  1. Just returned from a great ride to Davis, WV with my lovely bride. 501 miles round trip. Saturday was fabulous riding weather. Today was a little toasty at about 95 degrees. The roads around Davis are great riding roads. Unbeknown to us there was a rally there this weekend. There was about a bazillion bikes. 99% HD. We did see one Indian and two Ventures. Could be a good spot for a future VR Rally. Very rider friendly and lots to do. I hope everyone else had a great weekend. Now, back to reality.
  2. All I can say is wow. Just got back last weekend from 6 days of riding in the hills of WV. I love twisties but there are so many there it got to the point where I was happy to see a straight road. The roads are in good shape and very little traffic making for some really great riding. The people were very friendly also. I highly recomend a trip there if you have never been there.
  3. If anyone is planning a motorcycle trip to a part of Canada you havnt been before, maybe check out www.Vridetv.com . They have ridden a VRod across Canada and taken pretty high quality video from just about everywhere in Canada. They have found some great spots and even caught some wildlife like bears and Rocky Mountain sheep in their travels. They are mostly short videos, but they will give you a great idea about the roads and the type of the terrain and amenities around. Ill start you off with the Alberta Badlands and Dinosaur Provincial Park, just because its not too far from here. http://www.vridetv.com/sddinosaurprovpk.html Brian:smile5:
  4. I'll be going down to tell City for work and will be bringing the RSV. Anyone from the area there that can suggest some good roads to ride in the area? Also, good eats?
  5. It was epic, at least for me. 4424 miles in 9 calendars, 7 riding days, all of it towing a trailer. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4114/4786266951_9ea6715e72.jpg I had been planning this trip for months, laying in supplies and gear. I intended it to be a trial to a shorter but more camping-oriented trip coming up in September. That one doesn't have as many fall-back options, so I wanted to shake the bugs out NOW. There were bugs, and please note that I will be posting a trailer-centric message in that forum, but in this post will just mention in passing the issues I had. My trip actually was to start a week-ago Friday (7/17). I wanted to get a jump on the trip, since I was flying my wife Jamie to Indianapolis to avoid the longest days. I had to be there in time to get her at the airport, so I left after work Thursday. I ran up to Shreveport to have dinner with a friend, then rode on the freeways to Jackson, MS. I wanted to avoid deer, so I took the major roads. After three hours sleep, I headed north. It was my first real night riding with the HID, and I have to say that I wasn't impressed. It just didn't seem that much brighter than my old Silverstar Ultra. I didn't see the doe feeding on the shoulder until she was lit by the passing lamps, for example. However, one fellow got pissed at me and tailgated me for a while with his high beams on. I guess it was plenty bright for him. LOL I was just considering braking and then tailgating him with the high beams when he slowed and turned off his brights. No harm, no foul. I completed an iron butt by 2PM, but didn't print the form nor have the receipts, so I let it go. Besides, I already have my certificate. I got to Indy around 4:30 and relaxed until her plane came in. I was so relaxed, that I forgot that there was a time zone difference! I took the hotel shuttle and got there just in time to collect her. The next day we traveled to Battle Creek, MI, where my family still lives. We had a short diversion to Ohio. LOL One thing I saw right away was the casinos. In Michigan?! Things change, I guess. Sunday was the family reunion—the reason for the trip—and an off day. I did a minor trailer repair (see other post) and we went to the reunion on the bike. It was nice family time. Monday we went to the Soo Locks in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Jamie had her first pastie in Mackinaw City, and it was delicious! The Mackinaw Bridge was scary to cross—the solid lane was closed for construction and we rode on the grating. I hate that stuff! At least it wasn't windy! The Soo wasn't busy, and we enjoyed watching a tour boat go through and I explained how the locks worked. Then we had an adult beverage before heading to the state park to camp. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4101/4809470274_1644223e42.jpg http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4810290320_741b8295b0.jpg It was our first night really camping with the bike. Our previous trial included a friend with a car, which carried supplemental stuff. This time we were on our own. The Powerlets I'd installed on Roxie had worked perfectly, keeping our electronic tethers charged. Now, it inflated the air mattress—almost. It turns out that a hole had worn in it. We rode back to Sault Ste Marie and got a patch kit, and it lasted most of the night. By morning, we were caught in the floppy water-bed feeling deflated air mattress. Ha! Tuesday, we packed and had breakfast at the diner outside the state park. Those were the greasiest hashbrowns I had ever experienced. I am glad I had listened to the LD riders' advice and packed Kaopectate. The roads along the Whitefish Bay Scenic Byway were gorgeous and deserted. We stopped to experience Tahquamenon Falls, which were even better than I remembered. http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4123/4812710574_a8f5a1efd7.jpg We hustled to Marquette, where I'd planned to get pasties and eat at a park by Lake Superior. However, the dark rain clouds and trailer repairs forced us to change plans. We left Marquette in a heavy rain that changed to a drizzle until we got to the Keweenaw Peninsula. We gassed up in Houghton, then took recommended routes along the western edge of the peninsula. By the time we took the Brockway Mountain Drive, skies were blue with fluffy clouds. Even so, we were done with the outdoors following the rain, and elected to stay in a motel instead. Snow gauge http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4075/4828386218_7c22f8f9ea.jpg The beginning of US41 http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828386706_02392e293b.jpg US41 is LONG! 1990 miles to Florida http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4080/4827779821_2ceb181148.jpg I was struck at how many conversations we heard of return visitors to Copper Harbor. SO many people return again and again. It seemed like a pleasant, tranquil place, and the thimbleberry cobbler was delish. I would like to go back. Wednesday, we took US-41 south out of Copper Harbor. Those first dozen miles are incredible, probably the best roads I can remember. Smooth, twisty, and covered by a canopy, they are magic! The remainder of the roads to Green Bay were pretty, but mostly looked the same. I put Jamie on a plane and then my solo trip resumed. I began to pound the pavement hard, eating up miles. I met a friend in Wausau, and continued to Minneapolis. I got there by 9PM, and had a late dinner with a friend. She insisted I try the burger at the Buffalo Tap, since she knows I am an avid burger connoisseur. It was "good", perhaps the best in the Minneapolis area, but would only get a B by Texas standards. Buffalo Tap Burger http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4137/4828387308_7bbc4c7d37.jpg Rain was coming, and I didn't want to fight rush hour traffic with wet roads, so I was traveling by 5AM. I wanted to get to Omaha by dinner time, so I of course went to Fargo. LOL! I had to collect North and South Dakota for my ride map. Minnesota and the Dakotas have surprisingly good terrain. Maybe it is that I am used to Houston Flat, but I loved these roads. What I didn't love was the construction. SO MUCH CONSTRUCTION! Very irritating! I am glad that they are spending the stimulus money (finally), but seriously. 300 miles of construction would be plenty, don't you think? It was raining or threatening rain until I got to Iowa, so I wore my rain gear. That did a great job of keeping in my body moisture, so by the time I got to my friend's in Omaha by 7PM, I was a stinky mess. Luckily, they had both a shower and a cold adult beverage (or two). The next day (Friday) was my first non-riding day since the Sunday before. I hung around town, met friends, and showed my friend's wife how to add water to her Suzuki Intruder's battery. She loved learning how to do something for herself, and an hour's labor just worked up my appetite for the burger at Stella's. Now, this burger is justifiably famous. It gets a very solid A from me. The fries were great as well. Stella's in Omaha: remember it! http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4140/4821785478_1a4d2cfb1b.jpg I wanted to be home yesterday (Saturday), so I got an early start. My phone kept thinking I had a text message, and kept making a noise every 15 minutes. It was my alarm, so I hesitated to turn it off. But when I rebooted it, the noise stopped and I still got my alarm. I was on the road by 5:15 despite a nearly sleepless night. Not much to report for yesterday, except a 900 mile day. Kansas and Oklahoma had some really nice roads. I dodged a bullet coming into Houston, when a terror of a storm blew in. My route let me thread the needle, and I stayed dry. Eventually most parts that I went through got 3+" of rain. Like I said at the top, I went 4424 miles on what amounted to a trial trip for the real McCoy in September. Most of my miles will be with the wife on that trip, I want them as easy and trouble free as possible. The technique of flying her so as to skip the longest days worked really well. She has shown that she can do a few 350 miles days without complaint. I'm looking forward to those! Dave
  6. In a few days we, and 4 other couples, will be heading to SW WI for a week of crucid, up-and-down roads. One RSV, 3 wings, and a Buell of some kind. Can't wait to get going. We will be staying near Victory, WI, and riding both sides of the Mississippi in the area. Just wondering if any of you have any "don't miss" roads, parks, eat spots, or anything else that you would like to recommend for us. We have some tentative routes planned out, but they are subject to change or being completely thrown out for other ideas. Thanks in advance. Larry

  8. Wife's company is offering a transfer to a position in Danville, KY, 35 miles southwest of Lexington give or take. I wonder if the riding in that area is better then the flat barren roads of the Texas panhandle.
  9. Todd, are you by chance off this Saturday, Jamie and I and a few others from our motorcycle ministry are going out Saturday and well be passing your neck of the woods, headed for the Col.'s place for lunch and up to Suches and other parts, love to have you come along especiall since you know those roads very well. We will be leaving the Newnan area around 8-8:30 am, so hope you can meet up with us.
  10. I have a big trip planned to ride from Atlanta GA to Vancouver Island, I need to arrive there on May 8th.. I am sure some of the roads I would like to travel will be good and I am planning to try to do as much back roads as possible. I am a little concerned about the mountain passes primarily due to snow but I can avoid most places if I have to.. I was kind of planning on camping a couple of nights then hosteling/hotelling it the other nights.. I was thinking I would need to leave about April 30th to May 1st to get there by the 9th.. My plan is to Ride from Atlanta to Seattle WA then take a Ferry to Vancouver Island Never done a solo trip like this before so I appreciate any good advise from my fellow riders.. I have new tires, Heated riding gear, a good saddle and my bikes been serviced so I have all the gear I think I need just need some good routes going North West that I can ride that will keep me covering the country in an efficient time frame Thanks for your help and tips Stewart (Twowheelsonly) UPDATED INFO TO ORIGINAL MESSAGE Proposed Ride Route I have ridden 500 to 700 miles per day with not too much problems.. I usually need a 3rd day to rest up so I can probably knock off a couple of hundred miles on that day, I plan to ride the super slab if I need to catch up on my time, subject to weather or other delays, I have tentatively picked back roads that travel through or by the following cities: Atlanta to Nashville TN, to St. Louis, to Kansas City MO, to Denver CO, to Cheyenne, to Jackson WY to Idaho Falls ID, to Spokane WA to Seattle to Victoria BC I have traveled the CA and coast routes in a cage many times.. I think I will plan a southern trip next year to see the southern states.. I appreciate the input and advise! Stewart (Twowheelsonly)
  11. Jamie, myself and 2 friends from church went for our first official ride of the season, before it even started I stalked a 1st gen in Newnan, Ga. He was waiting on his friends to ride, he was on a very nice blue 93, that he just purchased, he didnt know about the site so I informed him it was the place ;to be for a Venture owner, he said he would check it out, his name was Charles, so make sure you give him a warm welcome when he checks us out. We planned on eating at Col. Poole's BBQ in Ellijay, but we got there a tad early, so we went on riding, before we left Ellijay I spotted a Black Cherry RSV at a light, face looked familiar but he didnt see us or ignored us, not sure which. This was around 10:30 am. We went on up to Suches, Ga. and had a very good lunch at Two Wheels Only. We had some great roads to ride and all total we did 375 miles of great roads, but we had to keep slowing down to let the other two Harley riders catch up, they just couldnt handle the twisties as well as Jamie and I..........Great day, low temp started about 60, and got up to about 83 by the time we got home.........The Venture ran perfect, especially since I fixed the one bad diaphram I had. And how was your day?
  12. I'm moving on... Thank you all, especially to Free Bird, and perhaps others the keep this site going that are unknown to me. Sold my Venture and bought an FJR. The Venture will always hold a special place in my memory like my R5C and TX650. An awesome bike for long straight roads. This site's tech info got me through a clutch upgrade and valve adjustment. Thank you again. Thank you all. Ride on, Slab Pig
  13. Here is a photo show of some of the "Back Roads Of Texas" photos on their face book! http://www.photoshow.com/watch/MH2HV8my Phill
  14. It's time for me to plan our annual road trip. Our oldest son has picked Kentucky. We will be leaving from Iowa, going interstate through Illinois, Indiana, then starting in Louisville, KY and riding the state for a week. We like to ride on quiet roads rather than 4 lanes. We've never been there so I'm asking for help on roads that are really scenic rides. Also, if there is any places that are "must see's". We will be moteling it, instead of camping this time. We tend to stay in small towns (pop 250-2,000)and stay away from large city's. It's always fun to check in to a local motel and walk to the nearest pub/diner, so if anyone has any suggestions I would sure appreciate it. Thanks for any input... Deb & Gary
  15. Got off at 3PM today and ran home to go for a ride. Hit 40 today with the sun shining. The DC is finally seeing a little bit of a warm up. I only went out for an hour but boy did it feel good. Lots of salt and sand on the roads, at least along the sides so taking it easy is required in the turns but at least I was riding. Oh yeah, did I mention I got to ride today.
  16. Roll out of South Florida on July 8th, to macon Ga. Macon to Little Sturgis KY on the 9th (Stay 2 days) head north to Potato creek Ind.on the 12th arriving late afternoon, stay til the 15th, from their I'm not counting the days, but... 17. Well I did my part to try to make the roads safer for all of us. I filled all 3 of my deer tags 3 total. How did everyone else do in the hunting season this year?
  18. Dirt roads? We ain't afraid of no dirt roads! Stu and Marvin...any of this look familiar??? We did run into a fellow from California who said he figures in Montana and Idaho the term road construction really means "sent out for repairs." Teri (Roja of Pakidaho)
  19. This is absolutly a beautiful town. The hills and roads are great. People here are friendly. My only problem was I came from S. Ms through Atlanta. What a mistake! Traffic was terrible. Be heading back tomorrow through Franklin and Murphy to Cleveland. This was a quicky so I'll have to come back to do all the roads around here. Pisgah NF I was told was pretty. Anyway, got some good footage on my gopro. Ride safe all.
  20. Looking for folks' opinions on tires that they have found to perform well on wet roads. The OEM Bridgestone's were a bit greasy on the wet roads. When they wore out, I got Dunlop 404's. They have held well on the wet roads, however, the rear 404 is ready for replacement and only lasted for 7000 miles. Traction is more important to me than mileage, however, I would like something that would get me closer to 10,000 miles. As we all know, the concept of traction on dry roads is rubber contact and traction on wet roads is tread configuration. While the Avon Venom's and the Dunlop E3's look like great dry road traction tires, they seem to be a little short on tread configuration for wet roads. Your experiences with tires that performed well on wet roads is appreciated. Please provide both your traction opinion and service mileage. Thanks, Phoenix
  21. I was at a local Dealer this past Saturday for a 'show and shine'. My 07 wasn't entered, I just went to look and for the free Hot dogs. Anyway, while in the parking lot at my bike, a couple guys with older Suzuki 750s commented on my shirt that had the 'Tail of the Dragon' logo on the back & asked if I had run the dragon. I said that I had last summer and that it is alot of fun. I also said that some people on here and others I have talked to have told me of other roads in that area that have even more twisties. We went on talking about the roads down there and I told them that after a few hours, I had to find an Interstate for some straight roads, so I could cover some distances. And that being from Nebraska, I'm not used to curves all day long. Then he said it.....'Well that big bike of yours isn't made to handle curves like that'. Well that did it!! I got all defensive and told him about while doing the dragon there was a crotch rocket we were following that wouldn't get out of my way, we had to pull over to give him time to get waaay ahead of us so we could play. (Of course, the crotch rocket HAD to be a novice rider, but I didn't tell them that). And how I could smell my front brakes, I was riding my bike so hard! In my younger days, I would've challenged them to a road race Of course this ended the conversation. They casually went back to talking amongst themselves. Probably thinking I was full of 'IT'. My wife just stood there grinning at me like 'you old fool'. As I look back, It was like they were calling one of my kids ugly. I guess I have finally become attached to this machine. craigr
  22. Last week I installed a Shinko 230 Tour Master front tire, V-rated, on my 1988 Venture Royale. I ordered it from Motorcycle Superstore, at a good price -- less than $70 including shipping. I went on a 200-mile ride on lots of "invisible roads" with twisties, straight sections, and a short section of high-speed interstate. All roads were dry. Excellent response from this tire, rather quiet -- much quieter than the Continental it replaced. No problems of any kind. Still to report: How it handles on wet roads, and how long it will last. If the tire passes these two tests, then it's a helluva bargain. Nick Diaz Middletown, MD
  23. We made it back yesterday...Great trip. Got home about 3 PM. total miles 1455. We went some interstate and some back roads up to Maryville TN. Spent the night then headed over and ran the Dragons tail US129 then rolled over the Cherohala Skyway. Went back to Maryville for lunch then headed down through Pigeon Forge through the Smoky Mt park to Cherokee NC...no cell service or beer there so went on down to Maggie Valley to spend the night. Great rides that day for sure. Next morning we left Maggie Valley on 19 back to Cherokee then on 441 south to 74 then to 23 then hit 64 into Highlands. Great roads there.. 28 out of there and turned on Warwoman road after we crossed into Georgia and into 76. More great roads . Took 75/17 down into Helen GA. Took 75 alt across to 129N hit 19 then 60 north back up to Blue Ridge GA. During this we stubled apon the Vogel park WOW. Went down 5 to 53 into Rome and when north on 27 up to Summerville GA. Happend apon a beautiful War Memorial there. Took off 48 to 40 to 35 into Scottsboro Ala to spend the night. Many great roads on this day. Left the next morning on the last leg headed home on 79 to 278 across to 13S to 18 to 96 into Columbus MS. 45 South to 21 south to the house. Great 4 day trip. Ready to go back the same route today. Weather was cloudy most of the time but we only got a couple of sprinkles. Wore our jackets most of the time due to it was kinda cool. Almost put on chaps one day especially at the higher elevations. The wife did not get to go with me this time but life ain't over yet. Tires are not flat in the middle no more. Got full even wear on the sides now. Lots of twistys on this trip. I learned to toss this big big around those curves...hard right then throw her over to the left. Here is some photos.

  25. Morning everyone! We just got back from a tour of the Fredricksburg area in the heart of hill country. How would everyone feel about having the Stampede there next fall? There are a couple great places to stay that offer RV, tent, and rooms in the same place. So far, the bookings are pretty open for the weekend of October 9-11. Earlier and we hit Octoberfest. Later we start running into the Luckenbach fall festival. Right now I can find rooms in the $50-$70 range and tent spots in the $10.00 area. I can guarantee great riding and food. Also a bunch of places to shop if one was so inclined. Maggie volunteered to bring the Expedition up for use as a shuttle bus if we pick here. It is about 2 hours from San Antonio by major road and about 3 or so by back roads. About 45min to an hour from the famed Three Sisters farm roads. JB
