wrench that I have and I want to make sure I buy the right size. Thanks, Dennis
  8. I could use you all to way in...I have my steering head apart and can not get the bottom bearing to unseat. It is sitting in a plastic cup. Like to know how much I can beat on this and still have usable parts when done. New parts are days away and I need to ride soon.....
  9. Well, I guess I need to replace my steering head bearings. I had the wobble at 80mph or so, and I tightened up the steering head a little. Now, the wobble is much better, but the steering response is way too sensitive now. It kind of feels like my tires are one inch wide now, and the bike teeters all over the place. Any small amount of input from me, and it overcorrects badly. I am constantly correcting back and forth when I am trying to cruise along. At acceleration, it is great, and as I said the wobble problem isn't near as bad. The bars aren't tight feeling either, just squirrelly. Sound like maybe new bearings and races will cure this?
  10. The book says the steering neck needs to be 'repacked' after so many miles (16,000 miles) My 06 Midnight bike is 'way' over that (no warranty) and I'm wondering if this is one of those checks not really required as it's rare to find anything wrong or is it something you really should have checked out after a certain while..? I ask as my bike started to demonstrate a strange wobbly-wop in turns at gentler turns and speeds.. nothing to scare you but something you can feel in the bars.. I had the front wheel checked for scalloping (low tire pressure) but this is not the case.. Would this be an indication I should have those bearing repacked and checked? The bike will be up on jacks soon so it would be an opportune time to do some 'front end checks' if there were any to check for this? Cheers
  11. Does anyone know the size of the socket required for the big nut that holds the steering crown on (big top nut)? I don't see the size in the svc manual. I have to buy a socket tomorrow morning to get it off and would like to make just one trip. Kevin
  12. The 'great' state of California needs a secondary 'Federal VIN' tag for registration. I'm at a loss as to where it's located. They know about the stamp on the steering head but, they also want a federal sticker....anybody know it's whereabouts? They won't register the bike without it.
  13. I just wondered how many people with sidecars on their Ventures have fitted leading links. My steering has been mostly light enough on my outfit with a double adult sidecar has been easy enough, even with a big trailer in tow, but on very long tours it's tiring and I'm not getting any younger. I've had leading links on other outfits and it makes for a much easier ride, as well as lighter steering, but at the expense of a handlebar heavier wobble at THAT speed. You don't get anything for nothing, but who else has kept with the standard forks and who has gone with links ?
  14. There has been several discussions concerning Steering Head Stability, ( ie. head shake ) for different bikes on this site. And it is of concern with the Ventures. Been doing the 15K maint. on the Busa yesterday and today, have all the panels removed. So I decided to take a few photos of the Frame on the 99 Busa, ( ie. Death Machine ) . Basicly to show the Extent of the Frame construction on the bike, and why, It does not have Steering Head Shake until after you exceed about 200 MPH ( not a typo ) !! Dry wgt on the bike is 476lb. -- Wheel Base, 58.5 in.-- 1.3 liter transverse 4 cyl. fuel injected. Anyway, photo's posted here to show the extent of the Frame construction, for a bike designed for high speed.
  15. I have a 2007 Royal Star Venture and have a pulse what feels like the front tire. At 50Km (30 miles)/hr on new pavement and going straight the bike front end pulses up and down not a wobble side to side. The dealership has checked the driveshaft, the bearings in the steering and I have replaced the two tires. It has improved somewhat but I can still feel it. Has anyone had this problem and can you suggest what I need to check next?

    Steering problems

Was told the r/s venture has a recall re: Steering?? Anyone know of this?
  17. OK,IF your tires are not cupped, front or back, and If you have a VERY bad wobble when on decel or your bike seems to follow the grooves where it wasnt before, read Freebirds write up on "Tightening the Steering Head" in the 2nd Gen read only maintenance area. Mine had started wobbling so bad on decel I had to really have a grip on the handlebars. I thought it was my Avons wearing out,(13,000 miles on them still very good tread on it) But after feeling tires for cupping or unusual wear I figured OK,tighten the steering head. IT WORKS! No more wobble at ANY speed or on Decel. I have ridden alot of Ventures and quite a few has this wobble but it is a simple fix and the write up is dead on. I have included the link for our New Members that may not have figured out how to Navigate the forums yet.( I know I still have trouble but I am NOT Computer literate!) Here is the link. 18. Hey all, Can anyone tell me the size of the steering head nut I need to loosen to adjust my steering head? Don's got a great write up in the tech section, but I apparently don't have a large enough open end wrench and I don't want to use channel locks and risk messing up the bolt head. Thanks for the help.
  19. Now this is interesting. Wizard765 and I both had new Avons put on the rear of our scoot this spring. Wayne also had a new front tire mounted. The bike shop did the mounting and balancing. While riding at normal cruising speed of 90 to 110 kph all is well. It's when we get to 120 to 140 kpm that we both experince the same interesting problem. The bikes start to waddle, now notice I said WADDLE not wobble. It's not the same as with loose steering head bearings, I've had that as well and fixed it. This seems to be coming more from the back than from the front. The bike reacts as though it's being buffeted from riding behind a truck, but real steady. The tire is mounted correctly in the proper direction and runs true on the center stand. Pressure is at 42 lbs. Last night I tightened the steering head a little, now no bounce, and it improved somewhat at 120 kph, but at 140 it was not pretty and at 160 it was downright scary, but it didn't develope at all, if I held the speed steady the waddle didn't get worse and disappeared slowly as I slowed down. Any ideas?
  20. Does anyone have the Hannigan conversion? I'm thinking about having one put on my 02 soon and was looking for comments about the Hannigan or about trikes in general. I was wondering about the steering, will the handlebars return to the neutral position or do you have to pull them back to center?
  21. Has anyone mounted a steering damper to their 1st Generation Venture? If you have, could you post a photo or email me one. I'm getting a pretty good wobble and all the experts recommend a damper to correct this problem when a sidecar is mounted. I have a damper that I bought on Ebay but am looking for ideas on where to attach it to the front end of the bike. Any help would be appreciated.
  22. OK help me out here. Mamamo none of this is your fault. But on the way back Mamamo was snapping pics and i was showing Froggy how good the scoot was handling. Thus pic of me with arms in air. Warden went nuts! claimed "The next time they pull you out of the ditch I won't be taking care of you!!" Really got upset about that pic. Again Mamamo it was not your fault. I tried to explain it to her that I was just checking the steering and it was no big deal. She wouldn't buy that one but said if I had enough of you to back me up that I just wasn't being a clown she might accept it. How many have done this to check steering? Road was new pavement and perfect. HELP PLEASE!!
  23. OK folks, I have been meaning to post this for a while but just hadn't gotten around to it. There is a lot of talk here about the tightening/adjusting of the steering head bearings. There is a short cut method posted in the tech library on how to tighten them without tearing the entire front end of the RSV apart. This method works fine for a short term fix. I want to say though that the easy method is NOT the preferred method. At least, not for the first time you do it. The fact is, just as Yamaha is not very good at adequately greasing the rear splines and drive shafts on these bikes, they are just as bad at greasing the steering head bearings. You can tighten them to help with any looseness but the fact is, they need to be torn down and repacked. It is not a quick job and in fact, I would expect to spend about 6 hours doing it. It is a lot of work but sooner or later, you are going to have to do it. If you don't do it now, you will do it later when you have to replace the bearings. Bob Dakin recently had this conversation with a local Yamaha service tech. Bob mentioned that he needed to tear his down and grease the bearings. I think Bob has 30 something thousand on his RSV. The tech responded that he shouldn't even bother because most of these bikes need new steering head bearings at about 50,000 miles anyway. Well my response to that is that if they need new bearings at around 50,000 miles it's because they are properly greased from the factory. So, use the short cut method if you must. I've done it to. But keep in mind that it is NOT the long term solution. If you do it, you will likely have to do it again. They will loosen up again because the bearings are wearing due to inadequate grease. Once done and done properly, they will last a LONG time and it's not something you will have to worry about again for several years.

    First Ride

I finally got to take my new to me scoot out today. I have been doing a lot of work to it since I got it home. It was only 6C today (I think that's about 48F) but I really enjoyed the 25 miles I got on. Most everything worked well! Problems with the cruise control..got it to work once and then it quit. I believe the problem is in the clutch lever switch. I did get the cruise to work momentarily and set it about 35 mph and let go of the handlebars. MAN DID I GRAB THEM FAST! This bike has the dreaded steering head shake at the lower speeds and it gets hairy really fast. I had a 96 Royal Star that barely had it and you could let it go quite awhile, but not this bike. With my hands on the bars I did not notice anything else. Couldn't let go at higher speeds...and after a bit of slower miles took it briefly up to about 75 mph. No problelms. Bike is really nice, and rider is quite protected. Hopefully with a new front tire, and some steering head tightning things will get better. Question. If the low speed steering head shake is evident, will there also be a high speed one? Will it be at some muliple of the original speed? Probably a dumb question but I gotta know! Thanks.
  25. I took the new to me RSV down the road for a short ride this afternoon. Only went a couple of miles so I didn't get a real good chance for evaluation yet. So far so good. I have to lose the stock windshield and the brick and stone tires. The steering head may need a little attention. I didn't really get the oil warmed up but so far I didn't notice any whine, at least not compared to my '03. Lots of noise from the tires though.
