  1. Well its time to buy tires on my 2006 rstd,I have read all the posts on what size is best .I have decided on the Avons .My question is this, I am 5 10 185 lbs , looking to improve slow speed handling , do a lot of two up . I do not have leveling links or have I altered the stance of the bike .Will the 150 stock size improve handling for me without any other changes . Iam concerened with high speed stability as well. Any sugestions for someone my size, I would love to improve slow speed handling while maintaining high speed feel . Thanks for any guidance !!!!!!
  2. the first week I lost 44 pounds , after my stomach surgery..(mostly water, but it works for me). down to 355 pounds now.. how far can i go? but it will slow down from here out.. still cant tell it tho.
  3. 2nd Gen owners... You may have a slow water leak.... and not even know it. This slow leak can only be seen when the fuel tank has been removed because of its location. The water hose clamp I found leaking is located just above the right hand side engine dog bone. The leak will appear as a white powdery substance on the rubber hose, or on the hose clamp. You may even notice a spot or two on the TOP of the rear valve cover located on the right side front jug. Look carefully because it looks like dirt. I was able to turn the clamp tightening screw about 6 turns before it finally became tight on the hose. NOTE: Do not over tighten the hose clamp where it cuts into the rubber hose. I enclosed this picture to help you see what it will look like.
  4. two days ago, rode the '86 VR and it ran great. Got on today and the clutch lever is super stiff. Slow to pull in and slow to come out, doesn't take forever to come out, maybe a full second, but doesn't snap out like it did last ride. System was worked on and fluid flushed last fall by Yamaha dealer, has been perfect all summer. What happened in the space of less than 48 hours sitting?

    1/4 mile time on RSTD

I was just curious how fast or slow a RSTD runs a 1/4 mile and Speed. It sure feels slow compared to my FJR.
  6. Is it possible to install a 2nd Gen Swing Arm, on a 1st Gen. ?? Why??? If a guy wanted to try to use a CT on a 1st gen --- Hmmmmm Its a slow day, and got to thinking
  7. I've been PM'd almost to death here lately in regards to Saddle Bag liners . Because of my heavy schedule , I have not been able to get to make any here lately . Well the Boss said "OK" to make them here at work . I have the patterns for the 2nd Gens and they will work for the late model 1st Gens . I also have the pattern for the earlier 1st Gens , but yet made any yet other than for a few here . So here's the deal . All 3 bags (2/saddle bag liners and 1/ trunk bag liner) for &75.00 per set . Made either from 1000 denier cordura or 1050 Ballistic nylon (black only). I have other colors , but they are more military patterns . You can call the shop here to place your order @ 910-325-1000 (High Speed Gear Inc.) M-T , 8:00-6:00 , Friday ,8:00-4:30 . I'm going to get several sets made up ASAP and will continue to make them as they are ordered . We have a small break in work and estimate a 2 week slow down in other production (end of physical year government spending), so it would be best to place your order as soon as possible , because as soon as this slow break ends , no telling when I will be able to get back to these liners . BEER30 P.S. I have patterns for the Vulcan Nomad as well .
  8. Wife and I are heading to the Smokies in the morning. Will go over and jump on the Blue Ridge Parkway and see how far we can get before Saturday. She is not big on long days in the saddle so we are going to take it slow and easy. If we only make it half way then that is OK by me. Just getting away for awhile is worth it.
  9. My tach has always been slow on my 86. This was nothing to be very concerned about but it was always on my mind that it could be this way because of something electrical about ready to fail. What with the tach receiving its signal from number 2 coil which in turn runs it through the TCI box then on to the tach. I have always read anything on this site that was tach related in hope of pinpointing what it was that made mine run slow. I have been told that my TCI could be faulty, my #2 coil faulty, bad ground to maybe just a boggy tach. Well the search is over! After running the diagnostic check of the wiring to the TCI. NOT IT. Check of coils. NOT IT. Adding a second ground wire. NOT IT. The problem was the tach itself. I removed it from the housing to look it over and clean it using some electrical contact cleaner. My brother-in-law was here when I took it out and he said that it just looked as if it needed lubed up to free it up. He grabbed the can of Sili-kroil and began to ever so lightly lube the needle mechanism while moving it toward redline and letting it go. After five minutes of this. THAT WAS IT! It is now free as the RPM it reads. Upon further inspection it seems that on the backside of the instrument cluster box that houses the tach and speedometer, on the tachs side of it. There is a unplugged hole that looks as if it should hold a light but there is no provision for one there. Being a 86 this hole has let moisture and the elements into the tachs cluster for 22 years a very unnecessary and troublesome hole that is now plugged. More than enough time to gum up my tach. So if your tach is boggy don't rule out that all it might need is a good clean & lube.
  10. I Lowered the rear of my bike using the Baron's kit and it did make a difference on my seat height and at higher speeds the bike handles good, but I noticed at slow speeds, the bike gets swirly. My question is, has anyone lowered the front too and if you did, was slow speed handling better? Also, with the rear lowering kit I have to be careful where I park to make sure the bike does not fall over. I'm sure by lowering the front too I will have to modify the sidestand. Please advise.
  11. July 24, 4pm, I got distracted looking at the scenery. At about 50 mph I came up behind a car stopped for a left turner way too late, locked up both wheels on my 03 Midnight Venture, and was able to slow to about 35 mph before deciding to take the (very soft) berm on the right. Witnesses said the bike flipped 4 times in the air, landing on its left side, while I plowed shoulder first into the dirt. I remember seeing the bike in the air over me, and feeling relieved that it missed me--you know how everything goes into slow motion. A state trooper gave me a ticket for "lane control failure" in the ER. I'm home from the hospital, but still on oxygen because it hurts too much to get a deep breath. I have a broken collar bone, a broken rib, three broken cervical vertabrae, massive bruising, and a dead right arm. They say my arm will probably return, but it may take up to 2 years. My Shoei helmet absolutely saved me. The dealer has the bike and says it is probably totalled, but won't know for sure until later this week. I've been riding for 45 years, and would not have believed you could get this much damage at that speed, without hitting anything but soft dirt. This was entirely my fault, and I consider myself very lucky. Now I need some advice. I've never filed a damage claim in all my 59 years. I suspect the insurance company will be looking out for their own interests, but what should I do to protect mine? Thanks in advance, Ken Stewart
  12. Is it just me or is the server occasionally slamming the brakes today?
  13. Forcast for Skid Inn looking good. I'll probably ride in the back of the pack. I want to try out my glare filters in these transitions lenses. It should be a sunny weekend and all that slow moving harley look a like chrome in front of me. You know that waxed buffed and shiny second gen type. Come to think of it I bet Skid has been waxing that 86 for a month to.:stirthepot::rotf:
  14. Bought a new battery for the scoot today but it seems like the starter is dragging. Last fall my battery bit the dust so I thought the slow crank was because of the battery. Starts slow and the battery is giving all it has. New battery is charged fully. Maybe time to tear down the starter and clean it up inside? Any ideas?
  15. Hello All, I got the tags for my '87 that I have spent about a year off and on redoing. I never rode it, bought it as a project. I think I have the carbs pretty good, but there is one thing that I noticed, and don't know if this is a characteristic of the Venture or if I need so further adjustment. When I was riding, when I would pull the clutch and wind off to shift, the RPM's would hang up hi for a little while and not drop right down to shift. Is the throttle response slow on wind off, or do I need to look at something? Thanks D

    New Rider Question.......

Hi folks, I have only been riding about 2 years. Last week the wife and I decided to get a 2008 RSV. Prior to that we rode a Honda VTX 1300S. I realized that there would be a weight difference (The RSV is about 150 lbs heaver), and a much bigger bike overall, so I am prepared to get adjusted to the new rride, and I know it will take some time. I have about 13K on my other bike, so as I said still a new rider. After riding the RSV 2 weekends I seem to be fairly unstable at slow speeds especially riding 2-up with the wife on the back. We are both average size and I am about 6'-1". Don't seem to have any issues flat foot on the ground. I have developed slow speed issues particulary in parking lots trying to turn into parking spaces. Do I just need to give a little more time and be patient? Will the stability come back after I get used to the RSV? We absolutely love our new RSV and can't wait to take a couple of trips together this summer, But I don't want my wife to start getting nerveous (as she has never rode her own bike), and stop wanting to go on rides every weekend with me. Sorry about the rookie question, but you folks seem like a great group and I know that early in your riding days you may have experienced this your selves. Thank you Reggie - Tampa K4DNA:bighug:
  17. Hey guys, my 84 is giving me a fit. I had her out of the garage yesterday and was waxing her, added a little oil, fixed a broken side cover and just getting her ready for a ride. Before I did this I cranked her up and she ran fine. After doing her grooming and upkeep, I cranker her, she started very hard, reving the engine is very slow and she backfires a lot. She wont idle on her own. What do you guys think? I have checked over everything I did and cant find a thing. Thanks
  18. Talking about myself here! The weather in Florida the last few days has been colder than usual. Since the RSTD is kept in the garage over night, I had to use the choke the other morning to get the bike started. After a few minutes of high idle, I pushed the choke in A LITTLE to slow it down. Got on the helmet, climbed on board, and set off for a short trip to the next town for a Dr. visit. I immediately noticed that the bike was not running "right". It was a little sluggish and idled slow. In fact, it even stalled at a traffic light. I thought that maybe the idle had gotten turned down too far somehow so, when I got to my appointment, I turned it up a bit. On my return home, it was still not right. I stopped at a gas station and filled the tank, thinking maybe I got some bad fuel. I started the bike and, for reasons I can't explain, I leaned over and checked the choke knob. IT WAS STILL OUT! No wonder it was running like crap. O.K. you cold weather residents, stop laughing!
