  1. Does anyone know a good shop that can work on my bike. I need a tire changed and an oil change before returning to California. I have an 83 Venture. thanks Al
  2. Hi Guys, I'm looking for any advice anybody might have about a good shop in the Denver area. I live in Florida but I keep my RSV at the GF's house out there and I don't have any experience with any dealers in the area. I'd like a good shop, preferably a Yamaha dealer, to go over my rear end. I just don't spend enough time out there to do it myself. I don't see any active members listed in the area, but if anyone has any knowledge to share I'd appreciate it. Thanks!
  3. I have an extra printed copy of the 2nd Gen shop manual. Anyone need one?
  4. Hey all, Does anyone have either first hand knowledge or an opinion on http://racetech.com/html_files/venture.html? The new spring is fairly straight forward, but this cartridge emulator concept is new to me. http://www.racetech.com/images/FEGV2page6L.jpg I've been chatting with the main tech at my local independent bike shop about improving my bikes handling. In addition to leveling links (which I've got ready to go on), he recommends both springs and this emulator. The shop works on all types of bikes, but is most known for sport bike\track bike work. Any comments would be appreciated. What do y'all think? Cheers, Dan P.S. Not sure that I need my venture to every be "flic-able"
  5. So after being tipped off by DarkLeftArm about a 1st Gen carcass in a motorcycle junkyard behind a local shop, I finally stopped in to see what was there. There were actually 2, but one is very gone. The other is stripped, but has some good parts left. The shop seems very reasonable on selling parts off of them. It seems to be a MK1, 83 to 85 vintage. The guy at the shop said he would look for paperwork to confirm actual year. I’m thinking of seeing what I could buy the one carcass for and then strip it down. Wish it was a MK2. Here are some pictures. If anybody needs anything off of these, let me know. Thinking maybe the hitch sale would pay for the carcass and then i could 'Pay Forward the other parts and stuff.
  6. So, after 2 years of having a couple of local shops (with the same migrating staff) adjust carbs for poor fuel mileage and backfiring (particularly on deceleration), I went to another shop after they couldn't seem to fix the issues. He was asking a series of different questions about valve adjustments, etc that the other shops weren't. He said he wanted to do a leak down test...One reading was a wopping 83%. So, I understand I am in for a valve job after getting jerked around with carb adjustments for 2 years to try to fix my measely 200-250 km per tank and decel backfiring. The new-to-me shop is a one-man shop, charges a much more reasonable hourly rate than others I have been going to, and has been seemingly much more knowledgeable. One question...just because I am tired of being jerked around....what does a valve job on an 03 Venture generally go for? I understand between the leak-down test, the valve job and whatever else comes into play I am looking at the better part of 2500-3K. Thanks
  7. Hi: I sent the bike to Florida last fall where it is being stored in the Titusville area. We flew down last Decemeber and travelled to Key West and back. Awesome experience. We are flying down again in mid march for some more touring. I will likely need the rear tire replaced while in the Titusville Florida area. Is anyone aware of a shop somewhere in this area where I can wait while the wheel is removed and tire mounted/balanced. I will supply the tire. Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time. Jim
  8. Well 7 months and 25K miles and so far the transmission has been replaced. The satelite radio is still acting up.I have a few more electrical issues since I got the bike.last shop visit was 26 days lets see how long they keep it this time.Yes I started the lemon law paperwork so we will see what comes of it.Evidently you cant ride a Honda like a First gen. Never had a transmission problem with the Venture other than the soft washer causing the second gear to pop out. thats been fixed for a long time now besides that I dont count that as an issue seeing as how it was an original problem with all of the 83s and 84s. I will keep you all updated on what comes of the lemon law paperwork hopefully it will be a good thing for me. Jeff
  9. I must have been a good little boy!!! Now if he'll just bring me a shop....
  10. You've been waiting for them with bated breath, so without further ado, here are the 2011 Darwin Awards: Eighth Place In Detroit, a 41-year-old man got stuck and drowned in two feet of water after squeezing head first through an 18-inch-wide sewer grate to retrieve his car keys. Seventh Place A 49-year-old San Francisco stockbroker, who "totally zoned when he ran", accidentally jogged off a 100-foot high cliff on his daily run. Sixth Place While at the beach, Daniel Jones, 21, dug an 8 foot hole for protection from the wind and had been sitting in a beach chair at the bottom, when it collapsed, burying him beneath 5 feet of sand. People on the beach used their hands and shovels trying to get him out but could not reach him. It took rescue workers using heavy equipment almost an hour to free him. Jones was pronounced dead at a hospital. Fifth Place Santiago Alvarado, 24, was killed as he fell through the ceiling of a bicycle shop he was burglarizing. Death was caused when the long flashlight he had placed in his mouth to keep his hands free rammed into the base of his skull as he hit the floor. Fourth Place Sylvester Briddell, Jr., 26, was killed as he won a bet with friends who said he would not put a revolver loaded with four bullets into his mouth and pull the trigger. Third Place After stepping around a marked police patrol car parked at the front door, a man walked into H&J Leather & Firearms intent on robbing the store. The shop was full of customers and a uniformed officer was standing at the counter. Upon seeing the officer, the would-be robber announced a hold-up and fired a few wild shots from a target pistol. The officer and a clerk promptly returned fire, and several customers also drew their guns and fired. The robber was pronounced dead at the scene by Paramedics. Crime scene investigators located 47 expended cartridge cases in the shop. The subsequent autopsy revealed 23 gunshot wounds. Ballistics identified rounds from 7 different weapons. No one else was hurt. HONORABLE MENTION Paul Stiller, 47, and his wife Bonnie were bored just driving around at 2 A.M. so they lit a quarter stick of dynamite to toss out the window to see what would happen. Apparently they failed to notice that the window was closed. RUNNER UP Kerry Bingham had been drinking with several friends when one of them said they knew a person who had bungee-jumped from a local bridge in the middle of traffic. The conversation grew more excited, and at least 10 men trooped along the walkway of the bridge at 4:30 AM. Upon arrival at the midpoint of the bridge, they discovered that no one had brought a bungee rope. Bingham, who had continued drinking, volunteered and pointed out that a coil of lineman's cable lay nearby. They secured one end around Bingham's leg and then tied the other to the bridge. His fall lasted 40 feet before the cable tightened and tore his foot off at the ankle. He miraculously survived his fall into the icy water and was rescued by two nearby fishermen. Bingham's foot was never located. AND THE WINNER IS.... Zookeeper Friedrich Riesfeldt ( Paderborn , Germany ) fed his constipated elephant 22 doses of animal laxative and more than a bushel of berries, figs and prunes before the plugged-up pachyderm finally got relief. Investigators say ill-fated Friedrich, 46, was attempting to give the ailing elephant an olive oil enema when the relieved beast unloaded. The sheer force of the elephant's unexpected defecation knocked Mr Riesfeldt to the ground where he struck his head on a rock as the elephant continued to evacuate 200 pounds of dung on top of him. It seems to be just one of those freak accidents that proves... '**** happens' IT ALWAYS SEEMS IMPORTANT TO THANK THESE PEOPLE FOR REMOVING THEMSELVES FROM THE GENE POOL.
  11. Here is the first look at parts going to the custom paint shop. Post more pics soon
  12. The battery on my V Star 1300 finally died at age of 4 years and 3 months, pretty good lifespan in my thingking, went to Wallyworld as I normally do to buy a replacement battery, normally in the $50.-$60 dollar range...........wrong, they had 2 batteries, one was 59, the other was 86.00, and these are not Yusa, they were Walmart brand.............last battery I bought for the Venture was aroun 46.00. Shopped around, no luck , so I went to a scooter shop here in Newnan, he was $4.00 cheaper for the Yusa that the Yamaha dealer, when I told him the price difference, he said cant let that happen, he said he would let me have the Yusa for 79.95. So I have found a shop that will beat the big guys prices, I didnt expect him to come down by $30.00. I will have it by Thursday, and I can start riding again after not being on the bike since Thanksgiving due to my surgery.
  13. During our annual spring ride, my younger brother (Scott) let all the oil out of his Honda Shadow Aero 1100 in western Texas. He has been debated whether to part it out, or have it fixed. The local shop advised it would be $1500 to $1800 to fix it depending on what needs replaced/repaired. Well........ I have fooled Scott into thinking I was a decent wrench and he is having the dead bike shipped up here (from Dallas) for me to work on. Just what I need - another project. Like the 2 dead bikes in the shop aren't enough. Anyhooo, it will be fun to tear it apart knowing that if it can't be fixed, I can just buy a used engine an stick it in there. Be about $1000 to go that route. Yeah, I know, if we were to do this, it would have been easier and cost about the same to have the local shop do it. It will all be worth it to watch the expression on my wife's face when this bike is rolled off the truck and into the garage. As of this point, she knows nothing about it and thinks I spent too much time/money on the bikes already (she may have a point, but I will not acknowledge it). Anybody have a Honda Shadow 1100 engine laying around? I believe anything from 1998 to 2004 will fit. RR
  14. Put the 06 in shop today days before the warranty is up. My radio control head has been locking up. I took it there about a month ago and they could not duplicate problem. When i took it today It locked up right there in front of the service writer and a tech. both siad it looked like it would need a new control head. This is the first troubles i have had with my venture. Knock on wood
  15. The Haircut One day a florist went to a barber for a haircut. After the cut, he asked about his bill, and the barber replied, 'I cannot accept money from you, I'm doing community service this week.' The florist was pleased and left the shop. When the barber went to open his shop the next morning, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen roses waiting for him at his door. Later, a cop comes in for a haircut, and when he tries to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you , I'm doing community service this week.' The cop was happy and left the shop. The next morning when the barber went to open up, there was a 'thank you' card and a dozen donuts waiting for him at his door. Then a Member of Parliament came in for a haircut, and when he went to pay his bill, the barber again replied, 'I cannot accept money from you. I'm doing community service this week.' The Member of Parliament was very happy and left the shop. The next morning, when the barber went to open up, there were a dozen Members of Parliament lined up waiting for a free haircut. And that, my friends, illustrates the fundamental difference between the citizens of our country and the politicians who run it. REMEMBER: POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS SHOULD BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON.
  16. Is there a standard bulb I can buy from an auto parts store or is there a bulb I have to get from a bike shop, internet, etc... Thanks
  17. Has anyone encountered THIS one before? At the end of the season last fall I had my lines and cables switched over to black braided steel which look good, feels good.. However, at the end of the season, I was no longer able to engage cruise control on the bike, either in 5th or 4th no matter what I did.. the lights would cycle through but when you released the throttle it wouldn't engage and then start the lights cycling all over again as if you hit a huge bump that disengaged it.. I have a very deep suspicious feeling that this started due to something the Yammy shop forgot to hook up or broke or pooched somehow. I KNOW it worked before going into the shop but stopped working after I got it back from the shop, but it was a few weeks afterward before I actually tried to use it.. I'll pulling the tank off the bike this week to change plugs, so now is the opportune time to have a look to see if anything is amiss.. Can't ride the bike yet, still winter up here.. but if there is something I can check now, I would certainly appreciate any help forthcoming.. I don't know what to look for at this point.. I'm gonna NEED my Cruise Control for the big trip in May lol Thanks again M8
  18. Today I ended up on the side of the road in Virginia near exit 12. Front tire blew out, it was three in the afternoon and AMA roadside assistance expected me to know where to actually tow the bike to for a fix. I called my wife instead and she looked up shops online. Found a place called Stuart's Cycle Shop in Henderson NC. She called, and even though he is not open on Saturday, he came up to Virginia got the bike on a trailer and took me to his shop. He had tires in stock, fixed me up with an E3 and got me back on the road pretty quick. The charges were 60 for labor, 60 for pickup, and 139 for the tire. Considering that I would probably had to wait in a hotel until a regular shop opened again, I was more than pleased. He was a great guy to deal with, even had a good time swapping bike stories on the ride back to his shop.
  19. Went and had my new front tire installed at a shop yesterday. When I pulled my bike with leaning sidecar around to the shop the mechanics facial expression was ....interesting (shall we say). When he finished he took the bike down the road. This raises the question: Why? I have never had anyone take my bike (or my car) down the road after changing tires, I can see why they would but am wondering if this was more the result of the guy taking the opportunity to ride my rig (remember the facial expression). The problem is that my 3/4 helmet was laying on the passenger seat and he assumed it was tied down :confused07: . Helmet went flying down the road at whatever speed, visor scratched up, rear vent is flat out gone, scuff marks all over the shell with some serious abrasions on the back. Helmet was only about a year old and though it wasn't the most expensive one, it had never been dropped and had no scuffs period. I am at a loss on what to do with this. In short: is it normal for a shop to take a bike out after a (front) tire change? What if anything does the shop owe me for the helmet?
  20. True write up in the Flint Journal. Guess you could also say Ice Cream and Booze don't mix. EGELSTON TOWNSHIP — Jeremy Allen Baldwin probably wishes the tub of lemon chiffon ice cream he allegedly stole from an Egelston Township shop Sunday hadn’t melted during his intoxicated walk back home. Had it not been for “splatters” of melted ice cream leading investigators from Joni’s Cones, 5283 E. Apple, to a partially eaten tub of ice cream and Baldwin’s cell phone, the 22-year-old Egelston Township man may have gotten away with it. http://media.mlive.com/chronicle/news_impact/photo/9518430-small.jpgMuskegon County Jail Jeremy Allen Baldwin, 22. Instead, Baldwin is facing a 10-year felony for allegedly breaking into the ice cream shop early Sunday morning during what police say was a drinking bender. Baldwin, of 859 Chandler, was arraigned Tuesday in Muskegon County's 60th District Court before Chief Judge Harold F. Closz III on one count of breaking and entering of a building with intent. A preliminary examination is slated for 9:30 a.m. May 10. Closz set his bond at $20,000 cash or surety and — noting that Baldwin is unemployed — granted him a public defender. According to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office report, Baldwin had been drinking “whiskey and beer all night” Saturday and early Sunday before walking from a nearby party to the ice cream shop. Police said Baldwin allegedly entered the shop through a window and once inside, ate ice cream and ransacked the place before walking off with the 3-gallon tub of lemon chiffon. Investigators at the scene found Baldwin's shoes and followed “ice cream splatters on the sidewalk” eventually to a cell phone that was traced back to Baldwin, whose wallet was also located in the general area. On Tuesday, Mike Bowen, 26, one of the owner’s of Joni’s Cones, said Sunday's incident was "odd." Bowen discovered the break-in had occurred Sunday morning when he drove by the shop and saw a pair of shoes outside the door and screens ripped off the windows. Upon further inspection, Bowen realized nothing — other than ice cream — had been taken. “He took a 3-gallon tub of lemon chiffon ice cream that he left on Apple Avenue,” Bowen said. “He also ate some of a 3-gallon tub of Blue Moon that was left inside.” Bowen said because the shop hadn’t been opened for the season, there was “no money there.” “I don’t know what he planned on gaining from it, besides a trip to jail,” Bowen said. Once investigators identified Baldwin as a suspect Sunday, they spoke to the still-intoxicated man at his mother’s Chandler Street home and again at the sheriff’s office, authorities said. Baldwin told police during the interview that: “If you found my shoes next to the ice cream shop door, then I must have broken into it,” the report said. “He said that it wouldn’t surprise him or anyone else if he did break into this business because he does do stupid things like that when he is drunk,” the report said. Baldwin told investigators that he has a “drinking problem” and on Sunday likely “blacked out from all the alcohol he drank.” A friend who had driven Baldwin to the party Saturday night was interviewed Sunday. That man told police he is aware of Baldwin’s “problem with drinking” and referenced a previous night of drinking at a friend’s Twin Lake home. “He said that the next day they found him miles away sleeping in someone’s yard, and he had no idea how he got there,” the report said.
  21. I went by the new Yamaha shop going in on St Rt 801 here in Rowan county today. It looked as if it wont be long till grand opening. I have not heard anything on the radio yet though. Will post when it opens for business. It is at the St Rt 801 to Cave Run Lake exit from I-64. It is only 1/4 mile from the interstate. I heard that they will also be selling Honda. Fuzzy
  22. I couldn't remember if I had already posted this or not, did a search and couldn't find anything. I installed these a few years ago right before Vogel and haven't had any problems with them. These are flag mounts for Harley Davidson Saddle Bag Rails. They fit on RSV and RSTD bag rails with no modification. Just have to remove the bags to install them. I have small flags on them now that I use for long trips, but they came with bigger ones. They cost me about $ 100 each at a little shop I found. They come with an American Flag, POW flag and a crossbones flag. They are made by Kuryakyn, Part# 4208. Here is the website is you want further info: http://www.kuryakyn.com/Products/854/Side-Mount-Flags-Kit Just thought I would share with everyone.
  23. Grab a beer boys ....this is a long one. Ok ...two beers. Ok, here's the problem. A '95 Lincoln Towncar 4.6. About 2 years ago I went to leave for work and the car would crank like crazy but no spark. Checked battery and it was well charged and everything seemed to be fine except it would not fire. I tried everything I knew about Lincolns and finally had it towed to my oldest friends shop. He is the ONLY person I have trusted to work on my vehicles. Honest and straight up shop that does what is needed and no screwing around. His service staff is top notch and well trained. So he has it for the day and calls and says it's fixed. The ignition module was bad. That was all. Everything else was fine. Only $240.00 for the module and $75.00 for the tow. Picked it up and it was fine. Started great as it always had. Then......13 months later......it does it again. Same trouble shooting process and the tow to his shop. The ignition module was found to be bad again. Plugged in a new one and it fired right up. But he did go to bat for me and got the first module replaced by warrenty. It was out by a month but they covered it. I asked him to keep the car for another day and do a full trouble shooting rundown on it to see if he could find if there was something causing the modules to fail. He did.....and found no problems at all. Then.........6 months later it did it again. He had a mechanic run a new module to where I was 30 miles away and we plugged it in and it fired right up. Again. And this time the module could not be covered under warranty. Crap. Another $240.00. So back to his shop and we spent an evening going through the cars system. Had a couple of his techs hanging around as they were curious, and I was holding the beer cooler. The only thing that seemed to keep coming up was a possible problem with excessive resistance causing the module to fail. Most likely culprit....the plug wires. We tested each and every wire and found none showing to be bad. I replaced them anyway. So some time passed. Until last Sunday. And again...same story. Rerun. Ok, so it's sitting in my garage being defiant. Much like myself at this point. I've talked to my buddy and and his techs and they are baffled. In doing my research and reading the service manuals I know the computer in the car needs 10.5 volts to operate, but they usually won't act up until 9.5 to 10 volts. I've owned several Lincolns in the past. This much I know. LOL! Going back to the battery I made sure I've got that available. When cranking I'm only dropping to about 11.9 at the lowest when I've been cranking quite a few times. Battery is being kept at full charge during all this. I'm not making any progress guys. I'm willing to drop another $240.00 for another module IF I know it will last. There has to be something causing this to fail....and it seems to be happening more often. And besides that....it has rained every danged day since it quit starting. The bike looks like hell. That has to stop. I need some advice. Thoughts?....ideas?.....advice?.....magical cures?....donations to buy another car? Dancing in the rain...... Mike
  24. Commuting to work today about 65 mph with cruise control on and felt a slight hesitation and then a very loud squeal. Pulled over to the shoulder to check things out. Did not see anything abnormal. Got rolling again and when I started passing 40 MPH the sound came back again and the entire bike seemed to be very rough. Called a tow truck and had the bike dropped off at the shop. The shop could not find anything wrong. Anyone else ever experience this? I suspect the front brakes were binding or a bad bearing. Shop said the brakes and bearings were good. John in San Diego
  25. After 8.5 years I sold my Vmax with the idea of buying a Venture. I came close to jumping on a few first gens and also a few second gens. Had a 99 all picked out but when I made the call they had sold it... guy emailed me after and said he had a 08 with 1100 miles on it. Checked the warranty date and held my breath for pics. Made the deposit that night. 10 days and the hole in my shop will be filled. She won't be as quick but I can always borrow my old max if I wanna go fast. I am anxious to see how the comfy people live. Thanks for all the ideas the forums have planted in the last few weeks...my wallet hates you all! Frank
