  1. Does anyone know if the throttle cables from the TD will work on a Venture? I am looking at upgrading to Stainless to match the brake and clutch lines and found an inexpensive set for the TD (comparatively speaking) and was wondering with the part numbers being different and all if the cable length and connections between the two is the same. Thanks Paul
  2. So when I load up a heavy passenger I can't go into any kind of lean angle without draggin parts on the ground.. Also bottom out on bad bumps.. I set the class to High and still have the problem. So I'm thinking the old springs are getting weak. I have a set of progressives for the front that i'm putting in over the winter. Does anyone know if rear progressive springs are still available and where to get them?
  3. 1996 Royal Star : Been playing around with pilot screw tuning options. I have a digital induction rpm meter...rpm bounce around but never over 1200 or under 900 rpm when idol set at 1000, or as close as I can figure by ear. I set it but still not happy. Then I got an IR temp gun and with the heat around the motor I never seemed to be getting an accurate temp as it flucated no matter what I measured on..and I ,measured almost everything on bike. So yesterday I took all the pilot screws out and cleaned them up and cut a little deeper grove for the srewdriver. I put them back in, set and left it at that for the evening. I have a brand new Morgan Carbtune for syncing...could I set my idol fuel air mixture with it? Shouldnt the vacuum change as the rpm rise and fall...just a thought.
  4. I'm trying to set up a budget for a project in Quickbooks. I have multiple expense accounts set up and i know you can set up budgets thru the "company" and "budgets" tabs.....but I can't see where I actually input the budgeted amounts for each expense account. this is a new project so I can't use "previous year" or other historical data. Anybody?
  5. Alright guys I changed the coolant Thursday evening ran it with the drain vale set to on for awhile topped off the coolant and set drain valve back to off. I rode it about 40 miles and the temperature gauge remained about 1/3 of the way from lowest mark on gauge with the temperatures in the mid 40's. I went to ride it today and within 5-6 miles gauge was up in the red. Temperature only in the low 40's here, so I pulled over and set the valve back to on to get it back to the shop. Thermostat stuck or what else could cause this? I don't believe there is any air in the system as it ran fine the day before
  6. Need to get new tires for the cage (08 Taurus) Went to Sams Club, where I can get BF Goodrich Touring T/A tires for a little over $100 each, ....more like $140 each installed and out the door. Michelin Defender XT tires would be a little over $155 each, plus the add on charges, which I didn't get a quote on, but should take the price to around $190 each installed and out the door. Are Michelin's worth the extra two bills for the set? This car (great car) has 120 k miles on it, so this will probably be the last set of tires I'll put on it. I anticipate this Taurus will easily run 200K, but at that point I'll probably want to get something a bit fresher. So, the question is: are Michelins really that special?
  7. Ok what would cause the Odometer to work perfect but the speedo stay at 0? Is there a fix or do I need to find a used speedo and try to get the odo set to the right numbers?
  8. Just kinda looking around for a set of carbs to fit my 87. If anyone has an extra set from a parted out bike and does not want half the farm for them let me know. Mike:fingers-crossed-emo
  9. I just picked up a cheap set of heated grips, bike master. They leave a lot to be desired. They are at least an inch shorter than the stock grips. The clutch side is very tight but I could probably get it on. The throttle side is really loose, it measures 1 1/16" id. I don't like the idea of having only glue holding it in. The temperature changes might break it up and leave me sol somewhere. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good set? Thanks
  10. Yesterday around 1:00pm I felt a slight pain in my right elbow, by 4:00pm it hurt like hell just to move it, by 7:00pm it was swelled up three times it's normal size and could hardly move it. 10:00pm it was swelled up, won't bend and turning purple. Called a friend of my Daughters Mother to see if my Daughter could spend the night so I could go to ER. Got to Er and set and set and set until they finally got me in and took x-rays. I have an infection in the fluid sack of my right elbow, pumped me full of antibiotics (after blowing out a vein in my left arm) and gave me a script for more antibiodics and sent me home at 5:00am. Called my family doctor and he said they should of drawn some of the fluid out to see what kind of infection I have, so he's waiting for the hospital report to see if anything else needs to be done. Now I hurt like hell, can't sleep, can not hardly use my right arm and drinking wine with my left hand with the hope the wine will let me sleep. If this is a sign of old age, I vote NO.
  11. Thinking hard about buying Dmnordin's rebuilt carb set, which is from an 86 1300. Anyone know if it is the same setup as on the 85 1200 I have? I think it is, but hate to drop the $$$ and have a nice set of carbs I can't use. Thx to any and all that answer. I do appreciate you guys/gals. Kevin
  12. '88 VR......Is there a good way to install a retaining strap on the saddlebag top cover to hang it, rather than lift it off and set it down? Ideas are welcome...... -Pete, in Tacoma WA USA '83,88 Venture
  13. has anyone out there tried the superflow mufflers from B&E. I found them on ebay and also went to the web site. they seem like a descent set up if you like the rk muffler look and sound. any thoughts would be helpful with my desicion.

    Avon Tire question

This is not a question of whether an Avon is a good tire or how good their customer service is or warranty or how long they last or how they handle. I like the way Avon's handle on my 91 VR. I am on my 6th or 7th SET of Avon Venom's in the last 5 years. And frankly it could be the 8th. I have lost track. I have yet to get more than 5000 miles out of either a front or rear tire before the sidewalls have cracked extensively and usually I get more in the range of 1000 to 3000 miles. All of the tires were mfg'd within 6 to 9 months of mounting. Understand that I maintain the tire pressure per the techs at Avon, bike has been garaged, I do not wash the tires with anything but rain water, I haven't washed my rims in 10 or so years. I use no chemicals or products on the rims or tires. I put the tires on and ride. The bike did sit for a few months after I had a hip and knee replaced but otherwise I try to get out and ride (ie: exercise the tires ...) when ever I can. I have found the Avon reps (and I have been through 2 different companies that rep for Avon here in the states) agreeable and out of all the Avon's I have had, I have only paid for one (1) set and mounting twice. Good for Avon. Whoopie. The bike has a touch over 200,000 miles on it. No problems that would affect it's ride or tire wear or condition. Period. Once again after a short time on this set I am experiencing rather extreme sidewall cracking. So here is my question: Has any one actually heard of or experienced a sidewall blowing out as a result of this type of cracking (not related to age rot) or is this just cosmetic? I am getting tired of putting tires on this thing every 3000 miles.
  15. I've been doing some searching, but no luck yet, for a set of master cylinder covers. The only left-side I can find is in a set of Kuryakyn's for a VTX-1800. I have a set of aftermarket lids on both, but am looking for covers to hide the peeling/dull clearcoat on the reservoirs. I know I may have to do some "tweaking" because of the audio control mount. Here is what I've found so far.
  16. I had to replace a burned out bulb for my passing lamps and was reminded what a junky set up they are. Has anyone replaced the passing light buckets with something better? Perhaps something that can be adjusted without removing the bulbs? I'm good for another year or so until these bulbs burn out but I wouldn't mind finding a better set up to mount on my light bar.
  17. Hi All, New Member here and learning a lot. I have 2002 Midnight Venture with less than 8000 miles. She still has the original tires. Below is a picture. Lately she has been been doing nothing much beyond sitting in the garage collecting cobwebs. At one point several months ago I brought a new battery and went to start it up. It did not start and there was fuel leaking from the carb overflows. I am in SW Florida and and we have 10% ethanol in our gas and I'm figuring that did me in. Thanks to the great article from Freebird: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7830 I got the carbs off and cleaned up. Now the bike runs great and idles great. I had them on and off about 8 times before I finally got it right. On the last attempt I looked through one of the pilot jets and realized the tiny pinhole was a bit smaller than the rest. No amount of blowing would clear it. I have a carb cleaning tool that has wires in various diameters. I poked the smallest one through a good pilot jet and felt no resistance. I then poked it through the one with the smaller pinhole and felt resistance. I pushed it through and then blew it out again. I could *see* some crud fly out of it. After that it finally idled OK. Only issue is that I somehow ended up with a left over screw that I *think* is from the bike. Probably from the area around the middle of the bike because I also replaced the fuel filter and checked out the fuel pump which turned out to be OK. There is a picture of the screw. It is a philips head and about 3/4 inch long with a washer. If anybody recognizes it and knows where it goes, I would appreciate it if you could let me know. Since I got so much from this forum already, I would like to contribute something. One of the warnings in dealing with these carbs is to not lose the tiny O-Ring in the edge of the bodies that gets exposed when you remove the diaphragms. Of course I lost one - perhaps it was never there. At any rate, I had a set of O-rings I picked up a while ago from Harbor Freight to fix a leaky hand held sprayer. The smallest in this set worked pretty well in the carb and I like I said, the bike is running real sweet now. There are some pics showing the O-ring set and the label. Your biggest problem will be what to do with the other 381 o-rings in the set. I also found that using plastic cups to protect the intake while the carbs were off worked pretty well. Thanks again Freebird for the great article. I probably would not even have tried this without it as a guide. After about the 4th time taking them on and off, I was able to do it in about 10 minutes. First time is always hardest!
  18. well as some of you know, susan's mom has been fighting her bout with cancer for about 4 yrs, last 3 not having much of a life, gave up on friday morning. we knew it was coming but still a hard hit on her family. visitation is sun evening from 6-8pm and graveside service monday at 2pm. they've had all the services set up 4 yrs ago but just had to set the times, a great relief at this time for the family. looks like all the family will be here for the services. we thank all for their support thru these times.
  19. I think I will me replacing my front wheel bearing. (I feel a buzzing in the handlebars & a whirring sound when I lean into turns even thought the bearings are not sloppy) So I have to buy a puller. I know the Tusk bearing remover set would work 8mmm- 31mm but it's $90 and a tool I don't use often SO.... My question is will this Harbor Freight set work as well. It's Standard sizes not metric & since IDK the size of the front bearing I figure I will ask here. http://www.harborfreight.com/blind-hole-bearing-puller-95987.html
  20. "Ever walk into a room with some purpose in mind, only to completely forget what that purpose was? Turns out, doors themselves are to blame for these strange memory lapses. Psychologists at the University of Notre Dame have discovered that passing through a doorway triggers what's known as an event boundary in the mind, separating one set of thoughts and memories from the next. Your brain files away the thoughts you had in the previous room and prepares a blank slate for the new locale." It's not aging, it's the door!
  21. How much fuel is left in the tank when the last bar on the gauge goes away?? The knob for the reserve valve on mine was broken off when I bought her so I don't know if it's set to reserve or not.
  22. I pulled apart an 85 1200 donor motor this weekend and found a different looking set of clutch friction plates in it. Anyone seen these before? The friction pads are smaller than a stock set. I don't really think these will be good in a modified motor. Gary http://i1007.photobucket.com/albums/af193/gdingy101/IMG_3129.jpg
  23. Anyone have a set of "Gray" passenger arm rest for 91 VR?
  24. My wife would like to install a set of risers on her 2006 vstar1100 custom. Barrons has a set that gives 2" pull back without a rise that might work. It looks like all the control lines will still be usable. Anybody have any other suggestions. I put a set of Motorcycle Larry riser/triple clamps on my fjr and they worked great but can't seem to see anything for the 1100 there. If you have a riser in mind but it might need longer cables please let me know about them as well just warn me I will need longer cables. I think 2 inchs back and an inch or so up would be about right. Al
  25. OK does anyone know of a good place to buy tires in Canada:snow2:. I am getting tired of getting ripped off for the price we have to pay up here in the great white north . I am planning on getting a set of Avons for my 07:thumbsup2: I will gladly order from the USA but most places can not be bothered to ship to Canada:confused07:
