1. Checking some old threads, it seems my stator might be an issue. Here's the situation. Squidley removed the switch from the passing lamp circuit while he was caretaking Roxie. The dealer had put in a rinky dink switch that frequently popped fuses. Going through a relay but then straight to the battery, the passing lamps are MUCH brighter. Our theory is that the switch was throttling power, so now the lamps are getting as much power as they want. The side effect is that now I have charging issues. It seems the energy output of the engine is just barely enough to power the bike. I put on 1200 miles last weekend, a quarter of it in the rain. It was 31-45F, so I had the Gerbings jacket liner out. With that background: Every time, not just this past weekend, 15 seconds after start, the Kuryakyn battery gauge will show green--as long as it is in neutral put it in gear, and it drops to yellow, even if you pull in the clutch after a while, if you lope along (60mph in 4th), it will get back to green run at high speed (72 in 4th), it drops to yellow With the Gerbings on, generally, the battery gauge will blink in neutral when the controller is heating the elements at one point last weekend, traveling 78mph in 5th, the green light came on after an hour. Not only that, but it eventually got to two green lights. I didn't even know there were two green lights! I've only seen one. The jacket liner was ON, but on low. I downshifted to 4th to take an exit, and I lost the green. I never saw the two greens again. On the ride to MO, it was cold and raining. I kept my eye on the battery gauge because if it ever got to one yellow (there are two), I would have pulled the fuse on the passing lamps (no switch any longer). But it never did, even with the Gerbings on med-high. When the rain stopped, the green light came on as I loped through small towns. The same was true on the ride back. It was 31F when I left, so I had the Gerbings on high. I could always get green when in idle, and if I wasn't running at high RPMs, I could sometimes glimpse green. It really seems as if it is on the verge of getting enough output. I am confused about the difference between being in neutral vs being in gear with the clutch pulled; what extra load is being placed on the engine simply by being out of neutral? We have the SW Texas Maintenance Day coming up. What things should I check? I replaced the battery, thinking that was it, but that was before this trip. Ideas? 2. Time to make a believer out of me. Since trading the RSTD back in August, I thought I'd probably let my membership here expire since we purchased a Victory. Well, I did, for a couple weeks, and really missed it. So I'm back onboard showing off our new ride. Since mid August we've logged about 5K on it. I think had I originally purchased a RSV and not the RSTD, I probably wouldn't be posting this but instead would still own the Venture. We love this Vision and wanted to share some pics. This is a great site and as Rumboogy said a couple weeks back, it's a shame more MC groups can't be this good. http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa76/looped1/CassvilleFallRideMissouri2011029.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa76/looped1/PopsArcadiaOklahomaTrip056.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa76/looped1/BikesBluesBBQandEurekaOct2011123.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa76/looped1/CassvilleFallRideMissouri2011507.jpg http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa76/looped1/NewPaintArcadiaandPopstrip149.jpg
3. Howdy all: I'm a whiz at putting 2 and 2 together and getting 22. So please confirm for me what seems obvious and I'm likely getting hysterically wrong. Want to replace the stock exhaust on an '08 RSTD...and after much research had just about concluded to do this with a set of RK muffs. Acquired the necessary brackets and VTwin clamp, and have a set of '03 vintage RK pipes on the way. Still a little confused about half-specific comments about punching out a plug on one of the two pipes (which one? what plug? does 'punch out' mean knock out completely or just radicaly perforate? etc). But that's not actually my main question. Have to admit that the pipes I REALLY would like to mount are a pricey bit of kit...the Vance and Hines Monster Ovals that are made for the HD Touring bikes, including the Road King. Given that these have a street price north of $550 a set, I'm reconciled to waiting a bit to fluff the bank account a bit before pursuing. Help me out here: If the stock RK pipes will fit on the RSTD... And the V&H pipes are a slip-on fitment for the RK... Does this mean that I will be able to mount these muffs on the RSTD, using the same brackets/clamps as for the OEM Harley muffs? Any special considerations (as apparently arise for mounting Screeming Chicken cans)? By the way, yes I've considered just mounting aftermarket slip-ons already configured for the Venture/RSTD, but have to say that I'm just not that jazzed about any of the makes available (Bubs, KW, 4-2-4s, etc)....But the MO's have tickled the lust button. Muchas Gracias, amigos
4. I am wondering besides this Forum and the venture's Forum I enjoy reading both forums and have received a lot of valuable info about My 07 RSTD. what other forums are there ? Just asking. Jim Bell Bagram Air Field Afghanistan
5. Hi all, I'm new to the forum and to RSTD's. After looking at bikes for about one year I had narrowed my possible choices down to either a RSTD or a Kawy Nomad. I missed one great deal on an RSTD but found another and picked it up yesterday. I've only put about 80 miles on it so far and I am very happy. More importantly, the wife is happy. I want to avoid mistakes made with past bikes. Does anyone use the 3M paint protection film and if so, can you give me your thoughts?

RSTD Fairings INFO Please

I have a 2007 RSTD and would like to put a fairing on it. I prefer a batwing or Stratoliner type. Memphis Shades seems to be the most reasonably priced aftermarket one but, with no Royal Star application. Will any other fit ? Has anyone used a Memphis one their bike? Is there away to modify a Stratoliner one? If anyone has put any one one their bike would you please tell what kind and how to do it. I know there are other threads on this but not with all the info. Thanks Reno
7. I've got an 06 RSTD & would like to get some slip-on's for it. I ordered a set from J&P. Bub slip-ons recommended by my Yamaha mechanic, but they are on backorder until maybe September. Any ideas or anybody have some used slip-ons for sale. I want a little noise on my day bike I ride to work. Thanks, Graderman46
8. Hey all, while I have my 08 Harley up for sale, and of course so much to do in our Michigan Winter, I have been looking at the different bikes out there. I looked at the RSTD and compaired the wet weight 844, to the RSV wet weight 869. Does it make sence that their is only a 25 pounds difference? I have taken off the trunk to a RSV and to me it was around 40-50 lbs., then add a fairing which I guess would weigh another 40 lbs., and the difference from a 5.3 gallon tank on the RSTD, comparied to the 6 gallon tank on the RSV. The windshield on the RSTD will weigh around 10-15 lbs I'm guessing, so maybe that would be a off set for the difference of weight from the tanks sizes and filled with gas. When I look at other manufactures weight differences between bikes, the RSTD is correct at 844 lbs., but the RSV should weigh around 910 lbs. Just a thought, Later-
9. Just put my 2005 RSTD in the shop for major maintenance (valve adjustment, plugs, etc, etc). I have a question: the maintenance schedule says to replace brake lines every two years. WHY??? I have had bikes most of my life, and I do not recall ever seeing anything in routine maintenance about replacing brake lines/hoses. As always, any help is appreciated.
10. The first bike night of the season and the wife and I ride down for a short look around and dinner. We park the bike and start walking when we see a Pearl White RSTD and a 1st gen. Venture, so I decide to move our 07 RSTD and park it beside the White RSTD. When I got back the owners of the two bikes were there. So I parked the bike and start talking with them when I said hey there is another RSTD then the Venture owner said there was six of us there with-in 20 feet of each other all RSTD with exception of the 1st gen. Venture. I thought this was a nice showing for the Royal Star bikes, when I had a VTX we could never seem to get a group committed to getting together.
11. Instead of trying to fit a trunk to my RSTD, I am interested in finding luggage that can create similar capacity to a Venture trunk and be attached the rear factory accessory luggage rack and the passenger sissy bar. Any real life experience with this type of product or suggestions would be appreciated. Mike
12. This may not be the place for this question, but I would like to know if you think the RSTD I have listed in the classified is overpriced (before I relist it on eBay). NADA (for what that's worth) shows a 2005 RSTD at $6830 for average retail. I apologize if this is the wrong place for this question, but I have learned a lot about my bike on this forum and do respect your opinions. Thanks. Mine is the 2005 one pictured in front of the Cypress Swamp sign on the Natchez Trace. Again, if this is inappropriate question on the forum, (moderators) just delete.
13. HELP!!!! you dont know how luckly we are to 1st ride a RSTD and to have a site like this, with people who will help you with yr situations. (well almost anything). I have a 06 RSTD 82k the AIS has oil leaking from around the the AIS Box?? Help????? what can I do to fix the situation. I have never removed it . But need to be cleaned and stop the oil. thanks,,
14. Hello again. i have another simple question that I would like to know the answer to before I buy a RSV. How simple is it to remove the rear trunk, passenger seat back and speakers and swap in the sissy bar from a RSTD. I like the trunk and speakers for long road trips....but for everyday commuting I think I would like the look of the OEM RSTD Sissy bar on the back. Is this like a 10-15 min swap or a major ordeal. I will be removing the 2 antennas since I don"t plan on using the CB and FM tuner....I will be using XM Satellite Radio. I was also going to put the rear speaker wires on quick disconnects .....so with that said....would doing this be an easy swap out. I would just buy a RSTD ...but I like the trunk for long trips and I love the fairing and stereo of the RSV. Thank you folks for your help.
15. As the temps go down, so does my riding time. That means I have more time to tinker in the garage and add stuff. Does any know the power budget for an 2006 RSTD? I have passing lights, and would like to know how much additional power is available for goodies...
16. I was unhappy with the positioning of my mirrors after putting the Flanders bars on my RSTD. Seemed like I had to turn my head too far to look at the mirrors. So I bought some bar clamps and moved the mirrors forward as seen in these pictures. Had to buy some mirror stems because I could not find any metric reverse thread nuts for the stock stem that required it. Now I only have to slightly turn my head !
17. Been talking to a some people I know and it seemed funny how many of us own both a Venture or RSTD AND a FJR..... Must be the best bikes out there
18. Just finished installing a HID headlight in my 05 RSTD from Canadian Cruiser Customizing. Have to say this was one of the easiest changes to do. Everything was plug and play and went together very easy. The hardest part is running the positive back to the battery. I zip tied my ballast to the back of the bracket that the headlight mounts too. Looks like you could also install it on the backside of the mount for windshield, but I didn't feel like taking everything back apart. Haven't had it out at night to tell the difference, but the installation was simple.
19. Just bought an 08 RSTD last Sunday, So far so good love the bike. got a buddy has an 06 model. Are there any major differences in the two model years ? Now I need to research tires as well as I dont like the Bridgestones on it ? Suggestions?
20. OK, so I would like to change the lighting up front. Y'all have any suggestions on what to get for driving lights for my RSTD?
21. Not to be confused with chicken parts..... Me and my riding has been nothing short of a trainwreck this summer. When the heat and humidity get beyond a point, I have to pretty much hang up the chaps because I just can't seem to breathe well enough to go; that or I just don't feel good enough to go. The flip side of that is that when the temp backs off a bit, it's usually because of rain and thunderstorms and MORE humidity. Anyway, that story is to set up this story! Because I haven't gotten out much and because I didn't get good results of my last 2 Battery Tenders, I didn't have anything keeping the charge up on the bikes. The GW has had an ongoing little issue with off idle performance and has been sitting basically all summer, since spring. The RSTD sat for about a month and a half, early in the year and had to be jumped to get it started. Recently, it sat for about a month for reasons I mentioned earlier and I knew that I was looking at another round of "fun with batteries." Well, the weather had been really crappy and I had done some late night research into battery maintainers. Based on what I found, I decided to buy a "Battery Minder", having the anti-sufation circuit in it. It will charge at I believe it's 1.3 amps up to 14.1V then revert to a float charge mode to keep the battery up; in this mode it will periodically hit the battery with specific hi frequency AC current to accomplish the anti-sulfation (the sulfation being what kills the batteries when they sit for long periods). I had been told that if a motorcycle battery (wet cell or other) goes dead, it's basically toast and has to be replaced. Now, the new Battery Minders I bought had a battery condition monitor included with one of them. They say to check the battery and if you get no indication the battery must be replaced. The RSTD had the absolute minimun indication, the GW battery had none! Well, not being one to just jump out there and drop $60 or $70 on another battery for the GW, I went ahead (in conflict with the instructions, I might add) and hooked it up and plugged it in. Ditto the one for the RSTD. The RSTD charged for about 24 hours and went to float mode. A day later, I felt good, the weather felt good, so I disconnected the Battery Minder and she fired right up and I went on my merry way. The Goldwing showed charge state for a full 2 1/2 days,(they recommend no more than 72 hours) then went into float mode just like the doctor ordered. What floors me is that the last time the battery on the GW went dead from sitting, like that, I had to replace it. That's why I was going to at least try to charge it up before I sprung for a new one! The battery is up full and with the BatteryMinder it should stay in top condition for a long long time (riding occasionally wouldn't hurt either, but that's a different discussion) Bottom line......I am sold on the BatteryMinder! I will not use another brand of maintainer again, unless the company itself just goes away; then whatever I get will have antisulfation or I won't have it....period. The proof is in the performance and the BatteryMinder has that in spades, IMHO! (and FWIW Northern Tool had them for ~$40)
22. Will the rear wheel off a 2005 RSTD fit on a 99 RSV?Part numbers are different, but will it fit?
23. I know some will say, "why?". I've wanted one prior to getting the rstd and finally took the leap. Found an 07 w/abs with 35k miles. Any how, i'll try it and see how it goes. If it doesn't work out it's gonna be an rsv or gw. Part of me hates to part with the rstd....and I may or may not regret it, time will tell. Will post pics when I get home with it.
24. Here's a question to everyone I've been trying to reason out in my head for quite some time... When you compare the RSTD or RSV 1300's to other types of bikes with v-twins that are said to have 1300 or higher cc's, what are we really comparing. I understand what 1300 means, just like I understand what 1700 means - but when you include the fact that the RSTD's and RSV's are 4 cylinder engines, what difference does that make? Should I feel uncomfortable talking about the power of my bike with a buddy who has a 1700cc or with another friend that has a 96ci? Are we talking about tourqe or horsepower or both or what? I would really like to have some ammunition in my back pocket so I can fire back at them when they say my bike is ONLY 1300cc's. My RSTD has their bikes beat on comfort but what about performance. What are everyones thoughts? I hope my question makes sense.
25. I bought my 06 RSTD new in July 06, and just turned 50K on the odometer. I swear it rides and runs just as good or better than it did on day one. Any ideas on how long one of these will continue to go before they are no longer reliable? I'm crazy when it comes to maintenance, changing the oil every 2K. All other maintenance "by the book". Cosmetically it looks like new. I love this bike, and want to keep it as long as practical. But, I want to continue to feel safe taking it for long road trips. Thoughts?
