  1. Well, I think my starter is getting tired. I get a slow hot crank mostly and I sometimes get a slow cold crank, but def. slower when hot. I read somewhere that the ventures have a two brush starter and the vmax has a 4 brush starter. I guess I could take mine apart and clean it but it would probably just be easier go get another used one, tune it up and throw it in and keep spares.
  2. Rode to Houston from Corpus Christi on Satuday to pick up some parts for another bike in the stable. Starter crapped out again, a welcomed push start from a group of amassed Patriot Guard Riders in a Walmart parking lot got me on the road again (Hey, works great if you let the bike sit for an hour, this is # 3 starter by the way). Another cracked armature, I'm sure. I couldn't shut the bike off while fueling, and later while being ticketed for 4 MPH over the posted limit in Port Lavaca (Labor Day weekend, no mercy ya' know). The officer was livid about that, but finally gave in when I asked if he would help me push start the bike. OK, Iv'e reaped cheap long enough, drove to San Antonio today and bought a GL1800. One well used 87 venture for sale, about 3K in it over the last three years, Ignatech igniter (bought it two years ago when it was the hot topic and mine had failed, God bless them Croations), new metering needles and seats, choke plungers, diaphrams, starter rollers, E-3's, updated brakes, Progressive springs, Franks forks, and that wonderful fork brace, along with all the stuff that was supposed to make this thing charming. BYE BYE. Great site we have here, a wealth of information as I have found, by the same token, you can chrome plate a dog turd, but you still have a dog turd all the same, it's just real shiny. Not bitter, just done with supporting a black hole. If I had one positive thing to say about this old beast, it would be that through it all, it smoked every Harley (and one Boss Mustang) that ever tried to pull the trigger on it. It did have that one redeeming value. God Bless, I will keep my membership intact, just that I will be reading the Wing Forum from here on out..
  3. I'm sure this has been covered, but I thought it bears repeating. My starter cranked very weak. All connections were great and little loss through the solenoid. Skydoc_17 suggested that I install a VMAX starter (4 brush vs. 2 brush), which he sold me at discount (thanks). This Totally solved my problem-period! I read a tutorial somewhere that detailed removing exhaust pipes (it's not that involved and you don't need to disconnect the exhaust)! You DO need to remove the radiator and lower hoses. The bypass tube leading from the thermostat housing and the housing itself (remove the plastic elbow from the water pump and take the entire assembly out). Use new O-rings for everything and use some vasoline to lube them (or something similar). I have a first Gen and I needed to remove the air dam and it was easier with the right side crash bar removed. I spent about 3 hours, but I changed the thermostat and did some other things as well. I should have taken pictures, but that would have cut into my drinking time!
  4. I have a 1987 VR that when you hit the starter button there is a whining noise of the starter turning but not fire. Right now it is on the center stand, in neutral, kick stand up, kill switch on position. No change with the clutch held in either. New plugs New wires New TCI New Starter relay New Battery Starter checks good (have used two with no change) Following the troubleshooting guide in the maintenance manual good ohm readings on: Pickup coils Stator Coils Connectors all clean. Craig
  5. Does anyone know what the resistance reading should be from the starter cable connection to ground. My friend's '82 Yamaha has 0.2 ohms. This seems low to me. Can not find any info on reading in service manual. Frank
  6. Hello I am new here and was wondering if anyone has ever has had a problem with the starter not ever going off? I took my starter switch apart and am unable to figure out how to put it back together also. Even with the starter switch apart it still turns over and will not shut off! Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks you alll so very much in advance.
  7. I haven't dug into the new 88VR yet...(took my wife for a ride today and she likes the ride better than the 83 or 84. One thing I have noticed....when the bike is hot I have NO ISSUES with slow starter syndrome that plagued both the older bikes. Is this probably because the PO fixed something (4 brush starter or 4 gu wire or better ground ala dingy's mod) Or Did they make some changes and improvements to correct the problem at the factory?
  8. Would a 1985 V Max starter fit on an 83 Venture?
  9. Hey guys, I think the starter is not dis-engaging after a start on my '83 Venture Royale. I have been tuning and balancing and have not yet had her on the road. While shutting it down just now I could hear the starter wind down, the engine had been running for about 5 minutes. Upon trying to start it again the starter is sluggish on a fully charged battery. Am I looking at replacing the starter? Or is there a repair that can be made? I should say that I am just trying to get this thing in good enough condition to ride to the shop where I plan to have them do the rest of the work. I am fighting the clock for a ride next month, and I am in a little over my head with this. Thanks for any insight.
  10. I had a strange occurrence today that I thought was going to leave me stranded. I came up on a mobile construction stop light that I knew was very long so I turned off the bike to keep the heat down. It was close to 90 degrees out. I had just done this on the other direction and had made a ccouple other stops with no problems. When I thought the light was about to change I hit the starter and everything went out. I lost the instrument cluster and the starter wouldn't engage. The odd thing is that the power outlets that are wired direct to battery also went out. I pulled off to the side and tried wiggling wires etc. I also pulled the line fuze for the outlets. After several attempts and 10 minutes it came back to life and has been fine since. I'm afraid of this happening again. Any thoughts?
  11. Rode my 89 VR for an hour this morning then let it sit for an hour. Started it up again to to ride and it started right up but made a sawing or hising sound. I hit the stop button to kill the engine and it stopped. Started it up again and made the same noise. I listened for a couple seconds and decided that it is the starter that is not disengaging. Shut if off and started it up and this time the noise went away. My VR has 25,500 miles on it and only 1500 miles is mine. The 1st 24,000 was from South Lake Tahoe and in the winter months it was a garaged. And at my home it is also garaged. Any suggestions of what to check or to clean?
  12. Ok folks my 89 VR has developed a serious hard start condition. The starter spins freely for several seconds and the engine eventually catches and slowly revs up but only if I am giving it throttle input (which I do not like to do). I does this no matter the tempurature hot or cold. Once the bike is running it idles great and runs down the highway with no issues; smooth as glass. This is a very recent development as the bike used to start right up with with no issues. The bike was ridden all winter and never sat more than a week. Even on the 20 degree F days the bike started with full choke. Here are the things I (with Earl's help) have done recently: 1. Mark's Pipe collector and all new exhaust gaskets and clamps 2. Heavy Sea Foam cleaning to prep for spring and summer riding; actually I use Sea Foam in small doses at irregular intervals just to keep things lubed 3. Carb tuneup to include idle mixture and sync to cure popping; have not removed the carb rack as it wasn't an issue until now 4. New (to me) stock mufflers 5. Two plug changes one due to Sea Foam cleaning, the other because I was using heavy choke to remedy some of the aforementioned popping. 6. New valve cover gaskets. 7. Plug wires were replaced last September 8. Battery was replaced with AGM last October As mentioned the bike runs great but it is getting to be a bear to start. I am sure this isn't good for the starter, starter clutch or battery. Skydoc and I have a theory of the problem but I wanted to solicit some more inputs. Thanks
  13. A couple of months ago I got an 83 Venture Royal project. When I first got it it would turn over slowly. I've had the battery out while I've been working on other things. Now when I try and start her everything dies when I hit the starter button and I need disconnect the battery to get it back. Is there anything I should check before I remove the starter? Is there a way I can do and initial check on the starter before I remove it from the bike? I know enough about electrical systems to be dangerous. I’m in school at Washtenaw
  14. If you remember me with the stuck float, I've got it unstuck and tested by activating the kill switch. No more fuel out the overflow. Got it all back together. Now the Starter won't turn over. Kill switch is on Run. Lights and horn works. The last time the starter turned over was when I was turning the engine over trying to unstick the float. Open to suggestions.
  15. My VR will be running fine. I pull up to a light or stop in traffic. Sometimes it just dies like you turned the ignition off. It doesn't sputter before it does this, it just quits. It will usually start right back up, but the starter turns it slowly. Sometimes I have to push it out of traffic and wait a minute or two before it will crank fast enough to start. I have to put it in neutral, just pulling the clutch lever won't let it crank. It doesn't do it until it has warmed up and I have driven a ways (it usually does it when driven at least 10 or 15 miles in warm weather). It has a one year old gel cell battery and a 4 brush starter with large battery wire. Sometimes if I catch it quick enough as I'm starting to open the throttle, it will pick back up and run ok, until the next time.
  16. Last year my 2nd gen venture started right up as always. Pull choke press start, boom, immediate gratification. As the summer progressed, I would pull the choke press start, grind on starter for 5 seconds, engine starts small delay in gratification. Summer progresses more its now 100+ degree days, no choke press start crack the throttle grind starter 20 seconds engine finally starts. By the end of summer pull choke, press starter, grind on starter till I was ashamed of myself. Wait...............repeat, wait................. repeat finally starts. Then just as I parked it tried to start again......nothing but the ignition switch is on, the speedo does cycle through the checks, theradio controls all function. New fuel filter, fuel pump was replaced but did flow fuel as per the spec sheet. All lights function as they should. I did purchase a new TCI module as I thought that might be the problem and new plug wires. I am getting no spark to any of the spark plugs.
  17. All of these safety switches I just cant get the starter switch to work, I still start the bike but I have a switch hooked to the starter relay (solenoid) and the + post on the battery. It works but if it doesn't start right away well all those amps going thru a 10 Gage wire the smoke starts puffing and soon there's fire. I bought a new right hand throttle Assembly from a site member so I'm sure the starter switch is good. All the possable relays and safety switches are mind boggling, kick stand, clutch, neutral switch on and on. On my riding lawn mower the first thing I do is bypass them. Is there any way to bypass all these switches and just get the starter switch to work or a way to rig a switch up to get the job done. I know the switches are there for safety reasons but as far as I'm concerned if you don't know your in neutral or the kick stand is up you probably shouldn't be riding the bike any way. Any help would be greatly appreciated its been a tough few years and the funds are tight so I really need a cheap quick fix if there is one. Thanks Pete
  18. Did you ever start a small project and end up deeper than you had any intention? I knew my front tire was a little worn and had a lot of cracks in it too, so thought I would replace the Elite 2 with a new one, now how hard can that be? I took the wheel off and had a friend change the tire. He left it out in the rain after changing it and got a lot of water in the bearings. Well guess with 40k on the bike it might be a good idea to replace the bearings. Talked to Buckeye to order the parts and mentioned that I was going to check the starter since I had a small leak in the radiator hose also and it would be a good time to look at the starter. The bike starts slow after it is hot. He suggested that the real fix was a 4 brush starter. Ok one more thing what the heck. While disconnecting the battery to remove the starter found a broken fuse clip so guess I will change over to new type fuses. ALL I REALY WANTED TO DO WAS CHANGE MY TIRE!!!!
  19. SO, here's the new issue. When my '87 is hot I get a gear clashing / crunch from the lower left as I am sitting on the machine when I hit the start button. This happens one out of four starts or so. Is this the starter clutch? The starter seems to be engaging and disengaging fine but the crunch is bad when it happens I saw the write up on starter clutches and it looks ugly so I want to attempt to confirm before popping covers off the engine. All the best! -Jim
  20. i stored my bike for the winter and it worked just fine.....tokk of the attery and stored it indoors.....didnt work when i put it back on....so i buy a new 1....fully charged and it still dont work.....not even getting a click from starter......just the 2 red lights go out when i try to start.....can any1 help me plz
  21. today i took the bike out for a warm up ride. i let it warm up its running rough. must have had the winter blues? anyways i just drove up the block to an old abandon grocery store and drove around the parking lot. huge lot. i rode around for about an hour. just getting the feel of the bike again and with this knee brace on the left leg. well i stopped the bike. got off and went around back to take care of some personal buisness. went and tried to start the bike. starter turned over slow like a bad battery? battery showed it was low on the green down below 12? well i went oh crap. my car is just down the road a block. i will go and get the battery booster out of the storage shed. then i thought well i drink my gatoraide before i slow walk down there. well after about 15 minutes i said let me try it again. turned on the switch. hit the starter button and vroom it started. but im hearing a strange noise? not sure if its the starter or the water pump? a whirrrrrrrrrrr noise? thought the starter button was stuck. but recalled i replaced the whole throttle and starter button with a nice working one. just before i put the bike up for storage. oh i bought a new battery just before i out it away too. and will need to do the sensor mod. have to figure out how to do that after installing skydocs fuse panel. anyways what could it be?
  22. well as most know i had some bad health issues with knees kidney and back problems. could hardley walk. been useing a walker and moving verry little. well i had both knees injected with a new kind of shot. and one in the back? today i went from a walker back to my cane. im getttin stronger in the legs. and now the knee replacement can be put off till im 55. im going to be 53 in august. so my graduation present. is i can now move up to aqua PT i can use the pool to exersize the legs more. i tould my doctor. to please keep me on PT. as its working. i also went from 270 pounds down to 255. im shooting for 230 by MD??? i also went up and had a friend fire up the bike. in storage. it leaked a little gas out one of the carbs on the kick stand side? it allways done this since i bought the bike. a slight tap with a screwdriver and all is well? he took it for a ride of 4 miles. went to restart it and it fired up but sounds like starter clutch is getting lose/ noise up front more a whirl like noise? i did have a sticky starter switch last year but i replaced the whole grip and all with one from pinwall. lubed the cables had a hell of a time getting the cruise to work but got it. anyways just a update on how im doing.
  23. I installed my new starter this afternoon--she fired right up!!!---BUT!---It sounds like my starter is still trying to stay engaged--the last starter was ruined when the Starter Button became stuck while I was starting it and I didn't notice it was stuck until the damage was done----I freed the starter button and it seems to be working ok---My question is--Has anyone had this problem and do you think it would be best to replace the starter button assembly while I'm this deep into it?.......................Larry:confused07:
  24. I started my 89 Venture this afternoon and left it running at idle sped to warm up--came back a few minutes later and noticed a werrrrrring sound coming from the lower front of engine--sounded very strange so I began investigating while it was running--after a few minutes it just "shut down"-at about this same time I noticed that my "starter button" had stuck "in" when I started the bike----OK---what do you guys think I ruined when this happened----I tried to restart it and nothing----the battery was hot as fire and showed no charge--i have taken it out and placed it on battery tender charge for tonight---I was just wondering what I might have shorted out or burnt up when the Starter button stuck in......thanks.............Larry
  25. OK guys--I think my starter is fried--My question is-do you have to remove the Outside cover to remove the starter?--I have the bolts out and it's loose but will not release ......................Larry
