  1. Was doing some PM on clutch lever and the pin that goes into the cyl to lever came out of the rubber boot. How in the heck do you get it on the rubber boot again and on to that groove in the middle?
  2. Ok, so my 88vr flunked the safety check....they said the steering bearing was toast. I felt some "clunking" when I rode it home from Chicago and it felt a bit snakey in the corners so I figured they were probably right. BUT...tonight I started tearing into it...put it up on the jack so the front end was free and clear. I tried the "bounce test" but the limits of travel are restricted by wires and hoses and so it won't bounce at all...it eases to the limit, along with some the creaking sound of rubber on rubber. I grabbed the front wheel , standing in front of the bike and tried to lift and pull forward at the same time...no movement, no "clunking". I'm thinking they flunked it because of rubber...not because of bearings! And of course the potential 4 hours labour plus parts to replace the steering bearings. ADDED: did more checking and I can feel a flat spot when steering is centered...could that be enough to fail a safety? Any thoughts?

    Carbs

When cleaning my 02 I noticed a lot of small cracks in the rubber elbow from the carbs to the engine. I don't think any go through the rubber....yet. Is this common and is it likely to give me grief anytime soon?
  4. I am about to mount one of Ponch's built center stands and I see a 6" long 3" diameter black tube with a rubber cap on it with a rubber hose running out the end mounted to the angle bracket where I need to mount the stand. First, what is this part and what does it do? Second Is there a relocation mod for this or is this part not necessary? Before I start taking stuff off I would like to know what I am doing before I mess something up. Thanks for any insight I can get... Mongo
  5. Hey guys. I have never given the pass seat a second though but The weather is getting better na dmy wife and daughter are wanting to ride with dad!. the pass seat on mine is mounted with one screw at the tail but this is not enough to keep it secure. the seat still moves to the left and right. Is there something that i am missing or is it that the rubber grommets under the seat are compressed and need to be replaced. While working on my buddys venture i noticed his seat had a whioel different bracket to mount to.
  6. I need the rubber "cap" or flap or cover that goes over the clutch bleeder access hole on my 84. Anyone got one?
  7. Still making improvements for our Jun ride. I saw several different options on here for cup holders. The option I had decided to go with was the water bottle holder from Wal-Mart. I found a couple on clearance and bought them but before I got around installing them, I found these. I got them from the bike section in my local PX (on Fort Carson Army Post). I had to bend the brackets slightly to fit around the handlebars and the rubber on the rear grab bars (though if you wanted to cut the rubber off, they would have worked). I think they look really nice and should be functional. The only thing is you have to make sure you have a cup that tapers so that it will stay in...so a regular water bottle won't work...but we plan to just find some nice cups with straws, then we will dump whatever we are drinking in the cup and we can drink from the straw with the helmet on and no tilting of the head.... I've included a picture of the product packaging incase anyone else is interested. They are a nice chrome look. Oh, and they cost a whole $5.86 each! Mike
  8. I have been to maintenance day but haven't had any work done. I need help to finish maintenance work on my 83VR that I am doing and see no way to finish it without removing carbs to get to two bad vacuum rubber caps on right rear and left front cylinder heads. Other two cylinders plugs was easy to get to and they were rotted and torn, I must assume the other two must be bad also. So question is: How do I get on a (list?) to get help on maintenance day so I can replace these rubber plugs or caps. On the 1200 motor about an inch and a half under the rubber caps you take off for synchronizing the carbs are larger rubber caps over (vacuum?) nipples from the cylinder heads. The right rear and left front are out in the open and easy to get to. The left front and right rear can barley be seen and touched with your finger. These are the two I need to replace the rubber caps. Thanks.....Karl
  9. I know a lot of us have the 1.5" riser extensions on our RSV's and I don't think anyone has found a great replacement for the 2 rubber dampers that go between the handlebars and fairing to keep the fairing from rattling and flexing. I know some carve up the originals or force them in at some odd angle. I haven't had anything in mine in 2 years and was just going to leave it as is until last week when I found something that works well. I work at a Honda auto dealer and on the new Honda Crosstour there is a cover that hangs by two cords from the liftgate to hide whatever you may have in the rear package area. At the end of each cord is a rubber ball that fits perfectly snug between the bars and the fairing. They are working great on mine so far. I just pushed them in place and they haven't moved. Honda part# is 84413-TP6-A01 and 2 of them should be less that $5.00 and 1-2 days to order in.
  10. I just installed the 1.5 inch risers...I notice the rubber piece between the handle bars and the faring don't reach that high...so there's no rubber between the bars and the faring...is it necessary? And if so, where would I find some high density rubber like that to make an extension? Thanks! Mike
  11. With all the talk of building trailers it got my giddyup goin so a question for ya'll. I plan to build a trailer similar to the aluma, the construction of it is going to be pretty straigt forward. My question is about rubber torsion axels. When I calculate where the axle will go I know the 60/40 rule applys but do I center the wheel hub or the rubber flexi part on that line or split the difference? Retarded mind want to know, lol
  12. I got my hands on one of those carb synch tools with 4 gauages.. it came for a bunch of brass rods, with a threaded end with rubber o-ring and the other of the rod is a small hole.. They call these 'adapters' but doesn't say how they were to be used? The kit comes with the 4 rubber hoses and 4 valves used for restricting the air to smooth out the needles.. But are the rods for? Curious.. Cheers
  13. Twas the night before Christmas when all through the garages Not a motorcycle was rumbling, except for Santa Claus' The leather was hung in the closet with care In hopes that nice weather, soon would be there Our bikes were all nestled snug in their covers With visions of blacktop and burning up rubber With momma in her bandana and I in my skull cap We had settled down for a long winters nap When:Venture: out on the lawn, arose such a rumble I sprang fron the bed as I started to grumble When what to my wondering eyes should appear Was a pack of motorcycles, with riders and gear, With one old driver so lively and quick I knew in amoment it must be biker St. Nick He was dressed alll in leather, from from his head to his foot His clothes were all tarnished with bugs and road soot A bundle of chrome he had flung on his back Down the chimney he came, carrying a big red sack He spoke not a word but went straight to his work As he filled all the riding boots, then turned with a jerk, And laying a finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod,up the chimney he rose He sprang to his motorcycle,to his team gave a sign As they cracked there throttles and got into line, Now Honda,Now Harley,Now Triumph, and Indian On Kawi,On Suzuki,On Yamaha Venture and Victory, But I heard him exclaim as he roared out of sight Keep the rubber side down and have a good ride Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPLY NEW YEAR TO ALL MY VENTURE RIDER MENBERS
  14. was checking over my bike and noticed a drop of coolant on top of the rubber boot of clutch bleeder ... took off the fin (it seems tight before removing) and saw a drop of coolant at the rubber washer. the bike is an 07 RSTD, i have put on 21k miles. can i silicone a small washer on the tab on the inside of fin to place additional pressure on the rubber washer or should i replace the washer - if so do you lose enough coolant to warrant refilling the radiator?
  15. Seems everyone at PIP was watching their floorboards REAL carefully since mine went missing on ride up to Laporte. So beings I couldnt steal... er...um... borrow one of theirs, does anybody have a spare running around they can part with? I just need the rubber insert for a 2nd gen passenger floorboard. If so let me know how much so I can get that fixed up. God Bless. Mike
  16. the item identified as "1. Bolt " lower right hand picture chapter 6 page 8 of the RSTD owners manual does not come out, rather it turns and turns and turns Any suggestions on how to remove this? What is the attachment? a nut? a rubber grommet?
  17. Thought I would post a quick report and a question. I have read that the grease will turn to liquid. What happens to the liquid? Should it remain in the hub or should I see some of it on the rim? Pulled it total about 900 miles to STAR Days in Chattanooga TN and back. When I got to the camp site, I noticed grease on the backside of one of the rims. We took off the wheel and the seal was still flush w/ the hub so we didn't put too much grease in it and the seal did not get pushed out due to overfilling the hub. We did take the seal out and it looks like it was not round all the way around. One part on the inside diameter was pushed out a bit so this might have been the cause. I couldn't find a replacement while I was there so we just regreased the bearings and put everything back. It was funny as it seemed like that side was ok when I got home but noticed grease on the inside of the other wheel (not much and not nearly as much as the 1st wheel). So it basically flipped situations on me. As we stopped I did touch the hubs and on they way down one side was hotter than the other (don't remember which side at this point). On the way back home both sides seemed to stay cool to the touch. Someone must have been looking out for me too as when I got home I was taking the trailer off the bike and the ball hitch nut was close to having come off all the way. Even though I crossed the chains, I am sure that had the nut come off and the trailer come off the bike, it would have headed straight for my rear tire. Overall the trailer pulled pretty well. There was only once on the way home where it started to sway, but we were in some heavy winds too. I got a tramp stamp for the bike (should show in my sig pic). The guy who did it was telling me a story about a friend of his that made a redneck sway bar. He took 4 rubber straps. Attach 2 to each side where the chains are attached to the bike. On the trailer side attach the rubber straps to the outer most holes (2 to each side) using those C hooks where one part shows threads and the other side shows a nut. This way when you turn, on one side the rubber straps will create slack. The hooks will prevent the rubber straps from coming undone from the trailer.
  18. Neighbor came over tonight to take the bearings out of the Harbour Freight trailer wheels. He has done it before. I haven't done it at all so wanted someone to walk me through it. Got a couple questions that hopefully someone will be able to answer before we repack the bearings tomorrow. 1) Do the rubber seals (looks like a rubber ring really) need to be replaced. They look to be in really good condition. I know the previous owner of the trailer barely used it. 2) With the bearings in, there is a cavity in between them. Looks like the grease fitting is just for that cavity. Does that entire cavity need to be filled w/ grease? It certainly wasn't when we pulled the bearings out. Thanks
  19. Yep...seat wobble and not front end wobble. Even though the seat is tightened up...I guess my fat A$$ still feels ever so slightly some movement and also some creaking. I am just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? Also...do you think a hard rubber washer between the seat and the mount would both TIGHTEN up the seat and also alleviate the creaking? Any other suggestions (besides losing weight). I weigh about 220lbs.

Maybe its just me but in the past few weeks I have noticed 5 riders, 3 on wings and 2 on harleys with one thing in common: all were wearing flip-flop beach sandals while riding. Are they nuts? One hard stop where you have to put your foot down will rip that piece of rubber right off your foot with your foot possibly added in to that equation. I mean, c'mon...what are you thinking?? And these were not kids..older riders who should know better. Oh yea, the HD riders also had no helmets on. Sigh.........
  21. What type of earplugs do people wear to cut down noise in when wearing headsets? I have access to foam or rubber

well i went to check the shop thats doing the brakes and what ever else he can perform in the 600.00 range dianne gave them permission to do. i was told i was doing nothing wrong with working on the brakes. but my brake system is now laying on the bench. front calipers rear calipers. front master. and rear master. front rubber hoses as well as the one i got from dingy for the rear. tires are off and all rotors have been pulled. reason why the man said hes going to start from scratch? clean up the rotors? work on the calipers. looking for steel or at least new rubber hoses? i asked if he could wait and i could get a delink kit for the brakes. he stated for insurance reasons he wouldnt want to take on that risk? he said good idea but he must follow shop rules? i asked how far on cost are we in it? he said tear down and inspection. are a freebie to dianne? he owes her a favor? then said to redo with rubber lines and clean up and check operation of pistons in the calipers then reassembly bleed and test run cost around $300. range maybe $400. with steel lines. then said another $60 and he would try a carb sync? that includes 4 new plugs. and a free compression check? then said latter this fall or winter get them progressive spring and do the front end. will charge $50 and a case of beer for that because he will do it at end of ridding season. im now painting a huge garage door. dog sitting two wonderfull beagle dogs use to be a cat around here to?? but i think buckey one of the dogs ate it??i have to watch him hes fast and loves rabbits? the female one sadeyes is her name just acts like a female. just bring me my food water my toys take me outside then after that i dont know you:big-grin-emoticon:
  23. Been looking for something to put on my grips and help with fatigue and the buzzing. Finally found some rubberized material at an upolstery shop that seems to work. The guy at the shop said it is close to what wet suits are made of. Rubber on one side and kind of a cloth on the other. With the rubber side down they stick very well and are kind of spongy feeling when you grip them. Just cut to fit the black portion of the grips and roll them on (carefull not to get to long on the throttle side). Joined the two ends together by putting about six holes on each edge and tied it together with a black leather shoe lace. So far so good (quick 10 km ride), the buzzing is gone. Cost was 3 dollars for the material and one leather shoe lace ( don,t remember what it cost, had it for some time). So may have 5 dollars invested and did not have to wait on shipping.
  24. Did somebody has take off and put back the carbs on a 96-00 Royal Star? The real question is how to put it back fitting properly on the rubber boots that goes to the cylinders? after replace the boots, It seems that even when everything is ok, there is no way to put the carbs back on place. All that I reach was my finger hammered till now with the rubber hammer. Thanks
  25. Ok folks due to several requests for a wiring system for the Stebel horns I've built up several assemblies. They will be a plug and play ststem so nothing will be needed. Included with the harness will be a rubber covered fuse holder, 30 amp relay, fully insulated & soldered teminals. Check out my ad in the 2nd gen parts & accessories classifieds. http://www.venturerider.org/classifieds/showproduct.php?product=2541 Thanks in advance, Larry
