  1. I received my 86 Venture for a christmas present from my family. I have been able to get rid of that rust in the gas tank, rebuild the carbs, now I am on my exhaust. The collector needed to have the baffles taken out. I was successful but the pipes are all rusted. The welder doesn't think he can fix them. I would like to buy a collector that is not all rusted out. Thanks Tom
  2. Some of you might appreciate this. Machinist's Workshop magazine tested penetrants for break out torque on rusted nuts. This was specifically addressed to rusted, other material results may vary The results are below, as forwarded by an ex-student and professional machinist, Bud Baker. They arranged a subjective test of all the popular penetrants with the control being the torque required to remove the nut from a "scientifically rusted" environment. Penetrating oil ..... Average load None ...................... 516 pounds WD-40 ................... 238 pounds PB Blaster ............... 214 pounds Liquid Wrench ......... 127 pounds Kano Kroil .............. 106 pounds ATF-Acetone mix.......53 pounds The ATF-Acetone mix was a "home brew" mix of 50 - 50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note the "home brew" was better than any commercial product in this one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch and we all now use it with equally good results. Note also that "Liquid Wrench" is about as good as "Kroil" for about 20% of the price. Somtimes grandpa's solution still holds water...
  3. (trunk..typo) Went out to wire up the trailer pigtail and do some antena work this morning, and when I removed the trunk to get at the CB I found that the left front bracket was busted off completely. The break was rusted up pretty good so it probably happened before I bought it. Anyway... Anyone have a rack left over from a trike conversion or from a trunk mod?? I can get by for the time being with just the 3 attachment points, but it would be nice to replace the whole rack. BTW its ugly rusted too, or I'd take it down to the muffler shop and have it rewelded....
  4. Never again will i remove an exhaust collector from a MKII. finally after TWO years of dealing with "life", i got back to my 86vr. lost my "religion", 14 times, before i got the blamed thing off! NOW! if you haven't had your MKII collector off, you might need to do a double check. mine has rusted out/through, about 3/4 of the circumference on ALL 4 exit pipes.only option is to take it to work and fabricate all new connections. one good thing!!!!!! my baffles are all still good! lol just jt
  5. I noticed when I was shopping for my RSV that several I saw on the internet had rusted antenna bases, so this must be fairly common. Here is a pic of one of mine and both are pretty rusty. I like the look of the standard antennas so I really don't want to switch to the Firefly's. Has anybody here had any luck replacing or fixing these things? http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b303/elmicko2002/utf-8BSU1HMDAyMTYtMjAxMTAyMTYtMTMxOC5qcGc.jpg
  6. Dan is working on another product for our Ventures. No info is going to be given out right now but.....if someone has an old saddle bag rail, be it rusted, or scratched, or damaged we could use it as a mock up piece. We need the ones that wrap around the outside of the bag. More shiny stuff to follow.....
  7. Does anyone else find that the saddlebag rails for the RSV/RSTD rust easily, especially around the welds and the rounded curvers? I now have my second set on the bike. Both sets rusted to the point where they look terrible. Any fixes/preventions I'm not aware of? Anyone else have this problem? If I can't get it resolved, I'm just going to take them off, and leave them off. Thanks, Don from PA.
  8. My '85 muffler tips rusted out and since the rest was solid, I scored a major hit! Not knowing what I would find, I sawed off the rusted out tips up to a 3/8" from the seam at the widest point of the bell. To my surprise, I found a very thick, recessed end baffle (that has a nice look) with the exhaust tube comming through all the way to the end of the original tip. I cut the tube off even with the new opening and recessed it about 1/2" back into the mouth and painted the whole interior of the opening with a high temp black paint. You wouldn't believe how sharp it looks! Clean and racey. So, before you trash your mufflers, chop'em! What could you lose?
  9. Anybody else getting wet inside their front turn signal/running lamp housings? If so, any good fix? Yesterday a friend pointed out that I had a burnt out bulb. Opened it up to change it and it is all corroded. Screws were rusted, inner receptacle was rusted. Never noticed it upon inspection in the past, but it was rusted enough to have been happening for a while. The rubber gasket appeared in tact. Think this is covered under the 5 year? Thanks in advance, TTW
  10. I started my maint inspection today on the 99. How did I miss this. We removed the voyager kit Friday evening. I noticed today the jam nut, bearing receiver, and bolt assembly that screws into the left side of the axle support mount is broke off and gone. The suspension fork on the voyager side is rusted and the bolt break area axle mount is rusted so it has been missing for a while. Where the #@^! did I loose that at Florida? It was there when I installed the new tire last August. This project is on hold for a while. See the pictures.
