  1. Hi guys: Does the Royal Star have an electronic speedometer/odometer? If it does, where is the sensor unit mounted, and can I install one of those sensors on my first gen' which now sports an electronic speedometer?
  2. Hey guys and gals, I find myself with a bum speedometer and am trying to track one down. If anyone knows of anywhere or anyone I might be able to find one from, please let me know. Feel free to PM me if need be. Thanks a bunch!! Jay
  3. Yesterday, right after pulling out into traffic, I glanced down and noticed that I had no speedometer reading or odometer visible on the dash of my '03 RSMV. I reached down and wiggled the key and everything came back on. The trip home was around 120 miles and this happened a couple more times. Each time I was moving on down the road and do not know if the headlights and such were working, just that speedometer area was not. Has anyone else experienced this, and if so what can be done to fix it? Thanks! Don
  4. I'm looking for a speedometer for my 86VR. The odometer and trip meter have stopped working. The speed indicator works just fine. Took the thing apart and the nylon worm gear on the main shaft has stripped. Everything else on the instrument cluster works fine. I have a trip to Glacier Park planned fot the first two weeks of August and would like to know how far I've traveled plus keeping track of the gas so I don't run out. I have never really trusted the gas guage. If anyone has one available I would certainly like to buy it. For what its worth, the 83/85 speedo and tach have a different color face than the 86/93. I'm not sure if I could switch them out or not.
  5. Just discovered that the Baron BA7430 riser spacers won't work with the RSTD because of the speedometer. Can anyone recommend risers that will work with the speedometer, my hands and back are hurting. Thanks!
  6. I have som troubles that is electrical related. First problem was that the clock turned off with the ignition and that the turn signals sometimes failed to work. I did find corrosion in a connector behind the front lamp and after some cleaning these problems disapeared:cool10:. Now does the revcounter is showing to little and is sagging (reacting very slow to canges) . I assume that I should search for more faulty connectors, or ? The fuel meter did play me a trick today; suddely the level sank like a stone and the warning light started to blink. After a couple of minutes the meter rose and all was well again:080402gudl_prv:. And, non electrical; the speedometer shows a bit to little (not so important), have compared with my sons Z1000J and also by judjing from the rate at wich I pass cars... But the odo and the trip is stuck! I Had a similar problem with my Yamaha TT600; fixed it by splitting the meter and lubing very gentle with WD40 at the right places (oxide/rust). Is it difficult to split the speedometer on a XVZ1200?
  7. My 2001 speedometer was out by about 10 kilometers per hour. Now that I have a 2004 RSV I checked it with my GPS and it is also out by 10 per cent as well. It is 10 percent below what is indicated on the gauge. Has Yamaha not addressed this or is there a fix for this other than just accepting it and adjusting accordingly? My 1800 Wing was always dead on with the GPS. Thanks for any comments or advice. Chris
  8. The trike I have is based on an 05 midnight venture . The trike was "cobbled up " rather than using a complete kit. The speedometer jumps around and the cruise control doesn't work , due to the unevenness of the input at the pickup level , I think. The impulse wheel used is a fan from an alternator , and the pickup is mounted at the side of the wheel. The fan is not mounted on center of the universal joint. It wobbles. So back to the original question. What is needed to make the speeometer pickup system work properly? Help!
  9. It looks like my speedometer finally gave up the ghost. Anyone know what speedometers are compatible with an 84? I find everything from 83 to 91 but no 84s. I figure it would be easier to replace the whole instrument console than the speedometer itself but wanted to make sure everything would play well together before I buy a part from a different year. Thanks.
  10. I have discovered that my speedometer is off. Someone told me that by changing the rear tire size this will help fix this. Does anyone know if this is true or even possible?
  11. Had a problem start this year. When I hit a bump the speedometer needle would shake a little. While on my long trip it got worse, sometimes to the point where it would drop right to zero, then come back when I hit another bump. This also takes out the odometer and the cruise control. I have removed the fairing and lowers and checked all wiring since it seemed it was when the front hit a bump the problem occurred. I also took all the connectors apart, checked them and put back together. Still same. Any ideas? Thanks in advance
  12. While I realize there have been about a zillion and a half threads about people 'realizing' that their speedometer calibration is off, using a speed-o-healer, ignoring it all together, etc etc. I had an interesting realization last night while I was avoiding being pulled over puttering back across Vancouver. Last Christmas I received a Ram-Mount for one of the GPSes I have. I have now used it twice (both times in Vancouver) Partially because I have it so why not, and partially to make sure that I know how fast I am going in the appropriate units. As we all [most likely] know, the MPH side of the speedometer (on U.S. models at least) is off by 5-10% depending on who you ask, where you check it and most importantly whether you are using your turbo attachment or not. All kidding aside, I have found now through a speed range of ~10 to ~60 mph (10 to 100 kph) checked at intervals that were distinctly marked (ie 20, 40, 60, 80, 100) I found that with the speed held reasonably constant the GPS read a speed that matched exactly (obviously within the error of the width of the needle). Now this had me curious. Upon closer inspection I found (on my bike, which I presume is the same on others) that the MPH scale is not aligned properly with the KPH scale which contributes to the incorrect speed indication. Now before you say 'oh that guy is an idiot, of course it isn't perfectly aligned because the needle has to point towards the numbers and being that the radii of the curvatures of the speed range indicators are diffrent and the 'needle' points radially outward but is not a perfect , of course they wouldn't look visually aligned'. I solved this issue by looking at how fast my indicated speed was in KPH both on GPS and on the speedometer and verified that while the reading in KPH was correct, the needle was pointing to the wrong point on the MPH scale. So, how is that for a fun fact? By the way, I am in Canada where they use KPH -- which is why I have the GPS set to KPH and am paying attention to that. Anyhoot, just thought I would share my findings while I try to wake up enough to get some work done.
  13. I have a 2008 Royal Star Venture & just finished a SpeedoHealer v3 installation in about 1 1/2 hours... calibration is set for -10%. It is great to have an accurate speedometer. The v3 models can be found on eBay for 55 to $70. I recommend it to all. JohnB
  14. Had my GPS on my "new to me" 2000 Venture. I noticed that my speedometer was over estimating my speed by about 10% vs. my GPS. I am assuming that the GPS is accurate. Any thoughts on what could be up with the bike that would make the speedometer overestimate? Thanks, Bob
  15. Howdy. I have an 83 venture standard bought in about 01'. My original speedometer quit working last winter cable snapped, popped the speedo needle off and with a new cable it doesn't work at all. Found another cluster on ebay and bought it with the understanding that the speedometer works. Put it on, and speedometer stays on Zero but the odometer works and seems to be counting the miles pretty accurately. I removed the cluster and opened the cover and the speedo needle seems to be free, not stuck, and always returns to zero if moved a little. How could the odometer & tripmeter be working when the speedometer isn't ? I bought it fairly cheaply so it's not worth shipping back. Thanks in advance. DesertRider
  16. I went out for a short ride tonight, and since it was almost dark i was almost idling home the last few miles. (alot of deer out running around) Anyway i noticed a faint ticking sound in the front end. It sounds like it ticks about once per revolution of the tire. I havent really ridden my bike this way before, so never have heard anything like it. I doubt it could be brakes, cause it isnt constant. My next thought was speedometer cable? Tomorrow i will try to jack the bike up and spin it by hand and see if i can hear anything. Any ideas woul be appreciated. Oh it has a little over 7000 miles on it
  17. Need speedometer cable for 1988 VR. Thanks
  18. I have a couple more questions. 1988 venture First my speedometer is off about 15 to 20 miles an hour anyone have any idea about why or how to fix. I also have a wine which I think is the speedometer. I heard a really loud squeal when i get up to a certain speed, goes away when i slow down. I have seen in this site how to grease the speedometer but I don't know if it is in the head or down at the wheel. Second is there anyway to adjust the clutch on these bikes? When i let out on the clutch it goes almost all the way out before it starts to engage. Third any ideals on why i have a hesitation when I first give it gas. It will do it at almost any speed. Is this what happens when the carbs are out of sync or is this maybe from the diaphragms leaking.
  19. I'm in the process of purchasing a 2007 RSMV and the only thing that I'm really not liken is the speedometer display. Does anyone make a modern speedometer cover to replace the 1940ish styled one?
  20. I have a question. I brought a 2000 venture mm and i was wondering if the speedometer is suppose to move like a speedometer in a car because mines sticks as I am accelerating and then when I let off the throttle it jumps to the speed I am going. The cruise control also wont stay engaged if the speed drops going up hill. I need to know if anyone else has experienced this problem and how they resolved it. Thanks for the help in advance.
  21. Hi Guys, I could with a bit of advice here.I have a 2000 Royal star venture. My Speedometer stopped working the other day, I have checked fuses and all are OK. I'm thinking the problem is the speed sensor, how do you check these things? Other issues I'm having is indicators wont self cancel, cruise control wont work, engine management light comes on if I hit the rev limiter, I think all these issues can be attributed to a faulty speed sensor. I thought there was a self diagnosis system that checks the speed sensor but that doesn't seem to work even when I disconnect the sensor. Any advice would be much appreciated
  22. My speedometer stops working after the bike is not run for a week or so. After I run the bike for awhile it begins to work. Also the turn signal cancel won't work or the odometer. The problem has worsen, now I can ride all day and it might jump up once or twice. Any ideas? Thanks
  23. Here's the finished product, pinstriping, cleaning, set the speedometer, odds and ends.
  24. It is that time of year to think about lubing the speedometer on the 1st gen. It is usually worse when the weather is cool and probably when the bike has sat for awhile. Even though you don't need the type fitting in the attached thread, it does work good. Other wise, you will need to take the speedometer out of the dash and put grease down inside of where the bearing is that the cable goes into. Putting grease up into the square hole where the end of the speedometer does not work because the hole does not go all the way through. Anyway check out this thread. 25. Look in the lower left of photo 1. My speedometer twisted off and is laying on 110. I never did catch the guy in photo 2.All I seen was a blue streak, nice jacket, and good looking boots.
