VR Assistance

  1. Well, I finally got all the bugs out of the starter clutch problem that I was having. Thanks for everyone's input on the problem to help me diagnose it and make the repairs, especially GeorgeS (he was a really big help and couldn't have done it without his telephone assistance). Now I have another wierd problem that reared it's ugly head for only the second time since I have owned this Venture (19 months so far). I needed to give my throtle hand a rest when riding today and decided to set the cruise. I hit the power button on the cruise module, all the lights indicated proper functioning and the pressed the "set" control on the handlebar. The bike immediately lost all electrical function and died. After coasting to the side of the road, I turned the ignition off and then back to the run position. The bike started right up. I made it home, but was afraid to try the cruise again for fear of the same results. In case you are wondering if this may be somehow tied to my starter clutch repairs... I don't think so. The cruise did this exact same thing once before back last fall. After that incident it has worked flawlessly untill today. Any ideas?
  2. This week I replaced the original Dunlop D404's that came on the 06 RSV. I got 10,500 miles from the originals with no problems...and they still had some useful tread at both ends. The front tire had worn as evenly as any front tire I've ever had on a bike. The rear was mostly worn in the center, but that reflects the unfortunate manner of most of my rides; much more straight up than heeled over. Having read all the tire posts I could find on this great site, I was really leaning toward some of the Avons or Michelins that many here have raved about, but the 404's have performed well for me and the difference in price was enough to send me back to them. This morning I took the bike out for a ride to scuff in the new rubber and was just amazed at how well the bike was handling and how light the low speed steering was. I thought to myself, "This is exactly what the guys have been saying about their new (insert brand) tires when they make the change." Had I made the change to one of the other brands, and they felt just like these new 404's, I would have been thrilled with how good they felt. Since I didn't make a change, I'm merely comparing a new set of tires to a set nearing the end of their road. New tires feel great and I will not spend much time in the future wondering how many more miles I might squeeze out of an existing set.
  3. ok i am new in here and have a question where can i get a head set for a 1990 venture royal 1300 if anyone knows where to find one let me know
  4. As I noted in an earlier post, I have had a rattle in the engine when it is tilted over on the side stand. I have come to the conclusion that is gear related because if I tilt the bike over and then put it in gear, the rattle stops. Therefore I did a tear down on my 86 1300 engine and I think I will use the entire gearset out of it. I would just rebuild the engine, but there are some pretty deep pitting in the cylinder bores on a couple of cylinders, so I guess I will stay with my 1200 engine. A concern I have switching out the gearsets is there are shims on the side of the bearing that is at the 90 degree set of gears that go out the rear of the engine. Actually there are shims near where the u joint is and also shims on the inside of the bearing where the little gear cover is. I know that these shims are what set the engagement at that 90 degree angle. I have not compared the shims from my 1200 engine because I have not got it out yet. I guess I could put it together and see how much free play that I have. I am wondering if this has anything to do with the thrust washer being worn out again, but I have yet to have any skipping during acceleration or pulling hard in 2nd gear since I did the gear undercut about 60,000 miles ago. I have had it skip a couple of times during high rpm 2nd gear deceleration. This was also with pulling a 450 pound camper up and down mountains. For those of you that are not aware, I did not replace the thrust washer with the newer, harder and thicker replacement because I did not know the new one had been upgraded. This was about eight years ago or more. I just flipped it over. It has so far given me 50% more miles than the original set up did. So, is there anyone out there that has done an entire gear change out and had gear mesh concerns? Good or bad, I would like to hear from you. I need to get this all done soon because I want to do it before I go to Vogal and that is coming up fast. Muffinman, I think you are right in your earlier comments. Is there anything in particular that I need to look for? RandyA
  5. I made a contact with a local HD dealer and am going to make a deal on the Road King/Road Glide pipes. How many people here would like a set? I can get as many as needed and will give them for what it cost +shipping. I can have his set for buying him breakfast the rest we will deal but not more than $40.00 US. He has 2 pallets full and said he would be happy to get rid of them. We are giong to Mexico camping this weekend so will check when we get back. Rod
  6. I have to replace the forks on my 85 and I found a set tonight for the full set with triple tree but they are from a 1986. Will the 86's work on the 85?
  7. ...a whole different setup that hooks into the helmets headsets on a 1st Gen? Something like J & M's bar mounted CB, XM Radio & GPS and connect an iPod that pipes through the helmets headsets and still utilizes the external speakers? And, are able to talk on their Cell Phone? What have you done? What do you recommend? How has it worked out? Do you have any pics? Wife was considering getting me XM, I want a CB and I want a set of headsets for a pair of Full Face helmets. GPS is optional at this point in time as I can't really get away and use i until the kids get a little older.
  8. Any one out there know if a set of Driver Floorboards from a '84 will fit a '89? I have been looking for a complete set and saw some on Ebay for an '84 but I don't know if they will fit on my '89. Any ideas......
  9. they got bout an hour to go http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-Yamaha-XVZ12LS-XVZ12-XVZ12KC2-Venture-Floor-Boards_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ35588QQihZ011QQitemZ320123890016QQrdZ1
  10. I've been having problems with the original head sets ('01) shorting out and not working most of the time, so I replaced them with a couple of "Chatter Box" head sets. Well, here's the problem... the rear set can send but not receive (she can't hear a dang thing I say, but I can hear everything she says!). Consequently, the problem must be in the wiring for the back set. Can a person with little or no (me) mechanical abiltiy replace the back part of the intercom system?
  11. For those of you who may not yet be on Good Enough's mail list. They have now set up a Bargain Basement. Some decent prices if folks are looking for a new jacket, gloves, etc.........
  12. Is it just my bike? or do you have the same problem? Myself. (not that far away) Like to turn my turn signals on before I turn left or right. Just like I do in my truck. The problem I have always have had is the turn signal always turns OFF (times-out) before I get to the turn and I have to set it again, Is there a way to make it stay on longer? Thanks for any info. (2000 RSV) Jeff

  15. I am just tickled pink today! as I am ALL DONE with my carb dilemma, I can not believe how much smoother she runs now! ALL Factory Settings were so far off I am not sure how the bike ever ran. FLOAT HEIGHTS were .125/.135/.120/.125 (highest setting possible) now ALL set @ .260 (book says .360 could not get them that low) PILOT MIX SCREW TURNS 1-1/4 > 1-3/4 > 2-1/2 > 2-3/4 now ALL set @ 3 turns out New Set of float bowl gaskets (4) $4.50 ea. New Set of Pilot Needle Valves (4) $10.21 ea. New Set of Float Needle Valves (4) $21.95 ea. Total Cost of new parts = $146.64 The O-Rings on the Pilot Screws were shot and the the ends of them read .30 the new ones read .34 This all started (end of last summer) when I could not turn my bike over when I tried to start it, What happened was the 1 and 2 carbs were flooding so much and filling up the cylinders with fuel the bike had a very hard time turning over. So I bought a new Odyssey Battery wanted one anyways! *lol* . I also ran 8 cans of sea foam though the tank even did the soak. (last summer) nothing helped Then I started to notice fuel spitting out of the left muffler after it did finely start. Then after the winter (a month ago) fuel starts pouring out of the overflow vent. I am so terrified of taking carburetors apart and never thought I could do this job especially looking at them all tucked under there on the RSV. So I did tackled the job (very easy) and messing with the carbs are not real bad (thanks to members on this forum) Just be careful with the springs and o-rings and washers flying out and when cleaning make sure there ALL out. (don't wanna talk about that part) I also could not believe how much better the carbs reacted to adjusting to the Carbtune. This is like a whole new world! The bike starts so easy now and runs so perfect I have never felt it run so smooth! And one other thing is that (MY WHINE) has even improved. Real nice power response now! Did I say I was Happy? this bike is a 2000 RSV with 7,948 miles on it. bought the bike 2 years ago with 4,200 on it and it never ran like it does today. AGAIN , THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP! Jeff

  20. Will the head set from a gold wing fit a 2006 Venture? I noticed a website someone referred to and it was all gold wing! I am a new venture owner Thanks Biker John
  21. OK I've got calipers and parts all over the place now! Have one set restored with existing parts and another with rebuilds. I've got two questions: 1) The seal rebuild kit came with a packet of pink goo. Is that lubricant or seal setter or what? 2) The set I've put back on is a rear & front linked combo on one of the '83s. I've bled the b'jeepers out of them (2 full bottles) - everything coming out is clean fluid on both sides, but they're still mushy as all get out! There's got to be some air stuck in there. How do I get it out??? I'm using a mighty vac and the bleeding is working OK. I saw another thread on the subject but I didn't see a clear solution. Any thoughts?? Thanks
  22. About a year ago I picked up 3 pairs of brake pads for future use off Ebay. Hey..the price was right. Anyway, lately I'd been getting a little chattering noise out of the right front caliper, and since I had the the front tire off and down to the store for warantee work, I thought I'd go ahead and toss in another set of pads. Well..... I took out a set of pads and they wouldn't fit. Close, but no cigar.... The width was a few thousands over tolerance, and the thru holes were a few thousands undersized. I did a little shade tree adjusting on them and finally got them to slide in, but they still didn't feel right. I held one up to the the EBC pads I had just removed, and the radius at the bottom was right on on one end and off on the other. 'Bout then I went on down to my local shop and picked up another set of EBC's. They slipped right in. They might have cost more, but I have a lot more confidence in their working. I actually still had a record of the Ebay sale and fired off a email to the seller...he's still actively selling... warning him about possible liability issue. We'll see how he handles it. Just thought other members would like to know about my experience with non-major brand pads on Ebay.
