  1. Just returned home from riding the last 3 days of the Southern Route of "Run For The Wall 2012".. A real experience to say the least.. I would recommend riding what "legs" you can next year. It will be the 25th Run and should be something very special. A buddy of mine on a GW and I on my "Limited" joined the Southern Route Group in Chattanooga and rode with them all the way into D.C... We rode home on Sat/Sun and didn't stay for the "Thunder Run".... Very well organized and satisfying.... It was mostly HD, quite a few GW and some Yammy's....Trikes, sidecars and trailers also... Each group was in their own platoon.. Rain on the first day, but beautiful the rest of the way....
  2. Going up to Eureka Springs Thursday -Sunday (24th -27th) on a bike I just rebuilt. (it is multi-colored) I will be crossing at Greenville Ms.. What i am wondering is if there is anyone along the way that would be willing to help should i run into problems....the bike is fine right now but it hasn't been run in 4-5 years.. Anyway, that is my question. The trip is is my Churches Youth Group retreat. I will be busy with them and wont have time for "Meet-n-Greets" Sorry. but I do come into Arkansas occasionally so maybe next time.
  3. The PO wired up air horns but they are wired to a different button on the handle bars that is not easily reached. Sort of defeats the purpose if I have to go hunting for the button every time. So, I want to use the original horn button. The compressor is mounted just under the passenger back rest, with the horns under the saddlebags. I have print outs and directions on wiring the relay into the horn switch. My questions are..... The instructions say "20 amp fused from batt to post 87". Is this an extra inline fuse direct to batt post or do I just come off the fuse block using that fuse? Can I hook into the pink and brown wires right down beside the OEM horn and run the 2 wires to the back or does it have to be hooked in up near the button for any reason? Can I remove both OEM horns or is there any reason I would have to leave leave one on. If I decide to add a steibel horn as well, (which I am thinking of doing) do I need to run a 2nd relay or can I just tap into the same circuit as the existing air horns. When I add running lights, do I use the same fuse as in question #1 , run another inline fuse or what?
  4. I stoped and tryed to get some gas at a local station and it was pumping slow I got about 3/4 of a tank and went in to pay and said must be something wrong with your pump and she says oh I will tell the owner when he gets here. I get about 12 miles on the tank of fule and I am wondering if I will even get home. So to work I go on the cycle clean conections all that I can find move the TCI as long as I am at it. Still doent run very well take it for a ride it starts to run better but not like it did. Telling a friend of mine and he says sound like fule filter I just put a new one in a couple of days before I got the gas. So yesterday after checking plugs wires and everything else I could think of I decided to check the fule filter and here it is full of crud brown nasty stuff. And guess where it came from, found out that they let their tanks run empty and thats why it was puming so slow. So another new filter and its runing better but not the same as it was so I am sure that the screen on the petcock is coverd with this stuff and I hope that the tank wont have to be flushed out. Still waiting to talk with the owner I guess that he has been avoiding some other upset people.
  5. Has any one here used MRF for roadside assistance and what is your thoughts on them. I am looking at putting a lot of miles on my bike this year and it would be nice to know that there is somebody you can call when you are far from home in case you run into a problem.
  6. well today i went out to look over some used motorcycles to kind of get a feel for what would feel good to ride. i dont have the cash yet. but things might be good in august for a new to me bike. i stopped at a dealer and asked about some used bikes. he had a vstar 650cc nice bike low miles and a few honda shadows not sure of the size? i asked if i could take out the vstar for a ride? he checked to see if i had my endorsement and i do. he said yep you can take it for a test ride but you must have a major credit card? i was like why? he said they run it through and place a $250 amount on your card? when the bike comes back and there is no damage your card will get that $250 credited back to your card? i thought maybe it,s to cover some insurance thing? kind of like a car rental? i was not asking to rent the bike i wanted to test it. i left with out the test ride. but did get to hear it run and look at the maintenance records. what the hell how would i know if that bike had brake or transmission problems or something untill after i bought it? i never heard of this before. has any one else?
  7. My computer keeps kicking on like its running something even when not in use. Sounds like a high speed fan running it may run for 30 sec. to a min. haven't timed it. Everything else seems to be normal.
  8. I like loud. I have drilled the back of the muufler and still think its sounds like a 90 year old man snoring. If I cut out the rear plate on the muffler and pulled out the tube would I run into a problem with the carb mix and backpressure? Would it lean out too much?
  9. Anyone ever run a Vredestein?? http://www.ebay.com/itm/165-15-165-80-15-VREDESTEIN-SNOW-SNOW-TIRES-/300651135390?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr&hash=item460034419e http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?VISuperSize&item=300651135390 Looks like it would make a pretty good bike tire... it's a little rounder than most... i coulda used the studs a couple of years ago... LOL
  10. My "new to me" 05 RS Midnight Venture would not run off choke when I picked it up a month ago. After draining the old gas, new plugs and running a few tanks with seafoam through it it will now run off choke once fully warmed up. However it's still not right. Takes a long time before choke can be full off, idle is rough, can hear it missing and lacks power right off idle. Once rpm's come up a little it screams. Today I decided to pull the carbs for cleaning. Is there a write up on adjusting the floats (they all seem to be too high) and the mixture screws (they were set from 1.5 to 3.25 turns)? Also anyone have any tips on separating the carbs to make it easier to disassemble for cleaning? Thanks
  11. In Dec of 2011 I discovered a homeless Veteran's Shelter in Vinton,La. that was sorely in need of funds. The place was established and is run by one Vietnam Vet and his wife. Because they are religious-based they get NO State or Federal funding. Bert and his wife have maintained this Shelter for the past 28 years with only their own funds and meager donations. On March 17th I and my CVMA Brothers here in SW La. held our Annual Spring "All Patriots Poker Run" to benefit this Vets Shelter. We registered well over 200 Riders and at days end we handed over $7500.00(cash) to the Shelter. Boomer....who sez we don't need the Goobermint to make good things happen...and even de pygmies donated their Dairy Queen funds to this cause.....
  12. Hi All, Received my Barons Ultimate Light Bar recently. Amazing quality, very happy. Just went to fit it only to find no wiring in the harness for driving lights! Barons spell it out in the instructions that there should be a blue wire for the left and right driving lights as well as the the two left and right turn signals. Turn signal cabling is fine. Nothing to be seen for the driving lights! I have checked the loom in case it just wasnt run into the original light bar and nothing! I can only assume its something to do with Australian compliance laws as I cannot imagine they would leave them out for any other reason. Not sure what people buying the Genuine Yamaha lightbar thought when they went to fit them also. Now i will have to run a feed directly from the battery via a relay. Its just extra hassle i didnt want. I just thought it was very bizzare. Any other Aussie riders out there who have found the same issue?
  13. sad: to say i might have to sell the 1984 royal. im still fighting a workers comp case. and i still owe$2500 on the car. to have it paid in full. i know the bike wont bring in that much? it does run but like allways it needs some TLC. i have put $$ into it. and im sure a good paint job and some tunning will bring this bike back to its glory days. when the weather gets better. i will go out and uncover it and snap some pics. i know pics can make it look nice. and seeing as ones on this site have not rode it? they still might give a good offer for it? EUSA1 mike did a small run on it when he was kind enough to help me get it to my place and out of storage. he might be able to give a fair opion on the bike should he be so inclined to do so? if i should settle my workers comp cliam this summer i would be in the market for another one. now i want people to understand i am not asking in any way for help again to save the bike and keep the car? you all work hard for your money. yes i would like to keep it. but i need my car. thats an all around transportaion. as the bike is not. like i said when i get time to take pictures i shall post them. thank you all sincerly james aka oldgoat.
  14. Anybody planning on going to the Moonshine (IL) lunch run this year?? http://moonshine-run.com/Moonshine/ Frank D.
  15. Here's my problem,,, I know, I got lots but this one has me stumped. My son bought a 82 Honda XL80s for my grandson. It was running and they did run it around the back yard a few times, but then it quit. So dad to the rescue. I've been working on this thing for 4 weeks now, and it just won't run, not even give me a burp. That said, I did have it running at one point, but the slowest it would go was about 3000 rpm, so I shut it down and since then, nothing. History. When I brought it to my garage I found the stator flywheel loose and the key sheared off. replaced the key, points, condenser, cleaned the flywheel, (took all magnets out and re-glued them) cleaned the carb, tried 3 different coils, but seem to get an inconsistent spark at best. Got about 90 lbs compression with 3 kicks on the starter, 120lbs with a shot of oil in the cylinder. Tried WD 40 to help it fire and then even some ether, but no fire period. I need some fresh ideas.
  16. My mustang got in a little wreck and I found a 92 trans am for 340 bucks. I bought it before even looking at the odomoter. I got going down the road and i looked down and saw it only had 113xxx miles on it. But anyways back to my question, I want to put a 350 LT1 fuel injected motor into it, can i still run the tranny that's in it now?
  17. In an earlier thread http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=60093 I expressed concern over power loss and low fuel economy at altitude. (See the trip report on page 2) So today I had my RSV run on a dyno to see if some electrical or mechanical problem might be the culprit. The first chart is 'one run' in fourth gear and 'one run' in fifth. The Second chart is 'two runs' in fourth and 'two runs' in fifth. We ran in fifth because that is where I experienced the most problems on my trip. The bike was flawless on the dyno. The rev limiter on my bike clearly cuts off at different RPM depending on which gear it is in. Fifth at about 5600 and fourth at about 6600 rpm. My guess is this is probably because of the speed rating on the stock tires. Both techs at the dealer reported I could expect about a three percent loss of power for each thousand feet in altitude. Since a lot of my riding on the trip was at 5,6, or 7,000 feet that seems consistent with my experience. Horsepower is on the ground and after gear reductions and drive train loss. So it is less than the engine horsepower in the specs.
  18. Decided to give both my seafoamed VRs a mid winter start. Both started up just fine. Going to let them run for about 15 minutes.
  19. This might be the most absurd reason to go light on a sentence. To "momentarily stop" before taking off is still hit and run, and because she was not drunk. Murder is murder, http://www.bikerspost.com/forum/topics/mom-gets-60-days-for-fatal-hit-run
  20. When I left Don's, I must have packed too much stuff in the bags, (well, OK, I know I did) and my right bag is VERY stuck shut. I can release the front latch, but not the back one. I have tried pushing, pulling and every form of violent acts to get it open short of destroying it. My thought is somehow to take the hinge apart. it seems that there are two roll pins, front and back. I tried an easy out last night, but they didn't move. I called two dealers and talked with their parts and service guys, and the computer blowup didn't show the breakdown of the hinge. And the service depts, had never run into this problem. I'm now thinking if we have a small enough aircraft drill bit here, I might try and drill out the roll pin. (I'm assuming that there is one) Anyone run into this? Steve
  21. My ride is a 92 Yamaha venture , old plastic bike a bit rough around the edges, but I like the way it rides. It was treated pretty roughly in its life I think and some of the plastic was a bit rough and it was missing all of the amenities because it was a police bike. Picked up a parts bike for $500 this weekend.. that all the electronics are present on, lots of extra amenities, like drivers backrest, trailer hitch, etc.. Wasn't supposed to run, but it is running. Would only run on choke at 1st , but after a can of sea foam it is getting better slowly but surely, no idea of the shape of the carbs / carb diaphragms. I am sure the carbs need cleaning. Sat up for a long time I think , the clutch and brakes need to be rebuilt, It has zero clutch right now. But this bike wasn't supposed to work really ,so this is all a bonus I think I am still going with my original plan though and use the parts from it to fix mine up, but man, I'm pleased as punch to find another one for a good deal.. I didn't have a radio, cb, intercom stuff or any of that. http://www.haveparrotwilltravel.com/gallery2/albums/userpics/%21033.jpg
  22. After having my carbs of for the second time I finally noticed that three of my pilot jets were completly stopped up. After much work I managed to clear them out. I got my carbs back on the motorcycle Saturday morning. After a few minutes of cranking, it finally cranked up. This time it was actually running on all four cylinders. Before it was only hitting on one. Since the bike had sat for a very long time you can imagine what my shop looked like. I couldn't even see for the smoke. I shut it down and went to town and got oil and filter and came back and changed the oil. I started it again and let it run for about 15 minutes and smooth out some as well as burn off all the oil on the engine and pipes. Hearing it crank and run was one of the sweetest things I've heard in a long time. I said all that to get to my question. It seems to be running fairly smooth and the throtle responds good but it is idleing at 3000 rpm and I can't get it to come down. The idle screw is backed all the way out. Does anyone know what the problem might be?
  23. Hi Just wanted to say a big thanks to Starstruck for adding to our recent holiday in Wyoming. It was great to spend lunch at the Irma in Cody with a fellow Venture rider and talk about where to go and what to see. It really made a difference to get some local knowledge. Those roads across the plain from Grand Teton to Laramie are awesome. Although we were in a can, we picked up some great riding roads like the switchbacks up to Dinosaur Ridge behind Golden in Colorado or the run up to Estes Park. You guys are very lucky to have a country to run in like that right on the back door. We've had five holidays in the States and each one has been FAB. The wife's even thinking about hiring a bike for the next one! Trouble is i can't read the speedo's on the new Harley's and that and BM's seem to be the only things out for hire. Thanks once again
  24. Ok, so my wife has been experimenting with baking. She has some how come by a reciepe for a cheese cake that is great ( sorry none left). Now I am not saying it is going to give Lonna a run for her money, but it sure does a fine job of easing the pain of having to loose all those yummy cheese cakes to them there Texans
  25. Well, I went to my first "Slimey Crud Run". It's a motorcycle rally that takes place just west of Madison, goes from Pine Bluff to Leland, WI. Lots of different bikes, from old to new, show ready to barely running, Brit, American, Asian, and the people to match them. I saw some 2nd gen Ventures, but only saw a couple of 1st gen ones. Unfortunately, mine wasn't there. I fixed the shifter cam issue, but since it had been "abandoned" for several months, I couldn't get it running in time to go, so I took my other bike, a 650 Maxim that I've had for 18 years. Yes, it is green. -Andrew
