does anyone know about the difference in gearing between a kph vs mph speedometer. i have a kilometers per hour unit that the odometer went belly up and Bongobob was kind enough to give me a unit that is miles per hour. the gears inside both units look identicle, is the front wheel gearing different or is the gearing in the speedos different?

Okay here's one i've never heard here before. Since I've had my 85 there has been an intermittent noise like a bad bearing somewhere in the front end. I finally located the noise as coming from my speedometer. It happens most on cold mornings and is high pitched and at times so loud it leaves my ears ringing when if finally stops. It used to stop after i got below 15 mph. Now it will continue until the bike is fully stopped. It will stop after a few miles and then only periodically return while riding before stopping all togther. I pulled the speedometer cable and oiled and greased it . I checked the ends for wear but there is none. So its not the cable it has to be in the speedo itself. What the heck could it be and is there some way to fix it without having to replace the speedo all together? Its so loud that my son could hear it while riding beside me as we rode through town. Help!

We went on a night ride last night and on the way home I developed a problem. The speedometer went erratic and the engine started missing badly. The speedometer quit working and the bike ran normal. Intermittently the speedometer would come on erratic and the miss would return then go off and run fine. Made it home but don't know where to start. Any one have this problem? I am thinking ignition switch or coil. Thanks Rod

I just purchased an '87 Venture Royale. The guy who I bought it from just installed a new speedometer cable. When he hooked everything up he found that the speedometer works but the odometer stopped working. So now I am left with this problem. Does anyone know how I might troubleshoot this? Is it a matter of disassembling the front gauge cluster and simply reseating the cable or is there something more sinister lurking for me? THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Has anyone ever removed the UGLY, BIG, Takes Up Too Much Room speedometer on the Gen II ? I don't care for the lower pods (intake stuff?) nor the funky speedometer unit on my bike. I think I need to make a trade with someone who has a nice Gen I and wants a newer bike. I think I like the looks of the early models better. ALTHOUGH..... mine is running great now that I had it worked on yesterday

This is why I moved to flyover country. I dubbed a few of my favorite "Folsum Prison Blues" tracks onto one of my wife's Brittany Spears tapes. (She didn't need it anyways) Cruising into work, how else would I want to start and end my work day? Don't pay any attention to the speedometer needle, it's not accurate anyways... http://video.yahoo.com/watch/5215301?fr=yvmtf

Is there a way to correct the speedometer or just be sadisfided with it whe way it is like the tape deck? Why would you build a speedometer wrong & keep it that way? In 50,000 miles you realy have 54,000 Miles. That should be E-legal. Good if you are selling Bad if your buying! I think Yamaha needs to update just a little.

I'm replacing the front tire and thought i would replace the front wheel bearings while things are apart. I have picked up 2-6303ZZ replacements locally. Should both bearings retain the metal shields? Currently on my wheel....I notice the left side bearing outer shield is removed....the side where the speedometer drive plate is right next to the bearing.....is this correct? Should I apply any or additional lube when assembling? Thanks.

tonight after i turned onto my street I noticed that my directional didnt stop blinking after 100 yards or so liek normal so i took another trip around the block and that when i noticed why as my speedo wasnt working I parked in the garage and checked the cable when i took it off the wheel fitting I saw that the end was a twisted mess. I tried to turn it by hand and it was not spinning at all. so i tore into the dash and removed the cable off the speedo and the cable snins freely. stuck it back on and it dosnt turn at all connected to the speedometer? could somthning have come loose in the guage or is it probly shot? can the speedometer be changed out of the dash pod or is a new pod required? thanks for any help. oh ya would a dealor still be able to get one or is it a E Bay only deal now? I was hopeing to go to Thunder by the bay in a couple weeks and it would bve nice to know how fast im going.:headache: ps I read in another thread about a bearing in the speedometer, could this freeze up and be repaired? just looking for where to start looking when i tear into the guage/

I have an '05 RSV with (of course) the electronic speedometer/odomoeter. The speedometer face has both mph and kilometers per hour shown, but my question is can the odometer function be switched from miles to kilometers electronically (maybe by a dealer only), or would I have to get a whole new 'Canadian' speedometer unit?

Installed the SpeedoHealer last summer. Speedometer originally read 8.5% high. I now have a GPS and find that the speedometer reads correctly. However, the odometer now reads 5% less than actual. Not a major drawback, but something to keep in mind.

After installing my new GPS unit earlier. I am noticing that my speedometer is out a bit from my actual speed as calculated by my GPS. I have heard that the GPS units are incredibly accurate. My '06 RSTD seems to be out on the high side. When my speedometer reads 120, my actual speed from GPS is 112. This can't be designed on purpose, so in that case, is there a fix?

Hey Y'all, I might be blind and my site searches are not working to well. I could have sworn that I saw posts on fixing a ribbon cable behind the console that gets messed up over time. I am doing the speedometer lube stuff (pulled the whole thing out and tore it down to the speedometer, I should have read the instructions better) as mine was squealing louder than the radio (iPod and Radio volume combined) this Friday (whew, was it cold that day). Since i was here already, i figured i would check it out. Can someone help me out on this? PS. JT, I am still here!

It's a known thing that the speedometer in our bikes is off. It reads roughly 8 - 10% or so too high. My question is, does the odometer read that same amount off, or is it actually accurate? Some of you with a GPS should be able to answer this easily and without any guessing.

I was driving down to Deal's Gap and was surprised to see my speedometer indicating 120 Kph yet my GPS was saying 111kph. That is quite a large difference. Is anyone else experiencing a similar difference ? HAs anyone approached theie dealer about it and if yes what what the response ? Thanks

I've had my 04 RSV for about a year and always suspected that the speedometer read a bit high. My suspicions were comfirmed on a recent trip to CA, when my GPS read 73MPH but my speedo read 80. I double checked by using a stopwatch and mile markers ans sure enough, it read about 10% high. I'm guessing that the odometer is also off by that much, but I haven't checked yet. Anyway, I looked around on the web and found the Speedohealer unit with a plug and play Yamaha harness for $94 (with free shipping). Seemed like a high price to pay to correct my speedo, but then I remembered how much my last speeding ticket cost. I have a heavy right arm, i like knowing exactly how much over the limit I am, and want my odometer mileage to be accurate. I bit the bullet and ordered one for Christmas. All I can say is that the installation was a breeze and the setup was equally simple. After I calibrated it using the formula on their website, my speedometer is accurate now to within 1MPH thoughout the range. Check www.speedohealer.com for details. Now that I've already spent the cash http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_cry.gif , I was wondering if I should have brought it to the dealer for a warranty speedometer repair instead. Anyone ever have any luck with that? Seems to me that 10% high is outside of the error spec for a new vehicle. http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_question.gif http://www.venturers.org/Forum/images/smiles/icon_question.gif
