  1. My Gal has to attend the ANA conference in San Diego starting tomorrow. She will fly out. BUT I will take the Venture out on Tuesday (first leg 1200+ miles in one sitting) then we will attend the banquet on wendsday. Now the fun starts. From there to Reseda Over night, Then on to San Jose Up 101. Over Night. From there to Elko Nv Over Night On to Rock springs Wy Over Night. Next stop Colorado springs. Over Night. On to Amarillo Over Night. Last day back home in Beautiful Lipan Tx. About 3900 miles in ten days or so. Don't do the math we will use all ten days but don't know yet where we may spend more than one day. Any sugestions are appreciated. Near certain to spend at least an extra day in Colorado Springs. Pikes peak, Royal Gorge, Garden of the Gods. Hell May take Twelve Days who Can say.
  2. My wife and I own a 1984 VR that we bought almost 4 years ago. It's a fantastic machine that my wife and I ride only a few hundred miles during Edmonton's short summers. The bike has 74K MILES (US-spec'd bike). Yesterday I went to ride the bike and saw some oil on the floor underneath the end of the left fork tube. I determined that there is a slow leak at the left fork tube dust cover. If you look closely, you an see the oil track down the center of the tube. http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y35/Tony1M/leftforkleaking.jpg I've never worked on a motorcylce fork, so I read Freebird's excellent tech library article: [ame=http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=496]Fork Seal Replacement - VentureRider.Org[/ame] I think I understand how to do the job, but, before I start the job, I'd like to determine if our bike already has progressive springs. The previous owner was very conscientious about maintaining the bike (it still looks in near-new condition), so it is quite possible that he installed progressive springs at some point. As I said, my wife and I ride the bike. I weigh about 285 and she about 130 (her precise weight is a closely-guarded national-security secret), so the bike is carrying 415 lbs of passengers. As far as I can tell, the travel of the fork does not bottom out during normal driving over some fairly substantial bumps. In short, the bike handles beautifully. How can I tell if the bike has progressive springs? I assume that I should also replace seals in the side that is not now leaking. Tell me if I'm wrong. How long should it take a savy newbie to replace the fork seals? How much longer, and how much more effort, if the springs are also replaced? (FWIW, I've rebuilt the carbs and the bike runs great, and I personally perform all of the maintenance on our 92 Accord [that we bought new], so I have some mechanical aptitude. I also have the "official" Yamaha service manual for the bike.) Also, I would say maybe 25 mls of oil have leaked. How much oil can I lose without noticing a change in handling? Can/should I still ride the bike while waiting for parts? Thanks for the advice.
  3. well folks i'm starting to think about my meet next year. this was the last year for my meet and eat in st. charles. i think folks are burning out on it, and need something new and different. i know i do. trying to decide on a neat location. i am only going to do one next year. i already offered to don do the 2010 rally. if he would like me to do it i would be honered. if not i am going to put one on. it will either be in montgomery city, mo. or eureka springs. i am leaning toward montgomery city. lots of great riding in that area. all country with a-one facilities. after the hub meet you may tar and feather me. already got the wheels turning for next year.
  4. Can tips/ends be put on the Venture mufflers?? If so, which are recommended:confused24: I want the end of the mufflers to face DOWN a bit, due to there being a plate directly behind them on the trike conversion that may over time get heat damaged. (It covers the springs at the back) Also the rubber end of my crutches will sit near there while I ride. Don't want to pull up and find a burnt crutch!! The smell of burning rubber would put the wind up me anyway!! (is it bike trouble)
  5. Where is the best place to purchase Progressive springs for an '88 VR? Dave
  6. It's been a couple years since I removed the bodywork on my 87 VR and I'm just now putting the bike together. I wish I had taken photos while taking it apart but I didn't. I did bag and tag the nuts, bolts etc. In the bags for the body, front upper pieces (main faring pieces) I have one spring for each side. I don't remember where these go and I don't see the springs on the faring exploded parts view. Can anyone tell me where they should go? Thanks, Ron
  7. Has anyone purchased fork springs from Progressive lately? What dealer did you use since Progressive's web site sells these springs through dealers only and how long did it take. I orderd a set via Old Bike Barn two weeks ago (they had good pricing). I cannot get them to answer my email or check on my order. They will not answer their telephone either so I am looking for a new dealer. Thanks
  8. Wife and I will be leaving Kansas City on Sunday 28 June going to Sioux Falls SD On Mon 29JUN Sioux Falls SD to Rapid City SD On Tue 30JUN to Rapid City SD to Casper WY On Wed 01JUL Casper WY to Rock Springs WY On Thu 02JUL Rock Springs to Salt Lake City area Any one plan on being in the areas on any of these dates let me know and maybe we can meet up and ride together.
  9. It is my understanding that there is a difference between the MKI and MKII on the difference in the diameter of the hole in the slides. I read in another post about using a dinajet kit and it said with the weaker springs, the slide hole needed to be opened up and frankly, that did not make sense to me. I would have thought that weaker springs would require a smaller slide hole as a larger allows more vacuum to pull the slides open quicker as would weaker springs. What would opening up the hole do on the slide actuation, especially with the washer change and extending the needle out .030 more on an 83 model? RandyA
  10. I'd just like to make a few comments about the fork brace and after market fork springs designed for the 1stGen Venture as there’s some misconception about what exactly they will do. Will the brace cure the dreaded high speed ‘Tank Slap’ experienced by some riders? No. The brace is not a cure-all Band-Aid. If your bike is experiencing high speed wobbles or tank slap it’s because the bike has a problem(s). Bad front or rear tire cap, out of round tire, bent rim, out of balance tire, weak fork springs, bent fork(s), bent main frame, worn steering head bearings, worn fork seals, low fork oil, high fork oil, worn axle bearings, etc. What the fork brace will do, along with new springs, is enhance the bike’s handling performance. They will improve the bike’s overall ride and stability. It will make panic stops smoother and more manageable. The effects of pot holes, curve tracking, rough surfaces will be reduced. Side torque due to uneven rough surfaces will be greatly reduced. In some instances a slight rebound wobble from small differences in rebound action due to seal or spring wear, will be reduced or eliminated. However, inevitably they will only continue to wear over time and will need to be addressed. These two mods should be done to every 1stGen on the road today. One is the after market fork brace. The other is improved fork springs. Both parts are relatively inexpensive, and the mods easy to perform, but the improvement in handling is huge. The OEM fork brace is inadequate, and cosmetic at best. All First Generation Ventures are 16 to 25 years old and are going to have weak springs. It’s a given. Improvements in spring technology have basically made the new OEM springs obsolete. If anyone is still riding around with original springs and brace on your bike, you’re short changing yourself, and your ride experience.
  11. I will be "attempting" to install new progessives tomorrow. I have never done this job but it doesn't appear to be that difficult. I've thought that before about other mods I started and what should had been easy turned out to be much more involved than I initially thought. Been burnt many times. But still this seems to be a fairly straight forward job. So, I ask, once I remove the fork caps, otherthan the old springs, what else is removed and "not" reused? Also, in addition to the new springs and the PVC looking spacer, what else should I install and/or replace? I am building that "monster" tool as recommended by Condor; a piece of 17mm Hex key soldered in a 17mm 6 pt socket. Hopefully, all goes well.
  12. I'm going to order Progressive Springs for the front end on my '83 VR. I noticed that there are different weights of springs, so I'm not sure which to order. I'm a big guy and often ride two up, so I'm assuming that I should get the heaviest that I can get. Any recommendations?
  13. We are back and SAFE. We got back yesterday from our first road trip on the venture. I was very pleased at the comfort, space for all the stuff we needed and the performance of the bike. Thanks to all of you for all the advice on packing and bike maintenance items...tips and tricks. We tried to leave Thrusday at 6AM but the weather did not look good. There was a lot of weather on the Mississppi river that we were gonn have to cross to get to ARK. The front passed Thrusday night and we attempted to leave again at 6 AM only to find a mist of rain Friday morning. Waited till about 9 AM and got on our way. I just got a Zumo 660 and had the whole route mapped out and loaded in the Garmin. IT worked great for fuel, lodging and keep us going in the right direction. We made the whole trip and only 41 miles were on the interstate so we could really see the countryside. Crossing the Mississppi delta was quite a drag...miles and miles of flat straight roads with nothing but corn or soy beans. We went north and crossed the river at Helena on Hwy49 with the first night destination of Harrison ARK. 450 miles the first day...made it fine thanks to the Butler mods on the seats. I forgot to put on the sunscreen the first day..now my face is falling off. ARK seems to be a very bike friendly state. No Helment law (which is OK with me...it should be your choice to wear a helment not the govements, I always wear mine) and lots of signs posted that say "Look twice save a life...motorcycles are everywhere". Roads were all very good also. Holels we stayed at were biker friendly with towels avalible to wipe off your bikes and they give you maps of senic rides in the areas telling you where fuel is availible and how many curves are on that route. We rode the ozarks down to Hot springs on Hwy 7 and stopped for the night in Hot Springs. We walked the city over and looked at all we could there also. One thing...seems folks don't know how to parallel park in Hot Springs. We had a friend of ours with us on a Ultra Classic so both the bikes were parked on the street same as about 300 more bikes, while we were eating. A lady trying to parallel park in pulled up close to the ultra and turned her front tire getting ready to back into the parking place and hit the Harley with her tire...almost turning it over and into mine. No damage and luckly we were right there. 5 minutes later a truck pulled in the parking place in front of the bikes and missed my fender by at least 1 inch. Then could not get the truck straight and backed toward the bikes 6-8 times with-in 6 inches. We had to go after that. We did not get to finish our lunch. Seems if we kept them rolling, we had more control over what happens. Trip back was great...we came back south and crossed at Greenville MS...again miles and miles of flat farm land with nothing to see. It was like walking on a treadmill..same seanery for hours. We made it back about 3:30 yesteday...Safe and sound. 992 miles later and ready to go again. We will go back but not across the MS delta. Not many photos...but we will do better next time. Wife claims she was too busy holding on...to take photos:rotf:
  14. Peg & I took the 01 Wing out for a ride tonight and I have to say these Progressive Springs in the front are awful hard, and makes the ride very uncomfortable. I noticed the front end was hard when I test drove the Wing, it was rough and figured I get used to the stiff ride, But I have to say this is enough for me. I did the bounce test with the front brakes applied and I could hardly get the forks to move down any and I weight 230lbs, man these things are stiff. As for going down the road I can see them move some over rough roads but not much and the front end feels hard as a rock, you can feel every crack in the road. Also did a power brake they go down maybe 1 - 1 1/2" does this sound like their way to stiff? I never had progressives before and I'm going in the forks and see what I can do to get a smoother ride. I just may go back to stock set up I loved the ride the 08 put out. I did notice that the 01 Wing with progressive springs handle the roads better in MO & AR than the 08 Wing did . But I rather have the smoother ride affect.... Has anyone did any changes to the Progressive Springs to get a smoother ride? Buddy
  15. I just installed fork springs in my 86 vr in manul it says to put 400mm in forks but i have been reading here when you put prog springs in you don't put that much oil in I put 375mm in forks is that good or not need help THANKS
  16. :think:Who has the bestprice for progressive springs for 1989 VR
  17. After changing the engine oil to Rotella 15w-40, I still had the clutch slip a few times in 5th gear on hard acceleration at 4-5k rpm during my 120 mile commute to work to today. I see a lot of posts referring to replacing the springs for only $10, but I checked both BikeBandit and Chapparal and they both listed them for $7.97/ea. Since there are 6 of them, that would be around $48 total plus shipping and I still have to locate a new clutch cover gasket too. Any ideas or suppliers? Will a proper sized washer placed behind each spring upon reassembly accomplish the same thing? I haven't taken it apart yet to see if they are out of spec, but I'd like to be prepared to do the job once and not leave my bike unusable for a week waiting for parts.
  18. Me & a buddy are going to meet in Raton, N.M. and travel to Durango, Gunnison, Georgetown, Idaho Springs, Colorado Springs, and then I'm heading home to Wichita Falls, Texas through Pueblo, Amarillo, etc. We have this trip planned to take about 8 days and to take our time. We will be going toward the end of June. Does anyone know of any "must-stop" places we need to eat at? I hear Colorado is lean on Mexican food.
  19. This guy figured it was time to clean up the old, traditional motorcycle wheel... and did it in spades! Although I'd prefer some suspension springs somewhere... (warning... 7 meg mpg file) http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/hubless.wmv
  20. Not sure if this is the right forum for this, but I though t someone might like the deal, not sure if the price is good or not. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=350131807220&sspagename=ADME%3AB%3ASS%3AUS%3A1123&viewitem=
  21. What are the symptoms of carbs with the slider springs (under the cap on the top of the carb, pushes the needle down) too soft? Does it cause any adverse running problems? Thanks in advance.
  22. OK I admit I’m a bit lazy. The fork seals were replaced a few months ago including (I’m assuming) new oil, now I’m installing progressive springs. Do I need to drain the fork oil since it’s still almost new or can I just pull out the old springs and put in the new? Thanks, Al PS how do you get the old spring out, with a coat hanger or something?
  23. After a lot of thought and consideration I have traded the Venture for a new Yamaha Rhino. Loved the Venture but the wife has kind of lost interest in riding this year. We only took 1 short trip to Eureka Springs, I think it has something to do with the grandkids. If I can I will get another bike to ride to work next spring but it won't be a touring bike, I'm getting old would like something alittle lighter. Anyway I wanted to say there are a bunch of nice folks and a lot of valuable information on this web site. I have learned a bunch from you'all and enjoyed meeting some of you at the Eureka Springs Rallys. Now if I can just find such a good web site for the Rhino I will be happy. So long and ride safe! Danny & Cyndi
  24. Here's one I hope someone's run into, just got 4 new carb diaphragms for the 83, changed over the needles and low and behold the diaphragm springs will not go to the bottom of the plastic barrel, goes in fine about an inch, then hits a lip. Waiting for Zanotti to call back to see if they have any insight, can't believe this is right as the springs fit fine in the originals, part # is 41r-14940-00-00.
  25. We made it home from the springs 09:45, no rain. Teri and I would like to thank everyone for a great time. It was nice to see the venture family. I would like to send out a extra thank you to Bill for the wonderful job he did with the Meet. everyone ride safe Michael & Teri.
