  1. Yep, we got home Sunday night from the PIP that ended a week earlier. Denise and I spent the next 7 days wandering northern MN, nw WI, and a bit of upper MI. Looked for the least straight country roads we could find and hopped from state park to state park, geo-caching as we went. Road some beautiful country, mostly in decent weather (we got absolutely drenched once by Two Harbors, MN) on our RSV, and really enjoyed ourselves. Highlight roads included county 71 around Ten Mile Lake south of Walker, MN (new tar, lines painted, but NO signs whatever had been replaced after the ditch re-building, and the road curved and carved the hills along the lake-way fun, right Norm and Kim?), Highway 1 from Ely, MN to Lake Superior, Pierce County (WI) O from near Red Wing, MN north toward River Falls, WI, and a handful of roads that took us south from Marenisco, MI toward Woodruff, WI. We spent Sat and Sun in SE MN around the Winona area, and you could ride there for days and not run out of good roads. Wish we could have spent more time there and in SW WI, but that will have to wait for another time. Also have to echo what has been said about the PIP, great hosts, great place, great people, great food, great time. Such a diversity of people with the common interest of riding on 2 wheels, mostly Ventures. I learned a lot getting in on Maintainance Time as well. To report on the carb sync results, my mileage increased to 43-44 mpg, after having faded to the 40-41 area prior to the sync. Can't say that I can notice a difference in performance or smoothness, but the mpg's are there again. Owl, Denise made good use of the gaitors (sp) thru the week, sometimes when it was cool and they went over jeans, and sometimes when it was downright cold, and they went over everything else she had on. So thanks again. Look forward to crossing paths with all the folks at PIP again in the future. Wish we could have got to know the Canadian contingent better, but they got in about the time we were going to head to the hotel for the night on Sat (definite disadvantage for not camping on the grounds) and they were out on a group ride by the time we got there on Sunday, and hadn't returned by the time we left. That's about enough. Thanks again to Gary, Ann, Owl, and everybody for a good time. Larry:thumbsup2:
  2. Since no-one seems to be happy with the the 09's. Maybe we could vote for the Admin. and Mon. to come up with a form letter that we could all print and sign and then send a mass mailing to Yamaha. We did this in Ohio because of what they were using to fill in the cracks on the roads. Made them very slippery when wet. Didn't do any good, but we all got responses back.
  3. i'm gonna ride up to rhinebeck, N.Y. from harrisburg,pa. this weekend....anyone have any suggestions as to good roads to take...
  4. For those who have 550's; Just got back from a 4300 mile ride, Zumo locked up three times. Would not respond to anything. The solution is to unscrew the battery, count to ten and replace. It all comes back to normal. Also discovered that some of the route calculations involve some trully idiotic combinations - I guess the programing guys in Mumbai are not as swift as advertised! Also, don't blindly follow instructions ! this thing will repeatedly send you on secondary dirt roads and even off a clif if you are not carefull! Fording streams on dirt roads ain't my bag on a 900 pounder ! Yess, it did happen.
  5. We're headed to Southern IN on Saturday with 93 Venture and his wife. We'll be staying in Corydon Saturday and Sunday night. Looking forward to riding some good roads in that area and into Kentucky. Anyone in the area wanting to ride Saturday late afternoon or Sunday let us know.
  6. Hey guys, Over the weekend, my '03 Midnight started showing a weird problem. It's started cutting off under throttle! I have my iPod touch connected to it and at first, thought it was the cable, but today, the radio did the same thing. It lasts long enough to be annoying - after about 20 miles of country roads - but then it clears up, so no chance to examine anything and recreate the problem! Of course, it's six months out of warranty! Any ideas?
  7. Made a trip to "The Dragon" this past weekend and left there in awe. The dragon was "ok" but the surrounding roads were much better. We left at 7:00am for what should have been a 5-6 hour trip and 11 hours later we rolled into our motel parking lot. We did not want to go interstate so we traveled back roads through northeast Alabama and northern Georgia. I don't recall the road numbers but if you get a chance and are in no hurry get you a map and try to find Suches from Cartersville and travel through Wolf Pass over Blood Mountain ending up in Robbinsville, NC. You will travels roads the Dragon only dreams about. It is well worth the detour... Once you get there the Dragon/Cherohala loop is a must but be sure to add the Hell Bender to your "things to do list".
  8. :think:Remembering that I know nothing about how computers work....and this may be impossible...but is there any way that there could be a map put on the website for each state, with the ability for members to "red line" favorite routes that they have traveled. For instance, Gary and I plan on going to Kentucky next summer. I have never been to Illinois(except Galena and Savanna), Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky etc. Neither one of us like interstate travel and love the back roads. It would be nice to be able to see some routes that others have traveled and really enjoyed. We travel to Central and Southwestern Wisconsin all the time. Yeah, the Great River Road (35)is nice, but the smaller roads are so much twistier, scenic and less traveled. It would be nice to let others know which ones are worth riding. I know members are good about writing roads down, but it would be nice to be able to see it on an actual state map. I know we would have really used it this summer on our trip to the Black Hills. I don't know if it's even possible or how much work it would be, just thought I'd ask!
  9. We have been known to do rides! but this is going to be a real Ride!. Leaving out June 20th from SLC, Ut. to a nice lake in Roanoak, Va. where there is a cabin and sailboat waiting. Taking about 3+ weeks. Our trip route, right now, is as follows: - SLC to Steamboat Springs, Co. (done this run and it's nice) - Steamboat Springs to Colorado Springs using the mtn roads (of course) through Breckinridege and coming in the back door to Col. Springs. Great BBQ place in Manitou Springs and across the street is a drop dead, cardio disaster fudge shop. Mmmmm. - Col. Springs to Dodge City, Ks. I teach film making at a university, bought the rights to a book, author lives in Dodge.... business meeting you know.... - Next stop, Branson, mo. to visit the daughter who is the Media production manager for the Dutton family Theater. I think this will be a 2 day run. I see toll roads in Ok, and Ak. not sure about those... everything out here is 'free'ways ya know. We are actually going south out of Wichita to the 412 to Tulsa. Maybe staying there or Siloam Springs before heading to Springdale then NE to Branson. Some twisty roads there that are calling me.... - From Branson it will be west and south to Roanoak. Not sure on the route here.. up for suggestions. I think we are leaning towards getting to Roanoak but wandering when we leave heading back... so maybe catchin 64 might be the best? Route back--- - We are liking the idea of Knocksville and Nashville. Have not spent time in the country music capital of the universe (maybe 'cause country and us don't get along... personal issue of course).... but the city seems full of fun stuff to see of a day or so. Up for suggestions here as well. Or we could take a northern route back to Utah. Not really interested in pounding 70 or 80... done that... been there. So that's our adventure this summer. Input, comments welcome. We pack light, travel just fast enough to see the sights and live by the code "all destinations are subject to change if the mood strikes us".
  10. Have an '89 with two small cracks on the L faring just at the top by the stereo assembly. What is the best way to repair, they are about 1/2 inch long from the top around the trim edge and just under.?? Also, has anyone ever put higher gears in their Venture? I get 40 MPG average under 60 MPH on the back roads where I don't get on and off the throttle alot, but on the interstates, well that is a different story - my MPG is about 31 - 36 depending on the head winds. Have had Goldwings that got 48 on the back roads, and 45 on interstate. This Venture runs about 1000 -1,200 tighter than a Wing, need to put in higher gears or a sixth one!?!?!?!?!?!?! Thanks for any help or guidance! Caz
  11. Well it's time for our annual couples trip, best friend and his wife and us. This year we have rented a house outside Ferryville, Wisconsin. I've heard there are nice roads in almost any direction you head out. Also looks like its going to be some HOT weather. Anyone from that area recommend any particualr rides or places to visit? Thanks, Jay
  12. Planning on a vacation the first week in August and doing a tour from Buffalo through PA. Looking for the right roads to take, nice roads to ride, places to see, people to meet, places to eat, places to stay (not for free), places to avoid. Do want to spend some time in Lancaster and area. Any ideas would be welcome. We'll leave Monday am and want to be back by Sunday pm.
  13. Needing new tires soon, so: For those of you that run Venoms on your bikes, how are they on wet roads or in rain? Not that I go out looking for rain to ride in, but it happens some times. Just to look at them, they don't look as though they would channel away the water.
  14. I hate posting a "ride" here in the watering hole, but I am looking for maximum exposure to the locals of this area.. Hope this is OK.. Sunday May 19, suppose to reach mid 50's for temp, I am planning on at least a 5 hour tour(maybe longer). Starting at Tim Hortons in Smithville(10 am) and perhaps running out to Niagara on the lake, then back to the escarpment, along some not so well known beautiful roads, then along the Grand river close to Brantford, then across a few more hidden treasure roads to get to Ancaster, then finish up in Dundas..So let me know if your interested, either here, email, private message, whatever.. Brian.

    Accidents

Have had 5 bike deaths in last 2 weeks in my area. let's be careful out there, mostly all biker at fault. We all to be extra careful on the roads, everyone knows what we endure mixing it up with cagers on the roads. So not all of them give us the extra room we can use, leave the showing off to the pros that get paid for it. There is no where that we need to be that we take chances to cut a cage off to get to where we're going faster. Enough said.
  16. Planning a road trip from OKC to see my folks in Florida, fathers in a nursing home now, going to help mother. Mom wants me to cleanout the garage and take everything with me so I'll be driving the truck. Mapquest wants to route me a way I'm unfamilar with. Can someone tell me how the road is on Rt.280 between Birmingham, Al. & Columbus, Ga.? Then from Columbus, Ga. - Albany - Tifton? What is the speed limits on these roads? Do you have to slow down thru ever town? If I were riding a bike it would be my highway of choice but time is short.
  17. I am getting ready to replace my second set of dunlops. I have 18,000 miles on my 05 RSV midnight and I have gotten approximately 7,500 miles out of each. I am really tired of spening the money for the same tire and having them wear out so fast. I am wondering if anyone has suggestions on what tires to look in to next. I live in NJ and I ride 365 with the exception of sno covered roads. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. I am on a racing slick in the rear and the front is not far behind. I only ride two up a hand full of times a year and the rest is commuting, tours and rides each weekend. Thanks for any help you can provide.
  18. how meny of you,go for a ride, and just follow the north, south, east, west signs,as long as the road are paved, man there is a lot of roads out there, and not on the mapps, little towns,or just wide places,in the roads, the miles can realy add up

    Great ride - Northern PA

The co-pilot and I left yesterday early afternoon from the house, headed up to Williamsport, spent the night. This morning on up to Wellsboro to the Grand Canyon of PA, east on Rt. 6, and south on a combination of roads including Rt. 220. What a wonderful ride! Leaves are starting to turn, and the air was just the right degree of crisp.
  20. I picked this little bike up last week from a garage sale for $50.00, It has not ran for over 13 years. I changed the Oil, Plug and cleaned the tank out a bit. Got a new battery and cleaned the carb. and what do you know. she fired right up. My Question is when a bike sits that long is it normal for it to smoke for a while out of the muffler? (think i got a bad ring?) Valves?) My wife and I love going on the back roads here in Iowa but haven't since we bought the RSV.. I just don't like being on gravel roads with the much wight under me. Thanks, Jeff
  21. I am meeting my brother in Nashville to ride on Friday May 18th. Any recommendations on some nice roads we can ride around Nashville. We will probably "Venture" East from there. (Carolinas) How about my ride up from North of Atlanta on my way to Nashville. Thanks, Ross
