  1. my 05 RMV NEEDS break pads on the front, my question is when I order do I have to order 2 sets or do u get the pads for both sides in a set when u order for the model? i know this may sound dumb but i really have no clue...
  2. Hi folks, I have a 97 Tour Deluxe. I am looking for a decent and affordable highway bar soloution. The ones on my bike are real small and don't look like they are set up well for a set of pegs. Any Ideas? Just looking to be able to get comfy on the longer rides. Speaking of which, anyone had any luck with some kind of a seat cushion? My rear does not seam to be able to hang in there like it used too...

    Cruise

Rode 3 hours in the rain today. I actually enjoyed it...but then I'm a sick puppy. I enjoy riding period! CRUISE CONTROL WORKS! WOOOO HOOOO!!!! All it was was the hose came off the pump or whatever in the lower right faring. It does seem as if it drops about 7 mph from the "SET" speed before the cruise actually kicks in. I have to hold the Accel. to bring it back up to the desired speed./ Any thoughts on that?
  4. Last season the cruise control worked great. Today was the first time out this year, And the cruise didn't want to work. When I left this morning the cruise did work going in to town. We left on our STAR chapter ride, and the cruise would turn on but the set button would not work. After about 75 miles we stopped, and when we started again the cruise worked until the first time I disengaged it, the RES light came on came on as it should, but then nothing. Hit the RES button nothing, hit the SET button nothing. I shut the cruise control off and turned it back on and and the on light comes on, but SET button doesn't work. Though out the day it worked about 4 times with me messing with it, trying to figure it out while on a 400 mile ride. Everything else is working perfectly. When I got home this evening I checked brake switches, clutch switch, and wiring. Went for a ride to see if anything helped, and no go. Got home from the test ride, and decided to check the switches on control switches on the handle bars. Took those apart and cleaned and checked the contacts in them. Everything looked good there. Haven't a chance to try it again. But I don't think that was the problem either. Over the winter I changed the motor oil & oil in the final drive, replace the rear tire, put chrome side covers on, serviced air filters, put billet air filter covers on, put chrome clutch & brake levers on. Any ideas on what & where to check next. Help is always appreciated. Thanks, Ron
  5. Hello from Vancouver, Canada: Just a little over a year ago, I purchased a gauge set from Ponch (tach, oil pressure and water temp) for my ’07 Venture. Unfortunately, life got in the way and I didn’t start installing the set until just this week. With the dash now apart - and cut, I've run into a snag which I hope someone can help me fix. Specifically, I have the Clarion CD Changer installed on my bike. As part of its installation, the multi-pin connector was inserted into the green-tagged cable on the Cassette deck. With the Cassette now "toast", where do I plug the CD connector? Is the grey-tagged cable which used to link the deck to the radio? I'm hoping that's the answer. Another challenge: my old Craftsman 7.2 v drill is too large to fit between the bottom of the upper fairing frame and the inner fairing wall (re drilling new holes in the former cassette frame and gauge set brackets). What size of drill is recommended? Would a new 18v or 20v cordless unit be of sufficient slim profile to do the trick? How about a Dremel tool? And last but not least: Since a water temp gauge is part of my cluster, is it best to wrap the capillary water tube in layer of thin insulation since its bound to get hot? If yes, what material is recommended? That's everything. My thanks, in advance, to any and all who can answer these questions and help me get my RSV back on the road. There are highways waiting for me! In appreciation, Eric S. "alta55rsv"
  6. I will be riding two up from Charlotte to Maintenance Day. We plan on leaving just south of Charlotte NC at about 6am. We will be going straight up I77 most of the way. If anyone would like to ride with us all or part of the way drop me a PM and we will see if we can set it up.
  7. Over on the Ride On thread a couple of guys said they got 24-30k out of a set of tires. That is WAAAAY more than I get. I only get 11-12k per set. It got me wondering what kind of mileage your getting and how your set up. My set up is.... 2010 RSV 2 up most of the time. Combined weight 400+lbs I pull a trailer about 1/4 of the time. E-3s with 40f-40r Lots of mtn. roads.
  8. I am looking for a set of Eyebrows on the Fairing. If anybody has a spare set they would like to sell please let me know. Dwight
  9. My new to me 2005 Venture had been sitting for a few months before I bought it and no suprise two of the pilots were blocked, cold headers after start up, I used some Seafoam at 50% mix but it was a long shot and did not clear the pilots. After reading Freebirds guide to carb removal and buying some 17.5 pilot jets I set to work, it was not as bad as I thought and took me about an hour to pull the carbs fit the 17.5 pilots and put it all back together. I set the pms to 2.5 turns out. She started right up with a little choke and did not need more than a minute to warm on choke, then I went for a test ride, ooooh nice and smooth at low revs, next task will be to balance the carbs but that can wait until next weekend.
  10. Anybody have a jet block gasket for an 83? I probably have to swap another carb body out. I got everything back together and on the bike, and got it started. I was then checking that all the mixture screws were set the same. They all turned execpt for one. I could feel the screwdriver slipping so I took a look. The head of the screw was starting to strip out. I tried a few more times to get it out, but it would not budge. Then I tried an easyout, which broke. They must have had The Hulk put this screw in. It will not budge. Luckily, I have a spare carb body, already soaking in the parts washer. Just need a gasket to swap the jet block into the new carb. Also, anyone in Columbus, Ohio have a carb sync tool to use? I have an old Motion Pro mercury set, but I loaned it to someone a few years ago, and they were kind enough to let it fall over and it lost about half of the mercury. Pretty sure there is not enough left to use it properly. Thanks in advance
  11. It all started Friday before last I bought a toy hauler in southern FL and we started a 1700 mile trip to go get it. We planed to take the long way home so I loaded the Harley on my carrier loaded the bed with pots pans bedding ect loaded 3 dogs and headed out. At every fuel stop the motorcycle on the carrier gathered a crowd. We picked up the toy hauler and loaded our thing in it then headed to homestead FL and set up in an rv park. We spent the next couple of days going to key wesy and the everglades, I even got to take the Harley gator hunting. We moved north and spent a couple of days south of Orlando then headed north again. Today we set up in Clayton GA we are going to spend a week here roaming and riding. I think I may like retirement. Not sure if the pics will load or not.
  12. Does anyone have any experience using the UCLEAR HBC100 Bluetooth helmet communicator? It's microphone is built into the speakers. It says it's military specs and that the wind/traffic/engine noise is eleminated. My current SCALA Team Set is getting a bit old and I'm thinking of changing our headsets out. www.uclear-digital.com/
  13. The radial brake conversion is now a reality !! I received the machined brackets from Bob Meyers (member here) today. Very nice machine work at a very good price for a single set prototypes. They mounted on the bike perfectly. My day job is a mechanical design engineer. I have the CAD tools at home to be able to design & get plastic prototypes made for this conversion. The calipers came from a came off a 2011 R1, with 45 miles on it, they upgraded brakes on it. Not wrecked and in perfect condition. Squeeze convinced me this was the way to go if I wanted something better than the R1 4 pot calipers that I had on the bike. Rotors are 298mm x 5mm from a 2003 FJR. I went through 2 versions of a rapid prototype that the local high school did for me at a decent price. Calipers & brackets have been run through a CAD FEA software package that calculates stresses on a part and determines its suitability for a given application. Original thread on this process if you are interested, started out going to use a set of YZF calipers. Never mounted them. This is the 4th set of brakes that has been on the bike. Stock set, MKII set, 2000 R1 quad pistons, and now 2011 R1 six piston radials. Needless to say, but the brakes are delinked. Rear end is a modified under slung VMax setup that was required to use when the VMax 15" rim was mounted on last winter. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=65445 Have a few more minor tasks to get done & bike will be ready to go. This winter has seen the full V-boost controller added, Marks header, upgraded brakes, painted yellow, rear speakers, replaced some less than perfect body panels with better ones, VMax front wheel, some powder coating, accent LED lighting and other tasks done to it. Hopefully, I haven't crossed that fine line between great brakes and to much brakes !!! Gary
  14. 2001 RSV with 90,000 miles, cruise will work some times, other times it wont, have been having this problem for about 7 months now. Some times it will set and work great, other times you have to turn it off and on several times before it will work, and then when you cancel or touch brake it wont reset and you have to turn switch off and on several times to get it to set. Getting to be a pain. Any ideas?
  15. So I would like to get some passing lamps and I like the tri-bar halogen ones. I inquired about one set with part number STR-4WM35-10-EA and was told they were the lamps only with out the Buckets? Another set with this part number I inquired about says there is no harness, just a wire coming out of the back. That Part number on Yamahas website says Tri Bar Passing Lamps, need to use with mount sold separately. So For a Tri bar set up what part number (s) do I need? does the connecting harness for the passing lamps come with lamp or the mount kit? Do I just need the 1D6 mount and the lamp set part number above? Was trying to do it cheap through different sources, but maybe going through one of the online dealers is the way to go even if its more money. Thanks. RSTDdog
  16. I'm looking for ideas for mounting speakers on the trunk top or sides or ????? I don't really want to reduce storage space. Could you all post pics of the set up you have....along with any pro or cons of that set up.
  17. I put a set of bars that came off my 2007 Tour Deluxe in the classifieds. Thought I would mention it here so if anyone is looking for an excellent set used for their Venture. Fuzzy
  18. So, last fall I changed the carb. diaphragms out in the 86. Found one with a slight crimp on the edge but no holes or problems. It was more of a preventative measure. Did a carb synch and set the idle circuits using the idle rpm drop method. Bike felt smooth and good power. However, my fuel mileage dropped from 40 commuting to 37. i run about 60-70 miles a day from work to home. The measured mpg is cold start with choke and all speeds. I could smell the exhaust as being a bit rich. Tried adjusting the idle screws to no avail. Fast forward to maintenence day. I have a set of needle shim washers and a color tune with me. MikeZ and I changed out the washers and set the synch again. It looked pretty good. I could also tell that there was a difference by the choke lever settings. The colortune needs modification to work on the venture. So, did not touch the idle settings. On the way back to San Antonio I got 37 heading into a wind. I used almost a gallon less fuel than Mike did on his 1989. Now, it had more luggage on board and did have a bit of an afterfire. Next week it was back to commuting to work. Checked several tanks of fuel and found I am up to 41mpg! And the rich smell at idle is gone. So my suspicion is that the replacement diaphragm are not only a bit stiffer than the originals, but possibly a bit thicker. Plug color is good. Next stop is figuring out a good way to use the colortune on the V-4. JB
  19. As some of you already know I bought my bike as a basket case. On my first weekend on it I lost a pin in the shift segment and came 15 miles home in 1st gear. I got it back together after waiting for the parts and went out on Easter Sunday for an 80 mile ride. It ran great. I'm going to put new brake pads in it and do the starter upgrade this weekend and have a few more things to work on. 1st. My choke will not stay engaged on its own. I can give it full choke and it fires right up, but when released the choke rotates off on its own. Is there an adjustment i'm missing or is something just worn out? 2nd. Idle...after my trip home in first gear when I lost my pin in the shift segment it helped my carbs a lot, but now it's idling at about 1100 rpm, what should it be set at? 3rd. Rear air, My bike is a standard and i'm wondering what pressure I should be running it at. I'm 350#s and will be the only person on the bike. Also should this be set with me on the bike or freestanding? 4th and last...for now. Lighting, I am a truck driver and work overnights, I live 30 miles north of Minneapolis. My trip home in the morning is opposite of traffic but a lot of people cross the northbound side to get to the southbound lanes. I'm thinking of some simple driving lights for better visibility but would like to see how those of you who are running them have them mounted. Pics would be helpfull. Thanks to everyone on this site, putting this bike together and getting it into good riding shape has been a breeze with all your help.
  20. Discouraging find this weekend. My 24 x 48 garage has a serious problem, at least 1 6x6 post is rotting out. These posts are rough cut true 6in x 6in popular, set about 4' deep in concrete. Then walls were built, then pad poured inside. Not easy to inspect other posts and will work just 1 at a time. Does not appear to be any wood left in concrete pour under 6x6-seems to be just rot and dirt. Looking for suggestions of how to repair. My first thought is to start carving with the chain saw a 4 x 4 recess into the 6x6, auger as deep as possible in the concret pour, then jamb a treated 4 x 4 into the augered concrete pour and recessed 6 x 6. Bolt the 4x4 to the 6x6 and repour concrete to set 4x4 and pack concret up to support bottom of remaining 6x6. Any other ideas?
  21. I am going to need to cut open my best collector after the spare I had on my bike had the output pipe on the right muffler break off. I took my other collector off last fall because it was rattling bad. My question is, if I take the center wall out that seperates the two sides, will it make the bike louder? I have had a set of Jardines on the bike for about ten years and really don't want the bike to be any louder. In the tech write up, it does state that it opens up the bike a little, like putting a crossover pipe behind a set of headers on a car. Suggestions appreciated. RandyA
  22. Well first time at bike week and I gotta say NOTHING SPECIAL. I rode over there on thursday got there 8 AM and the place was like a ghost town. I was the on the bike parked across from Froggies right down town on main street. I took off riding around for a while and nothing was going on any where. . I drove up A1A past Ormond beach and then back to down town and was able to park right across from Froggies again . Things were getting crowded but really nothing to do there but watch a bunch of hot dogs gun their bikes as they go by and they allow cars to go through there to causing a LOT of back up traffic . I went across the intercoastal and not much set up there either they were just starting to set up band stage and if you want to stop and look around at vendors it's $7 to park All the bike dealers are set up at the Race track about 5 miles out of town Yamaha , Honda etc.....Then if you want to go back down town it's crowded and ya gotta pay to park again. I've ridden over to dayton a dozen times before and i gotta tell you the economic times have hit there quite s few boarded up busines, gas stations and small motels restaurants etc. I'm sure it gets hoppin' at night but really seemed slow for for a place that usually gets a few hundred thousand people. I drove back about 2PM and maybe saw 30 bikes on the 150 mile trip riding towards Daytona. Hell in years past on my way to Orlando I'd see that many Harleys broke down on the side of the rode during bike week:rotf:. Guess I'm getting to old but it just seemed kind of BLAH!!
  23. I have set the 2nd gen gearset into the old 86 1st gen block that I have and so far I do not see anything that looks like it would not work. With some larger diameter gears due to the 5th gear overdrive, I was concerned about clearance problems, but so far, so good. I have set the gears in both halves and will post some pictures. RandyA
  24. I have a set of Frogg toggs that thatworks great that I paid $69 for them.Yesterday while at sams club I found a set of Rain Gear that is identical to the Frogg Togg.I took them home and compared the tags that they came with and they are identical information on them as the frogg toggs and they were only $26.95.Supposed to rain today so i will give them a test.Great deal I think. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/product.jsp?productId=prod1113446
  25. Howdy all: I'm a whiz at putting 2 and 2 together and getting 22. So please confirm for me what seems obvious and I'm likely getting hysterically wrong. Want to replace the stock exhaust on an '08 RSTD...and after much research had just about concluded to do this with a set of RK muffs. Acquired the necessary brackets and VTwin clamp, and have a set of '03 vintage RK pipes on the way. Still a little confused about half-specific comments about punching out a plug on one of the two pipes (which one? what plug? does 'punch out' mean knock out completely or just radicaly perforate? etc). But that's not actually my main question. Have to admit that the pipes I REALLY would like to mount are a pricey bit of kit...the Vance and Hines Monster Ovals that are made for the HD Touring bikes, including the Road King. Given that these have a street price north of $550 a set, I'm reconciled to waiting a bit to fluff the bank account a bit before pursuing. Help me out here: If the stock RK pipes will fit on the RSTD... And the V&H pipes are a slip-on fitment for the RK... Does this mean that I will be able to mount these muffs on the RSTD, using the same brackets/clamps as for the OEM Harley muffs? Any special considerations (as apparently arise for mounting Screeming Chicken cans)? By the way, yes I've considered just mounting aftermarket slip-ons already configured for the Venture/RSTD, but have to say that I'm just not that jazzed about any of the makes available (Bubs, KW, 4-2-4s, etc)....But the MO's have tickled the lust button. Muchas Gracias, amigos
