  1. If I let go of the bars while in motion the bike will always start to lean to the left. What is this an indication of..?? Thanks for your input.
  2. Ok I have a very odd problem. It is not so much a problem as it is a nuisance. If I use the kil switch ti shut off the engine then when I want to start the bike up I have to 1) turn the switch to run 2) push the starter button 3) turn the kill switch off then on again and then start it. If I just flip it on then off then on again then I will be push starting. I have to try to start it before turning it of then back on. Any ideas? It is like some possessed anti theft or something. Shaun
  3. I have a 2006 RSV with 35,000 miles. I have had an on again off again problem with trying to start the bike. I will go out to start my bike, I pull the choke, turn the key on and I will NOT hear the fuel pump. The bike will fire and start but never make it to a fast idol. The funny part about this is 2 hours later I come back flip the key and I will hear the fuel pump engage right away. The first time I noticed was after a good wash. After a day of sitting I got the bike running, turned the hose on, and sprayed down the engine with water like it was on fire. NOTHING.....did not choke, spit, sputter or die....kept running like there was never a problem. This morning I went out to start the bike to ride to work. The bike sat in the garage for two days (rained all weekend) and had not run since Friday. The bike was a dry as dry gets. I pull the choke, turn the key on, and NO noise from the fuel pump. The bike cranks, fires, and starts but stays at a low RPM. Slowly the bike chugs out and dies. I placed my hand on all for exhaust pipes and all four were hot. I have thought for a while I either have fuel pump or fuel pump relay issues. Any thoughts??
  4. Hey guys, I think the starter is not dis-engaging after a start on my '83 Venture Royale. I have been tuning and balancing and have not yet had her on the road. While shutting it down just now I could hear the starter wind down, the engine had been running for about 5 minutes. Upon trying to start it again the starter is sluggish on a fully charged battery. Am I looking at replacing the starter? Or is there a repair that can be made? I should say that I am just trying to get this thing in good enough condition to ride to the shop where I plan to have them do the rest of the work. I am fighting the clock for a ride next month, and I am in a little over my head with this. Thanks for any insight.
  5. Riding in the tail of a group tonight and not watching my gauges. Radio started cutting out. Then at a stop the bike completely died. Turns out the connector between the regulator/rectifier and harness had melted apart. Fortunately some digging pieces out of the molten nylon with a pocket knife and a bit of electrical tape got it patched up. A push start later and I was rolling. In hindsight it's kind of obvious this one needs to be cleaned and tightened just like the stator plug.........
  6. I have an 88 VR. Last year the TCI nuked and I replaced it with the ignition from Checkloslovakia. Road for quite a while this spring now I'm having trouble with hot starts. Bike starts first time but won't start after being ridden for awhile. Will turn over once or twice then the starter disengages. Leave it set for an hour and come back to it and it will start. I don't know whats going on but the battery is good and when running charges at 12 volts. Anyone have any ideas?
  7. A lot has been going on in this household for the past few years, it all started with Charlene having her knee scoped, then before she could start PT for that, she burned both her feat severly, that aggravated her back and hip with the position she had to keep her feet in, then 2 spine surgeries in Jan. 2010, then a total hip replacement later the same year, then 2011 comes along and she has surgery for herniated disk in her neck. She still has some other problems but is going to PT for those to see if that helps. I start out this year with a severe case of bursitis that was very very painful and kept me out of work for a few days, that all cleared up, and now find I have scoleosis, spinal stenosis, and s slipped vertebrae. Treatment started on that, feeling a little better, stated PT yesterday, and BANG, started having chest pains on the way home.........dang, not having the other symptoms associated with the BIG ONE, so call my nurse rep with my med carrier and she says get to ER right away...........Oh No..!!!!!!!! Get there they put me in a trauma room stat start taking blood, EKG, X-Rays, inhalation therapy for trouble catching my breath. After almost 2 hours all hooked up to monitors the Dr. comes back..........Double Pneumonia , ok, I have had walking Pneumonia several times but I usually had something else going on to precipitate it...........not this time, sudden onset, I didnt know that it could happen that suddenly, but I learned different. Now I have to miss 3 days of work at least. Sure wish this Black Cloud would move on. Now they have me on IV antibiotics, after about 5 minnutes I start itching on my face and neck, I am breaking out in Hives, call the nurse back, have to switch antibiotics, they give me more steroids, and Benadryl to stop the itching. What is next? Just spoke to my daughter who is in nursing school, tell her whats going on and get another punch in the face, the antibiotic I am now on, and the steroids can make you susceptible to tearing your Achilles tendon.:bang head: Aint life DANDY???
  8. I want to live my next life backwards! You start out dead and get that out of the way right off the bat. Then, you wake up in a nursing home feeling better every day. When you are kicked out of the home for being too healthy, you spend several years enjoying your retirement and collecting benefit checks. When you start work, you get a gold watch on your first day. You work 40 years or so, getting younger every day until pretty soon you're too young to work. So then, you go to high school: play sports, date, drink, and party. As you get even younger, you become a kid again. You go to elementary school, play, and have no responsibilities. In a few years, you become a baby, and everyone runs themselves ragged keeping you happy. You spend your last 9 months floating peacefully in luxury, spa-like conditions: central heating, room service on tap. Until finally . . . You finish off as an orgasm. I rest my case.
  9. I finally think i have an issue thats been bugging me on my 85 for about 2 years. It has been a very intermittent starting issue that would happen 2 or 3 times a season, usually when the bike was hot and/or sitting in sun. Checked over everything everytime and found nothing wrong, wait for a cool down and it would start......until in a moment of complete frustration:whistling: as it was making me late for work I just started pressing all buttons and switches, and when i sounded the horn, the bike started! http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smilies/icon_exclaim.gif as I was still holding the starter!........this set me to checking grounding points and reseating all connections I could think of, but the bike still very occasionally would still not start except by hitting the horn button while holding the starter engaged. Things changed while in Drumheller a couple of weeks ago as I had 3 incidents that day where the bike didnt start, but, the horn trick did its thing, but it was unusual as it never happened that often before. Anyway on the way home we rode thru about an hour of steady rain and the highways were wet for a large chunk of the 8 hour ride home, but the bike ran fine. The next morning after getting home, the bike wouldnt start at all (even with the horn), so I tried to reseat every connection i could think of and liberally sprayed wd40 into the sidestand switch and any connector I could see thinking it would force the water out. The bike started right after that, so I thought i was good and figured it had to be side stand even though my dash showed the stand engaged or not. Anyway bike continued to be undependable starting but now the horn doesnt start it, and its happening much more frequently. Finally, while stranded with a bike that didnt start a couple of days ago I noticed that my clutch switch wiring harness looked like it was twisted and the was loose on the handlebar and the weather boot wasnt covering the connection point totally, so I pulled it apart and cleaned it right there and the bike immediatly fired right up and hasnt given me any issues since.(and I have tried about 50 starts or more) My working theory is that the horn switch wire is in that part of the wiring harness and somehow I had a bad connection inside there and sounding the horn somehow allowed enough current through to complete a circuit. I dont know why i hadnt thought to check that area before, but i was so sure it had to be a ground or my side switch. It works now, and I am fairly sure that Ive fixed the issue, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed. Brian
  10. I am about to mount one of Ponch's built center stands and I see a 6" long 3" diameter black tube with a rubber cap on it with a rubber hose running out the end mounted to the angle bracket where I need to mount the stand. First, what is this part and what does it do? Second Is there a relocation mod for this or is this part not necessary? Before I start taking stuff off I would like to know what I am doing before I mess something up. Thanks for any insight I can get... Mongo
  11. well i am getting ready to leave for Freebirds MD i will hit the rode at 10:30 am so i should start seeing some of you guys on the rode or at Dons tonight. and safe travels:cool10:
  12. Ok folks my 89 VR has developed a serious hard start condition. The starter spins freely for several seconds and the engine eventually catches and slowly revs up but only if I am giving it throttle input (which I do not like to do). I does this no matter the tempurature hot or cold. Once the bike is running it idles great and runs down the highway with no issues; smooth as glass. This is a very recent development as the bike used to start right up with with no issues. The bike was ridden all winter and never sat more than a week. Even on the 20 degree F days the bike started with full choke. Here are the things I (with Earl's help) have done recently: 1. Mark's Pipe collector and all new exhaust gaskets and clamps 2. Heavy Sea Foam cleaning to prep for spring and summer riding; actually I use Sea Foam in small doses at irregular intervals just to keep things lubed 3. Carb tuneup to include idle mixture and sync to cure popping; have not removed the carb rack as it wasn't an issue until now 4. New (to me) stock mufflers 5. Two plug changes one due to Sea Foam cleaning, the other because I was using heavy choke to remedy some of the aforementioned popping. 6. New valve cover gaskets. 7. Plug wires were replaced last September 8. Battery was replaced with AGM last October As mentioned the bike runs great but it is getting to be a bear to start. I am sure this isn't good for the starter, starter clutch or battery. Skydoc and I have a theory of the problem but I wanted to solicit some more inputs. Thanks
  13. Well the trailer for Annie and Allen to use is sitting at Dano's and I thought the weather should be getting better to start moving it again. I talked to Marilla (Vicco on the site) and she said the trailer could stay at their place in OR. They live about 2 hrs south of Portland. Figured it might be better to keep it somewhere in the family till they get here. So if we can start thinking of who can move it closer it would be greatly appreciated. With this group I know we can make this happen. We've moved stuff before. Thanks Margaret
  14. Just looking at this '83 on Ebay and noticed the vin# doesn't compute. #50. According to all the service manuals the numbers start at #100, and this is the first one I've seen under that. 270751434135
  15. I have a simple pressure washer ?. It is related to using the soapy washer option. I thought that all one has to do is to fill a container with appropiate washer fluid and then put the little plastic tube with the nozzel in the container. Start up the pressure washer and when pressing the spray trigger the process will start to suck the washer fluid with the water. I also did make sure the adjustment at the plastic tube nozzel is open to suck up the soapy solution. Any suggestion ?
  16. Tried to fire up the Venture last night and it will not start. Checked exhaust headers when she did start for a brief period and the back L&R were hot. Front L&R were cold. She would repeatedly fire and lug on the rear two cylinders for approx. 15 to 30 seconds and die. What should I check and how?
  17. A couple of months ago I got an 83 Venture Royal project. When I first got it it would turn over slowly. I've had the battery out while I've been working on other things. Now when I try and start her everything dies when I hit the starter button and I need disconnect the battery to get it back. Is there anything I should check before I remove the starter? Is there a way I can do and initial check on the starter before I remove it from the bike? I know enough about electrical systems to be dangerous. I’m in school at Washtenaw
  18. I've read up on a couple of threads on Cold Blooded for after my VR sat for 5 days it had a very tough time starting and to keep running and getting warmed up. It must have taken 5 minutes or more for the temp gage to just start moving up. I did not ride it but let it warm up to normal operating temp. Now this morning about 24 hours later my VR started right up and in about 1 minute I could put the choke off. So what would make the difference between 1 day sitting and 5 days sitting? I'm in the Seattle area and even tho we are almost in May, It hailed in Buckley yesterday, so it was quite cold last night around 37 degrees. Just wondering being that I'm trying to get a feel as to how often I should start the VR up being that I'm not a daily rider or even a weekly rider being that I work 26 days on and 2 days off. At this time I'll probably at least start the VR up once a week. I'm not trying to be too pickey but I thought that 5 days without running it should start right up.
  19. Ok so let start this by saying. "Thanks to everyone that has commented on Avon tires that cracked":happy34: I've had Avons since 2005 (except for the emergency replacement). I would like to hear from members that have gotten Avon tires with-in the past year and had good tires. I love my Avons but am a little concerned about the recent cracking problems that a few riders have commented on. I almost ordered some E-3's but then decided to start this thread and wait till Monday to do the ordering.
  20. My VR will be running fine. I pull up to a light or stop in traffic. Sometimes it just dies like you turned the ignition off. It doesn't sputter before it does this, it just quits. It will usually start right back up, but the starter turns it slowly. Sometimes I have to push it out of traffic and wait a minute or two before it will crank fast enough to start. I have to put it in neutral, just pulling the clutch lever won't let it crank. It doesn't do it until it has warmed up and I have driven a ways (it usually does it when driven at least 10 or 15 miles in warm weather). It has a one year old gel cell battery and a 4 brush starter with large battery wire. Sometimes if I catch it quick enough as I'm starting to open the throttle, it will pick back up and run ok, until the next time.
  21. Last year my 2nd gen venture started right up as always. Pull choke press start, boom, immediate gratification. As the summer progressed, I would pull the choke press start, grind on starter for 5 seconds, engine starts small delay in gratification. Summer progresses more its now 100+ degree days, no choke press start crack the throttle grind starter 20 seconds engine finally starts. By the end of summer pull choke, press starter, grind on starter till I was ashamed of myself. Wait...............repeat, wait................. repeat finally starts. Then just as I parked it tried to start again......nothing but the ignition switch is on, the speedo does cycle through the checks, theradio controls all function. New fuel filter, fuel pump was replaced but did flow fuel as per the spec sheet. All lights function as they should. I did purchase a new TCI module as I thought that might be the problem and new plug wires. I am getting no spark to any of the spark plugs.
  22. Now and then I see"low fuel light" mentioned. I have a 1999 venture with no such creature. I even walked once and nothing. Do all ventures have them or does mine just not work. If mine doesn't work, does anyone have any ideas where I might start to get one. Thanks Richard
  23. I know who knows....we were not riding it BUT today while out for a ride I really "lit" into the bike from a rolling start at a yield intersection. It really felt like the back end broke loose. This is a really heavy bike and it caught me off guard. Nice clean dry pavement. Will these bikes break the rear wheel from a rolling start??? Or was I imagining it
  24. I finally got around to working on the Venture. Got it running last night and took it for a hour long ride up weber canyon and Trappers Loop - That’s the success part. The bad part is it really does not want to start. With the enrichment on it will pop out the carbs a few times then back fires out the left side enough that the end cap on that side is blown halfway down the street. Usually it takes about ten min of work (some throttle, starter fluid) to get it to start once it starts it runs good. I plan on pulling the carbs and giving them a good cleaning. As I am cleaning them is there anything that I need to be looking for? No need to pull them apart and put them back together with bad parts that I don't know about.
  25. It's over now... Went to pick up a 165/80R - 15 kumho tire at tire discount in jackson OHIO and they said there were none to be had in their warehouses because of the strike in Korea. Looked it up on the internet when I got back and it says the strike is now over... they had been fighting about a month... Passenger car tires are gonna start up first so we should be able to get some fresh ones shortly! :mo money:Although a little more expensive? "The darkside is strong with this one"
