1. Last minute thought. Maybe you have a good area to ride. Me and a buddy are planning on riding Thursday and Friday leaving from Fredericksburg Va. We are about 3 hours from Gettysburg or about 3 plus hours from Seneca Rocks. We have been around Snowshoe and Cass area. We have been to the bride in West Va as well. In Pa we have been to the Lancaster area and been through Gettysburg. Anyone have any good loops, roads or sites to see in one of those general areas. We figure it will be cooler in the mountains. 2. Yep, not kiddin' ya,,, fed up with all this sitting around, looking at the computer screen, hobbling around on one leg,,,,reading the 'newspaper' watching all the scoots going past as though there is nothing going on,,,,,napping,,,,,eating,,,,,,,... After all the bike is ready, the weather is excellant,,, and all the bad drivers have gone south and the roads should be quiet,,,,,,,and best of all Mrs. Jopie is cooking supper,,,,,, get the cage ready hon,,, we're on or way.
3. I'm PUMPED !! My Wife and I just got back from riding the BRP from Cherokee to just North of Asheville. What a ride !! We just bought the 02 Midnight V a month ago and took the country roads all the way to Cherokee, then Tues took a ride on the BRP, and today came home. This was my wife's first long Motorcycle ride in her life. She was impressed with the Venture handling of the mountain roads. It might have been the driver (me) cautiously navigating and driving like a Grandpa, having white knuckles around the switchbacks and all that stuff. We enjoyed waving at all the other bikers and couldnt help being a little proud of our new toy. My wife stated "we need some biker clothes". Yeah, we don't look the part. We look like country come to town, but it was a blast even though. The Temp was in the upper 50's in the morning on the BRP and we wore jackets to keep warm. The MV I bought has Bub exhaust which sound pretty cool in the tunnels, especially when I laid into the gas. I saw two other Venture riders at a rest area but couldnt get their attention before they left. We had such a great time I had to tell the people here about the cool weather on the parkway. Thanks a bunch to Sleeperhawk and the Mech for helping me before my trip. Hopefully I will be able to meet others around the site and maybe go to Vogel. We'll see ya on the road...
4. Well we've hit 12 rustic roads so for for the rustic roads awards program here in Wisconsin. I sent our pics off to the DOT a few minutes ago for our Rustic Roads Motorcycle Tour patch. We'll send in the rest after we hit 25 for the certificate. I put the pics in my photo album. Just for giggles, I asked them what might happen if a person was to hit all 107 rustic roads in WI. I wonder if I'll get a reply. I know it's not that exciting. It gives us an excuse to ride. Beside, I'm easily amused sometimes.
5. The thread about a member (Charlie) buying a KLR650 got me thinking about riding the dirt roads. I live on the edge of the Chattahoochie National Forest, so besides having lots of twisty 2 lane roads around here, there are even more narrow dirt roads and trails thru the forest. Maybe the 90 degree heat got me thinking about how much cooler the woods are than the asphalt? I almost bought a KLR650 this past week too. But I held back while I looked around and have almost decided that I want something in the 200-250cc class. I don't need a machine capable of sustained highway speeds, the dirt roads start 2 miles from my driveway. The smallest displacement machine I looked at is the one I'm actually leaning towards, a Yamaha TW200. It has a low-low gearing and a big fat rear tire that shouldn't get stuck anywhere. On the down side it has a top speed of 65mph and only 16 horsepower. Does anyone here ride something like this also? Other options are the 225/230/250cc machines from Honda/Kawasaka/Yamaha. http://randyrick.us/motorcycles/TW200.jpg
6. I might be coming down to the vial duct Saturday. It would be nice if someone could take us on some good riding roads or tell me how to get to them. Just PM me if you can meet up with me or if you can tell me where the good riding roads are. Thanks hairman:thumbsup:
7. After having spent the weekend at Freebird's Maintenance Day working on a few bikes, having a bunch of laughs, and meeting some of the nicest people on the planet it was my privilege to have Jonas from Iceland ride with me from Ohio to Pennsylvania to stay with Jean and myself for a few days. We rode some of Pa.'s most beautiful roads, met some very interesting people along the way and I even got Jonas to pull his bike into my "little shop by the creek" for an oil change, a Carb. Sync. and a few coats of wax. Jonas turned out to be a VERY intelligent and articulate gentleman, well versed on many subjects, and was full of praise for Jean's endless home cooking and my sense of humor. Both Jonas and I rode locally after the repairs on his bike and he found the rural area I live in to be one full of windy roads and endless beauty. I, myself looked upon the area I live in with "new eyes" as I took him from 400 feet above sea level to 2900 feet above sea level in just under 12 minutes. His bike ran flawlessly as did mine and we were just two riders, with no agenda, letting the pavement flow beneath our tires. I am sure it will be memories that Jonas will have for a lifetime, as will I. A special thanks goes out to Don Nelson (Freebird) for opening up his home and allowing me to visit, (you sir are a man among men!) and Dan and Sheri (IH TRUCK GUY) for having the courage to let me pretty much tear the top end off his bike. It is a pleasure to be a part of this wonderfully diverse group of people. A few pics of Jonas are attached, Earl and Jean
8. Hi Guys I know there is a lot of info on here about tyres, but I'm sorta comming at it from a different angle. I live in Ireland, I can be anywhere in the country in less than 3 hours so I'm not looking for a tyre that can put up mega mileage, in fact would be more than happy with 7,000 miles from a set. What is more important to me is grip, stability and wet weather handling I am running Dunlop 404's at the moment and they do little to inspire confidence on the wet greasy Irish roads. I have a choice of 3 tyres Metzeler: ME880 ( german made ), Michelin: Commander or Continental: Milestone CM2. I cant get Avon Venom over here for some reason. Any thoughts would be much appreciated
9. This morning I rode in to work and was given a gift by the city of a surprise of loose gravel on pavement by the city. Right on a highway off ramp. I made it to work safe, and decided that the only way to get things done is to be noisy. I decided to email the mayor and politely described what was wrong and how a simple sign warning me would have made the highly dangerous situation his guys caused a less dangerous one. I also informed him that another motorcyclist may get seriously hurt if they don't get a sign posted right away. I also let city officials know about sand on the roads and other problems that make a road incredibly dangerous to a motorcycle. Do you? are you your community's Squeaky wheel that complains about dangers and dangerous roads?
10. We are planning a trip to the Southeast Ark/Southwest Ok area for RV camping and take in the countryside. We have been looking all over the Internet at different roads and byways to find some scenic and fun roads to travel. Does anyone have some suggestions as to which roads are the best for motorcycling. Keep in mind my lean & speed control monitor will be riding with me. Moakster
11. I have already gotten some great ideas for stops along the trip from PA to Maine this august. Thought that I would start another thread in the favorite roads and destinations section and maybe get some more suggestions. Thanks for any additional info!! Steve
12. The park is in the sierra Nevada's in central california. The park is very densely forested so most of what you see from the roads are two lines of trees. There are some areas with views and they are some great views. the roads are some great riding. The reason I went to this park was to see the sequoia trees. That wood pecker tried to peck his way into the motor home for 3 days.
13. Well now, I'm going to be flying up to Cleveland OH Friday and picking up a 2001 Venture. http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g158/jbmaynard/Yamaha%20Venture/CarMotorcycleOct2008032.jpg So I want to take a pretty direct route from Chardon OH to Cleveland GA, but I want to avoid the interstates and enjoy some nice roads. I'll be nursing a bad shock, so I'm not looking for the best twisty roads, just some nice backroads, small towns, and scenic byways. I haven't started looking at details for this part of the route yet, but it looks like I'll probably leave Cleveland OH on 42 through Mansfield and skirt west of Columbus. When I get to London take 56 across I-71 to Mt Sterling and pick up 62 skirting east of Dayton and Cincinatti to head for Lexington KY. I'm hoping to get on the road Friday afternoon and ride for a while and find a room somewhere between Cincinatti and Lexington. If I get an early enoug start I'd like to make it to Lexington, but I know that's going to be a stretch. Saturday I'm thinking maybe leave Lexington on 27 south to Somerset and then on into Tennessee and all the way to cross I40 at Harriman TN. Then maybe scoot over to Lenoir City and Sweetwater where I can pick up 68 and head back through Tellico Plains and around Pine Ridge pick up 294 to 64 where I can catch 129 back down to Blairesville and on home to Cleveland GA. I'm open to suggestions for roads to avoiv or roads you recommend. Unfortunately I won't be able to stop and smell the roses and I'll need to be on time to meet a couple of my riding buddies who are going to head north Saturday morning and meet me somewhere around Sweetwater TN and escort me home. Thanks again to Freebird for checking out the bike and everyone who has posted here sharing your experiences and knowledge. You really helped me out and I look forward to meeting you on the road one day soon. James
14. We spent 3 days in this area the scenery is magnificent the roads are good. I would recommend a stop here.
15. Back from Calif Trip, ( Car trip, not bike ) . Pretty good weather. I got to ride my favorite Old Roads, from High School days. " Aliso Canyon Road " ----- " Big Tujunga Canyon "--- Calif. SR-2 Via , Angeles Crest Highway. And, " Little Tujunga Canyon " A couple of the Best rides in the Los Angeles, Ca. area. ( link-- http://www.pashnit.com/roads/cal/LittleTujungaRd.htm ) Little Tujunga canyon is one of the featured rides, on Pashnit Tour's. Ride was on a 97 FLH, very well broke in , high milage, Very well maintained, old war horse. ( belongs to sister and Her hubby ) Quite a hand full of bike on that winding road !!! -----( 2 ea. photo's attached ) There was a massive number of riders on these two roads, last Sunday. Back in 1959 and 1960 I might pass 4 or 5 bikes running these two roads, ( on my old 47 WL, or 55 matchless, and 60 Puch ) But this trip, must have passed at least 100 bikes or more running the road. Saw one group of at least 30 Vintage, and new Triumphs. ( no police were encountered, or seen ) Total ride was only about 125 miles, but it was a great ride !! If anybody is interested, my new 08 TrailBlazer Averaged 21.58 MPG, for the entire 2550 mile trip from SEA to LAX and back. It has the Inline 6 engine installed. Average Fuel Price, up and down the West Coast, was about 2.35 per gallon. OK, thats done, now time to cut the grass, and wash the cars !! And rideing season just around the corner, get those tune ups done folks !!!
16. My father has a RSV 1999 and I just bought a wrecked 2000 RSV (starglide). I have it almost road ready (cant get my saddle bag open, going to try to get the pinch pin out, and need front fender, but is rideable.) He is over 50 and as well is my mother (they ride together frequently). I am 19 and my girl is 19 as well. We are planning to go on our first "big trip" as a family. I plan to leave my hometown (now Orono, ME) (UMO student) and head for Bar Harbor, Maine and hop on the Cat and blast across the ocean to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, then to halifax and then up to PEI (to look at a vet school for the girlfriend and check out the sights). Here are some questions i have for those who have been or know anything about the area. What are some good stops? roads? cities? events? or awesome highways. i hear there are highways that go along cliffs by the ocean. This to me would be freaking awesome. Also hotels? Main concern is a good ride on GOOD roads. Being from Maine, i am used to the ****iest of roads, cracks, ruts, and sand everywhere. So for those who have traveled you know what the best riding is. Curvy, hilly, smooth and wide (like my women).. So any help planning this trip would be great. Thanks again. Also looking for some parts.. radio switch (left handlebar peice), front fender. Pipes, dad had some nasty's, and they rusted in one season (cheap ass pipes) though they sounded awesome. Can anyone direct me to a link where the HD pipes are installed and a possible how to, and parts needed to complete this conversion. thank you since i took off my trunk (the top was broken) i have parts available off rear of bike trunk rack, trunk bottom, interior trunk pecies, trunk latches, cb, truck mounting rack, passenger back rest black, and basically everything attached to the trunk.
17. the Withdrawal of my Membership at Venturerider.org !! !! NOT !! You won't get rid of me that easy !!! :whistling: But i'd like annouce the newest Addition to my Stable .... a brand new 2009 VMAX. http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto292%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto294%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto295%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto296%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto297%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto298%28Medium%29.jpg http://wkhost.webkicks.de/squeeze/Docs/09/Foto299%28Medium%29.jpg It was last Tuesday. My Wife gave me a ride over to the Dealer where i've ordered the Bike on 07/18/2008. My Wife dropped me at the Dealer and they have had everything preped as it was spoken over the Phone. My Payment went over the Bank the Friday before, so all we had to do was inspecting the Bike, get first Information's from the Sales Guy and off i go. My Wife left a bit earlier, because she had another Appointment at the Office. I said; i'll be there in two Hours or so ... When i took of the first Time, it was a strange Feeling. The Bike is fairly high, but the Pull this Motor produces is noticeable even at off Idle. When i had accustomed my self to the Seating Position, i was out of Town and riding over some wide and not too cornery Back Roads. The Asphalt was cold, it was only 4 Degrees Celsius that Day and with new Tires and cold Roads, you gotta take it easy. I was only revving up to 3 or 3.5 k because i don't want to ruin my Ride on the first Encounter. I stopped in front of the old Church to take the Pics and have a Smoke and grin onto my new Bike. After i took off, i was more encouraged and getting more on the Motor. I revved up to 4.5 k and some more but only with slightly opened Throttle. This Motor is awesome. I'm sure it will pull my Arms out soon. I arrived at the Office were my Bikes are sitting after 1.5 Hours and 35 mls ridden. My Wife said i was grinning all the Way from left to right Ear. I think she's right, i have some Problems with the Muscles in my Face since. The Bike will sit another 4 to 6 Weeks until the Weather clears up and i'm able to give it the Treatment it's ought to. Please refrain from Comments about how ugly this Bike looks. I know, and i don't like some Aspects like the Head Light and the Signals myself. I didn't buy it because of the Look, this will change anyway. I bought it for the Motor, the Frame, the Suspension, the Brakes. Everything else will be changed anyway sooner or later.
18. I do no know if this the correct place for this. There is a Hells Conyon Rally at Baker City,Oregon on June 12-15 2009. For anyone interested in going you can look up the info at www.hellscanyonrally.com. I signed up for the first time. Sounds like alot of fun. I hunt in that area and there is alot of good roads to ride and alot to see. Maybe we'll see some of you people up there.Let us know and maybe we can set up a meet while up there. I have been told it is like a small Sturgius. We are looking forward to it.
19. This looks like a good program for people that ride in Wisconsin http://www.dot.wisconsin.gov/safety/vehicle/motorcycle/rusticroads.htm
20. Hi, Over the 3 years I've owned my 87 VR 1300, I've averaged 36-37 mpg. While this is right in the mid-range of what a bunch of y'all get, I was always perplexed by the 45 or even 50 mpg-ers. FWIW, I've checked all the usual suspects (fuel levels, new diaphragms, pressure sensor working, new plugs & tuneup, etc). I've experimented with up to four 9/16" holes in the airbox lid which did little to nothing. Then I came across 5bikes (Chuck) and his recommendation to lower the carb metering needles, that it runs rich from the factory in the needle range. Hmmm... Well, after some foolin' around, I arrived at the following: - Needles lowered .050". - All extra holes in airbox taped over (didn't run well with needles lowered AND holes open). It's running well and for several tanks now I've averaged 40 mpg with the same driving cycle and style I always do. I pulled one spark plug after these few tanks and found that it's very light gray on the ground electrode, light tan on one side of the insulator, the rest of the insulator is white, and just a bit of black on the end of the threaded portion. Seems about right with the detergents in today's gas. A 10% increase with this adjustment is good, but only half the story. 5bikes gets high 40's on his 1200 but rides almost exclusively country roads and in no hurry either - steady 55-65. I commute to work which is about 1/3 Interstate, the rest mostly suburban / rural roads with a little city. On the Interstate I'm doing 75-90, and other roads I like to accelerate briskly to somewhat over the speed limit (shame, shame). Chuck asked me if I'd run a tank or two slower to see what happens. Thru a supreme effort on my part, I rode the Interstate at 65-70, kept the rural and city roads at or below speed limit and accelerated very gently - for one tank - I couldn't do it any longer :-) The results for that tank? 43 mpg - best I've ever done. So now I'm trying to find a happy medium - a little more spirited so it's more fun, but not as fast as before which will also be better on my driving record. (My current tank, judging by the behavior of the gas gage, will probably end up at 41 or 42.) If I truly ran a tank on just country roads doing 55-65 I'd probably get 45. (It also seems that the 1200's get a little better mpg than 1300's.) I've always heard, and it makes total sense, that driving slower produces better mpg. On one hand I knew my wrist is a wee bit "leaden", but pretty much denied to meself that I was aggresive enough to cause poor mileage. Then I'd read posts here, one says it's all in the wrist, another says their bike gets "40 no matter how they ride". Well, I took numbers, did my best to control the variables, and this is the result. Jeremy
21. I found a couple of vids on youtube taken in and around Nelson BC where the Kruisn the Kootenays Rally is going on in July 2009. I thought it might be good to give everyone a look at the scenery and roads we will be riding on. Youre all invited to come on out and enjoy!! more info at http://24.72.54.92/kruisnthekootenays.htm [ame= ] [/ame] [ame= ] [/ame] [ame= ] [/ame]
22. Out getting lost yesterday in a part of the State I am not really that familiar with. I usually head West towards the Blue Ridge where there is much less traffic. I decided to explore the area East of 95 and South of 17 between F'Burg and Richmond. There are really several great quiet curvy and twisty scenic roads down there. A real nice ride is Sparta Road to Newtown (721) to Rt 14 (The Trail). I think I was the only one on the entirety of these roads for most of the trip. When 14 dumped out on to Rt 33 at Shacklefords, I made the East turn and the first thing I saw was a Silver RSV going the opposite way on 33. Then on the way back to F'burg, I had another RSV along with his pack of HD and Honda friend accompany me most of the way back. I can't remember when I saw two in one day just out and about. Anyway, there are several great little country roads in that area I defined. If you haven't explored them yet, you should. I really enjoyed the ride and I think you would too. Ride safe, TTW
23. Well I am an all brand rider, don't care what ya ride so I was invited to the SWOKZ(South West Ohio KZ) ride,a small group. I could not make the actual ride so I did my own to get there and back..wanted to meet the small group. I ran some roads I grew up on,they are now four lane highways but the old roads still remain.I got lost a little and forgot a lot.I am rolling down RT68 south of Mt.Orab OH and see this covered bridge, pic above, well ya know I just gotta stop..it has an arch in it,first time I have seen that in a wooden covered bridge so I renamed it the XS Heaven Archway Bridge:-) RT.68 is flat and a little boring so I pick up RT353 to Rt. 763...now I am talking, They had too much time on their hands years ago cause these rock walls were everywhere............. A beautiful area, what southern Ohio is about...
24. At the end of the month I'm going to take a few day off and head up to Northwest Michigan with the wife and a few friends. I was hoping we had some members here that could suggest some good roads to ride, places to eat, and a cheap place to put my head on a pillow, places not to go, and so on. On my map rt22 looks like a good road?
25. Yesterday about 3pm a friend called out of the blue and asked if I wanted to accompany him on a quest to ride through the last bits of Ike to go through Illinois to pick up a new bike trailer about 100 miles away. Not thinking......I said yes. Got on the leather, thinking that it hadn't rained in a couple hours (got 8 inches of rain, the previous two days) I brought the rainsuit, but didn't put it on. Temp in the low 60's, put on the Nolan with the full face shield. Roads were wet, we rode in and out of sprinkles and light rain about every 15 minutes. had to detour twice around flooded roads. Picked up the trailer (NICE) and then followed my friend home with my new fog lights lighting him up because he didn't have any lights on the trailer. We rode in total darkness for about an hour, but made it home, took roads with light traffic and kept close together so his reflecters were always lit. This was a ride that stretched my "envelope" as I haven't ridden in the wet much for over 20 years (like a lot of you, I took a break for 20+ years between motorcycles). My '86 VR was a total joy. Fairing kept all water off me except on the helmet, and the bike ran great. My first really big touring bike and I wish I could buy a brand new one just like it. Come-on Yamaha, bring back the VR.
