1. Installed new windshield what you think? Joe
2. Well I got my notice today my new shield has been ship and should be here on the 5th. I ordered 9 weeks ago. I ordered the GT medium ,tent and vent can not wait to get it put on. Hope to get more air in summer. This was a good week to test as forecast is as follows for the next week 100+ up to 104 on wed.
3. I saw these in a motorcycle dealer near my place ,Scorpion EXO 100 . There new around here first time sold here in Quebec , at least what I was told . I like the shield going up in the helmet . Anyone here know anything about these helmets .
4. My wind shield is to tall 17'', it should be right under nose, about 15''Trying to look thought the Shield when wet ( can't see . Problem can you Cut it off while its on Bike? Can't a Window Guy cut it. Or do i have to Buy a new one. 2006 don't ajust. Need some Ase. Guys
5. I took a trip to the Clearview factory last evening to pick up my shield. They are located about 35 miles SW of Denver in a small community in the mountains. Their modest set up was pretty impressive. The owner has been making shields for over 20 years. They make every shield by hand and place a lot of emphasis on quality control. They produce hundreds of shields and ship all around the world. We discussed the recent "NC" ad video link. John gave me a link to one of their competitors sites that I think pretty much covers all the angles on windshields & their materials. Hope this answers your questions about the material debate. I also was able to snag some scraps that I will test with a hammer later. Check out this site. www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Fairing.html#Windshield Thanks, DNB
6. There is a small heat shield on my exhaust by my right footpeg. It had cracked and been fixed by a PO, but it is cracking again now. The shield seems to be part of the larger exhaust, and so not easily replaceable. Given that it is chrome, is this something that can be welded back together, or is it a soldering job, or is there some other fix like JB weld that might hold this together. Thankfully, it isn't highly visible, since getting that chrome look back may not be easy either.
7. A couple of questions: 1. I'm 6' and, if I sit up straight, I can see over the stock shield. With the XXL I've Heard tell of people, shorter than I, being able to see over the XXL. Is there any truth to this? What are your experiences? 2. Does the air move water up and off the Clearview shield better than on the stock? This is also something that I've heard. Some say that the Clearview has more rake to it which makes the water push off of it better in the rain. Thoughts and comments. Thanks all.
8. Hello, Im a new member with no more hot foot. First off, I'd like to thank ventureriders.org. I thought I would share my experience with you of my '06 RSTD. It's very disappointing when the temp. rises above 75+ degrees off the engine. I've heard other members complain about the heat. I have no problem with my right side, but the left side of my bike is bad. And I also noticed that when the fan comes on at a stop, the heat blows down on my left foot. The same thing happens down the road and it makes matters worse. To solve this problem, I thought I would install a small heat shield and see if this helps. This all was before I installed lower vents and kuryakyn foot pegs. So I decided to make a small heat shield out of stainless steel, its very light and easy to bend. First off, I pulled off the rubber foot pad and then cut it to the length of 8 inches long, and then bent it to a 90 degree angle on one side. I made it 4.5'' tall in the front, 3.5'' in the rear. It gives it a nice taper. Then I put a radius on each corner at the top. The easy way to find a center hole, take a little grease, put a dab in the center of the bolt head. Now you can set it in place, lean it towards the bolt head, and there's where to drill your pilot hole. Make the hole just large enough to fit over the groove on the linkage. If you need to, you can tweak your bend so it leans tight against the linkage. Now you can put the pad back on, and tuck it in against the shield, holding it secure. This seems to work out great for me when its warm out. Give it a try. Maybe paint it, or a different metal, or whatever works best for you. Now you can take it in, or out, whether its cold or warm outside, or for just cleaning matters. I hope this helps fellow members out. 9. Well today was the 1st time I've been able to get out and ride this year. There have been good days, but life always seemed to get in the way. Took a day off work which was nice because there was not as much traffic in the day time. In getting ready last night I was surprised to find that the tires and shocks were still exactly were they were supposed to be. 1st time I think that has ever happened. The other thing that I found was that all the windshield bolts under the chrome piece were severely loose. I think when I put the new shield on I babied them a little too much to ensure I didn't crack the mounting tabs on the shield. I also got to try out my new J&M headset. Was going to just use the mic on my 1/2 helmet to move away from the hand held mic I've been using. I just couldn't bring myself to cut off perfectly good speakers for the 1/2 helmet, so I went back to my open face. I will have to say I really liked the sound, but it will take some getting used to for the tightness around my ears. All I can say is I feel like a new man:thumbsup: I hope Spring keeps working its way here.
10. Front lighting on a budget. I like other drivers to see me at night and day! They are not the RSV classic look and add nothing to value of bike. I spent only $35 on these from WalMart. Mounted on front side reflector brackets (removed reflectors) and fork shield brackets.
11. I did a search & found nothing about hand guards. Has anyone here put them on their RSV? I have a Clearview Shield coming soon, does this better protect the hands from the cold winter wind? Thanks.
12. I have to replace the windshield on my 05 Tour Deluxe. The insurance is paying for it so cost is not a factor. I am considering the Clearview shield because it has been talked about here so much. I wear an open face helmet and did not mind looking throuh the stock shield. I am intrigued by the extra width of the Clearview, but am concerned about having to look through the top curve of the Clearview. So far rain and mist have not been big visibility problems for me. A search has not revealed any comparisons between the stock and the Clearview. So far most of the threads I have read those who have gone to the Clearview was because of cost. Looking forward to your valued opinions. It is becoming clear to me that while healing up I have way to much time on my hands. Hope I am not driving others nuts.
13. My bad - I just found Newman's post - sorry for the repeat.... I have an appointment on Thursday at a local plastics shop to get my shield cut down. I have to do it - I can't stand looking through it in the rain or when there are lots of bugs on the shield. I am a little nervous about how far to cut it down - I have to go low enough to look over it so probably about 4 inches from the top. My fear is that may be too much and then I would be disappointed. I don't want to end up looking at the edge though, got to look over it. I am curious if you've done this and how it went. How much did you cut off and how did it affect the air flow? Do you get more buffeting, how about your passenger? Do you regret cutting it. I read some of the threads about the Clearview's as a replacement and may go that way but not yet... What about the shape? Did you end up with the same shape as stock or did you flatten the curve a bit? I'd love to hear your stories - I found an article online about how to do it myself but power tools and I are a bad mix, usually resulting in a poor finished product and multiple sutures for me ;-) Andrew
14. Material saved for my info from earlier discussions: EDB RSV -Windshield an Rain Posted by: landpig On: 08-01-2006 12:33 PM Hi everyone, just got back from the Mountain Fest Motorcycle rally in WV. Had a Great time an met some fellow Royalstar Riders down there. I'll try an post some pix's when I get them uploaded. Well reason for the question is me an the navigator got caught in a cloud burst twice. No problem on rain beadin but it became unviewable driving plus the inside windshield an mirrors fogged up. I literally had to pullover on the line ( cause those coal roads ain't got no shoulders). WV cage drivers are very patient an good drivers they ain't in a hurry an gave us respectable distance. Any advice on product applications that won't degrade the windshield or options is appreciated. p.s. it was a little nerve racking an scary not being able to see at all ! Thx in Advance:Bunny: ************ Posted by: Tom On: 08-01-2006 01:49 PM I would try just a little on the shield...I used it and did as the instructions said and I nearly messed up my windshield. It would not come off till I got a high speed buffer and worked on it for 3 hours. I am not saying That some may not have had that happen but it even says not to use it on plastic type windshields on the instructions. Again NOT saying some have had luck with it,just what happened to me and others on this site. Tom ************ Posted by: rdttex On: 08-01-2006 01:59 PM I also carry rain x with me. when I see a possible rain cloud ahead I pull over an wipe a small amount on both sides. I've been doing that for years without any problems. the only other option is to buy a shorter shield. unfortunately in Texas I haven't had to use rain x in several months. maybe some day it will rain. ************ Posted by: Carbon_One On: 08-01-2006 03:20 PM Maybe the guys using the Rain-X have the watercraft formula. I know I won't use it on my bike thou. I use the Honda Plexis Glass cleaner and it does make the water nead up & flow off. Larry ************ Posted by: kckx270 On: 08-01-2006 03:29 PM Here in Florida we get alot of thunderstorms in the afternoons. A couple of things that help that I've found. Plexus plastic polish does ok. Plain lemon scented Pledge belive it or not helps too. Neither item will totally elimenate that particular concern, but does help. I also use Mothers chrome polish on the glass portion of my mirrors. Haven't had a problem with them fogging. ************ Posted by: kwtrains On: 08-01-2006 03:30 PM hello i have a clear veiw windshield just got it a couple of weeks ago thay recomend using rain x i have not tryed it yet but i will kevin wisor 1999 rsv jax fl ************ Posted by: Ace On: 08-01-2006 04:55 PM Whenever I clean my windshield, I put a coat of Meguires carnuba wax on the windshield, both sides. Have been doing this on my last 2 bikes and have never had a problem seeing through the windshield in the rain. It makes cleaning the windshield a whole lot easier as well. ************ NO NO Not for Me Posted by: Pilot On: 08-01-2006 05:17 PM No rainX for me. I have heard to many horror stories about using that. I use plain ol turtle wax, but have found that pledge all surface spray wax works just as well and it makes your ride smell good. You can pour some into a small plastic spray bottle and take it with you, it works great for me. ************ Posted by: Brad T On: 08-01-2006 07:37 PM I too had this problem and was wiping it with the back of hand just so that I could see. Problem was that I noticed I scratched the inside of the windshield Must have been my ring. It is not bad but if the light hits it right there is many little scratches, SO BE CAREFUL. Brad ************ Posted by: Denden On: 08-02-2006 08:07 AM I've got a Clearview windshield, and because of the way it's formed or slanted, it sheds water a lot better than the stock one. I use Plexus, and the water just beads up and blows away. I have no problem looking thru the windshield in the rain. ************ Posted by: Black Ice On: 08-02-2006 08:36 AM I was going to say the same thing. Ya beat me to it. I use plexus too. The rake of the Clear View seems to allow the water to run off much better than the stock shield. Cheers, Gary B ************ RSV-Windshield an Rain Posted by: ediddy On: 08-02-2006 08:55 AM I have the clearview windshield and I got caught in a downpour last sunday. Going 50mph I didn't have any trouble seeing through the shield. I clean my shield with Honda proline spray polish. I have the xtra large shield with the vent. I am completely behind the windshield. ************ Posted by: kjcole On: 08-02-2006 09:04 AM The Yamaha windshield is a coated Lexan, and the coating is not compatible with the standard formula Rain-X made for glass. You will damage the shield. The Clearview is not coated and so Rain-X will work. I'm not familiar with the marine variety. I use spray Pledge on mine to clean it, but it doesn't make a huge difference in the rain. Kelly ************ Posted by: ryder On: 08-02-2006 05:52 PM the replacement windshield on my bike is a slipstream, I don't think it's coated with any thing. ************ Posted by: Denden On: 08-02-2006 09:16 PM I've got the Clearview that is 16 inches high, and 2 1/2 inches wider on each side, without the vent. But mine is last year's style, before they re-designed it with more slant. Mine is good, but the new ones are even better, and look better. J&P Cycles also carries the same windshield as the JC Whitney windshield. If you want the shorter one, check with them. part no.ZZ76250 clear or ZZ76251 tinted "http://www.jpcycles.com"
15. Hi all, My '83 VR came with a pitted windshield, which can't be bettered with anything that I've tried. Whatever it is, it is there to stay. So I am interested (depending on what the cost would be) of replacing it. However, the present shield is of a height which is a little uncomfortable for me. The top edge of it cuts smack-dab through the middle of my sight, and I find myself either raising my head to view over it, or lower my head to look out beneath it. I would like to get one somewhat shorter than the one I have. Would anyone know of a place where I might be able to get a hold of shorter, used one? And maybe offer direction to where a new one might be looked into, providing that there is no info on a used one. Advanced thanks.
16. Just got my new Nolan N102 n-com helmet - man, do I love it! Some great improvements over the N100E that I have been using for three years. I loved the N100E too, but she's yesterday's news now that I have had my head in the N102!! (The N102 n-com is $250 at Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse, and the Platinum color is very close to the 2005 RSV) Both the N102 and N100 are modular flip-front helmets. The N102 is proportioned a bit differently, giving slightly more forehead and chin room (both front and sides of the chin). The new latch release mechanism is really sweet - much easier to use than the old one, once you figure it out. Just pull forward with your thumb on a little lever in the center of the chin bar, causing a bigger lever to push out from the front of the chin bar - squeezing these two together causes the helmet to open. The shield ratchets and covers are significantly improved. Both helmets have Nolan's proprietary anti-fog shield that works really well, and the N102 has a new dark 1/2 shield outside the main shield that works like sunglasses. Nolan calls this the VPS (vision protection system). I am a little disappointed that the VPS is not extra dark, as it will not make a significant difference when riding directly into a setting sun, but it let me make one simple mod that solves that problem too. I just put a strip of blue painter's tape inside the top of the VPS shield. This is above the normal line of vision, but allows a slight tip of the head to completely block the direct rays of the fire ball. Here are a couple of pictures: That last one is with the VPS shield flipped up and the main shield down, but it looks a little strange because the whole front is flipped up too, so you are looking at the top of the helmet through the shield. For someone who already has the N100E with extra shields, the shields are ALMOST interchangeable. Actually, without the VPS on the N102, they ARE interchangeable. But to use the VPS shield too, you need a little notch cut in both sides, like this: A rotary tool with a small steel cutter works fine to modify the older shields. I modified my old extra dark shield so I have both it and the VPS for summer riding. On to the Headsets. I have the cheapest J&M clip-on headset on my old N100E, and I have been very pleased with the quality of the sound. I ordered the mid-level 277 series for the N102 n-com. Love the way the helmet is designed to take an integrated headset and the way J&M used that for theirs. The sound of the 277 series is better, but not by a huge amount. Although the mid-range is more crisp, the bass is not as pronounced as it was with the cheapies. I verified this was the speakers instead of the helmet by unplugging the speakers from the old one and putting them in the N102 after I had completely mounted the new headsets. This weekend I am meeting my brother who has a new set of J&M 584 series (their best, and lot more expensive). I'll compare them and report back next week. Ride safe, Goose
17. GREAT write-up from Melon13. I recently took my stock mufflers off my new Venture and added Road King Classic mufflers and have been very pleased with the installation. I wanted to keep the Venture heat shield and add it to the RK pipes for a better look so I took the heat shield off the stock Venture pipes and attached to the RK's. For the installation I picked up two Harley Davidson muffler clamps for the RK pipes at the local HD store for $8.95 ea. After installation I also drilled out the rear baffle of the RK's with a bi-metal 1 1/8 inch hole saw and got the sound I wanted from the RK's. Drilling is optional of course and some riders have drilled out both the front and rear baffles using a drill bit extension and others just like the stock RK sound without drilling. I picked my Road King Classic mufflers up on E-Bay, one word of caution, the Classic style RKpipes have the slanted rear which I wanted but there are some RK pipes that do not have this style and have the bullet style rear end similar to the Venture factory pipes, make sure you get the style of RK pipes you are looking for, especially if E-Bay is your source. I also purchased an adapter from our member, SofaPilot who made a mount for mounting a RK pipe to the rear exhaust mount of the Venture, this eliminated the need to cut off and re-mount the stock rear bracket from the Venture pipes. First step is to remove your rear side saddle bags and then remove the stock exhaust, loosen the muffler clamp underneath the front of the pipe and remove the bolt from the rear of the pipe and pull the stock pipes off the bike, since I had a new bike this was a breeze, but this could be harder for those who have older bikes. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/1.jpg After removal of the stock muffler I took my Dremel tool and cut the three rivets holding the stock heat shield to the Venture pipe. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/2.jpg Looking at the heat shield next to the RK pipe in the following picture you can see the square opening for the muffler clamp, just below this square opening cut the heat shield in the center, DO NOT cut the top section above the opening, just the bottom section, this will allow the heat shield to expand around the RK pipes. Next drill three 1/8 inch holes in the heat shield, I drilled them near the spot welds. Now put the HD muffler clamps over the muffler end and position the heat shield so that opening is to the inside, hint, the factory dimple in the HD classic pipes goes to the inside, I aligned my opening on the same side as the dimple in the pipes with a slightly downward angle so that I could easily get to the muffler clamp once the muffler is on the bike. Be sure and put the HD clamp on BEFORE putting the heat shield on the RK pipe. Now drill through one of the 1/8 inch holes in the shield and into the RK pipe and put ONE rivet in. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/3.jpg I then installed the RK rear bracket I got from Sofa Pilot onto the RK pipe. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/4.jpg Next thing to do is put the muffler on the bike, I used a rubber hammer and with some gentle pings to the bracket area, (NOT THE REAR OF THE MUFFLER) Mine went on fairly smooth and I temporarily attached them using the RK rear bracket. Now carefully align the heat shield so that it is even all around and not touching the muffler, you can then mark the remaining two holes with a pencil or felt tip and take the RK muffler back off the bike, drill the two holes where marked and place rivets in the remaining holes and remount the RK muffler. When I remounted the RK's for the final time I went down to the local auto supply and got some anti-seaze compound in a tube and made sure the exhaust pipe coming out of the Venture was clean and coated it with anti-seaze before the final install. Instead of marking both holes I ended up being able to drill one of the holes while the RK muffler was mounted and the heat shield was aligned, I then took the RK muffler back off and drilled out the third hole and riveted. I then used a standard drill with a bit extension and then drilled out the RK mufflers after installation from the rear of the bike. I used a magnet to retrieve any metal filings left. inside the muffler. RK's installed, you can see the rear mount attached to the RK pipe. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/5.jpg Finished product. http://www.venturerider.org/rkmufflers/6.jpg Hope this helps anyone interested in doing this modification, I love the sound that I achieved with the Road King pipes.
