  1. The other day I ran into a guy that needed to sell a 1983 venture that his father in law had sent down to him from PA. he didn't want it because they were getting ready to move. timing is a great thing, I picked this bike up for $1000 and it only had 24000 actual miles on it, garage stored the whole time not even a scratch. the carbs were gummed up, I went through them, checked the compression it was good 130psi on each cylinder, good spark but still runs like it is only running on half the cylinders. sluggish week. if any one has any suggestions on what to check for nest, PLEASE tell. and Thank You for all for the great website. Steve
  2. Hi Guys, I have had my Venture Royale since 1989. Done all the maint myself...everything. I have been an electronics tech for 30+ years. Last year I replaced spark plugs, spark plug caps with all NGK, along with new 7mm hypolon copper wires. I had always used NGK spark plugs since the begining. In fact I only changed spark plugs every 20k miles or so. They were that good, and my bike tuned that well. This year I have been having "misfire" issues at idle. I finally checked the spark plug caps , wires and spark plugs. 3 spark plug caps measured OPEN(should be 5k ohms) on my digital meter and cleaned all spark plugs...3 spark plugs also open. I use non-resistor type which should read almost zero ohms. I suspect These items are NOT made in Japan or they have changed their construction of these items. These above items only had 3k miles on them. Now I have the OEM parts back in. NGK...Junk I say. Don't get stuck like me.
  3. Something I've always wondered about. First a little about my riding habits. I have a 99 RSV that I have owned since 2000. I ride on average 13-15K miles per year. Around 90% hiway miles and about 50% 2up. I don't race my bike, but I don't baby her either, I don't mind bumping the rev limiter once in a while, but don't do it every day. Now for my question. Why is it that my spark plugs only last around 10K miles at the most? The bike will run fine at lower to midrange RPMs, but at higher RPMs it feels like a miss or fuel starvation. Change plugs and all is good again. I run the recomended NGK DPRE8-9. I've tried equivalent Bosch but there's no difference. When I change the plugs, they are a nice grey/tan color with no signs of eroding, still gaped to spec (hurts my soul to throw them away). Look as good as new. Why can I get 90-100K on my plugs in the car, and less than 10K on the bike?
  4. Just moved up to 08 Venture from V Star 1300, Like moving from a Chevy to a Cadillac. Just wondered if you need to remove riders seat and gas tank to change spark plugs? If removing tank is it a easy procedure? On oil change any alternative to the expensive Yamalube? Like the Venture, took a while to adjust to the additional weight and winding shaft noise but overall happy. I know we are having a hot summer especially in the midwest but it seems this bike puts lots of heat out by the floorboards compared to other bikes. Thanks for any help and happy trails.
  5. I put in new spark plugs ... NGK double checked the gap at .035 ... and now that they are in i have a slight backfire when coming off the throttle ... anyone have any ideas? I can take them all out and check them again but I was very CAREFUL when putting them in so as not to bump them and ruin the gap.
  6. Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum and I'm not sure if this has been discussed before. I did have a good look through the threads but couldn't find anything that could help. So I'm hoping that someone here can help me. I have a Royal Star that I have stripped down to be repainted and some some TLC wotk on as well. Bike 1997 Royal Starr XVZ1300 I have done the following work; Hand Polished Controls New Clutch Cylinder New Foot Controls Resprayed New Battery Filters etc Many other little bits now worth mentioning. I put it back together last week and tried to crank it over and the starter motor spins but there is no spark at the spark plugs. As the starter motor spins and the coils and leads were fine prior to the work I did (it was starting and going fine), I think that the digital igniter might be blown. Does this happen? When I hooked it all up and tried to crank it the first few times I did hear a pop from under neath the seat sounding like a fuse blowing. But all the fuses were fine. If it is the igniter is it better to get a performance after-market one such as the Dynatek 3000 one? Thanks for you help in advance.
  7. So I picked up a 87 venture but turns out it has 40 lbs when hot in one cylinder, front right, put oil in spark plug hole and on re test reading went up to 60 lbs , the other three are good, yesterday I pulled the motor, put some oil down the spark plug hole and with the comp tester on hand turned the motor and the oil pushed out a valve on the exhaust side, so what do you thing ? chiped valve ? bent valve, bad rings ? I did not test any other cylinder with the oil I do have clearance between camshaft and shim. thanks Mike.
  8. After 5 months of on again off again tinkering, my 92 finally runs, not well, but it runs. Got the bike from an estate, as a basket case, last year and actually began work on the bike last July after I found a good drive shaft and differential. It had been torn apart in 2003 after the previous owner twisted off the pinion shaft. Got it all put together last summer. Cleaned the carbs - they were pretty bad, put new diaphrams in, lined the gas tank, checked all the wiring connections, scanned a lot of the threads on here regarding getting these older bikes back on the road and performed as many of the items as I could and thought I was ready to put it on the road in August. Tried to start it up, no spark. Back to the forums, rechecked all the wiring, re ohmed the coils and pickup coil, everything tested ok. Everything was pointing to the TCI, got it out from under the battery, opened it up and sprayed everything down with electrical contact cleaner and baked it in the oven for a couple of hours, still nothing, retested the ignition components again, coils and pickup tested ok - must be the TCI; so I ordered the ignitech unit in November. When it arrived it came with the wrong wiring harness for a 93 and they also informed me that it had the wrong program in it. To shorten up this long story, have yet to get the Ignitech program to work. In retesting all the ignition components, the pickup coil did not read out, out of desperation, I was able to find a pickup coil on ebay in February and changed it out. Still no spark with the Ignitech unit, what the heck, plugged the original TCI in and it fired up. It wuld only run with a lot of choke, but hey, it was running. Let it run for 20 minutes or so and shut it down. Came back to it the next day - no spark and the new pickup coil did not ohm at all. Last week found another used pickup coil, ohm'd it when it arrived, tested good. Drained all the fuel that had been in the tank for the past month and refilled with 5gl of gas and a can of Seafoam. Put it in with the original TCI, fired right up - again with a lot of choke. Ignitech still no spark. Let it run for an hour and a half, was slowly able to reduce the choke to about 1/4 to 1/3. but can't take the choke all the way off and if I give it any throttle it dies. tried it again last night, same thing, fired right up with choke, but can't take the choke all the way off and if i give it any throttle at all it dies; so I still have a carb issue to resolve. Just not sure what to look at - more carb cleaning, more Seafoam and let it work it's magic, new parts, float level,...?
  9. maybe someone here can help me i have a little spark for the front two cylinders back two are running fine tried sea-foam still on the first tank with sea-foam plenty of power going through the gears any ideas????
  10. Hello All. Thanks for taking a look. Little history first, 83 VR. Less thank 6k miles. New to me. Has spent the better part of its life sitting in a yard. So far, I have: Pressure washed Full carb overhaul Bleed the clutch Re soldered the CLASS thingy Changed spark plugs Checked gas tank for rust Some other odds and ends not related After getting my carbs finally done. Put em back on and it ran. Much improved than before. I have not synced yet. The tach is non responsive. I rev it up. It goes down. Let off it goes back up. Thought it was strange. Bike will not rev up past *k RPM. I do know that #1 is getting a spark when I push the starter button. Then as soon as it starts, the spark goes away. Of coarse I am letting off the button when it does start. However, if I tap the button while it is running I can see it get a spark. I know I should not do that. But it was a thought. If I hit the kill switch, I can see a weak spark. If I turn the IGN. switch off, I swear I see a weak spark again. I have checked the plug cap. It was clean. The place it mates with the wire was slightly corroded and loose. I have since cut off till I got good wire and reinstalled with no effect. As I type this its 26*. Its a bit cold to go dealing with it much. I have not checked out anything else. I plan to take the right hand controls apart and clean it. I also plan to check out the fuse holder on the bat. What else should I look at? And how should I do it? I was under the impression that coils either work, or dont. Is it safe to assume that? If she needs a new TCI, I will have to move on. I do not want to give up that easy, but buying a used on on eBay looks out of the picture. Michael
  11. Hi guys, I just purchased a 2009 Venture with only 1480 miles on it. It ran fine when I bought it but now the rear two cylinders do not seem to be getting any gas. I checked for spark and it has lots of spark. Compression seems good. I changed the spark plugs, checked all of my fuses. The bike fires up no problem, I let it run for about 15 mins but only the front cylinders get hot, the backs are cold. Any ideas? I purchased the bike on ebay from a dealer, not a yamaha dealer, in the States and shipped it to Canada so, I do not have a warranty. Before I take it to the dealer here and then have to see a proctologist, I wanted to get some ideas. Brian
  12. 1987 Venture Royale 30-35K on it. Plastic in good shape. Compressor works but only when jumped with a hot lead (any ideas on this problem?) Picking it up Sunday. Co-worker selling it to me for a good price IMHO. Sat in garage for a lot of years but has been gone through and runs. 1 spark plug fouled out. Can't believe I'm actually considering buying this 1gen being a 2nd gen lover. Any idea what the value actually is via guesstament with info given? I haven't even seen it yet but his description is something I believe.
  13. Any way to tell if you have good spark or if your spark is weak in your ignition system:sick:
  14. I am at a loss. I seem to be missing both cylinders on the left side. When I crank my bike (05 Midnight Venture) the right side heats up but the left side doesn't. I have tried replacing the spark plugs but that didn't work. Any suggestions would be very helpful as I am at the end of my rope! Mike:confused24:
  15. Carb or coil????? About three weeks ago I rode the Venture, and all was well. Last week I rode it in to work, and it just didn't have any power,,, When I got to the shop I felt of the pipe covers at the engine, and found that the front left was cold as a cumber. Thought junk in the carb. Got it home and drained the bowl, and there was a very small amount of tinny trash,,,, OK I re charged the carb, and drained it two or three times, and it was clear. Kool.. Ran it for about 20 minutes,, and all seemed good to go all pipes good and HOT. Took it out for a test, and crap still no power, and back firing. Took the tank off and the dog bone to check the plug ( new only 1500 or so on them ) While I had it out thought I would look at the spark. The plug had spark, but I don't know if it is a good spark. I also saw leakage spark coming off the wire just above the boot,,, Not sure if that is good or not. Put the plug back in, and turned off the lights, and started it up. Seems to run great at idle, and no leak ( I could see ) on the wire with plug installed. Big time confused on which way to go now. Can the wire be replaced or it it a coil change, and can a coil break down under power, but seem good at idle. Carb In other words HELP!!!!
  16. i just got this venture cuple weeks ago, 86 1300cc, sat basicly outside since 03. it was under an awning i cleaned the carbs top to botom very very well. replaced carburator diaphrams WHen i got the bike it turned over slowly, i know not a good sign, i sprayed pb blaster in there and turned it over and put oil in there and now it seems to turn over fine THe bike would start when i got it but would only run for about 10 seconds and only with choke fully on, one of the sparkplugs appears to be burning clean and three of them are always wet i dont think compression is a problem as it seems to be 150 plus on each cylinder I HAVE spark, pretty decent spark on every plug , i just pulled my cdi off the bike just to take a look at it, o yea she has 84000 miles, on her, its just hard for me to think TCI when the spark is so good but i have tried everything else that i know off any help would be greatly appreciated really wanna get this thing up and running
  17. I bought my 83 in 4/83 and rode it until a couple of years ago. I gave it to my brother when I found a low mileage 89, but I still maintain it for him. As long as I can remember, if the battery was a little weak, you'd have a heck of a time starting it because the spark was weak when cranking. If the plugs were getting old that made it a lot worse. Mark doesn't ride it as much as I did, so he has this problem a lot worse than I did. The battery on my 89 is going bad and it doesn't have the same problem. The last time I rode it (before it snowed) it'd been sitting about 3 weeks and when I cranked it, it hardly went arouind BUT it fired right up. The spark seems to be a lot hotter on the 89. Do others with 83's notice the same problem?? How about other years?? We all thought the only difference between the 83 and the later TCI units was how the vacuum advance was connected. Maybe there was another difference. Frank
  18. Hello all, I'm back to partake from the "Fountain of Knowledge". My 1996 Royal Star developed a "miss" and would backfire. In doing some checking I found that I have an intermitten spark from cylinder #3. This condition exists when the bike is cold or warm that in my thinking would rule out the coils because from what I have read the coils fail mostly when they get hot. Any suggestions?
  19. Has anyone ever experienced a faulty key ignition causing "no spark" to one of the cylinders?? I thought I had a bad TCI but I tried another and I had the same problem. I fiddled with the key (sprayed a little WD-40 in the key slot) - worked it back and forth a couple of dozen times and suddenly got spark! The bike has kind of been driving me crazy with the lack of spark to that cylinder - then - suddenly spark again... Just wondering if the bad key ignition could cause that symptom or not - best to ask the Venture specialists here on the board. Thanks in advance
  20. well guys my names Bob im new to the forums im and new owner of a 1986 Venture i picked up for 800 dollars its in really nice shape and it ran well for 1 day lol talk about a let down so heres how it started i started it and it was running way rich and when i went to pull out it kept stalling so i checked spark and im not getting spark to the rear 2 cylinders ive seen alot on here about the TCI box and how there at fault for most spark issues and im wondering if its the same problem for me if i know people move them to the top of the airbox but i dont even know where to find the TCI box to move it up and maybe hope that all it needs is to dry out any help would be great thanks all
  21. I hope I am doing this correct. I have recently purchased a 1990 Yamaha Venture Royal, 1300 cc. I would like to replace the spark plugs but can't seem to get to them all. Can anyone help me? Do I have to remove the battery, and air filter? Thank you... Hope i am not stepping out of bounds by reposting this for Slim.
  22. I have an 83 Venture that will not start using the starter. The engine turns over then backfires. the fuel pump does come on. I can bump start and it runs great once started. I have checked the battery, it has a good 12 volts. I have replaced the battery cables with 4 gage wires. I also have replace the old fuse box with a new blade type box. I get an initial spark to all the plugs but after a revolution or two no spark except for the left rear it always seems to have a good spark. I have pulled the spark plug wires clipped have inch off each end and re-attached with no change. I have read something about the ignition switch causing the back two cylinders to not fire. What do I need to look for with that? I have the faring off to be able to get to the coils and the TCI. I will be testing the coils resistance today. I have service manual. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
  23. My bike is a 1992 Venture Royale. I had thought my TCI is bad, still might be, but I am stumped on what is going on with this bike now. This is an intermittent problem... sometimes the bike works just fine. I have spark at all 4 plugs when initially cranking, maybe for 1-2 cycles and then no spark to any of them. The bike will crank over once , sound like it wants to fire and then nothing else.... If I try long enough I get a really loud backfire. The spark seems like it might be a bit weak also. I'm googling and searching the forum and purusing the manual, but not sure what to check for since it has spark on the initial revolution. Could this be a pickup coil problem.?
  24. I am trying to figure out the problem that is been confusing me. I have had my carbs cleaned and was still having an issue so I pulled the wire off of the right rear plug and put in another and placed it to the block to check for a spark. I noticed a small spark when I turn bike over than stopped until I reached 4500rpm then recieved a big spark. repeated the same test to theleft rear and noticed no spark at all. Would this be a wire or coil issue? I have a 1985 Venture royale 1200 cc
  25. i have an 83 i believe that is first generation. i have no spark on any cylender. was told could be ground. going to start by checking ground and then proceed to tci. any other suggestions. bike ran fine then just would not start. i just recently replaced the guage asssembly but it ran fine for a week after that
