  1. I'll be taking delivery tomorrow on my '97 Royalstar tour classic with approx 28k miles on it, super clean. From all I've read, its a great bike, but the suspension needs firming up so the handling is not so 'wallowy' However, I've been unable to find anything regarding suspension adjustments/settings for this particular year (except one link that stated there were no adjustments available for '97s) this can't be true, can it? This is my 1st full size cruiser, and i will be doing a lot of two-up riding. I am about 195lbs with gear on, and my GF with gear is close to 160lbs so obviously soft suspension will be less than desireable for handling. I know its not a bike meant for aggressive riding or massive lean angle, but I don't want to be scraping floorboards on every turn either. Thanks for any tips!!
  2. Luckily, both Susan & I RODE away without even a scratch. The bike... well... not so much. My pride... well... you know. VERY steep hill, very sharp hairpin turn, and I was negligent enough or arrogant enough to attempt it in 3rd gear. Right at the apex of the turn, the bike lugged, shuddered, and stalled. The roadbed was very steep to our right, so the bike pitched us off like ragdolls. we were tossed clear into some very soft loose gravel, and our full riding gear paid for itself in a nanosecond. Long story longer, the bike got skinned up pretty bad. All the plastic on the right side got deep scratches. No cracks, though. Took it to the dealership this am for an insurance estimate, and they don't actually FIX anything. they just replace it. What I really want to do is take the check from the insurance, and fix it myself, if they'll go with that. Funny thing is, I was just getting ready to spring for a new F4 tall & wide windshield. Have a good reason to toss the old one now. Nice, big greasy slab of humble pie for me. I have been riding for only 19 months, logging about 17,000 miles along the way, so I think I am fortunate to get off this easy.
  3. Check out this site. Scroll down and to your left and they have a deal on precsison motorcycle riding. There are others as well. There is one with and old Harley Davidson and still runs and check out the passenger seat. Pretty cool stuff. See tomorrow. Hal http://videos2view.net/
  4. Just returned home from riding the last 3 days of the Southern Route of "Run For The Wall 2012".. A real experience to say the least.. I would recommend riding what "legs" you can next year. It will be the 25th Run and should be something very special. A buddy of mine on a GW and I on my "Limited" joined the Southern Route Group in Chattanooga and rode with them all the way into D.C... We rode home on Sat/Sun and didn't stay for the "Thunder Run".... Very well organized and satisfying.... It was mostly HD, quite a few GW and some Yammy's....Trikes, sidecars and trailers also... Each group was in their own platoon.. Rain on the first day, but beautiful the rest of the way....
  5. WOW...talk about mixed feelings. I started riding when I was about 14 and I sure earned my share of battle marks during those early years. No training at all, just jumped on a bike, figured out what to push to make it go and was a terror for many years after that. Dylan is 19 now. I've bought a few small bikes for him to put around the yard on when he was younger but he never had any real interest. He had a CT70, a CT90, a Honda Bearcat and etc. but just never rode them over a half dozen times or so. Last week he told me that he has decided that he wants a bike. I think that some of his co-workers ride and he wants to join them. I feel very hypocritical about it all. I absolutely do NOT want him to get a bike but I sure understand the attraction. It has brought me much joy over the years. So, what do you do? I told him the truth about how I feel about it. That I really don't want him buying a bike but that I knew I had no basis to tell him no. I told him that I would insist though that he take the MSF safety course and that he NOT start out on a crotch rocket. I am steering him towards a 650 or so cruiser like maybe a VStar or a Honda Shadow. Due to his lack of interest in the past, I never thought I would have to face this day but here it is.
  6. Well Guys , We got a new member , Fender Lizard and shes all mine . 7. Okay, I like to get out of dodge on memorial day weekend. I am in east central Illinois. Looking at a destination 500 to 600 miles out for a $100 hamburger, yes I am a pilot to. Was thinking about ft rucker Alabama to take in the army air museum, anybody know of anything better. Other thing to cross my mind is riding part of natchez trace. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
  8. wife was about to leave for work this morning & said " I don't care where we go or what we do, i just want to get on the bike & go " now that is a good woman... any1 near want to join us you are welcome, just don't know where we are going... wouldn't mind riding the trace to NASHVILLE...
  9. you are out riding ? Please add name, location & the food served... this can help some of us newbies who is new to riding... My favorite is Loveless Cafe In Nashville just off the Natchez Trace, food served SOUTHERN, BBQ, & their biscuits and home made jams!!!! Our 1st trip there we arrived at 3pm on a Sunday afternoon and there was a 45 minute wait, BUT it was well worth the wait!! They have spots out front for motorcycles .. wow I may see if wife wants to ride up this weekend
  10. Just a post to let anyone who might be interested know I have just two of the black braces left. This isn't a panic emergency notice as I can always put in another order for another 10, but it may take a while, and now that riding season is upon us??? Any rider who hasn't done the mod on their 1st needs to consider it....
  11. Hello Everyone: While we are slaving away doing Estate cleanup at my parents home. Two of our veryone VR member couples rode more than 50 miles one way to stop by say hello, rub it in and go to lunch with us. Thanks to Patrolman46, RogerII and their wonderful wives!!! Hope to be riding again in a few weeks??
  12. There is a chance that I could be riding to the Las Vegas Area around 19 June to 2nd of July. I would like to ride to the Grand Canyon area and into maybe a bit south, kind of want to experience the Arizona landscape. Question 1) How do you ride in the heat, yet still have adiquate protective riding gear. My riding gear consist of Tour Master Transition 2 Jacket with the matchinig Tour Master Venture Pants. Obviously I'll remove the thermal and waterproof lining and have all the jacket and pants air vents open. I also have the Clearview shield with the air vent. Will being lots of bottled water. Question 2) Leaving Las Vegas I would like to ride thru Death Valley going towards Sauramento. But leaving Las Vegas means that I would be going into Death Valley late morning. My 91 MKII gets the normal 40 mpg +or - 2 mpg depending on how I twist the throttle. Being that it looks pretty straight and flat I'm thinking that I should be getting the plus 1 or 2 mpg at about 65 mph. Where are the gas stops? Would I really need to bring an extra gallon of gas? Most of my life I've been able to handle heat better than the average, and not normally a complainier of uncomfortable environments. Except I do complain of high humidity. I just want to ride safe and would appreciate your heat riding experience advise. Also if there are any members that would like to take me on some local rides, I'd be open to that.
  13. I want to start riding at night again, and the headlight on the Lady Blue just isn't enough. So I've seen my options: Upgrade to a new headlight bulb. I was thinking PIAA's H4's, or a Silverstar Ultra. Aux Lights: Who to buy from, what kind? ya know? I need ones that provide optimum visuals, and be fully capable of supporting my headlights light cast. Upgrade to HID: Who to buy from? what type? Theres lots of different types of Aux lights, fog lights, hid brands... -.-'
  14. I just wanted to take a minute to say HI to Y'all, it's been awhile since I've even had time to check email, let alone read all the good info on here..... working 60-100 miles from the house eats up my downtime. hoping to get some carb parts to get the 'ol couch up on the road soon, before monsoon season makes riding miserable:fingers-crossed-emo.......My bobber FINALLY passed emisions, now I get to dial the carbs back in so it'll run right.... any how I'm off to do errands again.......
  15. My wife and I are 50ish, and she was always terrified of bikes. Well, 2 yrs ago I talked her into riding with me on the Vulcan 900, and although a little scared at first, she thought it was ok. Problem was the small seat for her, and feeling of being maxed out on load for me. I bought the '85 a month or so ago, and was instructed to "practice" a lot before we went 2 up. Good advise, actually. I put about 500mi and new tires on it and she decided she felt safe enough. Let me tell you, after pulling almost 400lbs of us around on a 900cc cruiser, that VR is like a jet airplane for 2 in comparison. She said she was real comfortable, loved the stereo and smoother ride. Only thing that made her paranoid was being able to see the mirrors and cars in them, lol. Power wise, I couldn't really tell she was there. I think she'll be ready for more regular riding in the future. Another happy 1st gen owner here.
  16. was riding, lost turn signals. sudden drop in voltage, limped home. now it want start. help!! i heard about some relay......is this it? where is it? whats the part number? who has one??
  17. Just rode the RSTD 540 miles this weekend. My butt is killing me. What seats are you guys comfortable riding for long distances on? I have a 2006 RSTD (new to me).
  18. I found Dans Brother today. He showed up to go for a ride with about 14 other bikes that:thumbsup2: we were riding withs
  19. On Monday, its off to work. I'm at the office early. A quick cup and coffee and begin to focus on the work week. I'm getting the week's tasks prioritized and make a quick run through the emails. Here's a message from one of my riding buddies bragging about a new 'hole in the wall' eating place. I will have to put that one on my 'short list'. On Tuesday, I’m knee deep in a busy week. Service calls are made, meetings are attended. Service reports, equipment evaluations – the business gears are in full grind. Still, if only for a short break, I think about riding. I wonder if Steve and Bob are enjoying their commuting ride each morning. By Wednesday, I’m in full swing. Things at work are flowing quickly - equipment breaks, equipment repaired. Plans are executed. Challenges come and are met – these are handled by experience and expertise. At lunch, I surf the net some for my passion. But by now, I’m checking the weekend weather. Looks nice – should be good for a ride. If I don't hear from one of my buddies, I send a quick email. “How about a ride Saturday?” I'll wait for a response. Thursday comes, and I start getting excited about the upcoming weekend. 2 more days until the fun begins. Perhaps I will hear from a riding buddy. Maybe I’ll be riding alone. Either way, I’m going. During a break, I’m scanning around Google Maps, looking for new roads – thinking about what might interest me. I don't want a lot of traffic. If I want to leave early, heading west or north to keep the morning sun out of my eyes. Hmmm – I bet the spring wild flowers will be in bloom. Or maybe the river water level will be up at that state park up north. So many choices, so little time. IT’S FRIDAY!! By this afternoon, I’m going to take care of the last service calls for the week. The company can have me today. But tomorrow is mine. Just me and the road. I close my eyes for a second. I can smell the country. I can breath clearly – hear the sounds. I can hear the roar of my bike. I can see the curves in the road. I can feel the forces on my body as I ride. I can't wait until tomorrow! Saturday is ride day. I will get up early, have a cup of coffee and leave as soon as the sun rises. Maybe I’ll ride over and meet a buddy somewhere before we head out for an adventure. Maybe I’ll be venturing out on my own. Maybe I know where I’m going. Maybe I have no idea. Perhaps I’ll turn a corner and stumble upon that perfect country road. The one that steps you back in time 60 years as you pass the old farms with wind mills and run down barns. Maybe I’ll find that twisty road on the map that looked so interesting. Maybe I’ll find a 100 foot white pine, with its massive branches that reflects life lesson about bending without breaking. Maybe I’ll visit the coast line – watch the birds foraging for lunch. Maybe I’ll stop somewhere and meet someone new. We will chat for a while about riding. Maybe I’ll find that farmers field, where the sun and shadows provide that perfect photo. Maybe I’ll ride that same old road – the one which I have memorized every curve. I can ride that road as a master, safely pushing my machine back and forth and loving her power and smoothness. Maybe I’ll go 600 miles, or maybe just 60. Maybe I’ll do all of these, or none of these. But this much I know – wherever I go, I will find adventure, and I will have a blast. And when I return, the world will seem right again. I’ll have a feeling of peace. I’ll be ready for whatever comes next. What comes next is Sunday. On Sunday, I wake up early to read the paper and drink some coffee. Later that morning, I’ll cook Sunday lunch for my wife. We share several meals together during the week. While I cook, I’ll day dream about yesterday. What a day that was. Yesterday was a play day. I got to ride my bike. We had an adventure together. We left the house excited and returned home relieved of any stress. Yesterday was a blast. I love Saturdays...
  20. Hello my wife and I are headed up to the Up on the 2nd of may and will be there through the weekend, would love to get some riding in with local folks. We will primarily ride Friday and Saturday and will be in the Boyne Falls area! Let me know thanks!
  21. Just booked this place down by Marshall Arkansas for a week the middle of April. Going down with my wife and another couple from this board (Bryan52577 and Lisa). Going riding as mush as we can and just enjoy the peice and quiet in the evenings around the camp fire. may even have a beer or 3. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.156002567793599.33147.155954591131730&type=3
  22. I live out in the country just off US Hwy 290. It's not uncommon, especially with this lovely bike riding weather we're having, to see lots of bikes on the road. Seeing one pulling a trailer is also not that uncommon. The doubletake was the one this morning who was not only pulling one of the mini camping trailers but also the canoe/kayak he had tied to the top of it!!! It had to be a one person craft. Anything bigger and he'd either being hitting the rear of the bike, or himself, in the back!! I'm in serious riding withdrawl. Between work and stuff going on at home [a visit from the Mum!], I've only gotten in a "quick" 40 mile run during the BIG MD just a couple weeks ago. Here's hoping I can get out this weekend and blow out some serious cobwebs!!
  23. Hello, I am brand new to the forum. I am 51 yo, been riding for 30 years, many bikes of different styles and brands over the years but never a cruiser. Currently riding a Suzuki V-Strom, which I actually adore. I am 6'2" tall, 225 lbs, 34 " inseam. Lately I have been considering a cruiser/touring bike. I am not interested in any Harleys, but have been looking at some Japanese bikes. My local dealer has one last brand new red 2009 RSTD, which I can buy for just over $12k on the road. He sells many brands and models, but says this bike, with all its features, at this price with the 5 year warranty cant be beat. I think I fit nicely on the bike, although I've never ridden a bike with my feet out in front of me. I am considering this RSTD over every other cruiser due to the way I fit on it and the great V4 engine. But as I read the boards here I have discovered multiple issues, including the gear whine. It seems while many love these bikes, many also have serious issues . . . some never want to get rid of them, some cant wait to dump them. And I cant believe I"m even considering a bike with carburetors in 2012. So I'm just hoping, without offending anyone, if any current owners here believe these are still bikes worth considering in 2012, or have they become outdated, and if that gear whine is a rare occurrence or much more common. I guess what I'm asking is should I consider this bike as a new bike purchase or look elsewhere? Thanks alot in advance for any advice or comments. Craig
  24. A friend sent me this link showing the riding skills of the team of instructors at the Delta Technical Centre in Kyoto Japan. Incredible. The recording is several years old. There is another video of them performing this routine in the rain!!! Even more incredible!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gs2RnbvHSuU]デルタテクニカルセンター パレード - YouTube[/ame] Andy
  25. A buddy asked if I wanted to go look at some property up north . We took the bikes and rode 541 miles . Waterford to Cheybogan . Took our time 14 hours worth. I have to say that this Road Glide Ultra is the best riding bike I have ever been on. All broke in now with 750 miles which is more miles than I put on the RSV in three years. lol Maybe I forgot that I liked it too.
