  1. Last Friday, the storm that went up the east coast changed from rain to snow just south of me. at about 10pm I lost my cable and internet service. I still have a few snowy channels on the tv, but that is it. Before it was over, we got at least 6 inches of heavy snow that is still here. It is supposed to be about 47 by tomorrow, so it should start melting soon. I don't remember a time in the past that I looked so forward to coming to work. The first thing I did when I got here was to go on the internet and pull up VentureRider.org. Finally, the withdrawals are subsiding and I am trying to get some work done. Man, this has been a tough 2 1/2 days. I really feel for those without power and internet. I have been there, done that and it ain't fun. RandyA
  2. Guest

    OK you east coasters -

    - come on. How much snow did you get? We have around 10" here between Lancaster and Harrisburg PA
  3. I am thinking about heading down towards West Virginia to try to make some extra cash before Christmas and seeing how we do not have enough snow in the Detroit area I am willing to go south. Anyone have too much and need it moved. :snow::snow:
  4. The city just changed thousands of traffic signals to nice energy efficient LEDs. Now that we have had our first real snow of the season, it was determined that the nice efficient LEDs run so very nice and cool that they can not melt the snow and ice off of the lens. So now there are nice "efficient" diesel trucks and crews running around with ice scrapers attached to long poles to scrape all of the snow and ice off of the thousands of traffic lights. There have been several accidents already because the traffic lights can NOT be seen. I wonder if they are saving enough on electricity and longer bulb life to pay for the trucks and crews to be running around cleaning the lights?????
  5. Another big blew-it by the forecasters. I went to bed last night expecting to have all kinds of fun playing in the 8-14 inches of snow that was being predicted for the last week. All I heard on the news was about this monster storm coming, the Great White Death, gloom and doom, dogs and cats living together, ........... Live reporters scattered all over the area, a reporter at the salt piles, reporters by all of the plow trucks standing by, reporters at major intersections, ......... Well I woke up this mourning nice and early to have time to deal with the pinheads on the road for my 20+ mile commute, and when I opened the door to leave there was nothing, not a single bit of snow on any paved surface and Maybe a half inch on the grass, and I did not find any snow anywhere on the drive in to work! I realize that there were some people that got hammered like Madison WI with 17 inches down and another 6 expected with 40 mph winds just to keep it interesting. I feel cheated. I like snow. Its fun to drive in. Yes I am a little demented. OK rant over, I'll let everyone else get back to digging out.
  6. Just finished installing a new 13 HP engine, new belts, fresh gas and oil.....the snow blower is ready to go.....BRING IT ON!
  7. We had no snow as of 6 AM yesterday, and now......
  8. Guys- I know some of you may have interest in this. I NEVER intended to ride in snow...but we got stuck in a once per 20 year phenomena. We had an inch on our tent at 9AM. Don's battery failed- we had to charge it, but the Texas State Park let us use their charger, and by 3 we were on the road. The pavement was freezing, but by days end the snow stopped. We had Walmart chemical warmers but it was miserable. I am now in a nice cozy Motel 6 in Victoria, Texas. It will be in the 20's when we leave tomorrow. I'm just glad we got out of Houston before this crap hit us! I started a new blog, an since I like theatrics, am going by the blog name of Skeeter Speaks. You can find it here: http://skeeterspeaks.blogspot.com/2009/12/motorcycling-in-snow.html Please take a look if you want. I'll be posting more when we get south of the border. Thanks to all that have helped me in the past!!!!
  9. I don't do cold !! it's getting cold down here ! :cold:when the snowbirds come down they are not supposed to bring the cold with them :cold:and they are bringing the worst thing down this year ! the Idiot weather man said on tv that ----- you ain't gonna believe it ---- SNOW FLURRYS ,:cold::cold::cold::cold::cold::cold: IN SOUTH TEXAS !! I don't do snow ! so if know body heres from me Friday you know i saw snow and am in shock !
  10. So far this November, ... We've had 230 Millimetes of rain (average is 180) We've had 30 hours of sun (average is 66) Our ski hills have all opened early (there's 3 main ones) and our "Olympic" hill (Whistler) has had more snow than ever for November. geeesh... what's yet to come I wonder.... all a result of el ninio (sp?)
  11. Once the fog lifted this morning we headed out for the Foothills parkway and the Dragon's Tail. What a fantastic day! The weather was perfect. High 40s when we left this morning and warming up fast. I can't believe how this bike handles the twisties. I only scraped the floor boards a few times. It's the first time I've been on the dragon with the RSV. Last time I did it, I still had the Road Star. We continued on to Cherokee and back across the park on 441. Would you believe there was snow on the ground up there? I came 500 miles south of Canada and find snow. Who'd of thought?
  12. Took a great ride this weekend thought I would share a couple of the nice fall pictures, snow in the forecast soon so it was at least a gorgeous day to end the season.
  13. For the Cody bunch, it seems we dodged a bullet. Local weather channel announced that there was 15" of snow in Red Lodge Montana yesterday (10/06/09). Furthermore, the same weather service noted that the Mt. Rushmore monument (official visitor center, I suppose) was closed due to snow.
  14. Wow I can't believe the difference, a lot less weight and a whole lot warmer, not to mention the ease of getting into them. Has anyone else made the transition snow bibs? Oh and my knees a lot warmer too.
  15. I saw this URAL for sale in Mpls. Another bike I would like. Then I could ride all year in the snow. I definitely have a problem. Too many bikes I want and not enough
  16. I know I've seen it somewhere here. But, for the life of me I can't find it now. The instructions to installing passing lamps on my RSV. These are the yammy brand. Any help out there? Snow is almost all gone....with some luck we should be able to get the bikes out very soon!
  17. Welcome to Ontario Just in Time for Summer Vacation THE RULES OF RURAL ONTARIO ARE AS FOLLOWS Listen up City Slickers! 1. Pull your droopy pants up. You look like an idiot. 2. Turn your cap straight, your head isn't crooked. 3. Let's get this straight; it's called a 'dirt road.' I drive a pickup truck because I want to. No matter how slow you drive, you're going to get dust on your Lexus. Drive it or get out of the way. 4. They are cattle. They're live steaks. That's why they smell funny to you. But they smell like money to us. Get over it. Don't like it? Hwy 7 & 401 goes east and west, Hwy 15 & 416 goes north and south. Pick one. 5. So you have a $60,000 car. We're impressed. We have $150,000 combines and hay balers that are driven only 3 weeks a year. 6. So every person in rural Ontario waves. It's called 'being friendly. Try to understand the concept. 7. If that cell phone rings while an 8-point buck and 3 does are coming in, we WILL shoot it out of your hand. You better hope you don't have it up to your ear at the time. 8. Yeah, we eat meat and potatoes. You really want sushi & caviar? It's available at the corner bait shop. 9. The 'Opener' refers to the first day of deer hunting season. It's a religious holiday held the closest Saturday to the first of November. 10. We open doors for women. That is applied to all women, regardless of age. 11. There's little for 'vegetarians' on the menu. Order steak. Or you can order the Chef's Salad and pick off the 2 pounds of ham & turkey. 12. When we set a table, there are three main dishes: meats, vegetables and breads. We use three spices: salt, pepper, and ketchup. 13. You bring 'coke' into my house, it better be brown, wet and served over ice. 14. You bring 'Mary Jane' into my house, she better be cute, know how to shoot, drive a truck, and have long hair. 15. Ontario Hockey League and Minor Hockey is as important here as the Maple Leafs and Montreal Habs, and more fun to watch. 16. Yeah, we have golf courses. But don't hit the water hazards -- it spooks the fish. 17. Colleges? We have them all over. We have Universities and Community Colleges. They come outta there with an education plus a love for God and country, and they still wave at everybody when they come for the holidays. 18. We have a whole ton of folks in the Armed Forces. So don't mess with us. If you do, you will get whipped by the best. 19. Turn down that blasted car stereo! That thumpity-thump crap ain't music, anyway. We don't want to hear it anymore than we want to see your boxers. (Refer back to #1). 20. TWO inches of snow & ice isn't a blizzard - it's a vacation. Drive like you got some sense in it, and DON'T take all our bread, milk, and bleach from the grocery stores. This ain't Alaska, worst case you may have to live a whole day without croissants. The pickups with snow blades and tractors with snow blowers will have you out the next day. A true Ontarian will send this on!!!
  18. Greetings all, While scouring through all the older posts for anything I could learn about my 84, I stumbled across this old post. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=22081&page=3 I did download the manual that mbrood (Mike Brood) so kindly had posted on 6/12/08. It does contain some info that I could not find in the service manual. THANKS MIKE! We had around one half inch of SNOW this morning here in Madison, SD. No riding, still only 50 at 6:00 P.M. Take care all and ride safe. Dave
  19. I ran into a bit of snow last weekend. They called for a 30% chance of light rain or a possible snow shower. I could've dealt with that like I have before. But instead it turned into a short blizzard. I was finally able to get off the highway and to a tavern where I got some odd looks when I walked in. The drinks sure tasted good after that. Then I called for a ride. Lucky my friends Butch & Jackie over at Bateman's Tavern let me park it there over night and come get it in the morning.
  20. Woke up this morning to 6" of snow. They say the Robins get snowed on three time before spring is truely here, well this is the third time here in S.W. Minnesota. O well the the bike's at the dealer getting alittle warranty work done before it goes out of warranty. If your riding today put on a few miles for me.
  21. It was 45 F yesterday and 95% of snow gone and this is what I woke up to this morning:crying::crying::crying:
  22. I just purchased a Piggy Backer XL and decided to have the tires balanced. Guy looked at me funny because I guess nobody balances trailer tires! It may have been a waste of money but at least now I know. All 3 were off...2oz...1-3/4oz....3/4oz. Lug Nuts are to be torqued to 100 ft-lbs Before I put the trailer together I had 4 straps made up with a "D" ring on the end and attached them with the hold down bolts. May never need them but if I want to use a cargo net or tie something down so it don't shift they are there. Now only another month or so and I can ride!!!!! (because of the snow that is!) Keith
  23. Woke up today to 5+ inches of snow here in central Illinois. Was really wierd because it was classified as a "Thundersnow". Rain changing to snow with thunder. Didn't bother me too much because the bike is still dismantled. Good excuse though to get back into the garage and get at it because it is supposed to be 58 degrees tomorrow! Funny thing about the tear down - I was just getting new tires and then things got carried away! You guys have a lot of great mods for the 2nd gens and I've had a lot of fun learning about the bike. Jinksy
  24. flb_78 was saying tx -amarillo was gonna get a blizzard last night in chat......... well little did i know its coming here...... winter storm warnings out for us possible upwards of 8 inches of snow........YUCK and wind.....sposed to switch over late tonight and snow all day tomorrow... I thought we were done for the year.........and we took the snow blade off the tractor..... enough is enough already..... I hate winter.....there goes my magnolia tree that just opened up we go from no coats or jackets one day back to winter coats and hats and gloves the next.....missouri is weird.....guess its better than the old ohio winters tho.
  25. scotty
